Her Eyes Were Huge Things

Summary:

Tane Dazai and Tetsuo Dazai just barely got home from their date, their son had been left alone just this one time because he managed to convince them to let him be home alone for once. He was fifteen, usually they hired a babysitter and maybe that was strange because he was too old for it but they didn't care. See, their son was a bit suicidal, they didn't trust him. This was the first time they decided to actually trust his word that he wouldn't do anything stupid and it was a mistake they'll never make ever again.

Work Text:

"Osamu! We're home sweetheart!" Tane yelled as they entered the house, she knew her son wasn't asleep yet. He loved to stay up for hours during the night. But weirdly he didn't respond this time.

Her brows furrowed in slight concern but she decided not to start worrying immediately. She removed her coat and hanged it in the hanger, Tetsuo, her husband did the same.

"You think he went to sleep early for once?" Tetsuo muttered with a bit of humor in his tone, he followed his wife to the kitchen, switching the light on so they could see.

"There's no way he's asleep already. You know how that boy is. Always staying up until the morning." She muttered back, a small smile on her face, she shook her head and put their leftovers in the microwave.

Those leftovers were for osamu, they always saved something for him to eat after every date. Sometimes going as far as to buy him something to eat before they got home. There was nothing wrong with having a little snack at night.

"Why don't you go look for him? Let him know we're home already?"

She looked at him and nodded, with that she walked out of the kitchen, down the hallway towards the stairs.

She was wearing a black dress, it was long, it went off her shoulders, her heels clacked against the floorboards as she headed toward osamu's room. She wore a gold necklace around her neck, a mother's day gift from a month ago from her husband and osamu.

Now standing in front of his door, she turned the doorknob and peeked in. Her brows furrowed even more in concern as she didn't see the young man laying down in bed. In fact he was nowhere to be found in the room.

"Hey Tetsuo? Osamu didn't say he was going out tonight right?" She called out loud from the upstairs, a second later and he answered.

"Uh, no, I don't think so. Why?" Tetsuo yelled back, there was concern in his tone now. "Is he not in his room! Maybe check the bathroom, he's probably taking a shower or something!"

"Yeah, let me check real quick!"

She tried to calm down her panic, inhaling slowly before exhaling softly. Once she felt a little calmer she shut the door, walked down further through the hallway, and opened the bathroom door on the left.

She didn't open it completely, osamu could be in there. She didn't want to accidently peek in on him if he really did happen to be showering or bathing. But then again, she couldn't hear any water.

"Osamu? You in there sweetie?"

"..."

There was no response and it only made her more worried. She stood there for a few seconds, waiting for a response that wasn't coming. After a few more seconds passed and she still got no response, she quietly pushed the door open more and entered.

What she saw would keep her awake for many nights.

It was osamu, her osamu, and he was in the tub, his hand was hanging out of the claw tooth white tub.

Now that she noticed, the lights were off, it was very dark in here, except for the moonlight shining in from the small window near the toilet.

She didn't scream, she put a hand to her mouth, her hands trembled in fear before she slowly pushed the shower curtain to the side.

The tub was filled to the brim, almost spilling over to the tiled floor, he was sinked down, eyes open, empty, he looked dead. It was a sickening sight, she felt sick to her stomach. She wanted to puke her guts out.

"TETSUO! CALL THE AMBULANCE, NOW!" She yelled loudly, her voice was filled with panic and worry.

She hurried grabbed him by his armpits and pulled him out, she was gentle but also rough with his body because she was panicking but trying to stay as calm as she could.

"Baby? Baby. Baby wake up."

She laid him out on the floor, almost immediately she put her hands against his chest and began doing CPR.

She only knew how to do CPR because she took first aid classes in the past when she was in school just like her osamu.

Tear droplets fell into his pale, sickish looking face. He wasn't breathing, she couldn't see his chest moving up and down like he should be doing.

She pressed down once, twice than thrice.

"Come on baby. Wake up."

She opened his mouth, and blew air into his mouth before repeating the process.

It didn't seem to be working but she kept trying, not caring if she damaged his insides. She just kept going, kept pressing on his ribs and blowing more air into his mouth.

"Wake up baby. Osamu, baby please wake up."

A few seconds later and he finally gasped, like he came back alive. He coughed out water harshly, his hands went to his throat.

She turned him on his side and firmly patted his back, she wasn't gentle either.

Once he expelled most of the water out of his lungs, she pulled him into a tight grasp, pushing his head into her shoulder.

He was dazed, everything hurt, his throat burned, his chest throbbed like hell, his ribs were hurting so badily. He just sat there, his face buried into her neck, listening as she sobbed her heart out while holding him.

He was starting to realize that maybe this wasn't the smartest decision to make, what the hell is he doing here?

Three days later he was discharged from the hospital. He didn't remember much from that night, the only thing he remembered was the pain of everything hurting as well as his heart. It hurt him inside to hear his mom cry so hard.

He remembers hearing the sirens of an ambulance arriving, taking him, putting him on a stretcher. His mom riding with him, the whole time she held his hand and stayed with him. He was pretty sure his dad drove to the hospital to meet them there.

She wasn't mad with him, she was pretty understanding as well as dad. He wished they were mad at him, punish him, not be so understanding to him. They were too sweet, he didn't deserve it.

He scared the shit out of them and yet they still loved him all the same.

Once he heals from his broken ribs, he was going to have to go to therapy. Thankfully, he didn't have to go to a mental hospital, his parents refused it. They knew those kind of places, a lot of the time people weren't treated well and they didn't want the same for him.

So they came up with a plan, the therapist would come over once every single week, always on a monday and if not then Tuesday. But there was still time, he still needed to heal.

Right now he was just about to take a bath, dad was going to help him. He really didn't want help with a bath but there was nothing he could do. They didn't trust him to be alone in bathrooms anymore and also because of his injured ribs.

Mom and dad usually took turns bathing him. It wouldn't stay that way for long which he was happy about. But he'll have to admit, he enjoyed their gentle hands washing his hair and the gentle scrubbing towards his body. He was usually so rough with his own body so the gentleness was a gift.

Just as he was thinking about it, dad came into the room, standing in the doorway as he always did. The man was wearing a collared shirt and black slacks, dress shoes, the usual get up he was used to seeing him wear.

"Hey buddy. You ready to bathe?" Tetsuo murmured, his tone gentle as he stood there. A hint of exhaustion in his expression but not because he was tired of the routine, more like he was exhausted of seeing his son suffer so much.

Dazai grimaced, at one point he wanted to say that no he wasn't ready to bathe, but then again, the gentleness of being bathed by a another person was comforting. He kind of felt embarrassed for feeling that way, he was fifteen, not a little kid anymore.

"Will I ever be?" The young man grumbled dryly, he lifted the corner of the blanet covering him and tried to carefully push himself up. Grunting as he made effort to move, it irritated his ribs.

"Hey, hey, let me help you. That's what me and your mom are here for."

Tetsuo stepped towards him, leaned over to slip one arm underneath his shoulders and the other went behind his back.

His dad brought him to the bathroom after he complained like he always did. Tetsuo was glad at least that part of his son stayed, his very pouty and petulant attitude that would always be there.

Twenty minutes later and he was brought back to his room, hair damp, now wearing fresh clothing that was warm and cozy. He was wrapped under the covers, pain medication was given to him so he was fast asleep.

Such a big kid tetsuo swore as he stood there and watched him nap.

While he felt a lot of guilt and sadness for that night three days ago, he was still capable of feeling exasperated by how big of a baby his son was. Osamu definitely liked being babied and he knew it, his wife knew it, everybody knew it. His heart still hurt as he looked at his son, hopefully things will get better and osamu will feel better one day.

Not just physically but mentally too.
