Chapter 1: Doing nothing counts as something

Chapter Text

A lovely afternoon in Hometown, where the sun was beginning to hide, leaving its trail among small details. The night barely dared to arrive, peeking through golden rays and fading into the clouds. Meanwhile, Kris and Susie were just coming out of their so-called secret closet.

“I’m sure the fact that Ralsei made like five cakes wasn't pure coincidence. He doesn't even eat!! I want to believe they’re for everyone else, right?? Everyone in Castle Town must be hungry at some point in their lives.”

Susie spoke with her hands behind her head, walking toward the school exit alongside Kris, who simply laughed or nodded. “Well, it was fun, honestly. Any plans in mind? It’s still early and, I don’t have anything else to do.”

“…As always.”

“Shhh, shut up. Keep quiet like you always do.”

Susie stared at the sky for a few seconds, barely noticing it was starting to get dark.

“Let’s hang out. Even doing nothing counts as something.”

Kris simply smiled and nodded, leaning slightly toward Susie, making their shoulders bump every time they walked.

“Tch, why do they close everything so early? It’s not even past six p.m., please!”

“Maybe they want to go rest.”

“Well, I don't. Tell them to open up now, I demand it.”

Kris let out a little giggle, but their walk paused at the corner of Noelle's house, definitely realizing they didn't have much to do there—that Hometown is just... Hometown. They suppose that’s what makes it special.

“Let’s go to the lake.”

“And having you laughing at me again just because I don't throw the stones far enough? No thanks, idiot, I don’t need that.”

“Well, if that’s how you want it.”

The human began to walk south, glancing back every now and then to see if Susie was following, and she was. As soon as Kris saw Susie walking just behind them, they started to pick up the pace, faster and faster, until they were running.

“HEY GET BACK HERE THIS FREAKING INSTANT DUMBASS!”

she shouted, though there was no trace of anger—only a smile and a laugh she didn't even bother to hide as the lack of breath crept between them both, each on their own way. Kris reached the lake first, running but stopping just as they hit the edge... too bad a certain dragon arrived behind them, and—

“FUCK!”

“Sorry dude, this wasn’t part of my plan, but look at you now! You look SO FREAKING DUMB HAHAHAHAHA!”

Susie let out laughs so loud she could swear they were heard on the other side of town, though she also made sure to drape her jacket over Kris's shoulders.

They were clearly soaked, all because she hadn't stopped in time and had knocked them into the lake... by accident, of course.

“I swear to the Angel that once I see Ralsei again I’ll—” Kris's words were cut off by a sharp movement on their shoulders, shaking them as if she wanted to make them faint.

“YOU WON’T DO A SINGLE THING YOU DUMBASS, DON’T EVEN DARE TO THINK ‘BOUT DOIN’ IT.”

“…I hate you.”

“I hate you too, very much.”

But the fact that Susie had wrapped Kris in a hug, trying to warm them up—because they were still wet lol—didn't help that forced protest. Definitely not.

The night bathed them both, Kris sitting on the edge of the lake watching Susie play with the water, splashing their shoes or wetting her hair, which was so tangled you couldn't see a single straight strand.

“Are you bored yet?” Kris asked, still looking at Susie's face, who simply seemed to be in another world.

“Yeah. You?”

“Yeah.”

A silence submerged them both while they stayed there. How long had they even been there? Hours? Because even Kris was dry now, but they wouldn't let go of Susie's jacket, which for some reason was still warm and held her scent—that smell of blackberries and wild berries that definitely suited the dragon perfectly.

Kris’s view of Susie was simply beautiful in their eyes. Having her slightly close, with her knee bumping against their shoulder and her features glowing under the shy rays of moonlight.

“Whatcha lookin’ at, dork? Do I have something or...?? Quit staring at me, you freak!”

Susie took some lake water and splashed it in Kris's face, but just a little.

Susie got up from the ground and noticed how Kris simply stayed sitting for a while longer, at least another minute or two.

“Are you thinking ‘bout something?”

“Hmm, yeah.”

“What is it now?”

“Wanna stay over at my house? It’s cold and... tonight seems too nice to just watch you leave.”They got up from the ground and took Susie's hand, squeezing it—one that didn't even fully fit because of the huge size difference. “Please, will ya?”

“Do I have another option?” A tone of voice that tried to sound rough and annoyed, but the idea of being able to share another night at Kris's house lit up her night, like they were her only light during the darkness. “…Hell yeah, I’m on it.”

Luckily, the walk to Kris's house wasn't long, just a few blocks away, and it was better that it was tucked away in the neighborhood.

Another jackpot! Toriel wasn't home, so the whole house was theirs, just theirs.

“Make yourself comfortable, you know it’s your house too” Kris spoke without even turning around, walking straight to pour two mugs of hot chocolate to share with Susie.

Both headed to their room, sitting on the floor looking at things -withouth really payin attention to them- on their phones.

“Dude, where did you get that ringtone?? Sounds cool.”

“I bought it? Duhhh, you smartass, think twice before asking!”

The night felt eternal, in a good way.

There were at least eight mugs of hot chocolate scattered on the floor, some spilling onto the rug and others stacked up, as if Susie hadn't tried to make a tower with them even knowing they were glass.

“Dude, what is THAT I see under your stupid brother's bed?” Before Kris could even respond, she was already snooping around what she saw glowing faintly in the light coming through.

Discarded CDs, some hairbands, bracket rubbers... Bingo!

A... black nail polish. With glitter.

“It’s now or never, man.”

With a movement that could have been rough, Susie took Kris’s hand and began to paint their nails. Did she ask permission? No. Did she do it like she was being paid for it? Yes. Was her grip more affectionate than annoying? Well, yes. Susie finished after five minutes and let Kris see her ‘masterpiece.’

“…Niiiiceeeee…”

“I know, right?”

“Yeah. Cool as hell. Imagine if this turned into, like, I dunno, some long and sticky hands in the Dark World.”

“That sounds gross, you dumbass!” A small punch to the shoulder.

“Tch, you seriously say nonsense when you’re sleepy, idiot.”

Kris, already tired and seeing the time—2 a.m.—lay back on the bed, one arm over their forehead and a long yawn in between. “Susie, I’m getting sleeeppppyyy... let’s sleeeeepp.”

“Weak ass, can’t stay up all night? I thought we were used to it but okay! Go to sleep, I’ll probably clean this mess up before your mom arrives and kicks my ass out of your house forever.”

Heh, yeah, go. I’ll wait for you here. I ain't going anywhere.”

“Like hell you would.”

Susie took the dishes to the sink and didn't even bother to wash them, probably thinking “Why should I?????” as she returned to the room, where she only found Kris... curled up in a ball among the sheets.

The image was adorable in her eyes. She couldn't believe they actually SLEEP like that, hah! So... so needy. Or at least that's how they look.

Susie took off her boots and lay against their back, placing her snout right on Kris’s head and wrapping her arms around their body, managing to cover them perfectly. Her grip was firm, pulling them even closer to her, spooning; now with her face hiding in Kris's neck, but her hands resting on their chest.

She could feel their heartbeat, which was so calm; their breath so slow, and their snores barely escaping their lips, as if they were embarrassed to sleep the way they always do.

At one point, Kris went from being the one spooned to being face-to-face, chest-to-chest, with their face hiding in Susie's shoulder out of pure instinct, their limbs intertwining and fitting like puzzle pieces: different, yet together; connected, belonging to one another.

Susie couldn't help but smile and even let out a chuckle at how ridiculous they probably looked right now. “Kris? Looking for me? They must be joking, they're probably gonna dream about me. This all has to be a dream” Susie thought to herself, but as she noticed how their hands moved to her cheek to start stroking it, she realized that maybe… it wasn’t so bad.

“Today was exhausting, wasn’t it? Whether this is a dream or not, I don’t want it to end.” Gently, she pressed three kisses: one on their forehead, another on their cheek, and the last one on their forehead again. For some reason, that specific spot felt too intimate, as if it were only for her. It wasn’t the first time she had kissed them like that, and it felt… good.

“Yeah… get some rest, you deserve it” she murmured more to herself than to Kris, letting the weight on her eyelids win as she too gave in to deep sleep, never letting go of her grip, knowing that the last thing she saw and thought of was them.
