Work Text:
"Hey Jiminah.. Namjoon hyung just asked me to inform you that there might be a few changes in the project deliverables" Taehyung says as he takes the seat in a cubicle right next to Jimin’s.
"We just agreed upon the terms an hour ago. What could have possibly happened in an hour..?" Jimin whines and then as if realization struck both the men, they stare at one another.
"Jeon Jungkook" Jimin says, grudgingly.
As Jimin leaves his cubicle to meet his senior, Namjoon, he replays the various ways Jungkook had managed to sabotage his work ever since he joined a year ago.
Jimin was 27 and was working as the operations manager at the company for almost 3 years now. The people loved him, his seniors loved him. He loved the people, the work and the city. Having moved from Daegu, Jimin had expected life to be way harder in Seoul but luckily he found some amazing people here. His work buddy, Taehyung, was one such an amazing person. They consider each other their soulmates, although Taehyung's mate, Yoongi, sometimes protests against it. It didn't matter. Life was good.
But then a year ago, Namjoon brought in a new project manager. Jeon Jungkook, whose main aim in this office, seemed to be making Jimin's life hell. So what if Jungkook looks handsome and has the calmest pine forest scent, so what if his wolf sometimes howls inside him anytime they're close. It didn't matter because Jungkook would often find faults in Jimin's suggestions and then make him redo all the work from the beginning. And something tells him, today won't be any different.
As he enters Namjoon's office, the first thing he notices is the scent of pine forests. And then Namjoon's sandalwood scent follows. Both the alphas look at him, as if waiting for his arrival. While Namjoon greets him with a smile, Jungkook looks at him with a scowl on his face.
"Come, Jimin.. I was just discussing some of the project points with Jungkook.. I told him about our discussion from an hour ago.."
"And let me guess, he has found flaws in my suggestions and has asked me to redo them again?" Jimin quips, smiling at Jungkook, sarcastically.
"As a matter of fact, he hasn't."
"What?"
"Yes.. In fact.. He says he liked the points you've suggested and I insisted that both of you work on this project together. Which is also why I have called you here.. The clients have specifically asked me to ensure that the two of you are involved in this.. So I am just informing you that the marine bridges case will now be dealt with by you two.. So you'll have to work together, meet the clients and make sure that they agree and sign the contract!"
To be honest, Jimin's mind had stopped comprehending anything Namjoon mentioned, since he said Jungkook liked his suggestion. But then to realise that now he'd actually have to be working with the alpha, had him shook. There has to be some sort of a catch here. But before Jimin could dwell on it further, he finds himself back in his cubicle, with Taehyung eagerly waiting for the tea. So he spills.
"What? I honestly thought he'd managed to sway Namjoon someway.. I didn't expect this turn of events.."
"Right? And he looked at me without contempt today.. I don't know what to make of it.."
"Maybe he's finally come to his senses and realised how amazing you are.."
Jimin huffs.
"Or maybe he has a crush on you"
"That's more absurd." Jimin quips.
"Why? I seem to remember clearly that you had a hard time concentrating on work during Jungkook's first week here."
"That was a one-time thing.. And that was before I found out what a difficult person he is.."
"Come on Jiminah.. Even now I see you staring at him sometimes.. It's either a crush you're harboring for him.. Or maybe you're just so relationship deprived.."
"Don't say that! "
"You haven't dated in a million years.. I mean I am not opposed to people enjoying being alone.. But sometimes I feel like there should be someone to look after you.. When I'm not here.."
"I don't need a keeper, Tae.. And anyway we’re digressing.. I will have to work with Mr. Diary for the next three weeks."
"Good luck, my friend.. You're gonna need it" Tae says sympathetically, before both of them resume their work.
Thankfully it's Friday and Jimin cannot wait to go home and binge watch his favourite drama. He is just about to leave when the scent of pine forests hits him.
"Jungkookssi" Jimin greets with the fakest smile he can manage.
"I see you're leaving.."
"Great observation skills there.."
"I'm headed home too. I can drop you.."
Jimin's mouth remains hanging open for a minute. Of course this isn't the first time he has been dropped home by Jungkook but those times included multiple people. Never alone.
"Um.. I can take the bus.."
"We can discuss the project a little.. I'm headed the same way.. Just thought it would save us some time"
"Oh.. Okay.."
And that is how Jimin finds himself seated in the passenger seat, trying hard not to stare at the bulging biceps of the one alpha he cannot tolerate. The car seems suffocating, with their scents, it's driving Jimin crazy and yet he cannot get enough. He tries to divert his mind to other mundane things. But nothing helps. So he chooses to simply close his eyes and pretend to be asleep.
"I know you are awake," Jungkook says. They're at a signal, waiting for the light to turn green.
"How?" Jimin opens an eye and stares at him.
"I was taking a guess but hey look, I was right."
"Ugh.."
"Regarding the project, I read some of the points you've mentioned and I think they're actually good. But if possible we can also include some separate time in case the project encounters uncertainties.."
"Wait wait wait.. You find my suggestions okay?"
"I just said so"
"But you're always trying to find flaws."
"I never find them. They're there.. And I just share them. It's you who cannot handle positive feedback?"
"How is it positive if you find ways to put me down?"
"Look at it from a different way.. When I point out an error, you work harder the next time.. I'm motivating you to work harder" Jungkook says smugly.
"I work hard, always. You only like riling me up, for some weird reason I don't know"
"We are to work together on this project."
"And I assume it must be you who suggested it?"
"Of course.."
"I can't believe it. Why'd you do it?"
"To rile you up, as you put so frankly!"
They don't even realise how they reach Jimin's apartment, but when the car comes to a stop, Jimin's already red and Jungkook isn't any better.
"I hope your weekend sucks!" Jimin says, getting out of the car.
"Well I hope yours is an amazing one", Jungkook chuckles.
As Jimin lay in bed that night, despite his best efforts his thoughts go back to this one alpha.
Stupid man. And his stupid diary.
But I'll survive. No. I'll thrive. The project won't break me. He won't have the last laugh. He thinks before he falls asleep. And the next morning, he just doesn't acknowledge the fact that maybe he dreamt of an alpha with the doe eyes and soft smile.
******
On Monday when Jimin went to work, it was with a new kind of vigour. He had spent the weekend working on the project, he needed to bring his A game. He knew Jungkook would find problems in his ideas, so he'd spent good time coming up with backup plans too.
However when the plans were being discussed, Jimin didn't find any interruptions. Instead, Jungkook had commended him on his idea. What was the alpha doing?
In the evening, he found a cupcake on his desk. With a note saying good job.
It took Jimin a good minute to come to terms with the possibility that Jungkook was being courteous.
"I don't know. Why is he being nice all of a sudden?" Jimin complains.
"I don't know Jimin, it's not like he has been horrible to you all this time-" Tae is interrupted.
"Oh please.. I have been treated poorly by him.."
"I remember him bringing up cupcakes when he first joined.."
"Yes but then he stopped and became this rude man.."
"Yeah.. But he also dropped you home once, after an office party.." Tae points out.
"He dropped you too.. And Jinu too. We were all drunk.. He was being a good colleague.."
"Yeah.. So it's normal? "
"I don't know.. All I've ever seen him do is write in his diary and find ways to undermine me.."
"What do you think he writes in the diary though?" Tae muses.
"101 ways to torment Park Jimin"
"Or maybe recipes? Ideas?"
"Nah he specifically starts to jot down whatever it is, when he sees me.. I'm sure he's plotting against me.."
"I wouldn't count on it.."
"You're supposed to be on my side.." Jimin whines.
"I am..!"
******
The rest of the week passes in a similar manner and then on Friday they're informed of the client meeting in Ulsan.
"The client specifically asked for you two.. So make us proud and get him on board." Namjoon tells them.
Which is also how Jimin finds himself in Ulsan with Jungkook. The flight was uneventful and so was the ride to the hotel. It was a standard meeting. Both of them had already discussed the potential points and were ready for all the questions the client would possibly ask.
And the meeting went well. The clients were too happy with them. As the meeting was held at the hotel conference room, both the men had wasted no time to pack their bags and prepare for their journey home.
"The weather forecasters are saying that it'll rain and there's gonna be a cyclone. We'd advise you to stay.." The hotel clerk warns them as they are about to leave.
But they were stubborn and had left the hotel premises anyway. It didn't take them long to regret their decision. The weather turned horrifying and somehow both the men found themselves at the threshold of a small hotel near the airport.
"We.. We got caught in the storm.. We need two rooms" Jungkook says to the hotel manager.
"Sir, due to the storm, we have had more guests. We only have one room available.. If it's not too much trouble, you can share the room.."
Jungkook turned to look at Jimin, to which Jimin simply nodded. Jimin wasn't a fool. They were basically screwed if they didn't get any lodging here. He was grateful to have at least one room available.
"Well take it," Jimin says.
"Good.. Our men will clean the room in a bit.. Like I said, too much unexpected traffic.. Anyway.. We have an open buffet, and dinner is being served. It would be better if you have dinner and then head straight to the room, once it's done.. We don't have room service"
The two men nod and head to the tiny hall where the food was being served. The hall was crowded and Jimin and Jungkook didn't spend much time there.
Some time later, a hotel clerk accompanies them to their room. It's a small room with a decent sized bed and a chair by the window. There's a couch and a small table.
"I'm taking the bed" Jimin announces.
"The couch is too tiny for me.. It'll fit you though" Jungkook smirks. His scent suddenly became strong, making Jimin shiver.
"I called it first. The bed is mine"
"Fine! We're only here for a few hours anyway.. I'll call Namjoon hyung and inform him.. You can get freshened up in the meantime."
It was surprising to Jimin, how in sync both of them were. Compatible. His omega noted.
No, don't think of this.
An hour later, both the men had taken their respective positions in their bed and couch, the exhaustion from the day finally taking a toll on them.
****
It started with a few mewls. And then came the shivering. The lightning flashed again and Jimin knew what would follow. He didn't even realise when the tears began to stream down his face. And when the thunder struck, he gasped for air, so painful and so terrifying.
He wanted it to stop. He kept writhing. And then suddenly there was warmth. And a calming scent of pine forests. And soon he heard the words.
"It's okay, Jimin... I'm here with you.. Don't cry.. You're not alone.."
With great effort he opened his eyes to find brown eyes staring at him. And while he expected pity and mockery, all he saw in those eyes was care and concern.
"Are you okay?" A soft voice caressed his being.
Jimin simply nodded.
Jungkook stayed like that for a few more minutes. And just as he began to move, Jimin spoke.
"If.. If it's not too much trouble.. Can you please.. Stay.. Jungkookssi.." Jimin said, holding his breath. He never thought he'd have to show this vulnerable side to anyone, let alone Jungkoik. But here he was, staring at the alpha, hoping he'd agree.
"I was just grabbing my phone.. I'm not going anywhere."
The two of them lay side by side. Jungkook gently held Jimin's hands while they stared at the dark ceiling together. Every now and then there would be thunder and lightning, Jimin would flinch but Jungkook kept holding his hand. He kept whispering words of comfort. It calmed Jimin.
"My parents passed away in a car crash, it was raining heavily that night.. I can still hear the thunder.." Jimin says. "I was in the car with them.. I was 5. But I.. I survived.. I.. I didn't have any other relatives.. So I was sent to an orphanage.. But ever since that night, I.. I get these episodes anytime there's thunder.." Jimin says, as a few more tears stream down his face.
“I.. Don't know why I am sharing this with you. Not many know about this.. I just thought I should tell you.” Jimin says. Jungkook doesn’t respond. For a minute Jimin thinks that the alpha is asleep. So he stays quiet too. And then a moment later, the alpha speaks.
"My father left me and my mother when I was 3. My mother had been working ever since to make sure I had all that I needed.. But a few years ago, she encountered an accident which left her bedridden.. She has gotten better now, but I feel like it's my fault she had to endure so much.." Jungkook says, staring at the ceiling.
"Jungkookssi.. You.. You didn't have to tell me that.."
"I wanted to.. It's okay to be vulnerable, Jiminssi.. We're all fighting battles we don't like talking about.. You showed me a part of yourself and I showed you mine. We're equal now.."
Jimin turned to look at Jungkook, and found that the alpha was looking at him already. "Yeah.. We're equal now."
******
Jimin doesn't quite remember how he fell asleep or when, but he remembers a warm hand holding him, the scent of pines comforting him. And just like that, it felt like an invisible wall had been broken. Upon their return from the trip, they seemed to get along well at work. Both of them motivate each other, providing better ideas.
"Whatever happened in Ulsan?"
"Nothing..." Jimin says, sipping his coffee.
"You liar!"
"We just found common ground"
"Yeah right!"
Jimin takes another sip and smiles to himself.
*****
Since their return, it felt as if a massive change took place. Suddenly Jimin and Jungkook were working in tandem. Both were motivating each other and appreciative of each other's efforts. Their entire team was getting along well, too well.
Most days Jungkook would even offer Jimin a ride home, and Jimin would accept. Some mornings Jimin would find blueberry muffins in a brown bag on his desk. How did he even find out I liked them?
And then on some mornings, he would bring coffee for the alpha.
"Had this been a primitive era, I'd think he is courting you" Tae comments, one day when they're having lunch.
"Taehyung.."
"What? He is bringing you food, that's providing. He's driving you home, that's protection. The signs don't lie. Just be honest with me, you like him, don't you?"
"I.. I don't hate him.."
"Minah.. Be truthful to yourself.."
"Fine.. My omega might sometimes get excited over the alpha.."
"Just your omega?"
"Fine, me and my omega. What's with this interrogation?"
"I just want you to be happy, Jimin and you seem happier these days. You laugh more and are just more lively. So if there's a chance, I'd say you confess and get this alpha hooked"
"First of all, he's not a fish? Why will I hook him.. And two, I don't know.. I just don't think dating in the same workplace is good.. And it's not like I have clear signs from him either.. So unless he makes some clear cut gesture.." Jimin shrugs.
"Have you given a thought about the offer Namjoon hyung told you about? The project is about to end.."
That's another thing. A few days ago, Namjoon had called Jimin to his office and informed him of a job offer. Same company but different division. The pay would be better and so would the perks.
"I have no reason to say no.. I mean.."
"You still have time.."
It's in the evening when Namjoon calls the team for an urgent meeting. Jimin finds himself next to Jungkook and a few other members in the spacious conference hall.
"We just had a video conference with the clients.. And they're all extremely happy with our work.. Considering that only a few more tiny modifications remain, we can happily conclude that the project is about to end.. And I wanted to thank you all for your hard work" Namjoon says, followed by a big round of applause from the team members.
"Also.. As a token of appreciation for the success, a special dinner will be hosted for the project team tomorrow. Along with drinks. Since it's Friday, it'll be a good opportunity to let loose. The restaurant is down the street so y'all can easily finish your shifts here and head on straight. Unfortunately I won't be there but the arrangements have all been made.. So have a gala time!"
It's all smiles and happy faces. When Jimin turns to look at Jungkook, he finds the alpha jotting something in his diary. But he must have sensed Jimin's staring, he quickly closes the diary and smiles at the omega.
"Isn’t it amazing.. Good food and drink.. And two days off.. Sounds like heaven to me.." Jimin says
"Yes.. Especially after this hell of a project. We actually deserve this. They should have given us free spa sessions too.."
"Don't be greedy.." Jimin chuckles.
"Anyway, I'll be heading out now.." Jimin says, secretly hoping Jungkook would offer him a ride. It doesn't happen though.
"Oh.. I have to stay behind a bit. Namjoon hyung said he wanted to speak to me.. So carry on.."
Jimin nods and leaves, heading for his cubicle where he tells Tae about the dinner.
"Yah.. It is so unfair. I work in this stupid finance department, we don't get any perks." Tae huffs.
"You don't have to deal with clingy and nagging clients either.. Anyway.. Let's leave.." Jimin says, collecting his bag from the desk.
"No ride home today?" Tae quirks an eyebrow.
"No.. He has to stay back for some work I guess."
"Yoongi is coming to pick me up.. We’ll drive you home, Minnie.."
"Thank you, Tae.."
***
The next day, Namjoon introduces a new intern, Minji, who would be spending a month working under them. The omega is tiny and bubbly, bowing down and wishing all the workers one by one. She is assigned under Jungkook and hence sits beside him sharing the same table.
It's a normal day at work, and when their shifts are about to end, the 6-7 people involved in the project decide to head to the restaurant together. Jimin looks for Jungkook but the alpha is nowhere to be found. The other members drag him to the restaurant and he soon finds himself drinking and munching on food with them. But he isn't in the right headspace. Where is Jungkook?
He tries calling him, and even sends him a few texts. But they remain unanswered.
It is nearly an hour later that the alpha finally arrives. He takes his seat at the end of the table, away from Jimin simply because there were no other seats available.
The alpha searches for Jimin and finds him completely tipsy but staring at him. Unable to talk to so many people, he calls Jimin.
"Hello" Jimin picks up the call. "Why are you calling me from the same table?" Jimin slurs.
"How much did you drink? " Jungkook asks, all the while staring at him from across the table.
"Not much. Little just little bit" Jimin chuckles.
"Don't drink anymore"
"Why do you care, you didn't even come.. Where were you?"
"Working.."
"Huh.." Jimin says and disconnects the call.
An hour later, the people begin to leave. And soon it's only an inebriated Jimin and Jungkook on the table. No one else.
"Jimin.." Jungkook shakes the omega a little.
"Huh.."
"You need to get home.. I'll drive you, come on.."
Jungkook gently holds Jimin and carries him to the car. He drives the omega home and even carries him to the apartment door. Jimin manages to find the key and unlocks the door. He turns and wishes Jungkook goodnight.
"Thank you for helping me get home, Kookie"
The nickname takes the alpha by surprise.
"Oops you weren't supposed to hear the name.." Jimin chuckles again.
And then in the next second, he rises on his toes and places a soft kiss on the alpha’s lips.
The alpha is completely frozen. Jimin kisses him again but this time it feels like he's realised what he's done, he’s just about to retract when warm hands encircle his waist and embrace him to keep him in place. Jungkook kisses him back with such vigour that leaves him feeling sober. But the kiss was over in a few seconds, although it feels like ages.
Jungkook doesn't say anything else. Simply urging Jimin inside the apartment, and then leaving. Jimin manages to find his bed somehow and when he falls asleep, he swears he dreams of soft lips and the scent of pine forests.
******
To say Jimin woke up disoriented, would be an understatement. He woke up with the meanest hangovers he'd had in a while. For the first two hours, he just kept laying down trying to distract himself from the pounding in his head. And then suddenly, in a flash, it all came back to him.
Him getting drunk.
The car ride home.
The kiss.
He kissed Jungkook!
He sprung up on his bed. He had kissed the alpha. And now he was mortified.
He wasted no time calling Tae. He needed his friend, he just felt lost. Tae picked up on the second ring. He confessed it all, his drunken shenanigans and the kiss.
"Finally, it happened.. I knew he liked you too!"
"Tae.. I kissed him.. I.. Not him.. And how am I even gonna face him? What must he think of me?"
"At best, he'd think of it as a blessing. At worst, he'd think of it as a drunken error on your part. You won't know until you meet him on Monday. For now, just rest and enjoy the weekend. There's not much you can do"
And Tae was right, Jimin knew it. But how was he supposed to just forget this mammoth event? Jimin wasn't obtuse, he knew he had come to have feelings for the alpha. But to have feelings and to let those be known, are two different things. He just didn't know how to recover from this. Especially since he didn't hear from Jungkook, not even a text over the weekend.
Which is why, on Monday morning, as Jimin stood at his desk, he felt nervous. He was supposed to meet Jungkook in a bit, but he just didn't know how to go about it.
The first thing he noticed when he entered the meeting room, was that Jungkook wasn't alone. The intern, Minji, was sitting at the desk, jotting down something. Jungkook seemed to be dictating something and she was busy typing it on the laptop, the entire cabin filled with the scent of pine and cherries. It took Jimin clearing his throat to have them acknowledge his presence.
"Oh.. Jiminssi.. Please come and take a seat.." Minji offers. Still no words from the alpha.
Jimin takes the seat offered and finally turns to look at the alpha, who is busy reading a file.
"I received an email from the client today, they said they'd want a little something extra detailing. I thought it would be better to discuss it.." Jimin says.
"Yeah, I was in the CC and it was what I was working on, too.."
"So I have a few ideas.." Jimin begins reciting the points he had written down earlier.
"All of these sound logical.. Minji, here was also providing some insights.. I think we should call in all the team members and Namjoon hyung tomorrow.. We need all of them to be involved as well" Jungkook says and Jimin simply nods.
But Jimin doesn't leave. He wants to have a conversation with Jungkook but the alpha has resumed reading the file in his hand and providing dictation again.
"Umm.. I.. Can I talk with you?" Jimin finally manages.
"What about?" Jungkook says, eyebrows high, confused.
About the kiss.
"I.. Maybe some other time.. Anyway.." Jimin says instead as he takes his leave.
Tae confronts him as soon as he gets to his desk. "So?"
"He.. Minji was there.. And he.. He seemed cold? I don't know. There was no semblance of him even remotely interested in the kissing debacle.. It's as if he doesn't remember it."
"Oh.. Well maybe that's for the best.. But you can always talk about it later.. It's not like there won't be chances.."
"I guess.. " Jimin says, as both the omegas begin working again.
Jimin should be happy, right? With Jungkook not even acknowledging the kiss, he didn't have to worry about awkward office encounters or tension. But he wasn't happy. He had expected Jungkook to either be angry or happy about the incident. He just didn't expect ignorance about it. There was also a part of him hoping the alpha would express his hidden love for Jimin. Quite delusional, he knew, but he didn't care. Because by now he was past the point of pretending he didn't care, he did. He had feelings for Jungkook. These past few weeks, months had given him a new perspective on life. His omega felt calm in the alpha's presence. He felt at home.
So when the clock struck 5, and the people began to leave for their homes, Jimin secretly hoped for the alpha to offer him a ride home. Would also be a good chance to clear the air. But that didn't happen. He knocked on the alpha’s door at 5.30pm.
"Will you be leaving now?" Jimin asked.
"I'll have to hang back a little.. You can leave, Jiminssi" The alpha said and then turned his attention back to the blonde omega and their laptops.
"Oh.. Okay" Jimin said as he left.
But in reality, it was not okay. He was not okay.
The following day, the entire team was called in to discuss the last minute changes in their project plan at the conference room. Namjoon began addressing the major concerns and then asking for suggestions. Jimin had actually spent the previous day working on this particular project specification and he pointed out his suggestions for the same. Everyone hummed and nodded, even Namjoon was impressed with how meticulous his idea seemed. But then Jungkook interjected.
"I.. I think Jiminssi’s idea is great but.. There can be some improvements.. Actually Minji and I had been working on the same thing yesterday and her suggestion is similar to Jiminssi’s.. But.. She addresses a few important points which Jiminssi seems to have not considered.. I think you all should listen to her suggestions too.." Jungkook says and urges the tiny blonde omega to speak up.
Minji begins reciting her ideas but Jimin doesn't pay heed. He is still shocked from the interjection.
Over the previous weeks he had come to a common ground with Jungkook. But this one incident somehow brought back the numerous occasions where the alpha pointed out his errors. Jimin remembers sharing this particular idea of his with Jungkook yesterday, the alpha could have pointed out these additional points then. But no, he waited for an audience to point out these errors and this time it hurt, because he wasn't expecting it, because not only was he finding flaws but his intern was coming up with points to address those flaws. Jimin cannot bring himself to look at Jungkook, and yet somehow he can sense the alpha looking at him.
As Minji finishes, the members applaud and they decide to go with her suggestions.
"Very well done.. For an intern you have actually outdone yourself.. I must commend you too, Jungkook for the guidance.." Namjoon says.
"Actually, the basic idea was provided by Jiminssi.. We only added a few extra points to it" Jungkook says.
He's acknowledging your work, his omega screams. Then why does it seem halfhearted and a last ditch effort to appease him.
The team discusses a few more points before the meeting is adjourned. But in the entirety of the meeting, Jimin doesn't voice any opinion. He keeps staring at his notebook writing down points. In reality, he knew he just didn't want to look at Jungkook and find him smirking at him. All the progress he had made with the alpha, seems to have been only for this project. He obviously doesn't care.
As the members are about to leave, Namjoon makes another announcement.
"You will all find it in your email inboxes too but I think I'd rather say it here. The annual gala will be held this weekend.. So be sure to be there.. The company wouldn't be where it is without your hardwork.."
And then people began leaving the conference room, including Jimin.
"Jiminssi.." He heard the alpha call for him. But he pretended not to have heard and left anyway.
"And so you just left?" Tae asks during their lunch, in the cafeteria.
"What else was I supposed to do? The last few days have been so weird for me, Tae.. It's like I don't even know what I am doing anymore. First with the trip, then the kiss and now this sudden whiplash.. I am just confused and I don't know..." Jimin sighs.
"You could talk to him.."
"It's not like I didn't try.. He was too busy with the new intern"
"Control your jealous omega"
"I'm not jealous.."
Tae simply stares in response.
"Fine.. Maybe I'm a little jealous.. But what else am I supposed to feel? My omega likes him, I like him. But maybe he doesn't. Maybe I misread it all.."
"You said he kissed you back.."
"He did. Maybe he considers it a mistake which is why he doesn't wanna acknowledge it.." Jimin shrugs.
"Too many assumptions, Minah.. Anyway, you're coming to the gala? I checked the email today.. The company is spending a lot.. I'm bringing Yoonie.. They said we can bring a date.. I'd rather bring my mate" Tae chuckles.
"I am.. But I won't have a plus one, I guess.."
"Ask Jungkook.."
"I'm not stupid.. That's like the worst advice you've given me.. Anyway.. I'll get back to work.." Jimin says as he gets up to leave for his cubicle. Once there, he finds a brown bag with his favourite blueberry muffin inside. He looks around, there's no one there.. But there's a fading scent of pines. What does this even mean?
*****
On Friday, as Jimin takes the elevator, he finds he isn't alone. There's Jungkook, and he looks as surprised as himself.
"Morning" Jimin says curtly as the lift begins its ascent.
"Will you be attending the gala tomorrow?" Jungkook asks to which Jimin simply nods.
"You?"
"Me too.."
"Good.. Will you be coming alone? I mean.. Are you bringing a plus one?" Jungkook asks suddenly, which shocks Jimin because why does he care?
"Um.. No.. You?"
"Same here.."
It feels as if Jungkook has more to say but the lift arrives at their floor and both of them make their exits, and head towards their respective departments.
Jimin wonders why Jungkook had asked him. About the plus on thing. Did he want Jimin to accompany him? If yes, why didn't he say so? As he looks at Jungkook’s direction he finds the alpha jotting down something in his stupid diary. One of these days he will steal the diary and publish whatever is written there.
Jimin's doubts and questions about whether Jungkook wanted to bring him as a plus one are answered the next day at the gala itself, and Jimin only has himself to blame for his stupid assumptions.
******
It takes him an entire hour to get ready for the gala. Unlike other events, he put in extra effort into deciding his outfit and accessories. A part of him wanted people, specifically one alpha, to have their jaw dropped at his appearance. His omega was petty and he didn't mind.
The gala is already in full swing when he arrives. He finds Tae and Yoongi and talks to them for sometime before finding Namjoon and informing him of his decision regarding the transfer. He had given the decision a lot of thought and had come to the conclusion that he wanted a change. Namjoon was happy for him, and he wondered whether Jungkook would be happy too. Speaking of the alpha, he hadn't seen Jungkook yet.
Jimin had made up his mind to talk to Jungkook and confess tonight. He was gonna shift to the other floor anyway, he would rather have his heart light and free of any hidden crushes. In order to calm his nerves he headed to the balcony. He felt nervous. He needed some fresh air. He stood behind one of the pillars, trying to even out his breathing when he heard voices nearby. Voices of Jinu and Nua, two of their team members. And against Jimin's initial interest, he listens to the two converse. He doesn't pay much heed to the gossip, but then he hears his name mentioned and that's when his senses awaken.
"I actually think the entire amiable thing was just for the project. I've heard there's a position for senior project manager on the line.. Jungkook would love it.." Nua says.
"Yeah.. I mean imagine being at each other's throats all year long and then suddenly you're all friendly.. Plus, have you noticed Jungkook's change in behavior since the intern arrived? I bet they're dating."
"They arrived together today, so it's basically unofficially announcing about a potential relationship anyway .. And the way Jungkook has been introducing Minji to all the seniors and stakeholders tonight, I mean, I'm sure he wants the omega to get a permanent position here.. She'd be the perfect replacement for Jiminssi.."
"I mean Jimiin is talented.. So it's not going to be easy to fill his gap.." Nua says. The two of them continue some more but Jimin has already zoned out.
He doesn't even realise he's crying. Not until a tear drop lands in his hands. And as if to mimic him, Jimin finds a few drops of rain land on his face right below his eyes. The dark clouds have gathered, a storm was brewing just like in Jimin's heart and mind.
When Jimin went back inside, he found himself staring at the alpha he'd been hoping to find all evening, but now dreading to meet. Jungkook is holding Minji in his arms and the couple are currently pacing on the dance floor, swaying to the light music. The two of them look perfect together, they're even smiling. And even though Jimin can feel his heart shatter, he continues to stare for a few more moments. It takes him time to realise that whatever he felt was one sided. There was no future. He wastes no time, but quickly gathers his bag and hurriedly informs Tae and Namjoon about his departure. He just couldn't stay. He didn't even know how he had managed to hold back his tears. Tae didn't prod. He was sure his friend knew what was happening and just nodded as Jimin informed him that he was leaving. As he headed for the large door, he took one last look inside, and he found eager and confused doe eyes staring at him. But Jimin didn't wait. He left.
He took a cab and headed straight to his apartment. Outside the weather had turned worse; rain was now coming down harder. Once inside his apartment, Jimin finally let himself go. The tears came down running. Why? Why am I even crying? It was a stupid crush! He tells himself. But he knows he is lying. It wasn't just a stupid crush. After years of not having anyone to lean on, months of not dating anyone, Jimin had finally found someone who provided him comfort and solace. Jimin thinks back to their night at the hotel and he cries even harder. It was foolish of him to make assumptions. Jungkook was a good person. And maybe Nua and Jinu were right, maybe Jungkook was doing it all for the project's sake. But nothing consoled him, his heart broke. It took him a good fifteen minutes of breathing slowly to calm himself down and just as he decided to call it a night, he heard urgent knocks on his door.
Maybe it's Tae, checking up on me? He thinks but as he opens the door, he finds himself unable to comprehend what was happening.
"Jungkookssi?"
******
"W.. What are you doing here?" Jimin says, voice almost breaking, noticing the alpha completely drenched. The scent of pine forest is heavy and almost consuming. Jimin gently urges the alpha in, and brings back a towel for the alpha to dry their hair.
Jungkook doesn't say anything. He takes the towel and rubs it against his face and hair. And through it all, he keeps staring at Jimin with such an intensity that Jimin feels his knees almost buckle. But Jimin cannot take it anymore. He has had a very long and rough day, he doesn't know if he'll be able to take any more emotional distress.
"What are you doing here? " He asks Jungkook again, this time his voice doesn't quiver.
"There's a storm outside" the alpha responds.
Jimin doesn't understand and keeps staring in confusion, waiting for the alpha to elaborate.
"It's thundering.. And I.. I couldn't let you face it alone.." Jungkook says.
The tears begin to stream down again and this time Jimin doesn't even know if he can help himself. Just as he is about to turn around, to avoid the alpha, there's loud thundering and against his best efforts, he squeals. But then he finds himself cocooned in a warm embrace.
Jungkook gently holds Jimin and the omega shivers again.
"I'm.. I'm here with you, Jimin. Don't be scared" Jungkook whispers.
It takes a while but Jungkook slowly takes Jimin to his bed, and lays him on his bed. He sits by the bed in a chair. The rain keeps pouring down heavily and occasionally, there's thundering. Jungkook doesn't leave his hand. And there are questions he wants to ask Jungkook, why is he here? Why does he care? Why did he leave the gala?
But for now his omega is cherishing being held and regarded so gently by the alpha. He rejoices in the attention that is being paid by the alpha, who had been avoiding him. It is only then that he realises how much he had been starving for Jungkook's care and affection. How have I become this shameless..?
"Don't cry". Gentle hands rub away the tears from Jimin's face, he didn't even realise he'd been crying again.
"Jungkookssi.. Why.. Why are you here?"
"It was thundering.."
"That's no reason. I.. You should have been at the gala.. Why did you leave?" Jimin hiccups.
"I can ask you the same thing.. Why did you leave? You didn't even meet me.. You left without a word.." Jungkook says, but there's a sense of hurt and accusation in his words.
"I.. I didn't think you'd notice.. You didn't.. You.." Jimin hiccups again.
"Don't cry Jiminssi. Then my coming here would be for nothing.. Get some rest.. I'm here.. Right here.. The thunder won't hurt you.." Jungkook gently cards through Jimin's hair.
"Sleep Jiminah.." Jungkook whispers and somehow the scent of pines comforts him, he soon finds himself drifting. He has questions, but those can wait till morning. And somewhere down the way, he feels soft lips against his forehead. It must be a dream, a dream he doesn't want to wake up from.
Hours later, when Jimin wakes up, the weather has improved, the sun is out but his heart is gloomy. He wakes up alone, there's no one by the bed, just remnants of a scent of pine forest, a reminder that he wasn't imagining it all. The truth sits heavy in his chest. But Jungkook was gone.
******
There were no texts or calls from the alpha, over the weekend. And Jimin would be lying if he said he wasn't checking his phone every half an hour. He felt heart broken.
Why did he come here? Did he pity me?
He ended up calling Taehyung on Sunday, and crying about it all.
On Monday when he went to work, he was determined to avoid the alpha at all cost. He was going to shift to his new office in a day or two anyway, he just needed to avoid the alpha until then. But he didn't even have to do much, it seemed the alpha had taken a leave. No one knew why.
Is he okay? Jimin's omega felt uneasy.
By Wednesday, Namjoon had informed Jimin of his successful transfer to the other department. He'd even gifted Jimin a vintage pen, as a farewell gift.
"I'm not really leaving the company, Joon hyung.."
"I know.. But I'll miss you.. Especially the daily tussle between you and Jungkook"
Jimin felt his heart break a little. Against his better opinions, he dared to ask. "Is.. Is Jungkook okay? He's on a leave, I heard"
"He went back to Busan. He has taken the week off.."
"Oh.." Busan? Isn't that where he lived. Where his mom still lives?
"Hey.. You there?"
"Yah.. Joon hyun.. I was just thinking of something.."
"As I was saying.. I'm glad he had a little time to at least guide Minji before he left.. Else, we would have been in a difficult position.. Sudden leaves, and then you shifting.. Too much at the same time.. But I guess Minji is capable.. Just like her father."
"Umm.. Who is her father?" Jimin asks, confused.
"I shouldn't have mentioned it. Don't tell anyone.. She is the CEO’s daughter. She's working here to garner experience of a real office before she joins someday as an official employee.. Her father had requested me to specifically get her trained by Jungkook.. And to make sure that she is introduced to all the people we deal with.. She's faring well, I guess.. So that's a good thing.. Don't tell anyone Minah.. I'll have to leave in a bit.. But you should enjoy the few days you have.. You'll begin in your new office officially from Monday, right?"
Jimin doesn't even remember if he nods or if Namjoon just leaves on his own. He's too shaken up. Jungkook is back in Busan. Minji being the CEO’s daughter. Too much information in too little time. But there was a hunch, he felt as if he should be with Jungkook right now, as if the alpha needed a friend. And so he found out the alpha’s Busan address from one of their colleagues and left for Busan, informing Tae about it on the phone.
"You're insane?"
"Quite possibly. But I need to go.."
"Call me if you need me.."
"Will do"
To be honest, even Jimin felt as if he was being insane. Why was he here? Especially when the alpha left him hanging? His wolf might have been craving the alpha, but it wasn't clingy. It respected its pride. But look at him now, ready to knock on the door of a person, who might not even want him here.
It takes him three knocks and a few seconds of silence, before the door gets opened and he's met with the person he was seeking. Only the person isn't shocked, or even disgusted by his presence. Jungkook stood there, eyes red and cheeks pink, hair in disarray. The moment he sees Jimin, he hugs the omega as if his life depended on it. And Jimin? He didn't understand what was happening.
"I.. I have no idea.. How.. And why are you here.. But I am glad that you are.. I.." Jungkook says, stammering through, before the two part after the crushing hug.
"What happened, Jungkook?"
"My eomma.. She got sick.. I got a call from the hospital that night.. Around 4am.. That she was hospitalized and I just had to come home.. She suffered a stroke.. She's still in the ICU and I had just come back home to get changed and go back.."
"Calm down.. Just.. Sit for a bit.." Jimin guides Jungkook inside, unsure of where to head. But Jungkook guides them to the living room. The house is small, but it's cozy. Jimin notices the walls filled with photographs of Jungkook and his mother. It's a house that's lived in. A home. Once the two get seated he turns to the alpha. "What did the doctors say?"
"They said that she would be under observation for 72 hours. If this interval remains uneventful then it's a good sign and she'll recover. I.. I was just going to the hospital.. They'll tell me in a bit.. I'm.. I'm sorry I am so.. I've been crying a lot.. And I didn't even care to call or inform anyone-"
"Shh.. Do not apologise.. This is no time for thinking of these trivial things, Jungkook.. And it's okay to cry.. You've already done so much on your own.. It's okay to break down every now and then.." Jimin says, gently patting his back.
"Would you come with me to the hospital?"
"I will. Let's go."
It's a fifteen minute ride, and throughout the ride, Jimin realised that behind the outer strong appearance of Jungkook, lay a small boy too scared of losing his family. His heart hurt. He never knew this kind of love.
At the hospital they're informed that Jungkook's mother was out of danger and would be discharged in a day. Jungkook hugs Jimin in joy, and there's a small part of him which doesn't want the moment to come to an end. As Jimin waits in the waiting area while Jungkook meets his mother, Jimin thinks of his own family. It hurts him. The entire visit has also made him realise that he loves Jungkook alot. But he might not be the one for him. He grew up with love, the kind of love he hasn't experienced or known. He's not sure if he is even capable of loving someone that way. And moreover, it's not like Jungkook loved him. But he felt nice knowing that the one time he did fall for an alpha, it was an alpha like him.
So he dashes out of the hospital, ready to make his escape. I'll inform him later. But his plans are ruined as a strong arm stops him at the entrance of the building.
"Where are you going, Jiminssi?" Jungkook asks, breaths short and heavy.
"I was just.. Going back home.. I'm so glad your mother’s okay.. And I'm sure you need time to help her recover..and I hadn't even informed the office about coming here.. So.. I better leave" Jimin says, words lacking conviction.
"Jiminssi.. Why did you come here?" Jungkook asks, his eyes intense, and his scent suddenly too much for him.
"Namjoon hyung informed me about you leaving for Busan.. I just... I assumed something must have happened.. And... You might need help.. I don't know.. You did the same for me.."
"But.."
"We'll talk once you join again, Jungkook.. I am glad to know you're doing well and your mother’s okay now.. So be with her, help her get healthy.. And then when you come back, we'll talk.. For now, focus on your eomma.. She must be proud to have a son like you.." Jimin says, teary eyed.
"Hyung.. Are you crying?"
"Wha- no.. No.. I'm fine.. Take care.." Jimin says and turns around before walking out.
Maybe this is what was needed. Maybe he needed to take a break.
*****
It had been a week since Jimin returned from Busan. Was he okay? No. But he had things to look forward to. His new reporting officer at the 20th floor office was a kind alpha named Hoseok. The alpha would often invite Jimin to have lunch with him and his mate, an omega named Jin. Jimin would watch the two interact and swoon. There was also a part which ached watching the two wolves, he wished he could have what these two wolves had. But he was a realist. He knew this wasn't meant for him.
Upon his arrival at Seoul, he had taken time to think things over. And he ended up with the conclusion that he had been a victim of wishful thinking. Did he have feelings for Jungkook? He did. But he knew Jungkook didn't. The alpha had more pressing matters in his life. He'd been friendly and Jimin had taken that friendliness to mean something else. Otherwise he would have told Jimin about his mother. But he guessed he wasn't even as important a friend to him. Jimin had been projecting. He and his wolf had cried for days, but after a few days he'd somewhat come to accept the fact that he had a one sided thing with Jungkook. Jungkook was just a kind alpha helping him, helping Minji and he just couldn't tell the difference between liking someone and just being genuinely kind.
So when the alpha returned after a week, he made sure to avoid him and have as little encounters with him as possible. He had to protect himself, and he knew if he'd stayed close to the alpha, he'd never recover. So anytime the alpha would ask him to have lunch with him through text, he'd make up a reason and decline. Anytime he'd find the alpha in the staff cafeteria, he'd hide and run back to his office. But Jungkook didn't stop. And it truly shocked and frustrated Jimin. Why wouldn't he stop?
And then the inevitable happened. A week after Jungkook's return, it began raining heavily and the change in the weather was so sudden, most people didn't even have an umbrella on them. Jimin was one of them. As his shift ended, Hoseok had offered him a ride home but he'd politely declined, he didn't wanna be a third wheel between him and his mate. So he waited in the lobby area, hoping for the rain to cease.
Half an hour later, it began to rain even more and Jimin just sighed. Maybe I'll stay back.
"You know the rain won't stop anytime soon..." A voice rang out from behind him. A voice he recognised, he was scared to turn around and face him. But he knew there'd come a day. And today was it.
"Let me drive you home.." Jungkook said, a kind smile on his face, Jimin felt his heart melting. He was about to protest but the alpha beat him to it.
"I'd be shocked if you can come up with an excuse this time.. There can't be any.. So just.. Please let me drop you home.."
Resigned, Jimin only nodded and followed the alpha to the basement car parking area, where the alpha held the passenger door open for him and he took the seat hesitantly.
It's only half an hour, I can manage.
The first few minutes of the drive were silent. No words spoken. Only the pitter patter of the rain and the blaring horns could be heard. Jimin began to relax. This isn't as bad.
"So... Congratulations on the new designation" Jungkook says, taking Jimin by surprise.
"Thank you.. Umm.. Is your mother well now?"
"She is.. The doctor has asked her to take extra care of herself. I had told her about your visit, she has asked me to convey her thanks to you.."
"I.. I didn't do anything.." Jimin mumbles.
"You cared for me. Not something my mom has seen someone else do.."
"Um.."
And then there was silence for the next 10 minutes before Jungkook spoke again.
"Is the 20th floor treating you well..?"
"Yes.. It's still all new.."
"I'm sure no one's bullying you there like I was doing it.. " Jungkook laughs.
"You.. You never bullied me.. You were difficult and found fault in my files, but in hindsight you'd also help me improve my skills.. So... I don't know.."
"You know.. That day in the meeting when Minji spoke on the matter, on the idea you'd initially proposed.. I just wanted to apologize.. I was-"
"I know she's the CEO’s daughter and you were just encouraging her." Jimin interjected.
"Yes but I shouldn't have done so.. It wasn't right to you.. And I saw the way you froze.. I felt awful.. I'm sorry-"
"You really don't have to apolo-"
"Is that why you left our office in such a hurry.. Because of me?" Jungkook asked, only this time he wasn't looking at the road ahead, he was staring at Jimin as they waited at a red signal. Jimin felt small, his wolf was succumbing to the intense scent and the stare.
"I.. No.. Not because.." As Jimin stammered, the lights turned green, he felt relieved. Jungkook was no longer staring at him. Jimin felt suffocated. Just a bit more, his apartment was close.
"And then I left you, without a word. I have to apologize for that too.. I was so stupid.. I just.. I'm sorry for all the stupid things I have done.. I don't blame you for avoiding me.."
Jimin can now see his apartment. He just needed to escape these words. He didn't know if he could control his wolf, his own self.
"I've been a horrendous friend.. A bad coworker.. So when you began making excuses every time I tried to communicate, I got the hint.. I.. I'm sorry.."
The car stopped and Jimin wasted no time to unbuckle his seat belt.
"Thanks for the ride" He said as he began to step out in the rain, but Jungkook followed him.
"Wait.. Jiminssi.. I.. I really am sorry, I know I have been a jerk to you.. You're right in avoiding me-"
Something in Jimin snapped. He turned around and faced the alpha, both standing in the rain, getting drenched.
"Stop apologizing.. I am not avoiding you because of your sudden disappearance or your constant need to nitpick my work.."
"So you do agree you were actively avoiding me?"
"Of course I was.."
"Why else would you be doing so, if not for how I behaved with-"
"Because I had started having feelings for you! I needed to avoid you to get rid of these feelings. I fell for you, Jungkook, and it broke me when I saw you with Minji, when you disappeared that night.." Jimin breaks down. He doesn't even realise his tears streaming down, due to the rain but he can feel his eyes burn.
"But.. What..."
"But it's okay.. You don't have to worry about it.. I have finally somewhat accepted my mistake.. My one-sided thing will be a distant memory soon.. It was my own fault.. I misinterpreted your gentle and kind behaviour with care.. So I don't blame you.. You don't have to apologize, I don't blame you.. I can't blame someone for not having feelings for me.. I'll be fine.. And you can now continue without any guilt or whatever it is that's bothering you.. Please leave me be!" Jimin says and walks inside his apartment complex. He's drenched, and shaking with cold. But he didn't care. He just had to escape. This was not at all how he'd imagined his first conversation with Jungkook would be after his return. Jimin felt weak. He'd just laid down his heart open and he felt light but weak. What must he think of me?
He doesn't get to think about it for long before incessant knocks are heard at his door. Shaking Jimin walks to the door. He is dreading what's waiting outside but the words are out and there's nothing he can do now. So he hesitantly opens the door to find Jungkook, who's drenched and shaking. The alpha is staring at him intensely, scent heavy and posture rigid.
"What.. What are you doing here?" Jimin asks, avoiding the alpha's eyes.
"You can't just up and leave after saying all that.. You can't run every time. I won't allow it."
"What do you mean?"
"You thought wrong! You're so.. So complicated.. And I'm so stupid.. Moon goddess I am so stupid.. But you! You just assume and you run.."
"I don't understand. You should go.."
"You don't understand..? You don't understand how utterly and desperately I am in love with you?"
"What?" Jimin looks shaken. He takes a hesitant step back.
"Did you not feel anything when we kissed? When I kissed you back?"
Jimin felt shaken.
"What was I supposed to conclude? You didn't mention the kiss. You basically avoided me, you went back to being a mean senior at work.."
"I know.. I am sorry for all that.. But I kissed you back when you were drunk.. I felt as if I might have taken advantage of you.. I didn't even know if you remembered the incident.. And then Namjoon hyung told me about Minji and I just thought we would talk about it later.... Jimin I was supposed to confess the morning after the gala.. But then I had to rush.."
"That's the thing.. You didn't even inform me about leaving.. What was I supposed to think? You didn't even call or text.."
Jimin sits down on the sofa set nearby, uncaring about his drenched clothes ruining the couch. The tears stream down on their own accord.
He finds Jungkook kneeling down in front of him, gently holding his hands and urging him to look at him.
"That night, when I saw you in your apartment, I felt sick knowing I had hurt you.. I was gonna confess but when the call came, I left. I didn't call because not only was I busy with my mother, but also because I didn't wanna bother you.. How could I ask you for help after hurting you? But then you came, and I felt so stupid..."
"I didn't think you had any feelings for me.. It felt as if you just wanted me out of your life.. Like I had imagined all the soft glances, the kiss, the banter.. Everything.. I felt as if I wasn't good enough-"
"Jimin.. Never.. Never think that.. You're too good for me.. For anyone.. And I was stupid.. And a coward.. I should have told you about Minji and about my feelings..I'm sorry.. And then when I returned and learnt you had transferred.. I just knew j had screwed up badly.. I thought you wanted to avoid me because you realised how awful I am.."
"You're not awful, you're a human, as I am.. We have complex emotions.. And were both emotionally constipated, from what I can discern.."
"Where does this leave us then?"
"I don't know.." Jimin sighs, leaning forward, resting his head against Jungkook's shoulders.
"Well figure it out" Jungkook says, and Jimin nods against his shoulder
****
Jimin and Jungkook didn't date. No, they actually took a break. Jimin’s transfer to the new department felt like a positive change. He excelled in his new role and loved working for his new seniors. On the other hand, Jungkook was offered the role of a senior project manager in a new project, but he declined. Nobody knew why. The role paid well and when Jimin learnt of it he felt stumped.
The decision to not start anything came easily to both of them. They were both at important points in their lives, not ready to have too many changes take place at once.
They'd met the following day after their confrontation, at a cafe and came to a conclusion that they had feelings for one another but couldn't act on them at present. They needed time to work on their own issues. Which meant complete isolation from each other’s company.
Which brings us to now, 2 months later. Jimin and Taehyung are at the office cafeteria.
“He put down his resignation today. Everyone was in shock. But I think Namjoon hyung knew about it. He’ll be leaving in a week.” Tae says, while taking a sip of his coffee.
“He must have found a better offer..”
“That’s the thing. He hasn't. No one knows why he is quitting.”
“Oh..”
***
The following day, against his own protests, Jimin sent Jungkook a text. It had been months since they had any contact. And yet, he couldn't resist.
*Learnt about your resignation. Hope you’re doing well*
Simple and short. And yet Jimin waited with bated breaths for a reply. He saw the blue tick, indicating the message being read. And yet there wasn't any response from the other end. Every now and then he stared at the screen. But there was no response,
I shouldn't have texted. He obviously wants nothing to do with me. Just as we’d decided.
Which is why he felt shocked when he received a response the following day. Not the kind of response he expected but a response all the same.
*Hello Jiminssi.. Would you be able to spare a few minutes this evening? At 6pm, on the company terrace/garden space?*
*ok*
Jimin responded and felt giddy. At least he doesn't hate me.
At 6pm, Jimin found the alpha sitting on one of the long benches on the terrace, overlooking the city. The picture it presented was spectacular and yet Jimin couldn't give a damn about it. He was too taken with the alpha. Jungkook’s appearance had changed a bit. The alpha now sported long hair and his features seemed sharper. The scent, however, remained the same. Inviting, comforting. He took the seat beside him silently, and for the next few minutes neither of them spoke.
“I thought it would be better to talk in person.. I can't write long paragraphs..” Jungkook finally said.
“Tae informed me that you’d resigned, without any offer..”
“Hmm…” Jungkook nodded. “Also why I asked to meet you.. I wanted to say goodbye in person..”
“What.. What is that supposed to mean?”
“I’m leaving for Tokyo.”
“Tokyo?”
“I have been offered a job there, didn't require any recommendations. I wasn't going to accept it but my eomma, she wanted me to take it. ‘I want you to live your life, freely’ she said. The project is initially to take place in Tokyo and then in Paris. So I will be travelling a lot. Something she wanted me to do.. Something I have always wanted but couldnt..”
“That’s.. That's great” Jimin says, trying to keep his voice from breaking. Why am I tearing up? Alpha is leaving us.
“The past few months have given me new perspectives on everything. I was such a rude and stupid person. Especially rude to you.. I still think you shouldn't have forgiven me so easily.. I still have feelings for you.. But I.. We both have had the worst possible case of timing and place..”
“We did.. We never took the time to learn about each other.. And now, it’s too late I think” Jimin says, head bent in resignation.
“You are the most beautiful omega I have ever seen. Beautiful from the inside and out. The first time I met you here, I felt intimidated. Maybe a part of me tried hard to find errors in your work, to make you notice me.. I don't know. It’s stupid”
“Maybe it'll be a consolation to you, but I did have a tiny crush on you when you joined..”
“What happened then?”
“You became this error finding jerk.”
Jungkook chuckles.
“When are you leaving?” Jimin asks, voice finally giving in.
“Tomorrow. They have waived my notice period. So I am leaving early.”
“Oh…”
“I also wanted to give you this..” Jungkook hands a box to Jimin.
“Open it tomorrow”.
“Take care of yourself. And.. be in touch. Don't be a ghost” Jimin says, eyes now tearing up.
“I will.” Jungkook gently hugs Jimin and Jimin basks in the warmth.
“I will..” he repeats.
***
That night, Jimin cried himself to sleep. His omega kept weeping over the alpha leaving. And Jimin? Jimin felt heartbroken. He was happy for Jungkook but there was a part of him which felt comfortable knowing Jungkook worked in the same building, that sometimes they ended up in the same elevator, in the same room. In his heart, he felt there was a chance at a happy ending with the alpha. That chance seemed to have diminished now. When they had decided to take a break, he felt they'd come back eventually but he didn't think that Jungkook leaving him would devastate him this much. And yet he couldn't blame the alpha. All that Jungkook had said was true. Neither of them knew each other well. Jimin had no idea of the issues Jungkook had, before having to work on that project. They both had a lot to learn from life.
So the next morning when Jimin opened up the box with gentle hands, he found 3 things inside the box. The first item was another box containing an eye mask and airpods with prerecorded soft music to listen to. “Use them when it storms. They might help. You're stronger than you know” The note read. The tears that followed were instantaneous. With shaking hands Jimin opened up the next item, a blueberry muffin. And then there was just one item remaining. Jeon Jungkook’s diary. “Read it at your own risk” A sticky note said.
But Jimin wasn't as strong. He didn't read the diary. It took him a week before he gathered up the courage to begin reading the entries, one or two entries every day. Reading it all at one go, seemed too desperate.
*The omega wore a bright yellow jacket today. It felt as if he was the sun. The office brightened up. And when he smiled, I had no words.*
*I pointed out a few errors in Jimin's work. It felt horrible, noticing how he became sad afterward. I think he cussed at me. I don't mind it though*
Jimin chuckles as he reads the entries. It was a way of Jungkook opening himself up for him. Jimin understood. But he didn't understand why he was doing it now? When it all ended?
*Asked around and found out that the Taehyung dude is his friend. Not his mate or boyfriend. Why are they always attached at the hip? He smiles so brightly at that man. Maybe one day he’d smile at me like that*
*I think of all the dessert treats I have left on his desk, he likes blueberry muffins the best. He looked so happy when he took a bite. Sticking to this dessert from now on*
Was it a coincidence that Jimin read this entry while eating a blueberry muffin? It's been a month since Jungkook left and Jimin is finally coming to terms with it all. Minji has joined the team on the eighth floor. Namjoon got promoted and Tae is still cussing at working in Finance. But Jimin feels as if he has changed. Tae has introduced Jimin to a friend of his, Ha Sungwoon. The alpha is decent and kind and they've met a few times for coffee dates. Who knows maybe he’ll feel the sparks again.
The following week, it stormed and rained. And Jimin used the gifts Jungkook had left for him. It worked. And yet, he would openly confess that he’d rather have the alpha by his side helping him through the storm instead.
*I held Jimin in my arms last night. He has these terrible instances when it rains. I wonder how he goes through them alone. I wish I could be with him, help him through it. He has gone through so much. The omega might be tiny but he's the strongest person I know*
* I kissed him! Or maybe he kissed me.. I don't know but I kissed him. But he was so drunk. I feel like I have taken advantage of it. How will I face him? Especially now that I have to work with Minji and him.*
*Minji presented her ideas today and I felt so guilty. Jimin didn't deserve this. Heck I shouldn't have let this happen. He must hate me now*
Jimin turned the page. But there weren't any entries for the entire month. He flipped through the pages and found one.
*How can I ever explain to Jiminssi what his coming to Busan meant to me. I left him that night. Didn't even inform him and yet he showed up. No one has ever done something like this for me. And yet he left in a hurry. I don't know if he will ever forgive me. Eomma wants to meet him too. She is so happy to know there's a person who cares for me, besides her.*
*He is avoiding me. And I can't blame him. I deserve it.*
Jimin bookmarks the diary and gets to his bed. It has been 3 months since the alpha left. Jimin doesn't know why he is still reading the diary. He knows how it ends and yet he cannot stop. Jimin and Sungwoon didn't work out. Mostly because Jimin realised that he needed to be able to love himself first, before heading into a relationship. He has been too hyper independent and lonely. He needed to live a little. So he socialised more, went to a yoga class and even went on a trip with Tae and his mate.
*It's been a month since I saw him. I miss him. But he was right when he said he needed a break. I think he needs to see that there are so many better people deserving of his love. I still don't understand how he could forgive me so easily. He shouldn't have. I got offered a job in Japan. Maybe I’ll take it. Eomma wants me to take it. But it would mean not seeing Jimin for months. At least here I can run into him at times. Can I just leave? But if I stay, I fear he won't move on. He needs to know that there are better people out there. Maybe he’ll come to his senses. My alpha is screaming at me. But what can I do? I think I love him. Which is why I think he deserves more. Maybe with me being out of the picture, he can finally move on and find someone truly deserving of him*
Jimin reads and cries. It's been 4 months. He did meet people, he did try and yet he cannot move on. He misses Jungkook. But who knows Jungkook might have found someone by now.
*I am gonna tell him about my departure today. And against my better judgements I am going to leave this diary with him. Maybe he can see that I was unintentionally stupid. I won’t tell him that I am to return in 6 months. Maybe he won’t even read this thing at all! But if he does read it..
If you do read it.. And somehow still like me.. I'd like to say.. What is wrong with you? And also… I think I will always like you.. Take care Jimin*
As Jimin closed the diary, he felt his hands shaking. He ended up calling Taehyung and telling him everything. It was close to 6 months since Jungkook left and to be honest, Jimin was happy with the closure. He needed it. He liked an alpha and the alpha liked him back. But the timing was wrong so it didn't work. That's just life. He could work with it. One thing the diary did help him realise that Jungkook was right. He was too easily persuaded and compliant. Taehyung asked him to visit a counselor. His past with his parents death and the overall experience in life, had left some cracks which he never addressed. So he did. He went to the counselor and continued his sessions. Life was finally returning to track.
And then two months later, something happened. It was a company event. Jimin had arrived with Taehyung and the two were making small talk with the guests when he smelled it. The scent. He turned his head and found doe eyes looking at him, just as shocked. The alpha wore a black suit with a white shirt. His hair was back to a shorter length. And the alpha smiled at him.
15 minutes later the two of them stood beside one another in the balcony of the banquet hall.
“When did you..” Jimin began
“ Two and a half months ago.. You.. You look well, Jiminssi..”
Jimin gulped. “So do you.. Did you know?”
“I had no idea you would be attending,” Jungkook says sincerely.
“Oh..” Jimin’s omega wilts. He was here for over 2 months and he didn't reach out. He didn't even know I would be here. He just doesn't care anymore. Jimin's scent turns sour.
“Jiminssi.. Please look at me..I haven't seen you in months.. Let me at least get a good look at you” Jungkook smiles again but Jimin doesn't comply. He keeps staring at the landscape ahead.
“I read your diary”
“The entire thing?”Jungkook asks, voice urgent.
“Yes. I did socialise more.. I went on a trip.. I even met someone..”
“Oh..” Jungkook says to take a step back.
“It didn't work out. Tell me why Jungkookssi.. Even after months.. I am here, hoping my feelings would be reciprocated when I know it wont? I'm visiting a counselor, working on myself and even then, one look at you and I'm back to square one. Where.. Where you seem so casual and unaffected.. How is this fair?”
“Un.. Unaffected? You think your presence here tonight hasn't affected me?”
“Has it? You've been here in Seoul for two months. Not once did you even text me.”
“I didn't want to intrude in your life, Jiminah.. I.. thought you'd have moved on”
“And you? Did you?”
“Didn’t you read the last line of the diary? I went to therapy to deal with my unresolved issues about the fear of people leaving me. It helped. But there’s always room to grow.”
“Then why didn't you reach out?” Jimin finally turns to look at the alpha.
“ I was counting on fate. On coincidences. I didn't want to intrude. If it's meant to be, we'd meet. That's what I kept telling myself.” Jungkook says, holding Jimin's hands in his. “I just didnt want to disrupt your life”
“Then.. Does this mean… Is.. Is this a sign.? Because Jeon Jungkook, my life feels incomplete without you.. I wish I knew why.. I really like you and I would like to date you, if that’s okay with you” Jimin stammers and almost chokes on his words, too overwhelmed. He raises his eyes, daring to look at the alpha, only to find the alpha teary eyed smiling at him.
“Park Jiminssi, the feeling is mutual.” Jungkook says, as he gently tilts Jimin’s face up and places a soft kiss against the omega’s lips.
*****
One year later.
The waves crash against the beach and the sound is almost deafening but not to Jimin, not to Jungkook. They're in Busan, on a vacation. It was all Jimin’s idea anyway. To visit Jungkook’s eomma and spend a few weeks of the summer there. They have been in a steady relationship for a year. Jungkook had been assigned as a regional manager in the Seoul Division of a major advertising agency, while Jimin worked at the same office. They had managed to find a pace, a rhythm between them. Both of them had also attended a few sessions of the counselor together. It helped.
Jimin felt happy. Jungkook was elated. He no longer had to scribble stuff down in a diary. Anything he felt, he told Jimin directly. Even the silliest of stuff. The two of them were still stupid and silly in their own ways, but they were also in love and adored one another. Sometimes love comes knocking at your door but the timing’s all wrong. Sometimes you wait with the door open and yet it doesn't show up. And there are times, when love knocks and you're brave enough to open the door to your heart, to lay bare your insecurities and your scars. And that's when you know, you’ve found the one.
