Chapter Text
“Fuck you, Angela! I’m so sick of you treating me like this.” Lucy says, throwing her hands up. They’ve been arguing for the past ten minutes and it’s gotten louder and more angry as they’ve kept going, all the things they haven’t said from the past few weeks surfacing in the most vicious way.
“Oh grow up Lucy, you’re being jealous for no reason.”
“I’m not jealous, I’m tired of being pushed aside and forgotten about. I haven’t been able to spend time with you, or the guys, for weeks. Tim’s too busy with Metro, you’re always with Nyla, and Wesley is too busy with that big case he’s working on. I just want someone to spend time with me.”
“We spend time together every night.”
“No, we all fall into bed, half asleep, and we don’t talk about anything besides how the kids are and maybe some small talk on how the day was.”
“Lucy, you’re overreacting,” Angela says dismissively, rolling her eyes.
“No, I’m trying to keep this relationship functioning!” Lucy yells, her voice cracking with emotion.
“You’re being immature. We can’t always be kinky and sexy and lavishing you with attention, Lucy. Sometimes we have to be adults.” Angela says, turning around to pick up her phone when it dings. Lucy feels like a knife was just stabbed in her chest. She doesn’t always need the kinky sex or to be the center of attention but they’ve all been so busy for weeks that they haven’t spoken about anything substantial. She can’t even remember when the last time the four of them sat down at the same time to eat was.
Lucy watches as Angela types on her phone, no doubt answering a message from Nyla or someone about a case she’s working on. The four of them were supposed to have a date night but Tim had gotten a call about a Metro raid five minutes before he left the building and Wesley had been given eight more boxes of discovery that needed to be gone through before trial the next day. She had driven home alone to find Angela hunched over case notes and when she mentioned going to dinner since the kids were with Patrice, Angela just shrugged and told her that they could order in since she wanted to review some case notes and the guys weren’t going to be home anyways.
As Lucy sees Angela continue to type, she takes in a shuddering breath, unable to deal with the pain in her chest any longer. “No, you know what, I need a break.” Lucy storms past Angela, the older woman barely looking up as she drops onto the couch, pulling a case file into her lap.
Lucy walks into the bedroom and grabs her bag, throwing a couple changes of clothes in there. She looks around and sees the signs of their shared life and her heart twists uncomfortably in her chest. She drops her moonstone ring in Angela’s jewelry tray before reaching into one of the dresser drawers and grabbing one of Angela’s most worn shirts, Tim’s most comfortable hoodie, and a pair of Wesley’s boxers that she usually ended up wearing as shorts around the room. She slips them into her bag and zips it closed, taking a shaky breath before looking at the bed they all slept in, the rumpled sheets, the pillows all strewn about. She sits her bag on the floor and carefully makes the bed, stripping the pillowcases off her pillows before dropping them in a pile at the foot of the bed. Once the bed is made, minus her pillows, she turns back to her bag and grabs the handles, taking a deep breath and walking out of the bedroom, turning the light off as she goes.
When she comes out of the bedroom Angela looks over her shoulder, doing a double take when she sees the bag in Lucy’s hands.
“What the fuck is that?”
“I told you, I need a break.”
“No! No, you don’t get to walk away from us Lucy.”
“I need time, Angela. If you or the guys need me, you can text me, otherwise I’ll see you at work.” Lucy’s voice wavers as she looks past Angela, her eyes fixed on the door. She takes a deep breath and steps around her girlfriend, the tears welling up and threatening to spill over.
“No. Lucy, if you…if you walk out that door, don’t bother coming back.” Angela says to her girlfriend’s back, venom and anger lacing her words, but an undercurrent of pain there. Lucy freezes but doesn’t turn around. “I mean it. If you leave, don’t come back.”
“I’m sorry, Ang.” Lucy says quietly before stepping into her shoes and quietly shutting the front door behind her. “I love you,” Lucy whispers as she stands on the doorstep, refusing to let the first tear fall.
As she takes in a shaky breath, debating on turning around and going back inside, Lucy hears something shatter against the closed door behind her. She makes it to her car before the first tears fall. She pushes the start button on her car through blurry eyes but putting the vehicle into gear becomes impossible.
Lucy leans her forehead on the steering wheel and lets the tears fall, sobs escaping from her mouth. Time doesn’t matter as she sobs, feeling the weight of her decision settle against her shoulders before she lifts her head and shifts the car into the drive. Lucy backs out of the driveway and begins driving, not sure where she’s going but running from her decision.
She goes through the streets of LA, not sure of her destination but knowing she needs to get somewhere and clear her head. Stopping at a red light, Lucy takes a deep breath and grabs a napkin from her console, wiping her eyes and blowing her nose before the light turns green again.
When it turns green, Lucy eases off the brake and begins going, not seeing the car running the red light. The only thing she sees are the headlights in her eyes from the side and she hears the impact. Her last thought is that she didn’t get a final kiss or “I love you” from any of her partners.
