Halyard: making appointments

Summary:

prompt 49: making appointments

Work Text:

'Please, hold the line.' Fuck this, Jack has been holding. He's been holding for a couple of minutes now, so long that fucking peppy melody is seared into his brain and he's close to reaching through his cell to strangle whoever is keeping him in this damn loop.

He growls at his phone. This is ridiculous. He doesn't need this appointment that badly, does he? One more 'Please, hold the line,' and he'll fly off the handle.

He's about to pull the phone away from his ear and disconnect the call, when he hears Robby ask, "What are you growling about?"

"Waiting," he grouses. "Fucking VA office. I just need to make an appointment." He has a thousand things he'd rather be doing right now, like the laundry, which he can't do one-handed while holding the damn phone.

"Come on," Robby says and gestures for him to hand it over.

"What are you doing?"

"Calling in the cavalry," Robby says with a smile and takes the phone from him. "Hey, Frank!" he calls out. Jack gets up and follows Robby, who's now walking into the living room where their partner is lying on his yoga mat, tapping his feet, doing his physio.

"Hm?" Frank blinks up at him.

"Take the phone," Robby instructs and bends down. "When someone picks up on the other end, make an appointment. Any day is fine."

"Okay." Frank reaches out and takes the phone. He recognizes it as Jack's and looks at him. "Who am I talking to?"

"The VA office – if anyone ever picks up."

Jack is a little in awe of what's happening here. Frank easily accepts the job Robby has given him and connects the phone to his ear buds. A moment later, he closes his eyes again and starts doing his physio to a slightly different rhythm.

"What…"

"Don't ask. Just accept it."

He does get to do the laundry then, sorts the colors, throws everything in the machine, checks upstairs again. He's just finished setting up the program when he hears Frank suddenly start talking in the living room. He's using his patient-satisfaction-score voice, too, from what Jack can make out.

A while later, Frank calls out, "Thursday the 22nd, at nine a.m.!"
