Chapter Text
I tapped the bar as I looked around. Men littered the room. Some were with their dates. Some were alone. One person caught my eye. He was alone in a booth, nursing a beer. He was wearing a bright red dress shirt and a grey suit. His finger tapped the bottle in time with the song playing over the speakers. I glanced a the top shelf and motioned for the bartender.
“give me a beer and a whiskey. Top shelf.” I called. The bartender glanced over his shoulder.
“What brand?” He called back.
“miller for the beer. Blantons for the whiskey.” I pointed at the bottle. Bartender nodded as I pulled out my credit card. He charged me for my tab before getting the drinks. “Can you give the whiskey to the guy in the booth over there?” I pointed to where the guy I’d seen earlier still sat.
“sure.” Bartender said. “Want me to tell him it’s from you?”
“depends. Who is he?” I asked, leaning on the bar. The bartender chuckled.
“Some hot shot lawyer.” He shrugged. “Comes on here a lot. Always alone. Doesn’t bother no one.” I nodded.
“yeah. Tell him it’s from me.” I said with a smile. I turned around and watched as the man followed the bartenders finger towards me. His blue eyes shone as he watched me, raising the glass in greeting. I made my way past the bartender and slid into the booth across from him. “Hi.”
“hi.” The lawyer smiled at me. “What does a man like me owe the pleasure of your company?” I could tell he was leery of me as I tilted the beer bottle towards him.
“figured you could use a friend.” I shrugged before taking a sip. The man nodded as he swirled the contents of his glass.
“And how’d you know my brand?” He asked.
“Mmm…” I took another drink before smiling at him. “There’s certain things you can tell about a man.” I paused as I watched his eyes dart around the bar. “Does it bother you?” His eyes snapped back to me. “Me sitting here.” I started to move out of the booth when his hand shot out.
“sorry. No. You’re fine. More than fine actually.” The man smiled at me. “Saul Goodman.”
“I knew you were familiar!” I exclaimed. His eyes dimmed slightly. “Better call Saul. Man those commercials are cheesy.” I smiled at him. “(Y/N). (Y/L/N). Sorry. I just…they’ve made me laugh long as I can remember them playing. I love em.” Saul’s smile returned.
“Thanks.” He shrugged. “Gotta cut corners somehow…” he trailed off. I nodded.
“bet they’re effective though.” I pointed out. Saul nodded.
“yeah.” He cleared his throat before taking a sip of his whiskey before thinking better of it and downing it. “Think you can hold your liquor?” He asked suddenly. I shrugged with a smirk.
“only one way to find out isn’t there?” I challenged. Saul’s smile widened.
“be right back.” He assured me as he headed for the bartender. It wasn’t long before he came back with two double shots of whiskey. “Alright. Double for you. Double for me. And a beer chaser since we already got those.” I chuckled at his excitement.
“ok. So how is this going to work then?” I asked. “Down em fresher or same time or what?” Saul shrugged.
“however. I’m easy.” He said. I chuckled and shook my head, my drink halfway to my lips.
"Better watch what you say Mr. Goodman." I said, looking at him through my eyelashes. "That sounds like a second date kind of information." Saul turned pink before he chuckled lowly.
"This a date?" He asked before downing his shot. His beer bottle was to his lips before he'd even set the glass down.
"If you want it to be." I said, following his lead. "Don't know about you but I'm enjoying this." I drained my beer as I watched him flounder for a second.
"Well it isn't everyday someone as good looking as you sits at my table." Saul finally forced out. I chuckled.
"Smooth counselor." I teased. Saul rolled his eyes. "I hope you're much better in court."
"Pray you never find out." Saul shot back. "But yeah my conviction rate isn't too shabby."
"I'd love to see you in court sometime." I said, leaning forward across the table. "Not defending me of course." Saul smiled and followed my lead.
"Want to get out of here?" He asked. "I know a place we can go. Little quieter. Less...chaotic." His eyes darted to where a bar fight was breaking out. I followed his gaze and noticed that half the bar was getting involved.
"Sure. Unless you wanna stick around and scope out any potential clients?" I offered, eyes shining with mischief. Saul smiled easily.
"You're my kind of person." He laughed. "They couldn't afford me. Come on." We stood up, Saul's hand coming to rest on the small of my back as we weaved through the fight. The cool air of the night welcomed us as we stepped outside. "Shit..." Saul murmured as he looked over at his car. "Uh...I don't know about you but I'm not looking forward to a DUI." I followed his gaze and nodded.
"Cab?" I asked, glancing around for a payphone. Saul was already digging in his pocket for his cell phone.
"Got one on speed dial." He said. I looked over at him as he called. Saul caught me staring and shrugged, a small embarrassed smile on his face. "You set em up, I'll knock em back. One by one. White man's burden." He chuckled, fidgeting in place. I laughed.
"The Shining." I smiled. Saul's smile became more genuine. He opened his mouth to respond when his call was picked up. He quickly ordered us a cab, watching as I walked over to look at his car. I smiled as I ran my hand over the hood. Saul walked over when he hung up. "A caddy? Nice."
"Yeah." Saul said, preening.
"She's gorgeous." I murmured, ducking to look at the interior. It was clean as a whistle. Saul was smiling softly at me.
"Drives like a dream too." He said. "But there ain't a cop motor in there. This is straight off the line."
"Shit. That makes her a little sad then." I teased, looking up at Saul. "I'd love a ride sometime." I leaned against the car as Saul chuckled lowly.
"Anytime you want." He shot back, leaning against the other side. We smiled stupidly at each other when there was a car horn behind us. "That would be our ride." He said, offering me his hand. I took it and let him lead me around his car. He even held my door open for me as I slid into the cab. "9800 Montgomery Blvd. please." Saul turned to me with a smile.
"And where exactly are you taking me Saul?" I asked, realizing what I was getting myself into.
"My office." He said, smiling. "If that's alright."
