Chapter Text
Prologue
Their first meeting could have gone better.
“Skaði, may I present my daughter, Lucinda,” the rather large man with thick black hair and beard intoned reverently.
“This is her?”
The goddess of winter slammed her bow into the ground and stared down into the – formerly – sleeping face of the infant girl. An infant who, like many infants who had been woken suddenly, screamed bloody murder. The only difference being that this screaming caused all the dogs, cats, and birds in a three-block radius to start howling, hissing, and generally making a huge racket.
The vines erupting from her pudgy, baby hands aiming right for those pale blue eyes in an attempt to gouge them out, probably didn’t endear her to her father’s sworn goddess either.
Her mother, however, thought it was funnier than hell and laughed, pointing at the woman she still called that ‘bleached skiing twat.’
Skaði snarled at her, “I don’t see Holde claiming the little nightmare.”
The leader of the Oregon Holde’s Maids eyes narrowed dangerously, their silvery-grey flashing. “Holde only claims a maid when she turns thirteen, but she’ll be trained even if you, don’t want her.”
“And what the fuck is that?!” the Goddess yelled, slapping at the vines that continued to try and stab her.
“She’s been marked, my lady,” her father said, holding his daughter closer and hushing her cries. “By Yggdrasil.”
The goddess sucked at her teeth, pale eyes hooded. “Marked…if that’s true, you’d do best to put her out of her misery now.”
Jonna hissed at her like a housecat. “I don’t care if you are a Goddess, you try and touch my kid and I’ll blacklist every Isa in the Pacific Northwest that calls on us,” she threatened, and being as she was the head of Holde’s human clan in Washington and Oregon, Skaði knew she could and would, because they kind of hated each other.
“You keep your freak daughter, Hag,” Skaði swore, grabbing her bow and leaving.
“You have to know that’s not an insult to us!” Jonna screamed back.
“And she will never be Isa!” the goddess shouted over her shoulder.
“Fuck you!”
