Chapter Text

Konoha was in the midst of a war between the Five Great Shinobi nations. Minato, Kakashi, Rin, Obito, and I, were set to demolish the Kannabi bridge. I walk up to them with Obito, “Sorry if we’re a bit late,” I breathe heavily from running here.

“Anytime you aren’t on time it’s always because you helped someone-”

Obito cuts Kakashi off, “Come on it was just a few times,” he whines.

“I almost forgot, Kakashi, here's your present. Congrats on becoming a Jōnin today.” I smile while giving him the gift.

We all give Kakashi his gifts. He doesn’t say much about them, just giving us a muttered “thank you”. That’s just him being his usual cold self. Once he opens the gift from me he looks annoyed. Inside the box is a few shuriken.

“Thanks I guess,” he mumbles.

The team wanders deeper into Kusa. Kakashi attempted to kill Mahiru using his new learned jutsu, chidori. I ran after him with Minato.

“He’s gonna get himself killed out there.” I whisper under my breath.

“You sure do care about him, don’t you?” Minato questioned.

I look over at Minato. He has that look in his eyes. That same look when I know he’s going to tease me about him. But why at a time like this?

“Now is not the time.”  I replied.

Minato saves Kakashi from Mahiru. Eventually Minato kills Mahiru. Minato watches over the team as I prepare to clean Kakashi’s wounds.

“I’m fine,” Kakashi insists.

I ignore him before going back to clean his wounds. The cut on his arm is serious and he’s losing quite a bit of blood. Kakashi shivers under me as I continue to clean him. He grabs my thigh, a random habit of his when I treat his injuries.

“Would you quit doing that?!” I snap at him before he moves his hand off my thigh.

Later that night I come back from fighting shinobi only to find everyone gone. I rush to find them and when I do I see Obito under rocks. Rin is with Obito and Kakashi is bandaging his eye.

I sprint over to Obito, “Please, no…not like this.” I plead, tears run down my face and drip onto his hand. Kakashi tries to move the boulder that fell on Obito but it’s no use.

“I won’t make it,”Obito said softly. He turns to Kakashi, “You know how I was the only one who didn’t get you a gift…I didn’t know what to give you.” He points to his visible eye, “I’ll give you my Sharingan.”

Rin completes the transplant, giving Obito’s Sharingan to Kakashi. “Kakashi, please take care of Rin”. Obito’s voice is hushed. I grip Obito’s hand tighter. “Go now Rin and y/n!” Kakashi pulls both Rin and I up as rocks crumble and pile up, quickly covering Obito.

Kakashi uses chidori to fight the opposing shinobi. Minato soon saves us then deals with the enemies. Kakashi wakes up next to me and Minato.

“Sorry we couldn’t save Obito in time,” I whisper to him.

Kakashi doesn’t answer, he just stares off into the distance.

Months have passed since Obito’s and Rin’s death. Kakashi isn’t doing so well. Occasionally he’ll let me stay over at his apartment. At night he has nightmares, which have woken me up multiple times throughout my stay.

I look to my side, only to see Kakashi washing his hands.

“It won’t come off,” he says, trying not to cry.

I place a hand on his shoulder. “It’s gonna be alright,” my words are spoken in a soft tone, an attempt to comfort him.

Later that day Guy, Kurenai, Asuma, and I are eating with each other. Kakashi walks by us, everyone greets him, expecting him to join them.

“Sorry about him…he’s just been a little down lately,” I sigh.

“It’s about what happened with Rin and Obito,” Kurenai adds.

“He’s suffering with suicidal thoughts.” I look down before speaking again. “He's so reckless when fighting now.”

Almost a year later: the nine tails attack

“Damnit, it’s nine tails! Let's go fight it,” Guy yelled.

People start to evacuate the village. Minato comes in and uses a transportation barrier, the jutsu that deflects the nine tails attacks. From afar I watch as the nine tails pierces through Minato and Kushina. Kakashi lets me cry in his arms as I hear their last words.

“Naruto, don’t be a picky eater. Bathe everyday. Make friends. Don’t drink alcohol until 20. Also…no women. It’s okay if you notice them at some point just be careful. There’s so much more I want to tell you.” Kushina sobs.

At the funeral for all the lives lost during the attack Kakashi and I get flowers to place on the graves. The both of us now have many graves of loved ones to visit, our parents and friends we’ve lost. I hold baby Naruto in my arms.

Kakashi stands silently, staring at the tomb stone of our teammates. It’s silent, besides for the wind. He looks over at me holding Naruto in my arms.

“He looks just like Minato and Kushina,” I comment.

He doesn’t respond for a bit, he eventually speaks up, “Yeah, he really does.”

“I do hope people take good care of him,” I turn to him and smile.

“I doubt it.” Kakashi frowns. “The village sees him as a monster and they view him as the container of the nine tails. He’ll grow up hated and isolated.”

“You don’t hate him, right?” I questioned. “I know I don’t.”

“No, I don’t. I don’t hold anything against him for what the nine tailed fox did. He’s innocent, he didn’t ask to have the beast sealed inside of himI couldn’t hate him even if I wanted to,” he answered.

“If no one loves him yet we just gotta get more people to love him,” I sound a bit cheerful, despite everything.

Kakashi smiles under his mask. He can’t help but blush a little at how cute I am to him. “Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. The villagers have deep hatred for the nine tails, and by extension, Naruto. It’s not going to be easy convincing them to suddenly love the kid.”

“Well uh…” I try to think of an answer, “Jiraiya doesn’t hate him. He is Naruto’s godfather afterall but I doubt he’ll take care of Naruto since he’s usually out of the village.”

Kakashi nods, sighing softly, “Naruto’s going to need more than the occasional visit from Jiraiya.”
