Work Text:
"And that's the end of the chapter, Evy. It's time to sleep now, you promised," says Jonathan as he closes the book, keeping his thumb inside to mark their place.
"But I want to know what happens next!" Evy wiggles in the bed, sounding much too awake. "It's the summer hols, can't we stay up for one more chapter? I want to know if Silver gets the map."
"We can find out tomorrow." Jonathan leans back, curling an arm around Evy's narrow shoulders and tucking her in closer. "Mum and Dad will be back soon, you'll get me in trouble if they see you're still awake."
He closes his eyes and pretends to yawn, "Besides I'm tired."
A pointy elbow pokes at him. "No you're not!"
"Yes I am!"
"No you're not!" Ugh. Little sisters are so annoying sometimes. Jonathan tries to think of a distraction, because last time they'd been caught arguing like this Dad had grounded him from playing cricket with his mates for a whole day. So unfair.
"Do you think the treasure's actually gonna be buried gold?" He asks.
"I guess so..." Evy thinks for a bit, and Jonathan feels heavier in the quiet. "If he stole a buncha stuff though, maybe there's lots of rich people things, too. Fancy necklaces and sarcophagi and hes-vases and expensive books."
"Mmmnah, only Dad cares that much about Egyptian pottery. And books would get all mouldy and gross, you weirdo."
"One day I'll find a treasure map," Evy declares, and Jonathan mutters, "Sure you will," in response, eyelids drooping. He was lying to her earlier but he's actually pretty sleepy now.
"And you'll come help me find the treasure?"
Jonathan raises his hand to pat Evy's hair without looking, fingers accidentally catching on her ear the first time. "Sure thing, Evy."
"We'll find it together."
