Chapter Text

01.

Atsumu was exhausted. The Jackals had just played a grueling 5 set match against the Tachibana Red Falcons. Aran really got stronger since he last saw him, huh? The faux-blond hair stuck up in different directions, still moist after a shower. His towel had pulled his hair up and into some sort of star-shaped pattern.

Currently, Atsumu was in the locker room getting dressed after a nice cold shower. The rest of the Jackals were almost as tired; the Falcons were a tough opponent after all. Though, it didn’t go unnoticed how Kiyoomi glared at his husband. Bokuto’s cheerful voice cut through the tired silence in the locker room. “Omi-Omi, you good?” Kiyoomi simply grabbed a comb and began bickering with his blond lover.

“God, you look like a moron! What is up with your hair?!”

“Ey! Yer so mean to me Omi!”

The setter complained, but never made an effort to move away. The sound of plastic bristles passing through tangles echoed through the room. “Ow! Careful, Omi!” Kiyoomi rolled his eyes, but his movements slowed. The rest of the Jackals found it odd, but everyone passed it off as post-game exhaustion. ‘They’re not in their right minds’, they thought.

02.

The media room at the back of the arena was freezing, bright, and absolutely packed with journalists. Atsumu and Kiyoomi were sitting in plastic chairs with metal legs after being selected for a post-match conference. The setter was grinning and basking in the camera flashes, while the spiker sat with a straight back and hands on his lap.

“Miya-san, Sakusa-san! Congratulations on your win today, you both played amazingly! Your connection on the court was nothing short of telepathic. Miya-san, how do you always manage to know your spiker’s hitting preferences even when the game gets chaotic?”

The two made eye contact for less than a second, before Atsumu began to speak. “I’ve been memorizing Omi’s tells since highschool, it’s basically muscle memory. ‘Sides, he gives me the silent treatment at dinner if I don’t give ‘em a perfect set!” His Hyogo accent had toned down over the years, but it still remained. You could hear it slip every now and then if you were really listening.

“I do not give you the silent treatment. I only ignore you because your meaning of conversation is chewing with your mouth open and trying to discuss statistics while choking on rice,” Kiyoomi fired back. The two began to bicker, completely oblivious to the way the sounds of soft murmuring and pens gliding against paper had stopped.

“They eat dinner together?” Bokuto asked in the quietest voice he could manage. Shoyou was quick to reply. “Well yeah, they’re roommates, aren’t they?” “I’d assume they’d eat at different times to avoid fighting. We always have to pull them apart while they argue, so I thought they’d avoid each other entirely at home,” Meian joined the conversation. “Maybe they share food to cut up on costs?” “Wan-san, you’re a genius!” Hinata praised Inunaki with his usual bubbly and animated expression.

03.

The court was enveloped in a comfortable silence; everyone was catching their breath or drinking water during the time out. The MSBY Black Jackals were having a scrimmage to prepare for a game against the EJP Raijins. Everything was going well until Hinata’s eye caught something. “Tsumu-san, no! That’s Omi’s water.. bottle.” The ginger tried to stop him, but he was already too late.

Everyone tensed up, waiting for the black-haired spiker to explode, yell at Atsumu, leave the room, anything, but the yelling never came. Kiyoomi simply grabbed the water bottle out of his lover’s hands and wiped the tip with a wet wipe.

The sound of plastic flicking against skin echoed softly against the court walls, followed by a quiet ‘ow, Omi!’ from the blond setter. “Put this on. Your lips are chapped and bleeding, and you got it on the nozzle of my bottle.” Everyone visibly relaxed, but was still a little tense with confusion. “Ah, thank you Omi! You remembered I like cherry chapstick!”

Kiyoomi simply rolled his eyes. “Whatever. Just remember yours is the one with the red top.” Everyone in the room was definitely thinking the same thing. What the fuck? Since when were they so close? Maybe Kiyoomi’s misophobia has died down a little lately.

04.

The locker room was quiet, save for the quiet conversation between Hinata and Bokuto. The only other noise was the rustling of bags and the sound of lockers opening and closing. Suddenly, Atsumu walked to another side of the room, specifically in front of Kiyoomi’s locker. He opened it without permission, grabbing an energy bar.

“Touch my protein bars, and I’m changing the deadbolt.”

“Ya wouldn’t dare! Who would cook the rice?”

“I can cook rice you fuck!”

“Yeah, but you like my umeboshi with the little nori faces!”

The two bickered back and forth, paying no mind to the stares of their teammates. “Sharing an apartment with someone you hate must be hard, huh?” Bokuto asked, running a hand through his hair. “Come on, I’m sure they don’t hate each other, Bokkun. Just.. strongly dislike each other.”

Bokuto and Inunaki couldn’t be any more wrong.

05.

The summer heat made Osaka feel like a sauna. Coach Foster had just dismissed the team from a three hour practice completely focused on defense. The team was currently huddled up in front of the vending machines, neatly stacked energy drinks and sodas perfectly placed row by row.

“Damn it.” Kiyoomi’s voice rang out as he dug his hands into his empty track jacket. “Miya, card? I left my wallet in my gear bag.”

Everyone’s jaw dropped. Much to their surprise, a matte-black card was neatly flicked through the air. It landed directly between the spiker’s index and middle finger before he tapped it on the machine. “Thanks Tsu.” A small strawberry milk box fell in the small compartment below as Kiyoomi pocketed the card.

“Gosh, ya hafta stop ordering those gross sweets! I’m so tired of our fridge being full of your homemade chocolates! If more sweets show up on the statement, I’ll actually change the PIN.”

Kiyoomi rolled his eyes. “It’s a shared card for a reason, Miya.”

Again, the bickering started. Bokuto let out a loud, shocked laugh. “Wow. How in debt is Tsum-Tsum to Omi for them to have a shared card just for their apartment?” “A lot, probably. I don’t blame him though. If I had Atsumu as a roommate, I’d probably demand the same thing,” Meian replied. The team giggled.

+01.

It was a usual Tuesday afternoon. Practice had ended 20 minutes ago, and the locker rooms were filled with the usual chatter. Hinata was relacing his shoes, Bokuto was humming an anime theme song and Inunaki was checking his phone on the bench.

Suddenly, the temperature in the room plummeted. Kiyoomi Sakusa-Miya had been rummaging through his bag for minutes by now, his expression growing more and more panicked. Hinata tried to help. “Omi-kun, is something wrong?”

Ignored.

Bokuto tried. “Omi-Omi, did you lose something? Your favorite grip tape? Your pack of masks? I didn’t touch them, I swear!”

Kiyoomi didn't answer. He began tearing his gym bag apart with a frantic, terrifying speed that none of them had ever seen before. He dumped his knee sleeves, his extra shirts, his perfectly organized sanitizing wipes, and his water bottle onto the floor. His hands were shaking slightly. His breathing was shallow.

Meian stood up, alarmed. Kiyoomi had always been composed. This was the first time he’d ever unravelled in front of them. “Kiyoomi, we can help you find whatever you’re looking for. What exactly did you lose?”

"The chain," Sakusa muttered, his eyes wide and unfocused as he swatted at a piece of loose tape on the floor. "The silver chain. It has... it has a ring on it."

Bokuto blinked, utterly confused. "A ring? Like... a fashion ring? A jewelry thing? You can just buy a new one, man! Don't cry!"

"I am not crying, you idiot, and I can't just buy a new one!" Kiyoomi snapped, his voice cracking with anxiety as he practically shoved his entire torso into the bottom shelf of his locker.

Atsumu strutted out of the showers, a towel wrapped around his waist. “Omi, chill. You left it on the kitchen counter this morning and I forgot to tell you. Check the side pocket in my bag.” Kiyoomi visibly relaxed. He opened said pocket, slipping a silver chain over his head. Attached to it was a gorgeous rose gold ring with the initials ‘SK + MA♡’ etched into the interior.

“Omi-kun, you’re married?!” Hinata squawked, his voice cracking so hard it echoed off the metal lockers. The entire room stared with bated breath. Bokuto looked like he’d just been told gravity was optional. Inunaki’s phone slipped out of his hand, landing on the bench with a soft clatter.

Kiyoomi paused, his hand still holding the ring. He blinked, turning a flat, genuinely bewildered look toward Hinata. He didn't look defensive; he looked like Hinata had just asked him if water was wet.

"What do you mean, 'Omi-kun, you’re married?'" Kiyoomi asked, his tone dropping into a rare state of absolute confusion. "Why are you saying it like it's a revelation?"

"Because it IS a revelation!" Bokuto shrieked, clutching his hair as he had a full-blown existential crisis on the bench. "With who?! Who is brave enough to marry our Omi-Omi?! Why didn't you tell us?!"

Atsumu, who was still casually standing by his locker with a towel wrapped around his waist, stopped drying his hair. He looked around the room, his eyes darting from Bokuto’s frantic face to Meian’s stunned expression. The smug grin completely vanished from the setter's face, replaced by a look of pure, unadulterated shock. "Wait..." Atsumu stammered, looking genuinely flabbergasted. "Ya guys... ya guys didn't know?"

"KNOW WHAT?!" Hinata yelled, his eyes widening to the size of dinner plates. The setter pointed a trembling finger at his own rose gold ring, then at Kiyoomi’s. "No. No way. You two?!"

"Well, yeah!" Atsumu barked, his voice climbing an octave in sheer disbelief as he looked around at the horrified faces of his teammates. "We’ve been married for four years! We had a tiny ceremony right before Omi started college! Komori was there! Osamu brought the food! We thought ya’ll just... chose not to bring it up to be polite!"

"WHY WOULD WE CHOOSE NOT TO BRING UP A WHOLE MARRIAGE?!" Adriah yelled, his brain completely short-circuiting as years of bizarre, confusing team memories replayed in his head at lightning speed.

The cherry chapstick.

The shared card.

The deadbolt threats.

"You bicker constantly! You argue about dish soap! You split your finances like angry business partners!" Kiyoomi looked genuinely offended now. He smoothly tucked the rose gold ring beneath the collar of his shirt, letting it rest against his collarbone.

"That is not 'resentful business partners,' Adriah-san. That is a household budget. We file our taxes jointly. He is the primary policyholder on my premium dental plan. I literally talk about our property taxes in the hallway."

"YOU COUCHED IT IN PURE AGGRESSION!" Bokuto screamed, pointing a violently shaking finger at them. "HOW WERE WE SUPPOSED TO KNOW 'IM GONNA CHANGE THE DEADBOLT AND LOCK YOU OUT OF THE HOUSE' MEANT 'I LOVE YOU, HUSBAND'?"

Atsumu looked completely blindsided, turning a stunned gaze to his husband. "Omi... did they really think we were just toxic roommates who hated each other?"

"Apparently, our teammates are painfully unobservant," Kiyoomi deadpanned, though his own eyes were still wide with the shock of the discovery. He shook his head in disbelief and amusement, packing away his knee pads. "I wear my ring every single day before and after practice. I text him to pick up milk when I’m out sick. He explicitly said my homemade chocolates take up too much space in our fridge."

"We thought you meant the communal team lounge fridge!" Hinata wailed, covering his face. "We thought you were just complaining about him stealing shelf space!"

"Why would I complain about my own husband's food?" Atsumu countered, looking at his teammate like the ginger had completely lost his mind. Atsumu stared at the team for a few more seconds, completely stunned by the sheer magnitude of the misunderstanding, before the absurdity of it finally hit him. He burst out laughing. It was a loud, boisterous sound that filled the locker room.

He sauntered over, completely ignoring Kiyoomi’s usual personal space rules, and casually dropped his chin onto the spiker’s shoulder. The entire locker room watched, the realization finally sinking in that Kiyoomi didn't shrink away from the touch, didn't flinch. Instead, the spiker merely offered a small, exhausted sigh, leaning his head back just enough to accommodate Atsumu’s weight. "Unbelievable," Atsumu chuckled, his Hyogo accent thick and fond as he tightened his arm around Sakusa's waist.

"Three years of livin' together, and they thought we were just aggressively splittin' rent."

"Idiots," Kiyoomi muttered softly, though a tiny, almost imperceptible smile finally tugged at the corner of his lips as he looked down at his husband.

"Yeah," Atsumu hummed, pressing a quick, casual kiss to the side of Kiyoomi’s damp cheek before stepping back to finally get dressed. "But they're our idiot teammates, Omi. Now help me pack my bag, my arms are dead from settin’ to ya all day."

"Do it yourself," Kiyoomi snapped back automatically, though his hands were already reaching for Atsumu's discarded track jacket.

Image description: A pale, slightly veiny hand with two elegant moles on the index finger next to another. The second hand had tanner skin, barely visible callouses on the finger pads— a setters hand. They were so visibly distinct, but they shared one thing: a beautiful rose gold ring with the initials SK and MA engraved into it.

We’ve been married for four years. We thought everyone knew, but apparently not.
