Chapter 1: The New Girl

Chapter Text

The first thing Jindřiška thought when they arrived to the house they'd be staying in, was "Wow. That's nothing like the movies."

They stood in front of a rather small, old looking house, not much better than the two-family house they've been living in back in Czechoslovakia. Thinking about that, her mind subconciously drifted to the other family, probably still residing there. What did Šebkovi do? Did someone else move in?

As she helped her new younger brother with his bags, as he was too busy cherishing the airplane model her dad had given him to guard, her mind shifted to Elien. Even though at first she was glad to see him, now it became somewhat of a dread, settling in the pit of her stomach. For some reason, the thought of his big blue eyes, of his too wide smile and too cocky demeanor did not stir up anything within her anymore. She shook her head, following her father into the house. The floorboards creaked under her legs as she hauled her luggage into her new room. It was smaller than her old room, but not something she couldn't get used to. She would have to get used to everything, it seemed. It all seemed so different, yet not different at all. The sky was still blue, the floorboards made the same creaking sound that they did at home, the water tasted the same, etcetera.

The first challenge proved to be the school. It was just as chaotic as the rest of the town, if not more.

She managed to push her way through the crowded hallway and instrusive stares towards the classroom she was told to go to by the principal. To her surprise, everyone had small, cramped desks, instead of a double desk she was used to from her old school. After looking around, she chose a spot in the fourth row, just behind a girl with brown, slightly curly hair, who seemed lost in thought.

And of course the peace didn't last for long. As soon as the teacher arrived, she immediately scanned the classroom with her eyes, calling on her to step out and introduce herself. With a sigh, she made her way to the front of the classroom. "I'm Jindřiška Krausová, I'm 16, I moved here from Czechoslovakia." She shrugged, turning to the teacher with a semi-annoyed expression. "Is that enough?"

The teacher raised an eyebrow, seemingly surprised by the attitude, but just nodded and mumbled something under her breath as Jindřiška moved to sit back down. The rest of the lesson was mostly normal, not counting the piercing stares burning through Jindřiška. Some classmates really deserved a scolding about their manners, especially a guy in the back that reminded her a bit too much of Elien.

~~~
After a few more lessons more or less in the same fashion, she fought her way through the crowd to the just-as packed cafeteria, gripping her tray as she looked around, trying to find a spot among the seemingly endless row of tables. That is, until she felt a tap on the shoulder, and turned around to look at the same girl she sat behind in a few of her lesson.
"Hey, you're the new one, right?" The girl said with a smile, continuing after Jindřiška's nod. "I'm Nancy. Do you wanna sit with me? You look quite lost."
"Sure, why not?" Jindřiška shrugged, following the girl to the table, internally groaning when she realised that one of the people at the table was the Elien-looking guy from earlier. Speak of the devil, the guy raised his head, grinning up at Nancy entirely too cockily and shifting immediately to let her sit next to him at the table, looking at Jindřiška with the same cocky grin that he gave Nancy.
"So, you're the new girl?" He asked, digging into his food, which Jindřiška couldn't help but roll her eyes at. "No shit."
The guy's eyebrows shot up to meet his hairline, Nancy swatting his arms from where she sat next to him. "This is Steve." She gestured to him, which seemed to snap him out of his daze.
Jindřiška just nodded, digging into her own food, not hiding the grimace her face formed into at the weird taste of the food she thought she was used to. Somehow, the three, along with a few other people Jindřiška couldn't bother to remember the names of, spent the lunch break mostly talking together, although the endless questions, often dumb ones, fired her way, were getting annoying.
