Chapter 1: New Beginnings, New Friends

Chapter Text

“Oh, no. No, no, no. I’m late! On my first day!” Xie Lian cried. He ran with his heavy luggage toward classroom 106 of his new academy.

But two classrooms away, he slipped on his suitcase and hit the floor. “Ouch!” he exclaimed. Like always, the Heavens are teasing me again. Xie Lian bore the pain and kept running, only to find the classroom door already closed. He checked his phone: five minutes late.

Now, what am I supposed to do? I lost my Orientation class where the professor was going to assign roommates. I already know my room: 15. I hope my roommate isn’t a demon with a human body. He thought while he walked through the campus until he saw a table near the cafeteria, so he sat there to rest.

Orientation was my first subject.

He read on his phone, letting out a sigh.

So my next class is Social Psychology.

“That sounds boring,” a voice said beside him. And when he turned his head, he sees a man with blue eyes and black hair, dressed in white and aquamarine. “I’m Shi Qingxuan. Who are you?”

“I’m Xie Lian,” he answered, baffled.

I guess I was thinking aloud and he heard me.

“You’re new here, aren’t you?” Shi Qingxuan asked “I’ve never seen you on this campus before.”

“Indeed, this is my first day, ” he says, tired. “Is this your first day too?”

“Yes!” he said, practically bouncing, clasping his hands to his face like a delighted child.

Well, I guess the first day of classes is a reason to be happy for some people. “So, if this is your first day here, how do you know that I’ve never been here?” Xie Lian asked.

“Oh, my eldest brother Shi Wudu studies here,” he replies, staring at his reflection in a tiny mirror. “So, they admitted me really easily—not to mention that my parents have a good status. They donate huge amounts of money every year.”

He’s really, really lucky. I wish I could enter this academy that easily. I had to study for so long just to have a minimum chance to study here.

“What a heavenly blessing,” Xie Lian said, trying to not sound a little bit envious.

“I know! By the way, I was late too. In case you were wondering why I am here,” he said, fixing his hair. “If I were you, I would be happy to be here and not in class.”

“Why?”

“Mei Nianqing teaches Orientation and Cognitive Psychology” Shi Qingxuan leaned toward Xie Lian’s ear “I have heard he’s very strict, a lot of students hate him,” he murmured. “Either way, those are just rumors,” he concluded, leaning back.

Xie Lian glanced at the wall clock. It was time for the next class. “It was an honor to have spent this hour with you, but I must go. I don’t want to be late again,” he said as he grabbed his luggage. “See you later, Shi Qingxuan,” he says with a smile.

“See ya!” Shi Qingxuan waves his hand to him.

I’ve got time—fifteen minutes before the class starts. Xie Lian went up the stairs to classroom 307. He was about to open the door when an arm blocked his way. And when he looked up, Xie Lian saw a man leaning by the doorframe.
