Work Text:

It was a late summer evening. A chill had crept into the air as the sun had almost set. The flames from the fire made the shadows dance over her face as Ruby’s eyes were fixed on Mia through the flames. Ruby’s gaze was set on Mia, more intense than it seemed casual. The seconds passed, and it was Ruby who finally broke the silence.

“You ever think about us?”

Ruby was nervous about the answer. Watching Mia earlier made her thoughts drift to the moments between them earlier during the summer. The questions had built over time, the biggest one was whether something was happening between them, something real, or had this just been something fleeting over the summer.

A small smile played over Mia’s lips, and she ran her fingers through her hair. Her gaze on Ruby, if the fire hadn’t been between them, she would have reached for Ruby’s hand, linking their fingers together.

“Every time you look at me,” Mia said, voice soft, almost like it was a secret between just the two of them, “the way you are looking at me now.”

It wasn’t just the fire that was burning hot. Mia felt her cheeks flush after she spoke, and it wasn’t the heat from the fire that made her face and chest flush. She had voiced something she had kept to herself, and only because Ruby had braved to ask a question that had hung in the air between them unspoken in the last couple of weeks.

“What way?” Ruby asked, her eyes locked on Mia. Her heart beat quickly against her ribs. Almost afraid of what Mia’s answer would be. She stood up, took a few steps closer to Mia.

“That way,” Mia said. She pointed to Ruby’s face. “I don’t know what else to say.” She bit down on her lip, searching for what words to use. “Like you can’t wait to get me alone in a room and have your way with me.”

It wasn’t exactly what Mia had been looking for, but it was close to it. She had wanted to add in more feelings, but the look on Ruby’s face wasn’t one of just love or feelings; there was much more to it. The physical aspect of it had been easier to address compared to the part that involved feelings that Mia couldn’t put into words.

Ruby couldn’t hold back the small laugh that escaped from her lips. She hadn’t expected Mia to be as forward with her answer.

“That’s one way of putting it.” She reached for Mia’s hand, fingers brushed against Mia’s hand, and she took the hand in her own. “I think I would have said something else.”

“Like what?” Mia asked. Her head tilted to the side, and her gaze was locked on Ruby. “I thought it was good to be direct.”

“It’s good to be direct,” Ruby agreed. She took a breath, collecting her thoughts, “but,” her tongue darted over her lips, “it’s not just that.” She lifted their hands, her lips brushed against Mia’s in a soft kiss.

“Tell me what it is.”

She was curious, and she wanted to know what it was that Ruby was talking about. She had a guess, but she wanted to hear Ruby voice what it was that her look meant.

Actions speak louder than words, rang in Ruby’s mind. She cupped Mia’s cheek with her hands, pulled Mia closer, and she closed the gap between them. Lips brushed gently against Mia’s, letting Mia have a chance to pull back if this wasn’t something she wanted. She felt a hand pressed against her leg, and another one gripped her hip.

“Does that answer your question?” Ruby looked at Mia, a smile on her lips.

“It confirms that you want to take me to bed,” Mia replied. Her voice was teasing, and she grinned as she looked at Ruby. “But also, it wasn’t just a kiss that told me that you want to sleep with me, it felt like it was more than that.”

“Good.” Ruby pulled Mia onto her lap, her arms circled her waist, and she pressed a few light kisses against Mia’s lips. “I want to take you out on a date. I want a chance to woo you.”

Mia hummed, her fingers trailed patterns over Ruby’s back, and she pushed some hair away from Ruby’s face. “You can do that.” She captured Ruby’s lips with her own. “But you can also take me to bed tonight.” She smiled against Ruby’s lips, “because I want to see what your face looks like after you’ve taken me to bed and we’ve had sex.” Mia slipped a hand under Ruby’s shirt, “and I want to see and feel your abs really up close,” her hand moved up Ruby’s body, “and these,” fingers brushed against the underside of Ruby’s breast.

A shiver ran down Ruby’s spine. She hadn’t expected Mia to be as forward as she was. She moved Mia on her lap so that she was straddling her instead. Ruby’s hands moved up Mia’s back. She leaned closer, “so what do you want me to do?” she whispered, lips almost brushing against Mia’s as their breaths mingled together. Ruby knew what she wanted to do, and she just wanted to hear Mia say what she wanted. Fingers pushed under Mia’s shirt and moved up her spine, and she pressed her lips against Mia’s neck, nipping on the skin as she waited for Mia’s response.

The details, Mia wanted to really answer Ruby’s question, but she didn’t want to tell Ruby exactly what to do. She moaned and tilted her head to the side, giving Ruby better access to her neck. “I want us to have sex,” Mia replied, “I want your fingers inside of me, I want your mouth on me.” It was harder to form words as her breathing got faster and more shallow, her heart beating fast in her chest.

Ruby bit down on Mia's shoulder. She hadn’t expected Mia to actually tell her as much as she had; it was a lot with few words. Ruby knew what Mia wanted, and she was going to give her that. She stood up, her arms secured around Mia’s waist, and she felt Mia’s legs wrap around her. “Let’s give you what you want,” Ruby whispered against Mia’s lips. “You can say stop whenever you want, and if we’re about to do something you don’t want.”

“I trust you,” Mia whispered and claimed Ruby’s lips with her own, and she felt how Ruby moved them from the firepit through the patio doors, through the house. She couldn’t believe it was about to happen, she was going to have sex with Ruby. Something she had waited for all summer, maybe longer.
