Chapter Text
Katara and Aang got into a fight, a usual thing for sure. But Katara wanted things that a monk was iffy about going along with, so she did something, something stupid, something that Zuko, or Sokka would do, she, in front of Aang, asked Toph out. But why would a member of the Beifong family date a lady of the water tribe, to bait a man of the water tribe to date her, obviously.
Of course, neither of them would say their true intentions, that being to get the other members of their team to date them, even through Sokka already had a love interest, and was secretly dating her, which Toph found out about, because well only aang can move around undetected, and even that’s hard to do, not that he wants to.
There is one other factor that is important to understand what happened is that both of these women had egos equal to the men of their group, and they refused to do anything less than the best they could.
They decided to split up for the day. Aang would go do something, Sokka said that he was going to go do something, everyone could tell he was lying, only Toph knew what he was actually doing.
Sokka made a crucial mistake, he said. “Nothing is going to go wrong.” Yeah, the universe loved proving him wrong, but this time it wasn’t going to be that bad this time.
Aang’s story:
After groping everyone else, Aang headed to a nearby temple to meditate and talk with people who share some, if not all, of his beliefs. He loved his family, but sometimes a little time with like-minded individuals helps to appreciate those who aren’t. On the way, he saw a family with a broken wagon wheel. By the time Appa landed, a group of mercenaries hopped out.
They threw darts at Appa, Aang swiped them away, jumped off Appa, telling him to go. Momo squealed, but he was better off on Appa.
Aang landed with the grace of a swan, redicting darts like that was his skill set, once the ran out of dart one of the guys on aang’s left flank came running in with his sword above his head, aang sled out of the way as the sword came rushing into the dirt, aang spun around his staff kicking the guy in the face, of course the staff was hovering but whatever. The next guy came from Aang’s far right. He got put into a small tornado and then slammed into the other guy on the right. The last two came at the same time. Aang sped between them, getting them to look before using the air to knock their heads into each other to knock them out. With that, Aang had a thought.” God, I like to airbend, sometimes it’s all I want to do.”
After making sure everyone was okay, he called Appa, hopped back on, and had a very entertaining day with the monks, but you won’t be able to comprehend the amazingness of their adventures, your brain would just explode, so I will spare you of that grizzly fate.
Sokka’s story:
After walking for about 20 minutes, he met her at the rendezvous point. They started walking just a bit further to get to a river, and they sat and started eating.
And to no one’s surprise, Suki pulled him into a kiss.
They sat and ate, did some things for about an hour, and as they were laying as naked nickelodeon can get away with, they also had a out folded sleeping bag over them, when a group of angry villagers ambushed them, they grabbed weapons and fought back, Suki twisted someone, kicked the pitch fork of their hands and roundhouse kicked him to knock him out. While Sokka swung his club, the village parried. Sokka dunked under, hitting his head, not killing, but certainly maiming. The next villager swung a stick at Sokka, he sifted out of the way and bonked her on the head, too. Luckily, the villagers were smart and ran away.
“What happened, Suki?”
“Well..”
Suki’s Story:
On the way to meet up with Sokka, She stumbled across a group of villagers, that soke weirdly, As it turns on it was a small Hamlet of people who only spoke an ancient language, she thought she or they were going mad, until she found the elder who did understand her, as it turns out in their community it is offensive to speak the same language as the rest of the world, The elder told her to take a small thing as a keepsake, one of the villagers saw that assumed she was stealing and followed her, they were a bit behind, and stumbled upon them right after they finished their activities.
Lastly(for now), Katara and Toph’s story.
Luckily for their potential love, a group of people who hate the southern water tribe spotted Katara practically seconds after they got off Appa.
Before Katara could even do anything, Toph lifted the ground and flung them literally out of sight.
Katara was shocked, sure she knew Toph was powerful, but god, and all of a sudden, a voice permeated through her head.
“A powerful blender. “ The voice said, she didn’t say Avatar, she didn’t say master of four elements, the fortune teller told her, a powerful bender, and who is more powerful than the earth bender who can bend metal.
She overpowers that voice with her own, “What, no, I’m only to this to get at Aang, but, no, I can’t, but the fortune, she’s crazy, is she is why should I date Aang, I could, why not, I’m going to give her a chance.”
“Hey, Toph.”
“Yeah, Katara.”
“I know we both have ulterior motives, but I’m going to give this a try.”
Now, it was Toph's turn to be shocked first, Aang, then Suki, then the villagers, Sokka, Katara, and now it was Toph's turn. It really went against her stoic warrior, who wants to prove to the whole world that she is tough, that she doesn’t need help, despite what she would tell anyone. Toph honestly thought that this was going to be a glorified girl’s date, but Katara, her, together, what? But if Toph was anything, it was patient, while Katara is going with the flow, as is the way of a waterbender, Toph was going to be patient, lie in wait, see what happens, then act.
“Okay, I will too.”
“That’s great.”
“Okay, where are we going?”
“Dinner first, right?”
“Well, since Aang isn’t here, I thought we could eat at a meat shop.”
“Sounds great.”
“Especially because I’m so tired from fighting those guys off.”
“What guys?”
“The ones you threw into the air.”
Toph let out a small chuckle, “Aang is wrong, the humor does run in the family.”
“Why, thank you, Miss Beifang.”
“No, thank you, miss. I don’t know your last name.”
“I don’t have one.”
“Then how do you keep track of how is related to who, and what status everyone is?”
“We have five igoos, and we’re all raised together.”
“Ohh.”
“Are you ready?”
“Let’s go.”
Toph started walking.
“It’s this way.”
“But your feet.”
“I’m just kidding, you’re going the right way.”
Toph grabbed the rock under Katara and bended Katara to her, Toph locked arms with her and started walking.
“Pass the next crossroad, then right, straight, right.”
“Okayee.”
They walked mostly in silence, Toph staying quiet, because she was internally freaking out, and she needed every ounce of focus to walk, and not freak out at every sweat drop by Katara, Silent and strong. As for Katara, her internal ocean was in a stwaom, what she wouldn’t give to do some waterbending right now, embrace the waves, and that’s what she was going to do, push in with the waves, pull out with them too. The stability of arms and straightness of the walk was one of the only things calming Toph’s rocks, they weren’t shaking about. It wasn’t an earthquake, she was feeling it was vibration, erratic vibrations.
Toph was so dead set on her goal that she completely forgot to listen, and a man bumped into her.
“I’m so sorry, sir, my friend here is blind.”
“You aren’t.”
“So sorry.”
Once they were out of earshot.
“What was that? You are normally so aware unless it’s aang.”
“I didn’t like…I didn’t like you calling me your friend.”
“Are you okay, Toph?”
“Are you? Your heart is going insane, you are a water bender, can’t control your own sweat.”
“Also, if you don’t want me calling you my friend, what do you want?”
Toph mumbled. “Girlfriend would be nice.”
“Huh.”
Toph didn’t raise her voice an octave. “Girlfreind.”
“Toph, please, I can’t hear you.”
Toph screamed so hard the rocks in Katara’s general direction lifted up, and away, almost like she delivered a powerful blast of air. “I want you to call me your girlfriend.”
Katara got slammed against a house on the counter.
A water fountain in the next crossroads shot up like a cannon, then calmed down, just started going everywhere. Katara walked to Toph, who was crunched down, and made an igloo with the water from the fountain.
“You know that’s crazy, right, this soon, here.”
“Katara, for once, will you be crazy with me?”
Katara didn’t know if it was her tone or the with me part, but this time, she wanted to.
“I’m sorry I can’t. It goes against everything I know down to be bending.”
“Katara-”
A man broke through with an ice pick.
“Can you-”
Toph made an earth ten over the igloo.
“Like I was saying, Air and Fire are supposed to be the crazy ones, but I am the most powerful earth bender, and I am… kinda crazy. You ever wonder how?”
“No, I just focus on water.”
“An old friend of mine says that’s a bad idea, but anyway, most earth benders are static, that’s not steady… steady is the ability to stand YOUR position no matter what you’re doing, you have to stand firm, the waterbenders are all about change and flow, right?”
“Yeah.”
“So, maybe change your flow, and change you, sure Air is about freedom, but what is change if not dedicated freedom… if you’re a little more like me, you can be better at being like you… balance right.”
“....... What am I supposed to do, whatever I want, with purpose or cause, detached from the world?”
“Not without purpose, with YOUR purpose, not detached connected, just like rivers spilt but they all come back together, to matter how far, it’s all connected…What’s your purpose, what do you want, little picture, how are you going to get to your destiny?”
“......I want you.”
“Then, get me.” Katara leaned in, and they met like two birds flying into each other, but it didn’t take long for them to get a hold of it. Tilting their head, and tongue wrestling.
Someone pounded on the rock.
“We should probably leave to get food.”
“Is that what you want?”
“yes”
