Switchblade (British band)

Switchblade (stylized as SWITCHBL4DE) are a British electronic music band based in Chicago, Illinois. It was founded by George Russell, Alexander ‘Alex’ Albon, and Max Verstappen. They are known for being one of the pioneers of the electroclash genre, though they frequently reject the label.

Russell and Albon met Verstappen while living abroad in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Switchblade officially formed in 2011 after they struck up a friendship and eventually moved in together. The trio began working on music by recording on Verstappen’s laptop. The band’s first two releases are the EPs No One Wants to Party with Us and We Don’t Smoke Crack (Because We Don’t Know Where to Find It), both released in 2012 through SoundCloud. 

Switchblade released their debut studio album, King Lynn, independently in 2013. It was featured in year-end lists by Pitchfork, NME, The Quietus, and The Guardian. In March 2014, the band’s infamous experimental performance at South by Southwest resulted in them being booed off stage and received widespread negative reviews from music critics. In 2020, one critic wrote in a retrospective that it was “one of the worst and least competent performances to ever happen in this century.” The band then became inactive after releasing their EP, Night Shade, in August 2014. The mystery behind their performance as well as their reserved online presence earned them a cult following over the years. 

They resumed activities in 2018 with a DJ set on NTS Radio. It featured an isolated track titled “Lake Michigan”, marking the first proper material from the band since Night Shade. The reunion happened without member Max Verstappen who gave a cryptic comment about the situation on Twitter, hinting that he was unfairly kicked out. There were speculations about a new album potentially being on the way after the set, but nothing was ever confirmed. 

In 2020, Switchblade remixed the track "Victim" by The Incels. There have been no known activities since then.

I wish he wasn't so secretive about his life bc I want to know why everything played out the way it did. Everything I know about Switchblade directly contradicts what I know about him. Like, he's allegedly rich with an okay (??) relationship with his family, but he was already living alone and abroad at 17. Then his music is always referencing addiction and mental illness and rocky relationships but then when you see him he looks like a very clean and posh man with plenty of friends. What the hell?

A fan claimed to have seen the site open on George’s phone when meeting him one night. The evidence is messy—the post was allegedly made right after the fan talked to him outside of a bar in Stockholm, but judging from George’s and Alex’s social media posts and other fansightings, they hadn’t been in Europe for months at that time—so Lando, along with many others, believes it’s bullshit.

First Lacuna Coil now Within Temptation. Even Nightwish is currently stuck doing this weird rendition of folk metal that's so far removed from their symphonic roots and they all feel like completely different bands now. Okay, this is slowly diving into topics that have been regurgitated a million times. Yes, everyone wants to know about Max despite him being perfectly active in his own band now, and yes, everyone believes this new generation of electroclash artists are trying and failing to brand themselves as George and Alex so effortlessly did at their age. 

It’s approaching 4AM. Lando figures he’ll sleep.

“So…how have things been since we last met?”

Lando shrugs. “Weird, I guess.”

“Weird, how?”

“I don’t know,” Lando shrugs again, because he doesn’t really know, and he’s not sure how he can be more specific than that. 

But Fewtrell doesn’t falter. The smile he always wears for reasons unknown to Lando (maybe to make him feel more comfortable, he supposes) remains intact as he reaches for a pen. “Last time, you said you felt like you were collapsing on yourself. Would you still say that’s true?”

“Probably.”

“What does ‘probably’ mean?”

“It means I don’t know.”

“Alright,” Fewtrell clicks his pen, presses it to his writing pad. “Then try describing how you’re currently feeling, then.”

Lando picks at the skin underneath his fingernail. He suddenly can’t bring himself to look at Fewtrell.

“I’m just exhausted every day. And I think about death a lot, but like, not in a suicidal way, more like a ‘my time is running out’ kind of way.”

Scribble. Scribble.

“Why do you think it’s running out?” Fewtrell says next. 

“I’m getting older.”

“So that fact fills you with dread?”

It does, actually. It fills Lando with more dread than he can handle sometimes. He’s an adult who’s still living with the same thoughts and emotions and coping mechanisms he had as a teenager, and no amount of self-reflection or fresh starts or therapy or medication combinations seem to be able to fix him. There are the rare moments where he finds something worthwhile to indulge in, but then he ends up liking it so much that he starts thinking about all the other amazing things that are waiting for him to discover, and then, for a second or two, he feels a new appreciation for life, develops a new outlook that maybe life isn’t about self-improvement but about staying in constant pursuit of whatever gives him this feeling, but then he worries he’ll never have the time get to all of what’s unknown to him, and then remembers his time is finite anyway, meaning it’s very likely he’ll never get to it regardless of what he does, and then he’s back to square one, the cycle repeating. 

He’s currently at both the ‘woah, there’s so much art to explore!’ and the ‘I need to appreciate this while I can’ phases of the cycle.

He crosses his arms over his chest. “Well, not at the moment.”

There’s a hint of surprise in Fewtrell’s voice. “Okay. Why not?”

“I found something to distract myself with.”

Click. A page turn. 

“Is it the band you mentioned last time?”

“What band?”

“Switchblade.”

Lando heats. “Oh…yes…”

Click. Scribble. Scribble. 

“It's good to have things we enjoy,” Fewtrell says. “You didn't go into much detail about them beyond liking their music in our last session, though. Is that all you've been doing? Listening to them?”

This is so embarrassing. 

Everything Lando likes is embarrassing. 

“I mean, yeah? That and, uh, watching their content and joining discussions forums and stuff…I don't know…”

He expects Fewtrell to shoot him yet another question; he hums and takes a moment to think instead (and Lando mentally rolls his eyes, because the philosophical look Fewtrell has right now indicates it's time for their self-analysis segment). 

“You know,” he starts. “Sometimes we get fixated on things that represent a subconscious desire we have. The music is one thing, but maybe there's something about the members themselves that speak to you or a thing you may want for yourself.”

It’s not like Lando hasn't considered that. He's questioned what makes George and Alex so appealing to him, questioned why he feels a magnetic pull to something so left field, but never came up with anything substantial. They're talented, and the music is good, and their chemistry is exciting to watch, but honestly, the ‘pull’ Lando is feeling is probably due to the fact he thinks George is one of his wet dreams come to life. 

He can’t say that to Fewtrell, of course. 

He resumes picking at his fingernails. “Uh, well, I guess their bond is interesting. Like, they're both pretty weird, but they've managed to find each other and create something out of that weirdness. I don't know…”

Does he know anything?

A half-nod from Fewtrell. 

Scribble. Scribble. 

“So…their friendship is appealing to you?”

“Yeah.”

“And do you think that may have anything to do with the loneliness you mentioned before?”

“Uh…”

Lando doesn't really have an answer. He's made peace with the fact he'll never have a connection like that in his life, so it's not like he wants it for himself more than he finds it nice to observe. He doesn't have his person, and he never will, but here's two people who are each other’s person, and here's the life they've carved for themselves together, and wow, isn't it beautiful? 

He accidentally breaks the skin on his fingerpad. He doesn't react to the sting. 

“No…I don't think so. I don't think I would like being that close to someone.”

Scribble scribble, and Lando knows Fewtrell is connecting that to his so-called ‘fear of intimacy’ they've discussed in the past.

“So it's appealing because it's not you?”

It’s voiced more as a judgement than a question.

Lando shrugs again. “Pretty much.”

His brain feels like it's leaking out of his ears. He can hear Fewtrell speaking again, but he can't be bothered to listen anymore. He's more concerned with what he's going to do after this. Maybe watch a movie, scroll through some Letterboxd reviews, end the night with an edible and George’s hypnotic vocals or video edits of him on TikTok in spite of his medication. 

Maybe he'll just go to sleep.

The clips I've seen floating around literally sound normal. So what’s the deal? Were they just ahead of their time or what?

I was there, and no it wasn't bad. It sounded fine. I think people were put off by George’s delivery tho bc it was obvious he was strung out on some downers and I assume if you weren't familiar with their work beforehand that would've been disturbing to see. But yeah they were fine

There was a thread on here in like 2016 or so about the set and a lot of comments said they were so intrigued by what they saw that they looked Switchblade up as soon as they got home and became fans. So even if they didn't like it initially, they came around to it anyway lol

Okay, so this person is nice, is presumably knowledgeable in sound engineering (or whatever that would be called, Lando doesn't know), and shockingly conversational. If this were still the time when Lando didn't care about how he were perceived, he would reach out to this person privately and ask them what else they know about Switchblade, if there's anything else that has been misconstrued due to time, or if there's anything they know that could be considered rare so he can add it to his collection that hasn't made much progress in the past few days, but today is now, and Lando cares very much about how he's perceived even if there's a screen to protect him, so he's not going to do that. 

He wants to, though. Just a little.

They’re more of a status symbol than a band these days. Most of their current fans are too young to have experienced them during their peak, so when they wear switchblade merch or slap their logo on something they’re just trying to signal to others that they’re part of the underground and have taste. I don’t hear many people talking about the music itself, just how cool and exclusive you have to be to understand the appeal.

While I’m in love with their music, I think this current resurgence is somewhat owed to George’s and Alex’s lifestyle. They’re interesting because these days they’re always photographed living in these clean and polished social circles, but there was once a time when they were known for their presence that was filled with bloodstained car seats, late night home visits from EMTs, bruises from fights, trash fires in the woods, photos and videos of themselves in hospital beds, etc. It gives them an edge no one else in the underground currently has despite everyone trying to recreate it. That + them being known for pioneering something no one else thought of at the time at such a young age + their secrecy, it’s not hard to understand why they’ve become mystical figures here.

This thread is inevitably going to get hijacked by naysayers who claim to listen to ‘real underground music’ made by ‘real musicians’ and how that doesn't include a pretty boy who used to mumble into a microphone while high on drugs he most likely sourced with his parents' money and posting pictures online to give the illusion that he has the life to back up his lyrics in the music, which they know was an illusion, because no one struggles that much while living in The Netherlands and traveling internationally, obviously.

You either get it or you don't tbh. Personas aside, I love them because they manage to be chilling and comforting and ethereal and trippy and fun all at once. There’s an authenticity in what they do that’s missing from what everyone else is doing currently. Everyone wants to be “iconic” and “subversive” without doing anything to earn those titles while also throwing a tantrum whenever they get the slightest amount of pushback. But then there’s George and Alex who shut up and just walk the walk. They don’t need to prove anything to anyone. They just create and whether you fuck with it or hate it is not their concern at all. They’re not asking to be liked. They’re not even asking to be taken seriously. The fact that they made minimal changes to how they perform after the sxsw incident says so much about them. Who else would do that? And idrc what anyone else says, they're just the best in the genre and probably always will be. There’s good acts, sure, but no one does it quite like them. No one can replicate the honesty in their lyrics and aesthetic. 

EDIT: I forgot to mention idk why people think George and Alex are faking. Living alone at such a young age in a foreign country then moving in with a guy you met after knowing him for two weeks and already getting into questionable shit sounds like such a mindfuck. You have to wonder what events happened to allow that without their parents or authorities stepping in at any point. Just bc they live differently now doesn't make any of that less true

Hey! I found you under the post I made about Switchblade. I really liked what you said about their authenticity vs the curated personas everyone likes to put on these days because I agree but have been too scared to say it myself lmfao. But also…I’m curious how you got into them? I saw some of your posts and from what I’ve gathered you don’t listen to anything remotely similar to them, so I’m intrigued. 

Lando studies the paragraph as if blinking enough times will make an answer reveal itself. 

It’s too open-ended. Seriously, there's too many angles he could try to approach this from. He could be honest and brief; he could be honest and tell the full story; he could give a reason for why Switchblade in particular captivates him so much; he could lie and say he listens to plenty of artists like them, and his profile doesn't do his taste justice despite having his account for five years.

I travel a lot for work and I've seen firsthand how ass the British counterculture scene is compared to everywhere else. Like everyone knows America has some crazy creative people but did you know there’s some wild shit coming out of Colombia right now too? I had a lot of fun when I went there, met a ton of cool people

Like oh my god last year I had this night in Poland where I got sick from eating at this shady restaurant and I ended up being rushed to an equally shady hospital bc I had a seizure lmfao. They couldn't understand me but they wouldn't let me have my phone either so I was just in the er freaking the fuck out and lowkey paralyzed while all these doctors just watched it was so humiliating

But when I got discharged and went back to the hotel with my friend I decided it could be a funny story instead of an embarrassing moment. Almost dying in Poland is some crazy shit you'd hear from Switchblade or whatever yk. It's just an experience

SWITCHBLADE RETURN WITH ‘HEIGHT’, THEIR FIRST SINGLE IN TWELVE YEARS

SWITCHBLADE, the Chicago-based British electroclash pioneers, are back with a new single, ‘Height’.

In the accompanying music video, directed by member Alexander Albon, SWITCHBLADE are seen walking around through security footage with fuzzy VHS-style clips of tennis tournaments spliced in between. This comes after vocalist George Russell was seen with tennis player Jannik Sinner a few weeks earlier. 

Along with the single comes the announcement of their second album, ‘Enemy’. In their signature fashion, it’ll have a surprise release date, though they claim it’ll be released sometime in April. The band’s last release of official material was 2014’s EP Night Shade. It is also their first endeavor without founding member Max Verstappen. 

“People always pick up the negative aspects of our music, and at the time, that was true to what we were going through,” the band said in a press release. “But the core element in our music was always freedom, and we want to highlight that more clearly now.”

He just opened the door for another conversation, and the more conversations they have, the longer this connection will last, and the longer it lasts, the more hopeful Lando will become. It won't go anywhere, he knows that, so he needs to be careful, needs to learn how to keep himself in check whenever he feels the urge to jump the gun. Fewtrell: “Do you not believe you deserve to be treated with kindness, Lando?”

Lando has his hood over his eyes; he can't see Fewtrell nor does he want to. He rests his head against the back of his chair, faces the ceiling where the light barely penetrates the fabric. “Not really, no.”

“Why not?”

“It just gives me hope that there's something worth liking about me, and I don't think I should feel that when that always gets proven wrong.” 

He hears Fewtrell take a breath. 

Scribble. Scribble. 

“Okay…then how do you think you should be treated?”

“I would like someone to be honest with me for once. Or maybe blunt is the better word.”

Really, Lando would like someone to observe him for a day, then grab him by the shoulders and sit him down and tell him every flaw of his they flagged. He would listen intently, without emotion, ball his hand into a fist and hit himself in the thigh or arm or stomach for each thing they list off. He talks too much? Hit. He never sits still? Hit. He can't take anything seriously? Hit. He's actually an asshole when he thinks he's being kind? Hit. 

Hit, hit, hit, and Lando would take that pain, store it, and remember it each time he meets someone new. That way he’ll always be aware that he isn't deserving of the other person’s time, that way he'll never be surprised when the other person inevitably abandons him.

Fewtrell: “I’m curious what you mean by that. Like, Oscar is the person closest to you, right?”

Lando doesn't talk to Oscar anymore. He’s had too many failures in his six months of knowing Fewtrell, so he's refrained from mentioning it, not wanting Fewtrell to think even lower of him than Lando already knows he does. 

“Right.”

“Is he not honest with you?”

Lando pulls his hood down further. “He is, or at least I think he is. He's honest with everyone. But he's so nice, too. Always telling me how great I am and looking out for me or whatever.”

Click. Scribble. 

“So, from your own words, you already have someone honest in your life,” comes another breath from Fewtrell. 

“No, but it's not the same.”

“Why not? Because he's nice?”

“Yeah! Anyone could be nice to me.”

There's a beat of silence. It makes Lando realize he's never realized how loudly the clock ticks in this office. He can feel the sting of Fewtrell’s eyes on him, probably looking at him incredulously like he's an idiot, but he doesn’t care. What makes sense to him doesn’t have to make sense to anyone else. 

“So…Honesty only matters to you if it hurts you?”

“I think if someone is brave enough to tell you what you don’t want to hear but need to, then that means they just want what’s best for you.”

Fewtrell hums. “Okay, then let’s say that’s true. How does only being told ‘bad’ things about yourself help you in the long run?”

Has he been listening to Lando at any point during this session?

Flat. “It’ll just keep me in check.”

Scribble. Scribble. A page turning. 

“And do you think other people would benefit from being ‘kept in check’ that way? Or just yourself?”

Lando shrugs. “I don’t know. Everyone isn’t me. Their needs are probably different.”

He thinks he knows what Fewtrell’s next question will be: if there’s a particular reason he’s suddenly preoccupied with this now, if something planted the idea in his head, or if he’s always thought this way and something happened that made him comfortable enough to finally admit it. Lando’s answer would be…all three? It’s not a new idea to him, but it always sat in the back of his mind, piloting his behavior passively, loud enough for him to remember it after a sour interaction, quiet enough for him to forget it when things went smoothly. 

It reared its head with force after his conversation with 63, though. ‘See ya’—why on Earth did Lando say that? What made him think someone as nice and smart and cultured like 63 would want to continue talking to him for more than a couple of days? Did he forget who he was? Did he forget the things people apparently say about him in private, that he's difficult and rowdy and requires too much attention and energy to care for? Did he think 63 wouldn’t eventually start thinking the same things just because he said something as basic as ‘talk later’?

Lando has reread that conversation more times than he can count. He's concluded that he was annoying and overly familiar, and what he thought was 63 being calm and contained was actually him being uninterested, and if Lando had been given a list of his own flaws beforehand, he would've known what to look out for, would've corrected course by giving himself a bruising each time he made a mistake, and maybe, just maybe, the conversation would've been smoother. 

But then he has to ask himself: why does 63 matter so much? His emotions would make sense if this were someone he met in person, but this is a faceless acquaintance locked behind a screen. They’ve only spoken a whopping total of three times. Who cares what someone Lando can't even see thinks about him? 

But they live in the same area. And they have the same interests. And Lando finds it easy to talk to him, which can't be said for most of the people he's known in the past. And there's always a chance that, if he keeps trying, this connection could become meaningful. 

Hope.

It's always hope.

“Lando?”

Lando finally lifts his hood. Fewtrell is looking at him with a tilted head and concerned eyes. 

“Huh?”

“I said, we're almost out of time, so I think we should move on to medication.”

Oh. Right. Like that's been helping Lando at all during the six months he's taken them.

“Okay. What about it?”

Fewtrell is looking at his computer screen now. “I think now would be a good time to continue titrating your Wellbutrin. And the Abilify—any complaints so far?”

“I don't know,” Lando picks one of his hair strands, wraps it around his finger, frustrated. “Isn't it supposed to make me sleep? It's not making me sleep.”

“What do you mean? It doesn't make you tired at all?”

Lando shakes his head. “I keep fidgeting like a bitch, though. I feel like I have so much energy that I can't stay still anymore.”

Finally, a new emotion from Fewtrell is unlocked. He looks…alarmed?

A frown. “What?”

“Nothing,” Fewtrell resigns (and Lando knows it's bullshit, and that irritates him, because why does everyone act like they need to walk on eggshells around him with certain things?). “Sounds like the dosage is too low for you. We’ll titrate that as well, okay?”

Isn't the highest dosage 30mg? Lando is already at 20mg—is that really necessary?

He doesn't have the energy to argue. Fewtrell is the expert, and Lando doesn't know what he needs in this regard. 

Maybe he's just fucking crazy.

the night behind switchblade’s surprise release

it’s 12am on a wednesday. i’m leaving karaoke night. switchblade texts me and tells me to come over. 

i get to their hotel and the door is already open. i enter cautiously. alex is drinking a beer on the couch. george is making fun of me for being too polite.

they had sent me a few tracks the week before. it’s 1am now. 

they decide they want to release their album as soon as possible. it's already mixed, and alex wants to release it tomorrow. george tells him no one releases an album on a thursday—they should wait until friday night at the latest. 

the working title is ‘pygmalion’. alex says it’s too similar to slowdive’s ‘pygmalion’. george says no one listens to slowdive anymore. alex agrees, but he worries they'll try to sue them. so they go with something simpler: enemy. 

i suggest they should only release a single. a full album after over a decade of silence might be too much for listeners to take in. it takes a little discussion, but they see my point. 

now it’s time to choose which song should be the single. alex suggests 'pontiac g6’. that makes george remember his ex. he starts tearing up. 

it’s 3am now. they've decided on a song. vigilante shit by taylor swift is playing on george’s bluetooth speaker. alex has reached out to a friend for help with choosing the single cover, but they aren't responding. 

there’s a vase of flowers sitting near the entrance. i take a picture of it on my iphone. both george and alex like how it looks. george says they want something like my picture for the cover. alex says they should just use it.

the single is out at 9am. they decide to use one of their archived moodboards as the music video. It receives high praise from reviewers some hours later. 

i truly think they are the best artists in the world right now.

We went through so much shit together and at that point they were one of the only two people who I felt really knew my soul and I didn’t want to lose that bc everyone else around me was fake and shallow so I just toughed it out and felt like shit about it the entire time

Lando finds himself smiling to no one. It’s the consideration, he supposes, and the fact that 63 feels comfortable enough to be an open book despite only talking to him for a couple of days that puts Lando at ease. Where people are always fake, always secretive, always hearing but never listening, 63 is a breath of fresh air, and for a brief moment, Lando feels grateful to have stumbled upon him. He’s so perfect—he's smart and funny and insightful and tall and shares Lando’s interests and doesn't live far from him—that Lando almost wants to believe he was meant to find him. 

It’s not too far-fetched. Why else would Lando take an intense interest in Switchblade if it wasn't meant to lead him to something greater? And why would he click with a stranger this quickly and easily if they weren't meant to find each other? And their opinions—why would they align so perfectly they weren't meant to have a lasting connection?

This is new. This is meaningful. 

This is fate. 

It's too perfect not to be. 

Typical Lando, always jumping the gun, always making things larger than they need to be, always polishing them and displaying them on the highest pedestal he can imagine so he can have something to gawk at when he needs a reason to keep going. He should have learned something from all of his failures by now. He gets burned, and he tells himself he'll internalize the pain so he’ll never make the same mistake again, and he cries about it, melts down about it, punishes himself about it, and he meets someone new a couple of days after, and he gets carried away without a single doubt behind it, and he inevitably gets burned, and the cycle repeats, over and over and over again. 

63 just talks a lot. He wouldn't know as many people as he allegedly does if he didn't.

The concept of ‘casual’ has a hard time getting through to Lando.

The zooted soundtrack for Europe’s underbelly

“There's this song called ‘Crisis’ that I made when I was high off my ass on Vicodin,” says 18-year-old George Russell, the heartbeat of the trio. “It turned out really dark and hostile and a little haunted, so naturally, we decided to build our music off of that atmosphere. I don't think I could've made something like that while sober.”

This perfectly encapsulates what makes SWITCHBL4DE who they are: drugs. What appears as a group of teenagers attempting to mimic a lifestyle that makes them appear ‘edgy’ is actually a polarizing story about what happens to Europe’s disenfranchised youth. They live in their music, and their music lives in them. 

There's even a real story behind the title of one of their EPs We Don't Smoke Crack (Because We Don’t Know Where to Find It). “At the time, we really didn't know where to find it,” Alex explains. “But one night Max and I came home and found George smoking it in the kitchen. We got into a huge fight about it because he wasn't blowing the smoke out of the window like he was supposed to, so the whole apartment smelt like shit. We were having a yelling match when Max decided to hit the pipe for himself, and then we were all yelling at each other just to yell. Like, it wasn't about the smell anymore. I was just mad that I was fighting with crackheads who weren't listening to me and they were mad because they were amped up and I was ruining their high. It was a hilarious moment that stuck with us.”

Though humorous in retrospect, it makes sense why something as small as an unpleasant odor would cause such a disruption—SWITCHBL4DE worked hard for that apartment. Before finding their home in Antwerp, Belgium, the trio lived adrift for half a year in The Netherlands. 

“My dad caught us making out in his shed,” George says, gesturing between himself and Alex. “He freaked the fuck out and told everyone including Alex’s family, and we were kicked out after being shamed for it for days. We had nowhere to go, which kind of meant we could go anywhere, so we hopped on a ferry to a random destination and arrived in Holland, met Max, and didn't look back.”

The band wrote and recorded their first EP No One Wants to Party with Us in various locations, including garages, warehouses, metro tunnels, abandoned buildings, and an old man’s guesthouse. “He was fucking weird,” Max recounts. “But we liked him because he bought backwoods for us and was fine with the noise.”

Many dub SWITCHBL4DE as cryptic, but their aesthetics are merely snapshots of their lives: arson, hospitals, street drugs, fights, American rap, VHS tapes, and most things that will give any mother a heart attack. Some of these interests can be seen in their latest music video for Coup, directed solely by Alex. It features a naked woman he met through Tumblr filmed POV porn style while she smokes and lipsyncs to the camera. 

Right now, the band only has two EPs and a dozen unofficial singles under their belt. “We're thinking of a full-length album, but it's not something we're itching to do,” George states. “We just like to create. We don't have jobs, so we have all day to fuck around and come up with things we think are beautiful. It’s a hobby. We have plenty of material that'll probably never see the light of day.”

It’s a private account with less than 600 followers, and there's no name or bio, his profile picture is a wooden cross standing against a grey sky, and his posts are a random assortment of practically everything, ranging from edgy memes to farm animals to antique stores to tennis courts to grainy candids of people Lando presumes are either his friends or the locals he meets abroad. The photography is extremely lax and unprofessional, like he whipped out his camera and snapped each picture in the moment without a thought, even in the fancier settings (there's a few shots of expensive hotels and restaurants and shopping bags from high-end fashion stores and cars and yachts), yet it looks personal instead of tacky, like a memory caught instead of a misclick, and it's somehow still curated in a way that'd give anyone scrolling through his feed a glimpse into his life without revealing too much or anything at all, eerily similar to George’s feed before he moved to America…

Here's what Lando knows about Saturday:

1. He's a man in his early thirties, which ranges from thirty to thirty-three—thirty-four if Lando wants to be generous. He's quite tall, standing at 185cm, and he lives in England, though if that means he was born and raised there or simply moved in from somewhere else, Lando can’t tell. 

2. Except, wait, didn’t Saturday say he moved out of the country to avoid the fallout from his relationship? Where to? England? He did say Bristol wasn't too far from where he currently was, not where he lives…

3. Saturday travels a lot for work, but what his job actually entails is a secret, most likely for privacy or to avoid being doxxed. He’s also knowledgeable about different music scenes, and, if Lando is remembering his RateYourMusic profile correctly (he can't be bothered to check it right now), different types of music equipment, particularly ones used for electronic music, quite similar to the decks George and Alex use.

4. He knows many people and even goes out of his way to meet them, but is only close to one. This one friend is someone he grew up with. There was another person he grew up with—the one from his relationship—and all three were tight-knit until the breakup eight years ago or so. That's around the time Max announced his departure from Switchblade. 

5. Saturday seems aware of his self-destructive patterns. He claims he’s crazy and makes terrible decisions and has short-lived relationships due to his erratic behavior that’s likely induced by drugs and untreated mental illness. Fans have speculated that George may act the same way behind the scenes for the same reasons, given the lyrics he writes.

6. Saturday knows a lot about Switchblade. More than the average fan would know. Lando is aware that there are fans who have been there since the very beginning, but what are the odds that they've been there from the start, attended multiple shows early on in different countries (SXSW was in America—did he really fly out just for that? Or is he an American who flew out to Bristol for the other show?), remembers specific details from specific moments of their career, has access to rare material, and would even speculate something so personal as George making a suicide note into a song? 

Speaking of that, the overdose. How does Saturday know it was benzos? Lando checked the post Max made back then by finding a decade old thread dedicated to it, and his caption explained George had taken too much of something, but never specified what the something was. 

Saturday could have misremembered or assumed that detail, though.

7. Other long-term fans Lando has encountered all remember Max fondly and would at least welcome a statement about him if they can't get his return. They miss the soft vocals he brought to the music and believe he was an integral part to the band. Saturday, on the other hand, is annoyed by the fact that people keep asking about him in the first place, implying he doesn't want Max back and would prefer to move on from his involvement altogether, as if he has some personal gripe with him.

8. Which brings Lando to his next point: Saturday left for America a couple of days ago.

8. Switchblade live in America. The fact that Saturday is there right now doesn't mean anything on its own. Maybe Lando can scratch this for now. 

9. Except, now that he thinks about it, George and Alex moved to Chicago around the time of Max’s departure. So say that, for whatever reason, George and Max were dating at one point, and in order to get away from the hate or to start fresh or both after they broke up, Max was kicked out, and George moved to a new country with Alex. 

Sounds pretty familiar to Lando! 

But the likelihood of George and Max having been in a relationship is incredibly low. Lando did a bit of snooping to see how people perceived their dynamic back then, and, to put it plainly, no one had an inkling of romance happening between them, save for a handful of delusional shippers. 

10. And oh, wait, wasn't there that rumor about George lurking RateYourMusic that was debunked? The consensus of it being fake hinged on the fact that there were no known sightings of them in that area at the time. 

Saturday has been in England up until now. If George is Saturday, then there would have been no sightings of him there, either. 

But Saturday said he heard that Switchblade recorded their new album in King’s Lynn (this information was mentioned in another article written at the time of the album announcement, so Saturday is off the hook with this) which is in England, and George was seen having dinner with Jannik Sinner a few weeks ago…in England…

Possibility one: This is someone pretending to be George. Most of the things Saturday has told Lando are public information. If he's a lowlife degenerate with nothing better to do, it'd be easy to take it and dramatize it into something that seems real. 

The problem: There'd have to be an incentive for Saturday to go to a length that great. And don't impersonators just outright say who they're impersonating? It wouldn’t make sense for a normal person to pretend to be a celebrity pretending to be a normal person, especially for this long. 

Possibility two: This is George. If all of the stories he's told Lando are true, then it's safe to assume he lurks in fan spaces for fun but got roped in with Lando unintentionally. It’s neither of their faults that they happened to click immediately. 

The problem: What are the odds of Lando having this much in common with George fucking Russell? His life isn't a movie or a fanfic—something like that could never happen to someone like him, and if it did, it would never last, meaning what Lando foolishly (partially) hoped was fate coming to prove him wrong about his ticking clock was actually just a cycle repeating itself and wasting his time yet again.

A week passes without a word from Saturday. Lando decides to go out on the seventh day. 

“I always ask this after I sleep with someone, so don't be alarmed okay?”

That's a lie. He hasn't had a hookup in years—he stopped once he started dating Oscar—and in the short time he did, he never said more than an awkward “See ya,” once they were done.

But hookups are honest. Neither party owes the other anything. They just fuck and go, and that’s the kind of bluntness he can't seem to find anywhere else. 

So: 

“If you could change anything about how I did, what would it be?”

The man lights a cigarette; Lando balls his hand into a fist. 

“You talk too much,” the man says.

Lando winces as he dives his fist into his own thigh. “Oh, yeah. So I’ve been told.”

“And it's obvious you don't think about what you say before you say it,” the man continues. He's not even looking at Lando now, instead focused on the scenery of the parking lot outside of the hotel window. “You go on and on and it sounds really stupid.”

Lando chuckles breathlessly. “Haha…yeah…”

Hit. 

The smoke from the man’s cigarette is already forming a screen in front of his face, but Lando tries to peer through it anyway, because it's not enough to just hear the criticism, he needs to see the emotion behind it too. The man looks apathetic enough, hateful enough, like he's truly burdened by Lando’s presence and can't wait to push him out of the room, and that’s perfect, it's so perfect, it’s been so long since someone looked at Lando like he’s nothing more than dirt on their shoe, and it's so perfect that he can feel his eyes threatening to water. 

The man continues. “And you're so loud. I don't know why you're loud. It’s like you're trying to reenact porn and it's a turn-off.”

“Right…I need to work on that…”

Hit.

“It's such a shame, because you're so pretty, you know? I was really interested in you at first, but then you started saying some dumb shit. Took me out of it completely.”

Hit. 

“Uh, what did I say that was so wrong?”

The man shrugs, purposely exhales a large cloud of smoke in Lando’s direction. “Don't know. Didn't care enough to remember.”

That’s fair.

Hit.

The man, again: “My advice to you is to shut up. You're nice to look at and that's it. If I actually cared about you I would've asked you to dinner, yeah?”

“Yeah…”

The man stands up at that. He picks up Lando’s shirt from the ground and tosses—hurls—it at him. “Anyway. Goodnight.”

Lando clutches his shirt in his hands for a few moments, stares at it like it’s both familiar and foreign at once. Did he mean to wear the same shirt he wore for his last date with Oscar? Why hasn't he thrown it out yet? He's changed so much since then—this might as well not even belong to him anymore. 

He doesn't say goodnight, just offers a smile and a nod and fumbles with the doorknob before exiting the hotel room. 

He doesn't put on the shirt. He can't. It feels like it's burning his hands just from holding it and he's sure it'll burn his chest if he wore it, just like the rest of him is burning, his head and his insides and his ass and the part of his thigh where he's hit himself. The piss-yellow corridor lighting is disorienting, and the carpet that’s in desperate need of a hoover smells like a toxic chemical, and the button for the elevator is sticky and gets stuck inside the wall after several frantic presses, and the air suddenly feels thick with something that isn’t oxygen, and Lando feels like he can't breathe, and it takes everything within himself to not curl up on the floor and cry and cry and cry and cry like he wants to.

This can't be all his life is.

Why is this his life? He couldn't feel anything for the one person who actually cared about him, and now the one person he did start to feel something for—be it out of relatability or hope or blind faith—isn't who they said they were, and Lando has returned to where he's been returning to for years. 

It's because he talks too much. He's too loud. He's not smart. He's only good for his face. People lose interest in him as soon as he starts speaking. Unless he becomes mute or stitches his mouth shut, every relationship he encounters will meet the same fate. 

He fucked it up.

He always fucks up.

But the worst part is the fact that a small part of him is still waiting for Saturday. The day is approaching its end (it’s 11PM), yet he reaches for his phone as soon as the elevator doors close in front of him, pulling down his notification bar and hoping for anything, literally anything, hell, even for confirmation that he was right and Saturday deceived him by getting all of his stories from George then preceded to lie about being him just to inevitably admit he was lying about that too. Anything would be infinitely better than this silence he's had to suffer alone. 

Lando scrolls through each notification. 

He has an assignment due soon on Blackboard; two people liked his tweet about Slayyyter; one of his mutuals went live on Instagram an hour ago; there's a new trending post in the electroclash topic on RateYourMusic.
