Work Text:

He shouldn’t have proposed a field trip to Nedzu.

Hell, he shouldn’t have even considered a field trip.

He has been on this bus for three minutes—three minutes and forty one seconds to be exact—and he already has an incredible amount of regrets.

The plan for the trip itself is a rather tame one, all things considered, but his students are nothing but tame.

Quite frankly, they’re feral, and Shouta should have never applied to be a teacher in the first place.

FISH

Hitoshi has never been on a field trip. Between his mother’s incredible worry about his safety, and his father’s inability to remember to sign permission slips, he’s always sat behind in the empty classroom.

He’s never really minded, to be honest.

He’s never understood the appeal of a loud bus, hyperactive children, and a subpar guided tour of a museum.

When this trip had been announced, he hadn’t been particularly excited about it, but he wasn’t opposed to it either.

Then the trip became mandatory.

Between his mother’s fretting over his slightly too small shoes and his father’s incessant jokes, he’s already a bit tired.

And now, he’s stuck on a bus with his class: a fact that makes him regret ever being transferred to 1-A.

“You’ve really never been on a field trip, man?” Kaminari asks in disbelief, because he’s apparently become some sort of spectacle for reading in a classroom when his prior classmates would be at a national park.

“No,” Hitoshi replies.

“Have you ever gone outside, like, ever in school?” Ashido interrupts.

“I ate lunch outside when it was warm enough.” Hitoshi shrugs, beginning to get somewhat irritated with all the attention on him. He really wants to just rest his head against the window and listen to some music. Maybe even rest his eyes for a bit.

“Damn, dude, you really are like a monk.”

After Kaminari’s astute revelation, the topic shifts to Asui explaining the impressive filter system of early aquariums.

Hitoshi has no idea how he’s going to last another hour on this bus.

FISH

Aside from the U.S.J. and the training camp, Izuku has never really been on a field trip.

He also hasn’t exactly had the best record with the two he has been on, hence his worry.

Danger Sense is quiet against his skull, and has been for the past week, but he still isn’t certain about their survival.

But it’s an innocent school trip to navigate interactions with the general public, so it can’t be too disastrous.

FISH

made it to the aquarium intact somehow

the students are acting like they’ve never seen a fish in their lives

we haven’t even went through the entrance

if i ever let them outside again, you’re chaperoning that field trip

11:36

Hizashi snorts at the string of messages.

“That bad already?” Snipe asks, amusement clear in his voice.

“They haven’t even entered the building, and Shou’s considering never bringing them outside again,” Hizashi says as he sends back a laughing emoji.

“Just give them some time, they’ll be fine.”

FISH

Shouta is supposed to be chaperoning, yet the moment Gang Orca told them to feel free to explore, his entire class scattered.

He saw Hagakure excitedly drag Ojirou towards the dolphins, and he’s assuming they’ll be there the whole entire time.

As for everyone else, he has a vague idea of where they are, just to be sure.

“They seem to be having a good time already,” Sakamata comments, nodding down the main hallway.

“You should’ve seen how excited they were the whole way here. I haven’t seen them smile like that in a while,” Shouta admits.

“Let them have their fun, they deserve it.”

FISH

“Holy shit, that’s a huge jellyfish,” Kyouka remarks, pointing at a particularly round jellyfish lazily swimming around.

“That thing could’ve probably eaten Mineta,” Momo replies, almost sheepishly.

Kyouka laughs herself to the brink of tears at the mental image of their former classmate being constricted by the gummy creature.

FISH

“That turtle is the manliest turtle I’ve ever seen,” Eijirou whispers in awe, his face pressed against the glass.

“Oh that’s Kimiko, we just got her last week!” A worker explains with a smile.

“I would die for Kimiko,” Eijirou replies in complete and utter honesty, his gaze fixated on the reptile.

On the other side of the glass, the hand-sized turtle is happily munching on her lettuce.

FISH

“They’re so cool,” Izuku breathes from where he stands in front of the shark tank.

“They are pretty cool,” Shinsou concedes, hands still resting in the pockets of his jacket.

“Um, excuse me? I can’t find my dad,” a small voice says from Izuku’s side.

Izuku immediately snaps his attention away from the sharks, kneeling in front of the young girl.

Her bright cyan hair is tied into two intricate buns, and her entirely white eyes are teary.

At oldest, she’s maybe seven years old.

“That’s okay, I’m here to help. When did you last see him?” Izuku asks, his voice calm and kind.

“I don’t know. We- we were near the turtles,” she says, choking on tears.

Izuku shares a quick glance with Shinsou.

From their position, the turtle exhibit was on the other side of the building.

“Alright, sweetie, let’s go look for him, okay? Do you want to hold my hand?”

The girl nods, immediately taking the offered hand.

Izuku rises to his feet, ready to begin the search.

FISH

As his students begin to congregate in the lobby once more, Shouta mentally counts all of them.

When he falls short by five, he doesn’t immediately panic, but he certainly gets a bit nervous.

As Ashido and Kaminari hurriedly sprint over with Bakugou walking behind them, his phone vibrates in his pocket.

With only Shinsou and Midoriya unaccounted for, Shouta takes out his phone with no small amount of dread.

We’re fine, lost kid came up to Midoriya, we’re looking for her dad now. Please don’t leave without us.

13:58

Absolute problem children, both of them.

He replies with an affirmative statement, then proceeds to take a breath.

At least they’re okay.

FISH

After a tearful reunion between a grateful young father and his daughter, Izuku checks his phone for the time and double-takes.

“The bus was supposed to leave eight minutes ago,” Izuku whispers to Shinsou in panic, who shrugs in response.

“I texted Aizawa-sensei ten minutes ago, everyone’s waiting on the bus for us. He’s still in the lobby.”

Izuku could cry out of sheer gratitude for his classmate’s amazing communication.

“Thank you,” he says, immediately wrapping Shinsou into a tight hug. After a tense pause, Shinsou cautiously reciprocates.

“We may want to hurry up though, considering the lobby is all the way over there.”

FISH

hizashi

hizashi i have been given eight souvenirs from the spawn

todoroki got a sticker sheet of manatees with puns

kirishima is wearing a sweater covered in turtles

i don’t think i saw a single student until it was time to leave

14:12

In his now empty classroom, Hizashi smiles at the update.

If Shouta asked him to, he would happily chaperone the next field trip.

Class 2-A deserved every field trip, then more.

I wrote this in two (2) hours with no music or literacy. Hope you enjoyed it!
