For a long time, Eddie lived with the fear that he'd never get to treasure the little things. He didn't think a love like this was something in his future — something real, something anyone could have. Not meant for someone like him.

He was so very wrong.

Sat here in his kitchen at three o'clock in the morning with his bare legs pressed up against cold tile, Eddie has never been happier. He and Buck are sat on the floor cutting fancy oranges with knives they'd fished out of the dishwasher they'd forgotten to turn on that evening, and he wouldn't change a thing.

They do this sometimes. When one or both of them can't sleep.

Crack open a window, let the yellowish glow from the streetlamp outside flood the room. Sit on cold kitchen tiles because fuck it, they're in their thirties and they're married and they're renting a house together, so who's going to tell them what they can and can't do?

The slight chill keeps Eddie grounded and allows him to remain here, with Buck. Prevents him mistakenly wandering through the darkened passageways of his own mind.

So. They've got a chopping board on the floor and they're cutting oranges on it, and Eddie is as content as he's ever been.

Buck is getting orange juice absolutely everywhere.

It's running off the chopping board and onto the floor, settling in rivulets between the tiles. It's on his fingertips, on his hands and running down his wrists. Earlier Buck had accidentally squeezed a particularly plump fruit and the juice had squirted halfway across the room.

Eddie had laughed. He hadn't worried about the cleanup or about the house still smelling of oranges in three weeks time. To be frank, he doesn't give a shit. There are worse things in the world than a little juice.

Eddie would know. Eddie has been to war, he's watched his wife die and his kid grieve and the man he loves run full-pelt into danger more times than he can count.

It doesn't matter. None of that can touch him here.

"Eddie," Buck whispers. "There's juice literally everywhere. It's on my hand and my leg and my socks, and—shit, I think I might've got some on you too." He looks apologetic, as though Eddie isn't perfectly aware of the mess they're making. As if he isn't enjoying every second.

He laughs again now. Or—well, it's more of a giggle. Eddie is tired, okay? He doesn't have the energy left to control the sounds working their way up his throat, giddy and carefree. "I know. This is— God, this is so fucking stupid," he whispers back, voice almost reverent.

Buck's entire face softens, hand falling slack as he drops the knife. Then he's leaning over to kiss Eddie, a hand coming up to cradle his cheek, and it's messy and wet and Buck's hand is covered in juice and Eddie does not care.

He's just happy.

Chim: Buckley, Diaz

Chim: Why are you both so tired today? Is something going on? 🤔

Buck: haha

Buck: um

Eddie: We stayed up half the night cutting oranges🍊

Chim: What😟

Eddie: Yes, you read that right

Hen: Do you regret asking yet?

Chim: Yeah. I really do😐

Hen: I did warn you

Christopher Diaz and Eddie Diaz

@16:32

Chris: what were you and buck laughing at last night?

Chris: were you watching something without me??🙁

Eddie: We were cutting oranges🍊

Eddie: On the floor

Eddie: In the kitchen

Chris: what?

Chris: why?

Eddie: Couldn't tell you, mijo🙃

Eddie: Sometimes things just happen

Chris: right😐

Chris: is work fun?

Eddie: It's a slow day

Eddie: Just a crash and a fall so far

Eddie: No major casualties

Chris: nice👍

Eddie: Oh my god

Eddie: Buck was RIGHT

Chris: what

Eddie: The thumb is evil

Chris: 👍

Chris: hope it stays quiet

Christopher Diaz and Evan Buckley

@16:59

Buck: CHRIS

Buck: YOU SAID THE Q-WORD?? D:

Chris: i thought dad didn't believe in the q-word?

Buck: your dad might not, but the rest of us do!!

Chris: ...oops🤐

Chris: did it work?

Buck: YES IT WORKED

Buck: there's a building on fire

Buck: gotta dash

Chris: it really is a magic word, huh🤔

Buck: cursed.

Buck: the word you're looking for is cursed

It's been a long day. One of those that seems to drag on forever, where Buck's body decides it's giving up before the sun has even reached its peak.

Work was rough. Non-stop calls: stupid, menial things that take more time and energy than they're worth. It's part of the job, Buck knows — most of the time he doesn't mind it — but today he's dead on his feet and just about done with it all.

He wants to go home.

Fiddling with the strap of his duffel while he waits for Eddie to finish up, Buck lets himself lean back and do nothing for the first time all day.

It's nice. Simple. Uncomplicated, and nobody's life hangs in the balance. Quite often, Buck will just lay on the floor and stare up at nothing when he's feeling overwhelmed. Occasionally, Eddie or Chris will join him for a session. That's nice, too.

For obvious reasons, Buck can't lay on the floor here at the station, but this is almost as good.

"You ready to go?" Eddie asks, slinging his bag over one shoulder and grabbing the keys out of his back pocket.

"Yeah," Buck sighs wearily. "Looking forward to getting home and going to bed, if I'm honest."

Eddie nods sympathetically. "We'll be home soon. Quick shower, then we can crawl into bed together?"

"Doesn't Chris need picking up?"

Eddie blinks. Stops in his tracks, looking around as though his schedule will suddenly have been graffitied all over the the walls of the fire station. "Shit. Yeah, that's today."

"We'll be postponing our nap, then?"

Eddie hums. "Seems like it." He glances over at Buck. "I can go get him if you just wanna go straight home and get some rest. I don't mind," he offers.

"Nah." Buck shakes his head. "We'll go together."

Eddie smiles, knocking his shoulder into Buck's. "Alright. Whatever you want, Buck."

I want you, his brain supplies. Even now, after being married for half a year and together for a lot longer than that, the warm buzz beneath Buck's ribs and the fuzzy feeling in his stomach hasn't dissipated. If anything, it's only grown stronger the more time he's spent with Eddie.

There is truly nowhere he'd rather be.

Eddie: Why does Athena get a free pass?

Hen: She has an important job to do

Eddie: So do I?!🙄

Maddie: Debatable

Eddie: Your brother and husband both do the same job

Maddie: Exactly.

Hen: That proves nothing

Eddie: So do you, Hen. I don't know why you're talking🤨

Hen: You were not on shift last week

Eddie: No, I picked up whatever illness Chris had a couple weeks ago

Eddie: It was not fun, I'll tell you that much😑

Karen: wait what

Karen: why didn't you just say something instead of standing us up?

Eddie: I would have

Eddie: But it just kind of slipped my mind

Maddie: 😕

Maddie: All is forgiven🫂

Hen: Hold on hold on

Hen: Not so fast!

Hen: Why did you tell us you were with Buck, then?

Eddie: Because he's my husband? We live in the same house?

Eddie: He's an absolute angel and was helping me out?🤗
