Work Text:
Lumina was on her balcony, leaning against the banister, staring silently at the Erdtree. Soon she would go to meet Mohg, Morgott’s twin brother. The one who had declared himself the Lord of Blood. Who had abducted Miquella the Kind, so that the eternally young Demigod could be freed from his curse, and not only physically grow but become a God.
A God to whom Mohg planned to be consort.
From what Morgott had told her, Mohg had never believed in the Golden Order. Somehow, he’d made contact with an Outer God called the Formless Mother. He became a dedicated follower of hers and fell deeper and deeper into depravity.
After the Shattering, Mohg had stolen Miquella and disappeared. Morgott would rarely receive letters from him, which somehow slipped into his paperwork. Always inquiring about his health and engaging in small talk, he would end with an invitation for Morgott to join Mohg. Telling him that there would always be a place for him in the Mohgwyn Dynasty.
Morgott, of course, never accepted.
Thanks to Varre and some careful workarounds, like Morgott scaring the tar out of him, Lumina could now go and meet the Lord of Blood.
Lumina sighed softly, closing her eyes and enjoying the cool breeze.
Morgott had asked to come with her, a spark of hope still within his heart. If he spoke to Mohg face-to-face, if they could actually talk, there was a chance.
There was a knock at her door.
Lumina walked back into her room, calling out as she did.
“Come in.”
Morgott entered the room, looking tired and uncertain. “Pardon the intrusion.”
“You’re never a bother, Morgott.” Lumina smiled at him as sweetly as she could.
He looked away, a sign of his shyness, and Lumina gestured to the two comfortable chairs by the fire - with one large enough to fit the King of Leyndell - a small table between them with fresh tea and a plate of snack cakes.
“Would you like some tea? I had a spare cup in your size brought, just in case.”
“Aye, that would be appreciated.”
Morgott often visited randomly; sometimes he’d stay away for days due to work. Being a King is a busy job, after all. So whenever he had the chance to visit, Lumina never turned him away.
They sat by the fire, Lumina serving the tea and subtly nudging the plate of treats closer to Morgott. He said nothing, but did take a snack cake. Lumina counted it as a victory.
Morgott was filling out more now that he was eating the appropriate amount for a man his size. For so long, he’d eaten far less than he should have to help hide that he was an Omen.
For a while, they sat in silence, occasionally getting another cake to snack on or sipping their tea, listening to the fire crackle away. It wasn’t an uncommon thing for them; words weren’t always needed.
“Lumina.” Morgott’s voice was low, but with all of the quiet, it sounded like thunder.
“Yes?” Lumina would never admit she jumped a bit. Nope, not her.
“We go to Mohg tomorrow, correct?” He was still staring at the fire.
“Yes. I’m sure Lord Godfrey can handle things himself for a little while, and I know how much it means to you to go with me. I haven’t changed any plans without saying, don’t worry.” Lumina laughed a little as she said it. She knew part of why he was asking.
He hadn’t wanted her to go to Volcano Manor to face Rykard by herself, hadn’t wanted her to go without him specifically. But it had been outed that the King was an Omen, and he was dealing with the fallout from that, and Rykard had to be dealt with at some point anyway, so…
She may have snuck away from Leyndell to deal with the Lord of Volcano Manor herself.
(And got caught and horrifically tortured and had to be saved by a very sour Morgott, but that was beside the point. Honestly, all that mattered was that Rykard was dead, Morgott and Rya had forgiven her, Rya had found a home in Leyndell as Lumina’s personal scout, and she wasn’t grounded anymore.)
“I thank thee for understanding.” He sipped his tea.
“Mohg is your brother, a brother you haven’t seen for a very long time. Of course you’d want to see him again.”
“I bear concern for thee as well.”
Lumina stopped mid-sip, lowering her teacup and turning to him.
“Why is that?”
“Because Mohg is unpredictable. He stole Miquella the Kind from his Haligtree, to become consort to a god who may well not even want him. If he is willing to do such things, there is no telling what else he may be willing and capable of doing.”
Morgott turned to Lumina, his eye filled with a variety of emotions.
“I almost lost thee once already, before I even knew it possible. Before I dared to acknowledge mine own affections for thee. I dare not take such risks ever again.”
Morgott set down his cup, reaching over to take Lumina’s and set it next to his before taking her hand.
“I- if thou wouldst allow it-” He stopped to take a deep breath.
“Morgott?” Lumina squeezed his hand gently.
“If thou wouldst allow me, I would like to remain with thee tonight.” He looked into her eyes.
Lumina’s face got hot; the implications of his words were clear.
“Morgott…” She squeezed his hand again. “I would love for you to stay, but only if you’re comfortable doing so.”
His eye closed, and he took another deep breath, holding it for a moment before releasing it. “Yes. I wish to stay here tonight, with thee.”
Lumina smiled and placed her other hand on his. “Then, you’re more than welcome to. I want to be clear on something, though.”
“Yes?” Morgott shifted closer, listening intently.
It wasn’t a surprise to Lumina to learn that she was Morgott’s first romantic lover. He’d had sex before, to tend to physical needs, but that was all it had been.
Lumina could remember very little of her past life, but she’d been in love once. She’d been married, had two children, and had a family. She felt that familiar pain in her heart at the thought. Aiden had filled her in, but she still didn’t really remember.
She’d lost her little Rose, and Erik had died at some point as well. Only her son, Aiden, remained alive, and as a member of the Night’s Calvary, no less.
“We… well, did you want to… be intimate?”
“Intimate? You mean, have intercourse?”
Why did it sound so weird? Why was it so hard to talk about with him? Was it because of the still uncertain nature of their relationship? Was it because of Lumina’s lack of memory, because of her nonexistent social skills?
“Uhm… yes.” Lumina forced herself to meet his gaze. She was a grown woman, and she would handle this maturely.
“I… well, it was an idea.” Now it was clear he was forcing himself to keep looking at her face.
“We don’t have to, you know. We can just… lay in the bed together. Perhaps even hold each other.”
Morgott let out a soft breath, as if the idea hadn’t occurred to him. As if the fact that two lovers staying the night together, not having to be sexual, wasn’t something that he’d even considered.
“That would be nice… to simply hold each other.”
Lumina squeezed his hand gently. “Then, how about we get comfortable?”
It took them a while to find a position that they were both comfortable in, but they did in the end. Lumina ended up laying atop Morgott, her head resting on his chest. The sound of his pounding heart slowed as he calmed down; coupled with his warmth, it lulled her into sleep.
The feeling of Lumina laying on his chest, her fingers gently stroking the skin and fur, the sound of her breathing easing into sleep. The knowledge that she was safe. Morgott slept surprisingly well that night.
