It's Late

Summary:

"Hey," David mutters, tilting his head against hers in lieu of a kiss as he turns back to the screen. "I know it's late, I'm sorry, I'm almost done with this one."

"It's very late. You should come to bed."

He sighs. "I know."

"And we miss you." She hooks her chin over his shoulder and hugs him tighter, tilting the editing chair back. "Especially Clark. Clark misses you a lot."

Notes:

Hello. Before we get started: I am not trying to say that any of what you're about to read here is real or factual or true in any way. I do not know these people. However, if YOU do, then please turn back now and do not read this. That will just bring pain to both of us. If you don't know anyone in this fic, then please do me the favor of keeping this on the down-low and doing your best to keep the Sellsword Arts team blissfully unaware that this ever existed. Just be normal about this that's all I ask. I KNOW people have already told them about this but still guys holy shit please. Rule 1 of RPF is We Don't Talk About RPF for a REASON

also protip for other people writing in this tag (or any new tag): if you don't know someone's last name, you put the name of the fandom in parentheses after their first (see: Megan (Sellsword Arts)) (David also has this because there are apparently like 7 other David Millers on ao3) until the character tags are canonized. With Clark and David though, I was able to find them on HEMA rankings.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

David nearly starts when arms wrap around him from behind. He slides off one ear of his headphones and turns — Megan. The tension eases out of him as he smiles.

"Hey," he mutters, tilting his head against hers in lieu of a kiss as he turns back to the screen.

"Clark always misses me." He clicks around, adding in the next effect. He really is almost done, and if he doesn't finish this video now, he knows he'll never get around to putting the finishing details on it. "That's on him for not staying over every night, not me."

"I have to… Moe!" comes a grumble from above them. Megan giggles into his shoulder. "Don't… besmirch his good name like that."

"Right, right." David rolls his eyes, but he's still smiling. "Sorry, Moe."

"Say th- th- it to his face!" Clark's stutter comes through, the man clearly too tired to fight it much. "It'ss… your fault for working when you're ssu…" A sigh of defeat. "Fuck, you know. Cuddle me! Daaavid!" The last part comes out as more of a whine. David ducks his head to bite down his fond smile.

"You heard the man," Megan says. "Cuddle him. He's been whining for you the past hour."

David scoffs, raises an eyebrow back to her. "Has he, now? I didn't hear him."

"David!"

Megan gestures up towards the sound, proving her point.

"And why couldn't he come down himself?"

"You know what he's like."

"I do," David sighs, and he does. That man refuses to leave a bed once he's in it, preferring to beg the others for what he wants instead of up and doing it himself. He's a bit of a pillow princess in that sense. David smirks at the thought.

Ah, fuck it. Megan has a point, and so does Clark, probably. And truth be told, he misses them too. He saves the file, putting his hands up in defeat as he spins around to face her.

"Fine!" he says. He's trying to sound frustrated, but his smile campaigns against him. "Fine, fine, I'll get ready for bed. Happy now?"

Megan nods, grinning, and Clark lets out a triumphant "Yippee!" from above. David laughs and shakes his head — he can't believe he loves these two idiots so damn much. He gives Megan a kiss as he stands, drinking in the feeling of her warmth in his arms.

So damn much.

Megan slips out of his grasp quickly, though, ducking under his arm to sit in the editing chair herself. "I'm closing the program before you sneak back to edit again," she says with a pointed look back.

"What, do you really think I'd do that? Go back to work after I clearly said I'd stop?"

"Yes," is the emphatic answer, from both Megan and Clark. David just laughs again.

"You know what? That's fair." He pulls out the tie of his braid as he walks out of the editing nook. "I'll be up in a minute, Clark!"

David's bedtime routine is a series of practiced motions that he's easily able to run through even in the midnight dark of the studio. Megan stands guard by the editing nook (a valiant display that David fondly rolls his eyes at) while David patters around the bathroom and kitchen. He gets his shirt off, gets his hair in its bonnet, grabs his earplugs and mouth guard. He sweeps Megan into a dip and a kiss when he comes back, making her giggle and look up at him lovingly.

"Stop being cheesy without me!" Clark shouts down. "I c-can hear you, you know!"

"Yeah, yeah," David shoots back. He's still grinning as he starts up the stairs, Megan trailing after. "Your cheesiness is coming, babe, don't worry."

Clark lets out a giggle and another "yay" at that. David reaches the top just in time to see Clark put down the arm he raised in victory.

When David finally gets to the bed, he raises his eyebrows at the mess of sheets and unrepentant Clark below him. "How am I supposed to cuddle you when you're taking up the whole bed?"

Clark gasps up at him, grinning. "David!" He scoots back obediently, but not much before he reaches up and makes grabby hands. "David David David."

"I've been right below you the whole time, you goober," David says fondly. He fits his mouth guard and one of his ear plugs in. "Come 'ere."

Clark cheers again as David climbs into bed, continuing even as the sound is muffled by Clark hugging him tight and stuffing his face into David's chest.

"There, there," David soothes, petting Clark's hair and glancing back at Megan with a can you believe this guy? sort of look.

Megan nudges the mattress with her foot. "Scoot scoot scoot, I don't have room either."

Once again, Clark scoots back, this time pulling David along with him so they're never separated too far. Clark is warm and familiar in his arms, firmer than Megan but still soft in the skin-on-skin contact of their chests. He can feel their hearts start to beat in time.

Megan pulls up the blanket and crawls into bed behind David, wrapping her arms around him and kissing his neck as she finally settles. In front of him, Clark burrows deeper into his arms, fully relaxing now that everyone's situated. David runs his fingers though Clark's hair, and Clark sighs, content.

Fuck. So damn much. He's nearly breathless.

"Goodnight," Megan whispers. It's just barely audible through his earplugs. Clark mutters something back that maybe could have been a "goodnight," but mostly sounds like a mess of syllables through David's chest. David snorts out a soft, fond laugh.

"Goodnight," David says. He kisses the top of Clark's head (Clark lets out a happy noise in response) and leans back to press against Megan in turn. "Love you guys."

Two sets of arms tighten around him, and he sleeps.

Notes:

I hope people enjoy! I have many more sellsword art fics in my head and I hope to write them soon, especially now that I'm done applying for grad school. I just wanted to get this one out as soon as possible to help bulk up the tag & hopefully do some things to help tag wranglers to start canonizing things. Please let me know what you think!
