Chapter Text

The ding of a game menu echoed in his ear as he reached his door, slowing him down from his four mile run. He glanced to the side and the menu opened up.

Companion Grimoire Activated!

You now have 400 Points!

Choices for a new companion are as follows:

Aang- 200

Gojo- 200

Thanos- 1900

Pass, he cringed as the choices went away. He would not be picking any of them. He hadn’t ever watched JJK, Aang was a pacifist which wasn’t really good here, and Thanos was just…no. This world had enough genocidal maniacs in it, it didn’t need another one.

He sighed as he unlocked his door and entered his home, “I’m home,” he called and smiled when he spotted his mother.

“Oh, Nathan,” she smiled at him, “I’m glad you’re home.”

He smiled softly at her. His mother was a stunningly beautiful woman. Her long dark hair similar to his, but he kept his shoulder-length, and icy blue eyes, it wasn’t a misnomer to call her a goddess given mortal form.

            Because technically, she was.

His mother, Selene of the Shadows, used to be a seraph. She had even participated in the great war five hundred years ago. She was one of the three seraphim, along with Gabriel and Uriel, who killed Asmodeus himself while their father fought his son.

The three hundred years between that final battle, the cold war, and the end of the devil’s civil war, she had spent it mourning her father and helping humanity as she could. When she informed him of all of this on his fifth birthday, he was gobsmacked. He’d thought he had been reborn on a regular Earth with his memories intact, but apparently he’d been reborn in DxD.

He knew that before, obviously. Other things had tipped him off…

“I am too,” he smiled at her as she led him into the kitchen where he received his first surprise of the day.

“Hello son,” Ajuka Beelzebub greeted him with a small smile.

Yeah, his father was that Ajuka. One of the three super devils. Apparently, during one of his mother’s forays onto Earth, she had a run in with said Satan fighting off a group of vampires that were trying to attack a small village about two hundred years ago.

He wiped them out and then proceeded to heal the humans, surprising Selene, who watched him over the next two days living with the villagers and assisting them. He taught several of them magic and contracted them as his magicians.

Some of them were still alive today and doing good work, teaching the next generation of magicians.

When his mother confronted him, he had been surprised to see her and merely stated that he just wanted to set up contacts in the human world and stumbled upon the village under attack. The people treated him kindly after he defended it, so he decided to help them out on a whim.

His mother had been so surprised that she had flown off.

The two of them ran into each other several times over the years, both keeping an eye on the village. Him, because it was his ‘pet project’ (and he liked the villagers) and her, because she wanted to make sure nothing untoward was happening (and she found him interesting).

They started sharing greetings whenever they ran into each other over the next decade, then shared meals together, until an off-the-cuff comment from his father caught his mother off guard.

“You are probably more beautiful than any woman I have ever met before, and I have met quite a few,” he told her when she mentioned her sister, Gabriel, was annoyed that she was even in a poll for that with Aphrodite, Penemue, and Serafall.

Said Satan had started it, expecting to win, but pouted for weeks when she was fifth.

She had bolted the moment the words left his lips and didn’t see him again for a decade. Not until word came to Heaven that Sirzechs Lucifer and Ajuka Beelzebub had a run-in with a White Dragon Emperor who watched the Red Emperor kill his entire family before going into Juggernaut Drive and created the Hudson Bay in Canada.

The two had been called by the last Native American goddess before she was killed by the rampaging dragon as their pantheon tried to contain him. Sirzechs’ wife Grayfia was friends with her and the duo had rushed to save her but were too late.

The two had then fought and defeated the monster but were both severely injured, Ajuka more than Sirzechs because the latter had to go into his True Form to defeat the powerful Emperor.

Selene didn’t even wait for the report to finish before she teleported to Canada and flew to the new bay. She soon spotted Sirzechs’ peerage and Ajuka’s youngest sister, Latia as she berated the Satan while healing him as he began using his Formula to cast a spell to change the memories of all mortals to believe the bay had always been there.

She shot through their defensive line and wrapped her arms around the devil, “You absolute reckless idiot!” she shouted, surprising everyone but Sirzechs who just chuckled as Ajuka looked baffled by the turn of events.

“Leave them be!” Sirzechs called out and Selene realized she had been targeted by dozens of spells and weapons but didn’t care.

“Brother?” Latia’s narrowed gaze stared at the Seraph hugging the Satan.

“It’s fine,” he said softly and his had cupped the back of her head while the other wrapped around her, “She’s a friend.”

The two had spoken for a time. He had apologized for his comment the last time they saw one another, and she apologized for running off. His mother had done some soul-searching in the decade between their meetings and found that she had left because she had realized she was falling in love with the highly intelligent Satan.

She told him as much, and the man had smiled wider than anyone had ever seen before and Sirzechs was so stunned that he stared at his best friend for a full minute.

The two had continued to meet in secret with help from Sirzechs and Grayfia. It wasn’t until their relationship progressed to the point Ajuka asked her to marry him that she had to make a choice.

She told Nathan that she had prayed to her dead father, hoping for guidance but not expecting any, when she received a feeling, a hint, that he just wanted her happy.

So, she had given up her Grace, becoming a powerful ‘exorcist’ after she gave up her wings, and the two were married in secret. Zekram Bael was the one to preside over the marriage, surprisingly.

He wasn’t a dick in this universe, he just wanted Devilkind to prosper.

And what better way than putting Seraph blood into their race?

He found it odd, but he wasn’t going to look a gift horse in the mouth. Besides him, only Sirzechs and Grayfia knew of the marriage, which was why his father wasn’t around much.

But that didn’t mean his father loved him any less.

“Hey dad,” he smiled and was pulled in for a hug.

“I’m sorry I missed your eighteenth birthday last week,” he said sadly, “Did you get my gift?”

Nathan waved him off, “I know it’s hard to get up here to visit with so many eyes on you,” he sighed, but he did smile, “I did get it. Thank you for the blade. It channels my magic through it very well.”

“Good,” he nodded, “You will need it.”

He pulled the blade out of his pocket space, a greatsword that looked like Frostmourne, made to the specifications he gave his father. Though, it glowed purple instead of blue since he’d always had a fascination with Revan and orange was too close to Naruto for his liking. Those being the two colors of Revan’s sabers.

“Why will I need it, dad?” he asked with a frown as his mother sat next to his father.

They held hands and he couldn’t help the small smile. Even after a century together, they were still very much in love. Hells, his mother gave up her power in Heaven to be with him.

Selene Smith was a good doctor in small town Forks, Washington, and no, it wasn’t Twilight, thank Grandfather. None of the cast was in the town, not even the humans.

Nathan did not want to deal with broody vampires or obsessive irritating wolves. Though, it would have been nice to see Rosalie, Alice, Jasper, and Emmett in person.

The Denali sisters too, for…scientific purposes.

He snapped out of his thoughts when his father spoke again, “Someone is watching you and your mother,” he told him gently and Nathan’s eyes widened, “Which is why you and your mother are moving to Kuoh, Japan after you receive your Evil Pieces.”

His mother huffed an amused laugh, “You really were having an off day when you named them, weren’t you, love?” she asked in amusement.

“Isn’t that where Uncle Sirzechs’ sister is with Sona Sitri?” he asked with a raised brow.

His father nodded, “It is, which is why you are coming out of the woodwork as a distant half-devil cousin. You ‘took’ the high-class devil exam and that is why you are getting your pieces now.”

Did he really want to go to the town where the plot of DxD happened?

“Who is watching me?” he asked with a frown.

“We don’t know,” his mother told him, “but we are sure they are wondering why such a powerful half-devil is living in the middle of nowhere with an exorcist masquerading as a doctor.”

He did feel like he had been being watched, but assumed it was his mother since he had been with his friend, Gwen Stacy and, once again, no, not that Gwen Stacy.

She was dark-haired and short and curvy, but her father had never been a cop, and her mother had died birthing her. She didn’t show any superhuman abilities and there was no Marvel in this world outside of any characters he may summon.

She only came up to his chest. He may have his father’s build, all lithe muscle, but he was tall. He hadn’t slacked off in his training. His mother had been ultimate class when she gave up her Grace, but his father was a super devil, essentially a nuclear deterrent.

Ajuka Beelzebub used his incredible intellect and experience to make sure to train his son to be a powerful devil. It was why he was at the bottom of ultimate at just eighteen.

Anyway, his friend Gwen had been acting oddly around him recently, blushing and stuttering. He was confused, because he wasn’t an idiot anime protagonist. He knew what those signs were, she hadn’t shown any signs of interest in him before, but in the last few weeks she had.

Subtle flirting, blushing when complimented, more affectionate, kissing his cheek closer to his mouth than friendly.

Now, don’t get him wrong, he adored her, she was his best friend, had been since they were kids, but she wasn’t ready for the supernatural world. She didn’t have a sacred gear, didn’t have any magical potential awoken in her, nothing. It didn’t matter how hard he shoved down how much he loved her, she couldn’t handle anything supernatural yet.

But he was still going to offer her one of his pieces.

Why? Because she has never once lied to him, never once taken his friendship for granted, and has shown, with word and deed, that she was his best friend.

She also reminded him a lot of his sister, his best friend, from his previous life.

Also, the fact that he…loved her.

She even had his parents’ approval. His mother adored her and his father found her highly intelligent.

“Are we in danger?” he asked, “Is Gwen? I know she’s been living with her aunt since her dad passed last year, but she’s always in my company.”

“Gwen can take care of herself,” his mother said gently and turned, “Come in, dear.”

Nathan’s jaw dropped when Gwen came in with two daggers on her hips and a worried look in her green eyes. She reached to her wrist and pulled her bracelet off to reveal a pair of rabbit ears on her head.

“Gwen, what?” he stared in confusion.

“I discovered she was a yokai after our first meeting and spoke with her father,” his mother smiled, “He told me that after his wife died, they moved here to escape the memories. She had no idea who you were until last week when we told her who we are,” she chuckled, “She and her father were out of the loop with the supernatural world even before they moved here so they had no idea who Ajuka was.”

“It was refreshing,” Ajuka sighed happily and Nathan agreed with him. He didn’t really like being feared by people. He just wanted to invent, love his family, and spend time with his friends.

But because he was so strong, he needed to be one of the four pillars to keep the underworld protected.

“I’m sorry I lied to you,” she said softly, “but until last week I thought you were just a mundane human with an exorcist for a mother,” her green eyes had tears in them as she glanced at his mother who smiled encouragingly at her, “They told me the plan and I decided to go with you, if- if you’ll still have me.”

A million thoughts went through his head when she admitted that. He had been so locked onto the fact her name was Gwen Stacy, but she wasn’t Ghost Spider, that he didn’t even contemplate her being part of the supernatural, though.

That was why he always kept her at arm’s length. He didn’t want to get her involved with the supernatural until he could protect or reincarnate her.

But she had been able to defend herself this entire time.

“Why?” he asked and she looked at him in confusion, “Why do you want to come with me?”

“Excuse us,” his mother smiled at him serenely with a knowing glint as she grabbed her husband’s arm, “We have some calls to make, take your time,” she sent the rabbit a look that caused her ears to stiffen and a blush to take over her face.

The two of them stared at each other for a few moments before Gwen sighed, “What’s wrong Gwen?” he asked, “I’m not…that upset you hid this from me,” he was, but he knew, logically, both of them thought the other was just a mundane human. He would get over it, hells, he was probably already over it he just hadn’t had time to process, “I…was actually going to ask you if you wanted to be reincarnated into my peerage when I received my pieces.”

“Really?” she asked and the way she lit up caused his heart to clench.

“You’re my best friend, Gwen,” he said softly, even if, now that he knew she was a part of the supernatural, feelings he had been suppressing for years were bubbling up, “Call me selfish, but I want to keep you around.”

“Oh,” she slumped a bit but a noise behind her where his parents exited made her rally and stiffen her spine, “Well, I accept,” she smiled, “I think a Knight would be best for me, but we can talk about that later. Anyway,” she took another breath, “there is a big reason your mother offered this to me,” she said softly.

“She’s known I’ve been in love with you for the last four years,” she said softly and he froze, his blue eyes widened.

            “You have?” he said lowly.

She smiled at him, it was brittle, and scared, but she was determined. It was one of her best qualities: her courage in the face of fear, “I remember when I realized it. It was on your birthday, our fathers were making stupid jokes and embarrassing us while we were at that restaurant. One of the seniors at a nearby table asked why such an ugly duckling was sitting next to a hottie like your mom,” she smiled softly and the air felt like it was punched out of him at the sheer adoration that filled her gaze when she looked at him.

“And I told him that you were more beautiful than my mother by a landslide,” he finished and her smile widened. That was honestly when he realized his feelings for her too and he just shot off at the mouth to defend her, “My mom pouted for weeks after that.”

“You didn’t notice it, but she looked right at me and smirked,” Gwen chuckled, “She knew then that I was done for, and that was when she offered to train me, admitting she was an exorcist and that she knew I was a yokai,” she smiled wryly, “It was the next morning. She offered to teach my father but he was just a regular human. My mother was the yokai, but he approved letting me train after a private conversation between the two of them.”

“I’ve loved you almost as long,” he told her and he adored the way her green eyes lit up, “That day, I had come to the same realization,” he laughed lightly, “I was trying to work through my feelings that entire day and when that dipshit said that to you, I just spoke without thinking. The teasing I received for it was legendary. I’m pretty sure my parents have a magical recording of that day somewhere,” he glanced at the door and shattered the listening spell.

Both of them heard a yelp and shook their heads. Of course his mother would listen in. She had a vested interest in this relationship it would seem. He looked into the loving green eyes of his best friend and stepped closer, taking her hand, “I still love you, Gwen Stacy,” he smiled at her and received a teary one back, “When this mess is over, do you want to go on a date with me?”

She laughed and it sounded like the sweetest music, then his brain blue-screened.

Because she kissed him, and it wasn’t a chaste kiss.

Companion Grimoire Acti- Not now! He shouted in his mind. He was too busy reciprocating the kiss.

He felt amazing. It wasn’t his first kiss, but it was the best one by far. The two of them slowed down though, and he realized in the heat of the moment, that he had lifted her up and she wrapped her legs around him.

Both of them began blushing and he slowly let her down, adjusting his pants since he had just had a beautiful girl with her legs wrapped around him, “Yes, in case the kiss didn’t prove it.”

“Good,” he chuckled and waved his hand at the door, allowing both his parents to spill onto the floor, “Hear all that?” he asked amusedly while his Gwen blushed but smiled at the wide grin on Selene’s face.

“Of course!” she hopped up with his father. He knew they both wouldn’t have fallen if they didn’t want to, but they did it for the comedic value. Sometimes, he wondered how his parents, a Seraph and a Satan, could be so childish at times, but then he remembered what they’d had to do during the war, and cut them some slack. “So, are you two ready?”

“We already packed you up while the two of you talked,” his father smiled at him.

He looked at Amara who pulled a chain out of her shirt to reveal two shrunken bags, “I have everything. My aunt told me to have fun on my trip, but I doubt I will speak to her again after this,” she scowled.

He pulled her into a hug and she just wrapped her arms around him as he comforted her. He knew that her aunt was a bitch, upset over something Gwen’s father did in their teen years still and she was petty about it.

She didn’t abuse Gwen, but she didn’t treat her well.

“Let’s go,” he looked over at his mother’s soft tone and saw both his parents smiling at the two of them. He nodded at his mother mouthing ‘thank you’ and she lit up.

There were a lot of reasons for thanking his mother, the least of which was for helping his best friend. He would do everything in his power to make it up to her.
