Checkmate (Falsettos OneShot)

Summary:

Basically "The Chess Game" from Falsettos but with a happier ending.

Notes:

lowkey started writing as a joke to cope with the ending of Falsettos, but I got hyperfixated.

Work Text:

Whizzer could feel Marvin’s burning gaze as his hands hovered across the chess board, fingers twitching between a knight and a bishop.

“Move a pawn,” Marvin finally said.

Whizzer rolled his eyes. Looking up from the board to see Marvin, leaned back in his chair, steepling his fingers.

“I can think for myself.” Whizzer said, eyes narrowing, Though the edge in his voice made it clear he was tired of Marvin’s constant need to direct everything.

Then, ever so slightly, Whizzer smirked. That hit Marvin like a shove. That look was all Whizzer needed to shatter Marvin’s carefully practiced confidence. Whizzer always did that smug expression and suddenly Marvin wasn’t the one in control anymore.

Marvin was tugging at his tie in an unsuccessful attempt to get rid of the lump in throat. Whizzer always seemed to know exactly how to get under his skin. He hated that Whizzer could read him so easily, hated that one look was enough to knock the air from his lungs.

Whizzer noticed, of course he did.

He gazed at Marvin’s hand, then back to his face. He began leaning in slightly, just enough to make Marvin shudder. Before reaching out, brushing his fingers across Marvin’s neck, then slipped beneath the collar of his shirt. The feeling of Whizzer’s hands took Marvin out of his thoughts entirely. Marvin sucked in a breath, shoulders going stiff. Whizzer caught the silk of Marvin’s tie between each of his fingers and toyed with it, rolling the fabric slowly.

Marvin couldn’t speak. He barely breathed.

In a swift motion Whizzer tugged Marvin’s tie. Marvin stumbled forward, the momentum causing him to faceplant straight into Whizzer’s chest. Heat rushed into Marvin’s face as he buried it in the folds of Whizzer’s shirt, hands clutching his hands against his hips.

Marvin cleared his throat and gently pressed a hand to Whizzer’s chest, enough to put a sliver of space between them. He straightened his tie again, slower this time, regaining his composure.

“You’re impossible,” Whizzer said fondly, amusement evident in his tone. Marvin glanced at the chess board, then up at Whizzer. Marvin’s mouth shifted into a condescending smile despite his current predicament.

“Distracting me on purpose, that’s hardly a strategy.”

Whizzer grinned. “It’s working, isn’t it?”

Marvin huffed with a quiet laugh, shaking his head. “You’re still stalling,” he said, voice softer now.

Hesitantly, Marvin reached out to rest his hand at Whizzer’s wrist, steadying it above the chessboard. Whizzer stilled, eyes flicking down to where Marvin touched him then back up to Marvin’s face.

“You always do that,” Whizzer said quietly.
Marvin frowned. “Do what?”

Whizzer didn’t answer. He leaned in before Marvin could overthink it, pressing a quick kiss to his lips, gone almost as soon as it planted.

Marvin sat there for a moment afterward, breath caught somewhere between irritation and something softer. His hand lingered where Whizzer’s wrist had been, as if his body hadn't caught up yet.

Finally, Marvin leaned back in his chair, smoothing his tie once again, more out of habit than necessity, and gestured over to the board.

“Now,” he said, voice steady again,

“Move a pawn.”
