Work Text:
Yukio thought that he was doing fairly well in terms of loosing his humanity. He grew used to the changes in his senses and physical looks, only slightly saddened by the fact he would still need his glasses but honestly he thought that it was all done and over with, that there wouldn't be anymore changes.
And yet fate made sure he was wrong, small little things seemed to catch him off guard. From sticking his tongue out for no apparent reason to the urge to wrestle and nip at his brother and friends when they poked fun, and of course what he had just done not even a minute ago.
Huddled right in the small corner of the stairwell with his back pressed firmly to the wall and his legs drawn up to his chest, held tightly by his arms, as if he where to crumble otherwise. His vision was blurry despite the fact he had his glasses on, hardly registering the tears that welled up in his eyes the longer he rocked back and forth.
Soft foot steps slowly approached him, but they where drowned out in his panic. “Yukio?” a figure crouched on all fours slowly made way into his sight “are you alright?” worry was plastered over his brothers face, Yukio wished he could ignore the way his breath shuddered and how a sob broke from him. “I-i..” hardly able to get a word out before devolving to whimpers and whines, his ears which had slowly grown longer where pinned downward to his head.
Slowly crawling his way towards Yukio, Rin reached out and pulled him into his chest, rumbling in an attempt to calm him down. Which did work as some less than human part of his brain finally calmed down a little more, letting the younger Okumura breath as his whimpers fizzled out. A gentle hand carded through his hair making Yukio go limp in his brothers grasp.
“Better now?” soft voice asked, Yukio nodded against his shoulder, a slight hitch in his breath remained but he was calmer now. He froze slight from the fact that at some point he had started rumbling as well, he wasn't used to this, it was so new all these new instincts along side everything else. He had crawled up the stairs on all fours like a dog! Something no normal person would have done!
“It’s scary, isn't it?” Rin spoke, making yukio jump, before nodding “ It’ll take getting used to, but I’ll help you alright?” looking at his brother as he smiled down at him with nothing but patience and affection.
Yukio just clung closer to him, not wanting to think about the urges lying underneath his skin. Making him want to curl in blankets, to play fight with other and to crawl up the stairs and on the ground on all fours.
Being brought out of his mind by Rin picking him making a small chirp leave him as he was carried down the hallway and into the familiar common room that Rin had filled with blankets and other soft things. Being set gently down in the centre of the nest he watched as his brother padded out the room on his hands and feet. Deep down he knew Rin was taking special care to walk that way, to show Yukio that he can walk like that too. But the larger part of himself didn’t care.
It wasn't long till Rin came back, their bed sheets on his back and Yukios weighted blanket in his mouth, shaking the blankets off him before draping the weighted blanket over Yukio – who, when he tried to help Rin with the blankets, was promptly growled and nipped at – wrapping him up like a burrito before settling beside him.
Arms wrapped around him and his head pressed right under his brothers chin the scent of fire wood and oranges grounding him. The purring coming from his brother settling whatever inhuman need he had before, allowing him to join in it. A much softer and more timid noise, but it made Rin hold onto him just a little tighter.
Both basked in the afternoon sun, both with their tongues peaking out in a content and happy way. Purring being the only noise in the room aside from their breathing.
It would be a rather long road before Yukio ever stopped getting scared at his own instincts, and longer for him to finally start playing and nipping at his brother and friends. But, for now they both laid curled around each other, Rins tail coiled softly around the younger, which Yukios own tail wagged softly in the cocoon around him.
