Summary:

Merman Douma hunts locals and soon finds something new.

Modern AU and while humans know of merpeople, they are still idiots like those that swim with sharks, orcas and seals around.

Chapter Text

There are tales of creatures that can lure sailors to their death. That of course was in the dark ages and this is the time of technology. Surveillance is quite advance, surely someone would have spotted one of these legends.

The walls vibrate as the bass and speakers works to push the music remix out. The DJ working over time as the club continues to lose themselves to the tunes and drinks. There were also vaping and other drugs being done.

All of it was a daze for those enjoying themselves.

That however wasn’t the case for one.

Eyes study the scene, one the second floor where he can take in everyone on the main dance floor as he sips on a cup of water. It was dreadfully hot in the club and certainly won’t cool down till there were less bodies.

So he was going to help in that regard as Douma finally finds two adorable women stumbling into each other and giggling. His eyes follow them and soon finds that they were allow.

Perfect.

Outside on this most perfect night, the wind was picking up as they walk the boardwalk. The few people on there drunk or high as a kite.

The two women were both clinging to his arms as they stumble and laugh. He smiles for part as they rub his arms and torso. To say he was ready for what was next was an understatement.

“Wow , how do you get yourself so lean?” The dyed hair blond was commenting on his muscles, tracing the grooves of his arm and he grins, a sharp canine showing as they get close to the railing overlooking the sea. The sea spray hitting them and making the other girl let go and throw up over the railing.

“Oh you know….just a lot of…swimming.”

Before either one of them knew it, Douma has grabbed both of them by the waist and jumped into the dark waters below.

A few minutes later and Douma is licking his claws clean. The waves crash above him as his eyes glow, seeing through the murky salt water at the mess he has made. The smaller fish are already nibbling the exposed flesh that still leaked out blood. Faces forever frozen in terror and mid drowning.

Douma grabs an arm before it can drift too far off and stuffs the forearm into his mouth.

Soon he is going back into the depths that he calls home and waits for the urge to hunt again to invade his mind.

Four years ago, when Douma was a young merman, having finally went away from his home, he discovered the world of humans. Humans that had dull claws and often times darker skin than him. Some spoke strange languages while he picked up the one that the locals spoke.
Japanese is what it is called.

This was the one of the first things he learned about humans.

Another first was that they were delicious.

He personally hadn’t killed his first human. He did hear the boats up ahead on the waves go back and forth, searching for something.

There he was watching them before he goes back to look at the drowned girl in her swimsuit that barely hid anything. She had gotten caught in a riptide and drowned after being rocked by the current and under for too long.

There had been no scent of blood so sharks hadn’t found her before him. So him being curious like sharks, he took a nibble.

To say his eyes widen was an understatement. They became blown with awe as he took another bite.

He ate the young woman till the first shark came. He was still inexperienced and didn’t want to chance getting bitten by the fish.

His first human kill happened at sunset and he had waved a girl down.

This was of course before she saw more of his obvious features of being something not human. There were friendly merpeople but like all big creatures of the sea, one shouldn’t get so close.

Anyway, by the time her friends went looking, having been pulled away from their grill and bonfire, she was gone and so was the sun.

He learns about an adaptation of mimicry, his tail splitting into two legs and his fins folding into his skin. His claws he shorten as they were retractable and his fangs he tries to hide but he smiles a lot with his teeth. Mirroring humans and how it’s a friendly gesture and not one of aggression.

So began his habit of going to the surface. Usually stealing clothes off of male victims and drying them out the morning after before putting them on the following evening. If he doesn’t go hunting for a while, he keeps his clothes in a human plastic bag and fishermen’s cage.

One evening began like any other, Douma was going to go out in the town, bring a woman or two near the pier or boardwalk, maybe flirt a bit before dragging them into the murky depths he calls home.

However, his plans went under as he realizes a party was happening on his shores. A stage had been set up and something about a local fundraiser for those some old historical building that had been around for like 200 hundred years.

He got dressed anyway, perhaps thinking he can get a girl to go further than usual to then get killed by his hands.
The concert begins and he doesn’t think much till one singer gets on stage. His eyes begin to glow, so bright and colorful, luckily not noticed by the blinding lights that were flashing.

Though no one was more blinding than her.

A local young woman he learns. Known for being at a place called a cafe. Often performing there instead of hanging around his usual hunting spots.

Her name was Kotoha and her voice was wonderful. Like the whales and their melodies, it sang to him, rocking and vibing through his entire being.

For the first time, he was in awe. That same feeling from before came to him when he listens to her sing.

He wanted more.

—-
Two days later and Kotoha could still feel the aching in her bones. She had hosted a few segments of the show. With the heat of the day as they were setting up and her singing as a fill in singer, she was still quite tired.

She goes to her shift at the coffee shop, intending on a short show if the patrons were up for it and getting some tea as well before that.

As she gets the store ready with her co-worker, she hears the bell go off and raises her head to say hello.

To say who walk in was handsome was an understatement. The man was a light haired blond, with the most gorgeous eyes and eyelashes that stare right at her as he flashes a smile. His light colored linen top could barely hid his figure which was summer ready.

“Good morning to you as well…Kotoha right? I saw you sing the other day and I thought you did wonderful. “ The man came to the counter and gestures to the shop. “Heard the drinks and snacks are pretty good as well.”

Kotoha gives a smile and takes his order. The man handing in cash as he finishes his order and sits by the window.

If only she knew how he stared at her with a glint in his eyes, excitement in his heart for a new hunt.
