The Devil's Contract

Summary:

Daniel walked into the BDSM club expecting either a great story or a casual lay. Instead, he met a strange man with an unusual proposal. Perhaps he was thinking with his dick as he signed the contract, or maybe his journalistic curiosity got the better of him.

At first, the one-month trial period seemed like a blessing; a backdoor clause for Daniel to make a quick escape. But as the final days of the trial period crept closer, Daniel found himself dreading the very escape clause he had once considered a lifeline.

Notes:

I'm not yet sure of exactly how long this fic will be, but it's shaping up to be a big one. Feel free to skip the 3,000-word contract at the end of this chapter, as most of it isn't crucial to the fic (I'd already written it and thought some readers might enjoy it). It will somewhat foreshadow what is to come, but most of the important bits are mentioned in dialogue.

Chapter 1: Deal with the Devil

Chapter Text

Daniel Molloy was no stranger to selling himself. Whether it be his body for the night’s fix, or his attention for the week’s story. Sometimes the lines of business and pleasure blurred.

At least they did on that particular night.

He had arrived at the club just after midnight. When he’d found out that his recent subject was a regular at an underground BDSM club, he grew hopeful. The interviews had been dull thus far, but this offered a new hope.

Some would call his method exploitive or unethical. Daniel simply told himself he would either gain a story or a good time; he didn’t know which he preferred.

He had never shied away from the BDSM scene, though his past experiences were drug-fueled and hazy. Give him the option to be hogtied and jacked off for a line of coke, and he’d take it anytime.

The club was quiet, as he’d assumed it would be on a Wednesday. He’d hoped to dwindle out the bachelorette parties and drunkenly curious college students. The air was warm and heavy with cigarette smoke, perfume, and the low murmur of conversation.

He moved through the room with a drink in hand, observing rather than participating. He noticed the nervous ones first, then the people pretending they weren't. The ones who had clearly been here before and the ones who were waiting for someone else to make the first move.

Then he noticed the man standing near the edge of the room. He looked completely unaffected by the scene around him, not sparing a glance at the woman wearing only ropes, nor the man in leather briefs.

Everyone else was performing, whether for themselves or others. Some feigning confidence, others relishing in the sideways glances they received. Not him. He simply stood there, dressed in what Daniel assumed to be a bespoke suit, with an unamused expression.

“You’re staring.” The man's voice was quieter than he expected. He didn’t meet Daniel’s gaze.

Daniel blinked, “Occupational hazard.” He shrugged as the man brought a cigarette to his mouth, casting a dim light on his lips.

The man hummed, though his expression remained stoic. “You are a journalist.”

Daniel chuckled into the rim of his glass, “That obvious, huh?” He looked across the floor, watching as pairs made out, and noticed the other onlookers doing the same.

“No,” The man’s voice lightened at the word. Daniel imagined the small, amused pull of his lip. “You study every person that walks by. You’re not here for pleasure.” Daniel swallowed thickly, his ears burning slightly.

He cleared his throat once, the sound barely audible over the music. “Can I not be here for both?” He offered, daring to look at the man once more. “Maybe I’m scouting potential lays.” He added with a cocky smile after a moment of silence.

He may have a good time after all.

“Potential lays…” The man practically scoffed, taking another drag of smoke. He still didn’t look at Daniel; he wondered what it would take.

Daniel decided to double his efforts. “Is that not what you’re doing? Looming back here, stalking potential prey…” His words drew long, bordering on mockery. It seemed to have the desired effect, as the man let out an offended sound.

“Certainly not.” He practically spat, shaking his head.

“Hey man,” Daniel held his hands up in mock surrender,  “I’m standing next to you. I’m not judging.” He took another sip to muffle his own amused chuckles.

The other man was not equally amused. He finally turned to Daniel, his eyes sharp and seemingly glowing as they narrowed on him. “Why would I stalk potential prey when you have proven they will simply come to me?” Daniel sucked a sudden breath.

It took a moment for the words to register. Though as they did, a sudden surge of arousal ran through Daniel. “Hey, are you calling me prey?” He tried his best to sound as offended as he thought he should be. The truth was, it was the hottest thing anyone had ever said to him.

He watched as the man blinked, a curious expression on his face. “Are you offended by the implication?” Daniel felt the judgment seep into the words. “Or are you denying it?” The man tilted his head, his brow slightly furrowed.

“Uh…” Daniel scratched the scruff of his neck, breaking the prolonged eye contact to glance at his shoes. “Neither, I suppose.” His voice grew weaker.

“Fascinating.” And if Daniel wasn’t already hard, that one word solidified it.

“Careful.” Daniel chuckled, feeling his cheeks warm. “Keep looking at me like that, and I might get the wrong idea.” He lifted the glass to his lips, only to find it empty.

A slight frown pulled at the man’s lips. Daniel momentarily felt bad for causing it. “What gives you the impression it’s the wrong idea?”

“I don’t know…” Daniel looked to the bar and found a relatively short line. “Maybe that we are still standing here, talking in metaphors. It’s not exactly my kinda foreplay…” A part of Daniel wanted the man to stop looking at him, melting under his intense stare. The other part of him, however, soaked in the attention.

The man finally chuckled at that, the sound more satisfying than it should be. “I’d hate to disappoint.” He brought a hand to Daniel’s neck, the touch barely there as he guided his attention back to him. “Tell me…” A pause.

He caught on. “Daniel.”

“Daniel.” His name rolled from the man’s tongue as Daniel leaned into his hand.  “Are you nervous?” He had such a way of making Daniel squirm.

“No.” Daniel denied immediately, despite his reddened ears, “Just curious.” He felt his heart pound against his ribs.

“In a journalistic sense?” The man questioned, his thumb now rubbing circles.

Daniel blinked twice, unsure how he’d given that impression. As though he wasn’t being reduced to a horny mess. “Fuck no, man.” An awkward, breathy laugh escaped him. “Just curious about you… and yeah, shit, maybe a little nervous.”

A soft smile spread on the man’s face as he withdrew his hand. Daniel caught himself chasing it, mourning the loss of contact. “Walk with me.” He must have sensed Daniel’s thoughts, as he placed a firm hand on the small of his back.

He allowed himself to be guided through the club; the music faded slightly as they passed curtained alcoves and smaller rooms. Conversations were quieter, and the atmosphere more intimate back here.

The man nodded to staff and regulars who passed, the motion slight and formal. Daniel made a note: he was known here, but didn’t show it off. They stop in front of a small booth, hidden around a dark corner in the back of the club. Somewhere, Daniel assumed, the man knew they wouldn’t be interrupted.

The man extinguished his cigarette and turned to Daniel. He could see his face clearly now; more youthful than expected, younger than himself if he were to guess. He took the empty glass from Daniel’s hand, setting it on the table before gesturing for him to take a seat.

Daniel did as he was told, sliding into the corner of the leather booth, watching the man shut them in with a heavy, floor-length velvet curtain. The music reached them only as a distant pulse now, more vibration than melody.

The man sat opposite Daniel, once again setting his intense gaze on him. Daniel cleared his throat in an attempt to ground himself. The effort was in vain. “You still haven’t told me your name.” He pointed out, crossing his arms against his chest.

The man regarded him for a moment before answering. “Armand.”

“Armand.” Daniel tested the name on his tongue. “You know, for someone sitting in a BDSM club, you don’t seem all that interested in the spectacle.”

A faint smile touched Armand’s mouth. “I’m not interested in the spectacle, no.” He confirmed, a slight amusement to his words.

Daniel tilted his head, sensing an underlying meaning to his words that he couldn’t yet grasp. “So what are you looking for tonight?” The question was genuine; to satisfy both Daniel’s curiosity and desire.

“Someone worth speaking to.” Daniel took the answer as both a compliment and a challenge. He leaned back in an attempt to look more composed than he felt. Still, his knee bounced restlessly beneath the table.

“So this is an interview now?” Daniel pressed. This was unlike any hookup he’d had before. He’d usually be out the door by now, satisfied and back roaming the streets. He’d be lucky to have spoken at all by the end of it, let alone had a conversation in a private booth.

Christ, he didn’t even know that this was leading to sex.

“If it were an interview, you would be asking the questions.” Armand folded his hands on the table. “But I am curious about something. You said you were nervous.”

Daniel laughed, perhaps only to relieve some tension. “Yeah,” He admitted, “A little.”

Armand nodded once, “Good. Nerves mean you understand that this is not casual.” Daniel wasn’t sure what to make of that, but fuck, was he curious.

Daniel let out another short laugh. “That’s funny, because I came here hoping for something pretty casual.”

Armand’s expression did not change, but his gaze sharpened. “And had you found that, would you have known what you were agreeing to?”

Daniel opened his mouth, then closed it again. He didn’t know what the man’s angle was. Why would he care who Daniel slept with?

“I’m not trying to lecture you,” Armand assured, his voice quieter now. “I am trying to understand whether you simply wish to be desired or if you want to surrender control.” The question settled heavily between them.

Daniel rubbed at the back of his neck. “Honestly? I don’t think I’ve ever thought about it.”

Armand hummed, though he looked pleased, “That is what I suspected.” For the first time, Daniel felt a flicker of embarrassment that had nothing to do with attraction.

“I suspect that you are, in fact, going to lecture me.” Daniel huffed, wishing he had another drink in front of him. It took a moment to realise that he could simply get himself another drink. Still, he did not move.

Armand considered him. “Mutuality. Consent. Boundaries. Responsibility.” He paused. “A dynamic should be negotiated, not improvised in the heat of a moment.”

Daniel chuckled, though stopped himself as Armand remained stoic. “You make it sound like a business arrangement.” This guy was dead serious.

“In some ways, it is,” Armand hummed in agreement.

“So, you’ve done this before?” Daniel tamed his expression, the flush returning to his cheeks.

Armand studied him from across the table. “Yes.” He nodded once.

“And you have rules?” He pressed, all too aware of the way the man was looking at him. He moved to readjust himself, cursing his decision to wear slim bootcut jeans.

Armand’s grin grew as he watched, “I have preferences,” Armand corrected. “And I expect honesty about yours.”

“If we were to go through with this.” Daniel questioned, continuing as Armand nodded, “I don’t know if I have a neat list.” He looked down at his hands, his thumb picking at the skin of another finger.

“That is not a failing. It simply means you have not had reason to make one.” Armand assured, as Daniel glanced up at him. A server passed by the curtain, and Armand waved him away with a small gesture. When they were alone again, he continued. “If you came home with me tonight expecting sex, I would disappoint you.”

Daniel blinked. “That direct, huh?”

“I prefer directness,” Armand pressed, shrugging his jacket off. Good to know he was getting hot as well, Daniel had started to believe he did not affect the man.

“Then why invite me home?” Armand rolled the sleeves of his shirt to his elbows, distracting Daniel for several moments too long.

He didn’t care to tear his eyes from the exposed skin as Armand answered his question. “Because I think this conversation would be better had somewhere quieter.” His expression softened slightly. “And because I would like to explain what I am looking for before either of us makes assumptions.”

Daniel hesitated. Every instinct told him not to get involved. He’s used to seduction and mind games; this was different. Armand wasn’t playing with him. “What are you looking for?”

“A submissive who understands that their submission is given, not taken. Someone willing to discuss limits, expectations, and trust before anything physical occurs.” He paused. “Someone who can say no.”

Daniel let out a slow breath. “That is not what I expected to hear tonight.”

“No,” Armand smiled softly, holding Daniel’s gaze. It was less intense now, just heavy—grounding. “But it may be what you needed to hear.” For a moment, neither of them spoke. The distant music throbbed beyond the curtain. “Though I do hope we are compatible. I find you rather fascinating.”

Finally, Daniel smiled, crooked and uncertain. “You know, I was hoping for a lay. But now I’m curious.”

“Curiosity is a better foundation than impulse.” Armand sighed, though his expression never dulled. In fact, Daniel swore his lips parted at his words.

He was not drunk enough for this. Still, Daniel stood before he could talk himself out of it, reaching for his jacket. “All right, Armand. Show me this quieter place.”

Armand rose as well, his expression once again unreadable except for the faintest hint of approval. “Very well,” he nodded. “But understand this before we leave: tonight will be a conversation. Nothing more.”

Daniel met his gaze. “I understand.” He surprised himself with his own confidence, although feigned. The truth was that he wasn’t sure what was happening. He knew he shouldn’t go home with the kinky gay guy from the club—the story of his life. Still, he found himself leaving, Armand’s hand on the small of his back.

Armand’s apartment wasn’t far from Daniel’s, perhaps a ten-minute walk through the heart of San Francisco. Despite the proximity, Armand’s apartment was on another plane of wealth. He couldn’t even call it an apartment.

Armand chuckled as he walked past him into the foyer, clearly reading his thoughts. “Shoes off, please, Daniel.” Daniel toed his shoes off without acknowledgement, kicking them neatly to the corner. Armand tutted but said nothing, bringing Daniel back to reality.

He was led into a spacious kitchen/dining room, where Armand seated him at the ten-seat table. “Would you like a glass of water?” He asked, his back turned as he entered the kitchen. From his seat, Daniel could still see him, opening a cabinet and taking two glasses before Daniel had replied.

“Yes, please.” His throat had grown incredibly dry. Whilst Armand was distracted, Daniel took the time to take a few shaky breaths, and get his bouncing leg under control. By the time Armand re-entered with two glasses of water, Daniel had somewhat composed himself.

“Have you ever engaged in a dom, sub dynamic before, Daniel?” Armand took a seat opposite him and placed the glasses down. Daniel coughed, his mouth momentarily agape, so much for his composure.

“I, uh…” He took a small sip of water to settle himself. Armand watched him curiously over the rim. “I mean, I’ve been tied down and slapped enough times.” He shrugged, a small pit opening in his stomach as Armand sighed.

“Beyond one-night stands?” He pressed, his voice tinged with concern. Daniel’s ears burned.

“Oh…” He paused, looking to his hands, “No, not really.”

Armand nodded, his gaze softening, “Well, before your one-night stands, did you ever discuss boundaries or limits with your partner?” Daniel stared blankly, “What you do and don’t like?” Armand clarified.

Daniel took another sip of water. Armand hadn’t touched his own. “Not really,” He sorted through his memories, through the haze of various drugs, only one night stood out. “Well, one time a guy told me he would hog tie me and jerk me off for a line of coke… So I suppose we discussed that.” He grew less and less confident as he spoke.

“Did you let him?” Armand eventually asked. Daniel couldn’t tell if it would be better to tell the truth or to lie.

“What? Hog tie and jerk me off?” He pressed his lips together, unable to meet Armand’s eye. “I mean—yeah.”

Armand hummed before continuing, “Did you enjoy it? Or did you only agree for the drugs?”

Daniel was quiet for a beat. “Well, I initially agreed for the drugs.” He admitted as the pit grew bigger in his stomach. “But yeah, I ended up enjoying it.”

“That’s a… concerning yet somewhat positive start.” Armand looked as perplexed as Daniel felt.

After several moments of silence, Daniel found himself compelled to fill it. “What exactly are you looking to get out of this?” It was the first question to come to mind, though Daniel’s curiosity was genuine.

“Honesty.” Armand replied without hesitation, then added, “Someone who can think for himself, disagree with me, and maintain a life outside of our dynamic.” Daniel nodded along. “Someone who enjoys a power imbalance, who is willing to submit, understanding that I am not forcing them to, but of their own free will.”

Daniel’s head tilted slightly, the movement involuntary and unnoticed, “You want me to be powerless?”

“No,” Armand assured, his mouth curved faintly. “Powerlessness is imposed, submission is given. The distinction matters.” He emphasised, talking with his hands. “I’m not looking for someone to disappear into the role,”

Daniel chuckled under his breath. “Well, that’s good, because I don’t disappear easily.”

“I noticed.” Armand’s expression was bordering on affectionate.

Daniel snorted, “That was almost a compliment.”

“It was a compliment.” Daniel held the man's gaze, settling further into his chair. For the first time since entering the apartment, he relaxed a little.

“So if someone agreed to this dynamic, what would that actually look like?” He asked, his finger tapping silently against the table.

“It would begin with discussion,” Armand began, “Limits. Interests. Health considerations. Privacy. Expectations for communication. Expectations for time spent together. Expectations for behaviour within and outside the dynamic.”

Jesus Christ, Daniel thought. This guy was one hell of a control freak. He’d usually be running for the hills by now. However, something in him told him to stay. “You’ve thought this through.”

“Yes.” Armand nodded, the confirmation was proud.

“And you’d write it down?” Daniel pressed, his brow furrowed. He was slowly grasping the concept, though he still didn’t know how he felt about it. It didn’t help that every time he glanced up at the man, his pants grew tighter.

“If both parties wished to proceed, yes. Documenting exactly what is agreed upon is an exercise in trust and consent.” The man explained, though Daniel only heard half of it, his gaze fixed on his exposed chest as his top button fell undone.

Daniel shook his head, half amused and half fascinated. “You really are serious about this.”

“I would not ask someone to place trust in me without being serious.” Daniel studied Armand for a long moment. He carried an ease with him, a calmness rooted in control. He wondered if he’d let Daniel interview him.

“So what are your preferences?” He asked, hoping to throw the other man.

Armand’s gaze flicked to him with a mix of curiosity and amusement. Not what Daniel was aiming for, but he’d take it nonetheless. “In what sense?”

Daniel shrugged, “In the practical sense. You know, the reason we’re having this conversation.”

Armand inclined his head. “I enjoy consistency and control in all situations. Rewarding what pleases me, punishing what does not.” Daniel’s breath hitched at that. “I relish in the trust my partner has in me, and pride myself on delivering on their expectations.”

Daniel swallowed dryly, reaching for his glass of water again. “I, uh…” He took a long sip. “Don’t know how good I’d be at that.” His words often escaped him without thought, getting him in trouble more often than not.

Armand offered him a small smile, which surprisingly calmed Daniel’s nerves. “I expect obedience.” He reframed. “I don’t expect you to pretend to be someone you’re not.”

Daniel nodded, letting the words sink in, “You make it sound like a long-term arrangement.”

Armand shrugged a single shoulder, “It could be. Or it could be a short-term arrangement that is approached with care. Duration is less important than clarity.”

Daniel considered that for a moment. “And what would be expected of the… of me?”

“To communicate honestly,” Armand began, leaning forward. “To discuss limits openly. To arrive sober enough to consent. To respect agreed-upon boundaries. To understand that trust must be built gradually.” Daniel remained silent for a moment too long, tossing a single word around his mind. Sober. Of course, Armand noticed. “Is that a concern?”

Daniel chewed on his lip, pulling it tight before speaking. “I don’t have many, uh… sober experiences.” He dropped his gaze to the table. “I don’t remember a lot of them.”

Armand remained silent for a few seconds. “Thank you for telling me.” His voice was softer and quieter than before. Daniel found himself leaning into the change. “That would make sobriety an important condition for any future negotiation.”

“That’s it?” Daniel looked surprised by the lack of judgment in his voice, having expected a lecture from the other man on safety, or perhaps Daniel’s plain stupidity.

“I would want you to be fully capable of making decisions.” Another silence settled between them, quieter this time.

“So what happens tonight?” Daniel eventually asked.

Armand thought for a moment before responding. “We continue talking if you wish, until every question you have is answered.” A pause, his voice softer as he continued. “You may leave whenever you want.”

They spoke for another hour. Daniel had plenty of questions, and despite Armand’s judgement-free answers, he struggled to ask every one. By the early hours of the morning, Daniel was overwhelmed with information.

By the time he stood to leave, the sun threatened to peek over the horizon. Armand guided him towards the door, a hand firmly on the small of Daniel’s back once again. Daniel couldn’t stop himself from leaning into it.

As he opened the door, Armand reached into his pocket, producing a small card with a number on the back. “Here is my phone number.”

Daniel took the card. “So, I call you if I want to continue?”

A flash of disappointment crossed over Armand’s expression, so quick that Daniel had nearly missed it. “Call me either way.” Armand’s gaze grew intense again. “Do not call impulsively. Take your time to consider the proposal.”

Daniel nodded, his tongue suddenly heavy. “What should I do before calling?”

Armand’s eyes softened at the question, “Think about your boundaries.” He began, his thumb subconsciously drawing circles on Daniel’s back. “Think about what you want to explore—whether you want a casual or prolonged encounter. When you call, I want you to have considered these questions.”

Daniel tucked the card into his jacket pocket. “You know, when I walked into that club, I thought I was either going to get a story or a good time.”

Armand’s smile grew as he dropped his gaze, “And now?”

Daniel smiled crookedly. “Now I think I got homework.”

A faint laugh escaped Armand. “Perhaps.” They stood there for a moment, Daniel’s legs protesting leaving. “Goodnight, Daniel,” Armand spoke first.

“Goodnight, Armand.” Daniel nodded, exiting the apartment.

The walk home was plagued by his own thoughts, as were the days that followed. Despite the early hour, Daniel couldn’t sleep. Thoughts of their conversations haunted him: wondering if he’d said the wrong thing or given the wrong impression. The whole night was strange—the outcome even more so.

Eventually, partially to silence his thoughts, and partially out of self-indulgence, he rolled onto his back and palmed his relentless dick. He shoved the blankets from himself, picturing that intense gaze as he spat on his hand.

He felt the hand on his back as he stroked himself. Heard the man’s voice, instructing him to move faster—to buck into his hand. Heard his name whispered into his ear, the command to come now or to go back to bed, hard and weeping.

His heels dug into the mattress as he came. The voice didn’t go away, praising him, telling him how proud he was—telling him to rest now. Turns out, the masturbation session did nothing to relieve him as he tossed in bed for six restless hours.

The next day, he found himself distracted in the office, staring at the same paragraph for thirty minutes. Every time he began to read, his mind drifted to him—to his proposal. His eyes continued as his thoughts dragged behind.

By lunch, he had achieved nothing but a semi and a headache.

Friday came, and Daniel found himself staying in. He sat at his desk, with a single paper and a pen laid out in front of him—the heading at the top read “Daniel’s Dos & Don’ts” in his janky cursive.

He sat there for two hours, pen in hand, and yet he went to bed with not a single addition to the list. He could hear Armand telling him to take his time, to come to terms with what this would mean for Daniel.

Sometimes, he couldn’t believe he was even considering this. Others, he nearly picked up the phone. He knew he wanted this; hell, he would have walked out the moment he didn’t. It was just… complicated.

By Saturday night, he had a semi-cohesive list (the best he could manage). He had invited a few co-workers over that night to watch the Knicks play the Lakers in the NBA Finals. He, of course, was the only Knicks fan in the group.

So, naturally, following their 102 to 93 win, he had to celebrate. It was two in the morning, and fourteen drinks deep, when everyone had dispersed from his apartment. He was getting ready for bed with no delusions of being let into clubs tonight, when he spotted a familiar card on the kitchen counter.

It took three attempts to dial the correct number. He picked up on the second ring. “Hello?” His voice sounded deeper than usual, groggy from sleep.

“Hello to you, Mr control freak.” Daniel might have been yelling.

“Daniel?” Armand suddenly sounded more aware and twice as concerned.

“The one and only.” He laughed with a hiccup, “In the flesh—or well, not really.” He pointed at the phone before realising Armand couldn’t see him.

“Are you drunk?” It sounded more like an accusation than a question. Daniel did not appreciate it. He didn’t pick up on the disappointment laced into every word.

“No…” He pouted, denying immediately. “Maybe a little.” He admitted with a grin. “The Knicks won!”

Armand groaned, no doubt pulling the phone from his ear. “What?”

Daniel rolled his eyes with a sigh, “Of course, you don’t watch sports.”

“Go to bed, Daniel.” Armand finally snapped. Daniel hesitated for only a moment.

“No. I’m calling to tell you my decision.” He pressed, wrapping his free arm around his own chest.

“No. Consider our sobriety clause in action.” Armand’s voice was scarily calm. “Go to bed, Daniel. Call me in the morning.” The line rang out. He had hung up on him. Daniel sighed, placing the phone back on its holder before dragging his ass to bed.

At least sleep came easily that night.

He woke up with the usual headache, his stomach turning, and needing to piss. His alarm clock radio beside his bed read 10:35 a.m. His apartment was a mess of cans and pizza boxes, his kitchen littered with half-drunk beers.

He began emptying them into the sink when something caught his eye. Armand’s card. He groaned as the memories came back to him, already gravitating towards the phone to apologise. Four days of stress and worry for him to blow it in one night.

Armand picked up on the first ring. “Armand speaking.”

“Hey, uh…” He pinched the bridge of his nose, squeezing his eyes shut. “It’s Daniel.”

“Good morning, Daniel.” His tone was dull, though Daniel had no ground to be disappointed. “I hope you rested well.”

“Yeah, something like that.” He sighed, realising that Armand wasn’t going to press. “I need to apologise for calling you last night. I was drunk and wasn’t thinking straight.”

“I see.” Armand hummed on the other line. “Thank you for apologising.” Silence. He wasn’t making this easy for him, and Daniel didn’t blame him.

“I uh, was meaning to call today anyway…” He began, pulling at the collar of his shirt. “I’ve made my decision.” The words were harder to form than expected, especially after the two days of practice.

“Which is?” Armand pressed. Daniel could imagine the anticipation he was feeling, or at least, the anticipation he hoped he was feeling.

“I’d uh… Like to continue.” A pause. Daniel swallowed. “If that is still on the table.”

Daniel knew Armand was making him squirm on purpose, delaying his answer for several seconds. “Of course it is,” He couldn’t hide the pleasure in his voice. Daniel smiled. “I’m rather glad you’ve come to this decision.”

“Yeah, it was a… process,” Daniel admitted, his headache easing slightly.

“I trust that you have prepared a list of boundaries and interests?” Armand’s voice remained light as he spoke, clearly pleased.

“Yeah, I’ve got it,” Daniel confirmed as though it hadn’t been the bane of his existence for four days.

“Good.” Daniel was too hungover to pay attention to his growing dick. “Are you free to come over to my apartment tonight? Say eight o’clock?”

“Yeah, sounds good with me.” Daniel nodded as he spoke, his stomach suddenly hollow again.

“I will see you then,” Armand confirmed, his smile audible.

“Yeah, see you later.” Daniel was the one to hang up this time. He set the receiver back into its cradle and stood still in the middle of his kitchen.

The apartment smelled faintly of stale beer and dish soap. Sunlight cut through the blinds in pale stripes, catching on the abandoned pizza boxes and the stack of newspapers near the door. Daniel rubbed a hand over his face, trying to decide whether the hollow feeling in his stomach came from the hangover or from the fact that he had just agreed to return to Armand’s apartment.

Probably both.

He picked up the card again. The number was written in a careful hand, dark ink against cream paper. It looked absurdly formal for something that had kept him awake for days. “You’re doing this,” he muttered to himself. The words sounded ridiculous out loud.

He spent the afternoon cleaning with more determination than the task required. Cans went into recycling. Dishes were washed. Daniel’s Dos & Don’ts sat in the centre of his desk, untouched by the apartment’s filth. He added a few more lines beneath the heading, his handwriting uneven where the pen hesitated.

Daniel’s Do’s & Don’ts

Boundaries:

  • My job is my own
  • My friends are my own
  • My private life stays private
  • I can leave if I need to

Interests:

  • Sex.

He stared at the list for a long time. At seven-thirty, he changed his shirt twice, then cursed himself for caring. By the time he left the apartment, the air outside had cooled enough to stop the flush spreading across his cheeks.

Armand opened the door before Daniel had fully decided whether to knock again. “Good evening, Daniel,” as though they had arranged a perfectly ordinary dinner.

Daniel had considered bringing something (it was only polite). Wine was off the table, and flowers were too romantic. He eventually concluded that if Armand wanted him to bring something, he’d have told him. Daniel lifted the folded paper in one hand. “I brought notes.”

Armand’s mouth curved fondly. “So did I.” The apartment was as immaculate as Daniel remembered. He took off his shoes without being asked this time, placing them carefully beside the door. Armand noticed.

“Improvement already,” Armand observed. Daniel shivered.

“Don’t get used to it,” Daniel warned, though the corner of his mouth twitched.

Armand led him to the dining room. The long table was set with two glasses of water and a neat stack of papers. Daniel paused when he saw them. “You really prepared for this, huh?”

“I told you I was serious,” Armand pulled out a chair. “Sit. We have a lot to discuss.”

Daniel did as he was told, placing his own notes beside the papers. For a moment, they both remained silent, though strangely, Daniel didn’t grow uncomfortable. Armand folded his hands. “I would like to begin with what must remain outside any agreement.”

Daniel blinked. “Outside?”

“Yes. Your work, your friendships, your private correspondence, and your decisions about your life beyond our interactions.” Armand’s gaze remained steady. “I have no interest in replacing your independence.”

The tension in Daniel’s shoulders eased before he could stop it. “That was actually the first thing on my list,” he admitted.

Armand inclined his head. “Then we are already in agreement.” Daniel unfolded his page and slid it across the table. Armand read it carefully, his expression softening. “These are reasonable concerns,” Armand said after a moment. “Privacy, autonomy, and the ability to withdraw from the arrangement are essential.”

Daniel let out a breath. “I know this is probably obvious to you, but I needed to write it down.”

“It should be written down,” Armand assured, placing the paper beside his own pile. “Sex is also a fair interest.” Daniel rubbed his cheeks, trying to hide their redness.

“Yeah, well—” Daniel followed his gaze, swallowing the growing lump in his throat. “So what’s in that stack?”

“A draft framework,” Armand shrugged slightly, the movement barely there. Daniel caught it.  “A starting point for discussion, to be refined to our particular tastes and interests.”

Daniel raised an eyebrow. “A draft contract?” He chuckled to himself, “Stepped out of Story of O.”

Armand’s eyes widened at this, comically large and curious. Daniel felt a surge of pride for inciting such a reaction. “Fascinating.” He drew, “You’ve read Story of O?”

If Daniel knew that all it took to excite the man was the mention of erotic novels, he’d have said it sooner. “No, not really.” He admitted, cursing himself as Armand’s expression shifted. “I just uh, know of it, I suppose.”

The man nodded with a tut. “I came with topics that should be discussed,” Armand continued, reverting the subject. “You may reject any clause you dislike.”

Daniel leaned back, considering him. “All right.” He nodded, more to himself than the other man.

Armand turned the first page toward him. “Confidentiality. Any personal information, conversations, or details of the arrangement remain private unless both parties agree otherwise.”

Daniel nodded immediately. “Yes. That one stays.”

Armand’s gaze flicked to him, though his expression was unreadable. “Good,” He nodded, writing a note in the margin. “Now autonomy. The arrangement does not grant authority over your employment, friendships, family relationships, finances, residence, or personal decisions outside the agreed dynamic.”

Daniel looked up. “That one is important to me.” It had been his main concern: how this would affect his life. A life of slavery was not in his cards; he had a Pulitzer to win, after all.

“Then we will keep it,” He scribbled another note before turning the page. They moved through the pages slowly. Some clauses were accepted quickly; others became points of discussion. When Armand suggested a regular meeting schedule, Daniel frowned.

“I can commit to making time,” Daniel’s brow pinched, “but my work is unpredictable. I can’t promise to be here every weekend.”

“Then the clause should allow for flexibility,” Daniel let a small sigh of relief escape him. “The purpose is consistency, not obligation.”

Another clause addressed communication before and after their meetings. “I don’t want to be required to report my whereabouts,” Daniel pressed, reading the short paragraph under his breath.

“You won't be,” Armand assured, pointing to a subsection. “The clause concerns communication relevant to the arrangement itself, not surveillance.”

The conversation continued for over an hour. They discussed boundaries, health considerations, methods for pausing or ending an interaction, and the importance of regularly reviewing the agreement. Daniel found himself arguing over wording with surprising intensity.

“You’re not offended that I’m changing things?” Daniel had asked several times.

Armand looked up, his brow furrowed. He almost looked offended. “If I wanted unquestioning agreement, this would not be a negotiation.”

Daniel snorted softly. “That was almost reassuring.”

“It was intended to be reassuring.” The man’s gaze fixed on him once more, placing the papers to the side. “I am impressed by your resolve, Daniel. I enjoy your sense of self-advocation; in fact, I encourage it.”

They paused for coffee. Armand prepared it in silence while Daniel wandered to the window overlooking the city. The lights of San Francisco spread below like scattered gold. “You know,” Daniel said, still looking out the window, “part of me expected this to feel more dangerous.”

Armand handed him a cup. “And does it?”

Daniel considered the question. “Yeah, but not in the way I expected.” He turned back toward him. “It feels more… I don’t know. Intimate?”

Armand softened as he joined him at the window, staring down at the city. “It is an intimate relationship.” He assured, as Daniel took a sip of his steaming coffee, “I hope the fear subsides as you begin to trust me.”

Daniel licked his lips with a hiss, trying to cool his tongue. “I may be better at improvising than planning.”

Armand quietly laughed, though he didn’t deny it. “That is why planning may be useful for you.”

They returned to the table and reviewed the remaining pages. Daniel added a clause about protecting his identity from public exposure. Armand added a clause about mutual responsibility for maintaining trust and communicating concerns promptly.

“This one matters to me,” Armand said, indicating the clause. “If either of us feels uncertain, uncomfortable, or unable to continue, we discuss it directly. Silence can become its own form of dishonesty.”

Daniel found that most of Armand’s concerns centred on communication and honesty. It wasn’t surprising, nor did he imagine his need for privacy and independence was. Daniel traced the edge of the paper with his thumb. “That’s fair.” He wondered when they would touch on the interesting part, before remembering he had a voice. “Are we going to talk about the… uh.”

“Activities? Interests? Hard and soft limits?” Armand filled in with an amused smile. “I was going to make you wait. Though I suppose seeing as we are on the topic…” He regarded Daniel with a curious look as his stomach turned. “Would it be easier to hear mine first?”

Daniel nodded immediately. “Yeah,”

“Alright, then.” Armand turned a page, reading from a small list. “We will start with limits. Hard limits are things we will completely exclude from our relationship. Mine are acts involving fire, animals, defecation and urination, and surgical tools.”

Daniel nodded along, also not seeing the appeal of any. “I uh, agree with those. But I want to add torture, like mutilation, to the list too.” It was something that had plagued him for a few days, though the longer he spoke with Armand, the less he seemed to worry.

Armand made a note. “Is that all?” He glanced at Daniel, who inclined his head. “We can always revisit this if you change your mind. Now, soft limits are things we will thoroughly discuss before trying. Mine are acts involving food and other people.”

“Alright…” Daniel hummed, looking to his hands, “I think I’ll add any sort of photographs of me.” As a journalist, he knew that no photo was truly private. It was shocking what could resurface ten years later.

“Great.” Armand turned another page, setting his pen down. “Now, things we would be open to trying or exploring together. I personally enjoy the idea of a power imbalance. With that comes humiliation, degradation and praise, impact punishment, and certain shows of possession.” The man spoke so casually as Daniel sank into his seat. He must have sensed Daniel’s apprehension. “I understand that you are somewhat inexperienced. Would you like me to list things for you to agree or disagree with?”

Daniel would never admit to the relief that washed over him. “Yes, please.” He tried not to sound too desperate. “That would be easier, I think.”

“Alright,” Armand began. “Anal and oral penetration?”

Daniel chuckled under his breath, his grin growing. “I’d hope so.”

He noticed the faint tug of Armand’s lips at his remark. “The use of anal toys?”

“Yeah, fine.” He leaned back, crossing his arms across his chest.

“The use of rope or other restraints?” Daniel nodded. The other man shook his head, shooting Daniel a pointed look. “Use your words, Daniel.”

He bit the inside of his lip, his heart suddenly pounding against his ribs. He burned with humiliation already.  “Yes, all fine.” He watched as Armand’s gaze sharpened and heard his breath hitch. At least Daniel wasn’t the only one.

“Blind folds and gags?” Armand continued, readjusting in his seat.

“Sure.” Daniel yawned. He wasn’t tired; he just wanted to see if Armand would react. He was rewarded with the subtle pinch of the man’s brow.

“Whips, floggers, and paddles?”

Daniel considered it for less than a second. “Yes.”

Armand grinned now, though this time it remained. “Biting and marking?”

This made Daniel pause. He didn’t particularly enjoy wearing scarves in mid-May. “Nothing that I can’t hide at work.” He decided after a moment, “Oh, and nothing that will scar.”

Armand met his eye for a moment, his grin still present, but his expression otherwise unreadable. “Fair concerns.” He agreed with a slight nod. “Verbal and psychological humiliation?”

“Yes.” Armand chuckled at his enthusiasm, causing a dull throb in his dick. Definitely on the table, then.

“Sexual overstimulation and orgasm control?”

“Like edging?” Daniel sighed; he was going to regret this one. “Yeah, fine with me.”

Armand seemed pleased. “Breath control?”

Daniel took a small sip of water before answering. “Choking? Uh, maybe?” He’d never been choked, so his apprehension wasn’t rooted in fear of bad experience per se. Though the idea still concerned him for some reason. Despite this, his hard-on never wavered. “I’d have to talk about it first.” He concluded, listening to his dick.

Armand made a note before continuing. “The use of chastity devices? Namely, genital cages.”

“Oh…” Daniel paused. Once again, he’d never worn a chastity cage—or even seen one for that matter—he didn’t loathe the possibility, but he wasn’t particularly comfortable with it either.   “Again, I think I’d have to talk about that.”

This continued for another twenty minutes. Armand listing absurd sexual fantasies, and Daniel thinking with his dick. More than once, he had to stand to rearrange himself. Armand never commented, though Daniel caught him shifting uncomfortably more than once, too.

They established a safeword, telenovela, naturally chosen by Daniel. By the time they finished, the draft was covered in notes, arrows, and revised wording. Daniel relaxed into the notion that Armand had taken his few concerns seriously.

The other man gathered the pages into a neat stack. “This is still a draft,” He cleared his throat. “I will revise it according to our discussion and give you a copy. You may take it home, read it privately, and decide whether any further changes are necessary.”

Daniel nodded slowly. “You’re not asking me to sign tonight.”

“No,” Armand tutted, “I’m asking you to revise the changes, and consider whether you would like to proceed with the outlined arrangement.”

Daniel looked at him across the table, something uneasy settling in his chest. This sex had better be world-class. Armand placed the revised draft in a folder and slid it across the table. “This is for you.”

Daniel took the folder carefully. The paper felt heavier than it should have. “More homework,” He sighed, “You better be a good lay.”

Armand’s smile was faint but genuine. “A more substantial assignment than last time.” A pause. “It will be worth it.”

Daniel stood, tucking the folder under his arm. “You think highly of yourself.” He gathered his jacket with a chuckle. “I’m going to read it properly before I agree to anything.”

“I expect you to.” Armand walked Daniel to the door, “Take as much time as you need.”

At the threshold, Daniel hesitated. “For what it’s worth, this was not what I expected tonight.”

“No,” Armand agreed. “But was it useful?” Daniel considered the folder in his hands, the notes they had argued over, and the strange relief he felt at having been taken seriously.

“Yeah,” he said at last. “It was.”

Armand opened the door. “Goodnight, Daniel.”

“Goodnight, Armand.” Daniel stepped into the hallway with the folder tucked securely against his side. The city air felt cooler now, sharper against his face. As he descended the stairs, he took what felt like his first breath of the night.

He was doing this.

Daniel called Armand within 24 hours. He had expected to be haunted by his own thoughts again, but instead found a kind of calm he was unaccustomed to. He'd reread their ten-page draft several times that Monday, finding no additional concerns. Armand didn’t seem shocked to hear from him so soon.

They made arrangements for Daniel to come over on Friday night at 7 p.m. to finalise their contract and begin their one-month trial period. Now, all he could do was wait.
