It was nearing summer break and Nakamura hadn’t had a clue as to what he should do during it. Usually he would just sit in bed and read manga, but this time was different. He had a friend to spend the break with. Hirose! Nakamura had finally made progress with Hirose! Now that they were officially considered friends, maybe they could both meet up over break and…
“Hey Nakamura!”
“AHH- H-Hirose? Yes?”
It was the end of the day and most people had already left class. No surprise since it was such a nice day out. Only Nakamura and Hirose had remained, both huddled around the older boy’s desk.
“Well…this might be a little sudden, but-”
Wha- I-Is he gonna..ask me out?!? I know we're friends, but already?!? What if he asks me to go to a cafe- or the summer festival! Ah- Hirose in a yukata…!! GAHHHH-
“So..yeah! If you don’t mind, please come!”
“E-eH? S-sORRY! C-can you repeat that?”
“You wanna go to the beach over summer break? To help with the drama club?”
W-WHATTT?? THE BEACH? WITH HIROSE? What did I possibly do to deserve this…? I”M NOT COMPLAINING!!! I might get to see Hirose in h-his…SWIM SUIT-!
Wait. Drama club?
“Drama club? Are they gonna film something there?” Nakamura asked
“Yep! It’s some movie or something… Oomori said they needed actors and wanted me to ask around”
“Ah.. that makes sense.”
“You up for it?”
“y-yES! YES! I-I’ll go…”
Hirose chuckled a bit at Nakamura’s enthusiasm.
“Oh, right! I don’t have your LINE. Can I have it?”
Ah
AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
HIROSE-! WANTS MY LINE! ARGHHHHHHARHGH-
“Y-yeah sure. Here-” Nakamura clumsily opened up his bag and took out his phone to show it to Hirose.
“Thanks! I’ll send you the details later!”
“O-okay. Thank you, Hirose.”
Hirose smiled and walked back to his seat to collect his belongings.
Oh god! Nakamura was so lucky! He gets to go to the beach with Hirose?! That’s way better than any cafe or festival. They’re practically going on vacation together! Sure, there would be other people tagging along (he could never be THAT lucky), but that didn’t matter! This meant more time to stare at Hirose.. And he wouldn’t be in his school uniform! Now that he thought about it, Nakamura hasn’t ever seen Hirose outside of this school uniform. What did he like to wear? Knee length shorts..camo shirt..his iconic sneakers…
Nakamura sat at his desk daydreaming about Hirose in different outfits. He was lost in thought for a few minutes before someone called out to him.
“Nakamura! Wanna come with?”
“E-eh..? O-Okay! I’m coming!”
Hirose stood waiting at the door while Nakamura scrambled to pack his stuff up.
“A-Alright..I’m ready” Nakamura said while walking up to the other.
“Sweet! Let’s go!”
Hirose had been asking Nakamura to walk home with him more often recently. He had no idea why, but Nakamura definitely wasn’t complaining. Ever since the class trip to Yokohama, he felt that they had been talking more frequently. He was glad he went off into the aquarium. If he hadn’t, he would’ve never gotten to go on a date with Hirose! Or even ask him to be friends. Thank you Takeuchi for running off with the girls...
“Ooo-! Can we stop here real quick? I need to pick up something for my sister.”
“O-of course!”
Nakamura was standing next to Hirose in the candy aisle of a convenience store.
“Ehhhh…What type of candy does your sister like? My sister told me to pick up some candy for her, but she didn’t say what kind..”
“Uhm.. if i’m being honest, I’m not sure… She doesn’t really talk to me that much. Only if she needs something” Nakamura said with an irritated face.
“Pfft- I’m starting to think my sister’s not that bad now! Then how about you? What’s your favorite candy?”
“Ohh..! hmmm… I think I’d say konpeito. I grew up eating those a lot..”
“OHH! I haven’t had those in a while! Hmm.. konpeito..konpeito..there!”
Hirose looked at the star shaped sugar candies in awe and grabbed a couple of packs.
“I forgot how pretty they looked!”
The way Hirose looked so happy looking at the candy made Nakamura’s heart race. The way his big eyes sparkled. His soft, but big smile taking over his face.. Ahhh-! He was so lucky..!
After Hirose paid for the candy, they continued on their afterschool walk. It was noticeably darker out now. How long were they in there for? Well- It didn’t matter! More time with Hirose! It was humid out, but the wind was blowing. It was nice. Maybe summer wasn’t going to be that bad this year.
As Nakamura was deep in thought (thinking about this summer), Hirose pulled out a pack of the candy and handed it out to him.
“Here! I bought one for you!”
“E-eh?!”
“Well, you said they were your favorite.. I also feel like I should repay you for the keychain!”
That’s right. Nakamura had gotten Hirose a crab keychain at the aquarium when they went to Yokohama. The keychain was still on his bag, glistening between them in the setting sun.
“You didn't have to… but thank you, Hirose-kun.” he said while taking the pack.
He bought this… for me? Hirose-
“I’m looking forward to spending more time with you this break! Hmmm… we should go somewhere when we get back from the beach! If you want. I think you’re really fun to be around.”
“S-seriously..?!”
“Yeah!”
“I-I would love that..!”
“Hehe..Yay!”
There it is again… that smile. He could never get tired of it. Although this time, something was different about it. The way the light hit his face. The slight rosiness in his cheeks. This smile…felt more tender..and caring.
Nakamura realized he was staring for too long as Hirose’s expression changed to confusion.
“What is it?”
“N-nothing!”
Hirose laughed as Nakamura’s face went completely red. Feeling embarrassed, he tried his best to change the topic.
“S-so how’s that new game..? You bought it right?”
“Oh, yeah! So basically…”
They talked on and on until they eventually both split ways.
Nakamura couldn’t wait for summer break.
