Who knew it'd be so hard to take care of a toddler?

Summary:

Yamada and Aizawa adopt three and a half year old Izuku after the police deem his mother unfit to care for him. Izuku turns out to be a very hard kid to care for, with his autism and tendencies only heightening the struggle.

Notes:

I haven't written in YEARS and im also likely mischaracterizing izuku. But it's an alternate universe for a reason! :m
Izuku starts out as non-speaking in this, his first words happen later on. It's 2:13 AM as of writing this note, and i am ill, please be kind to me 🙏🏼

Chapter 1: Picking up Izuku.

Chapter Text

Saturday, 5:16 A.M.

Yamada and Aizawa were getting ready, making sure everything was set up, getting dressed. They had places to be.
Once in the car, they made a stop at Shouta's favorite gas station, as it was open at all times. They picked up a coffee to share, an energy drink, and some fruit leather in case the toddler would want something. Then, the hour and a half drive began, all the way to the only children's hospital in Musutafu.

6:52 A.M.

The couple got out of the car, having taken an extra few minutes to find parking close by. They walked for a bit until they got to the main doors of the hospital, walking in and finding the receptionist. A few words were exchanged before they were told to see the child psychologist and speak with the police again before picking up the kid. The couple thanked the woman before walking to the nearest elevator, following the directions to the rooms she had spoken about. Once they reached the second floor after going through a briefing with the police, Yamada and Aizawa hurried to the child psychologist's office, where a tired, young, and comforting seeming woman sat, looking at her computer. She looked up at the two before smiling.
"Ah! You must be the Pro-Heroes here to pick up Izuku, correct?", she asked.

"Yes. We were told to speak with you and the police managing his case.", Shouta responded, his voice flat and monotonous. They both took a seat on the provided chairs in the room.

"Right. Well, you two are taking on a big task," she spoke. "Izuku isn't a.. well.. normal child, if you catch my drift. He has been through a lot, and has higher support needs than most kids. He isn't fully potty trained, still needs pull ups. He has a few diagnoses, that of which are: Autism Spectrum Disorder, Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder, and Pica. He won't be an easy kid."

"We understand, we are confident that we can do this.", Hizashi spoke, his hand resting on top of Shouta's.

"Good. Are you aware of the full extent of his background?", the psychologist asked.

"We had a brief run of it a few minutes ago," Shouta spoke.

"Okay. Well, commonly as a baby and young toddler, Izuku's mother would leave him at home or drop him off at friends' for days on end to find more drugs. She was an addict, and was very negligent towards him. He has grown up around hardcore drugs, and the usage of such has been normalized to him. A few weeks ago, a phone call was made to the emergency services from a woman who was close to his mother, she said that Izuku was acting weird and drowsy -- like he'd been drugged or something. She also said that his mother had dropped him off, briefly mentioning her usage, saying she was worried that the young boy had ingested his mother's drugs. Soon after the call, an ambulance was sent out to retrieve him, and then he came to our hospital. Extensive testing was done to confirm that he had been given two types of drugs, marijuana and ambien. He had his stomach pumped. We kept him for evaluations and tests, we found that he suffered from malnutrition, and the police deemed his mother unfit to continue caring for him. He is very prone to meltdowns, and is quite skittish, he still hasn't said his first words yet, but he is a very sweet and trusting boy. That is the fullest extent of his background that i am allowed to give.", the psychologist's voice was more serious now, a somewhat worried look on her face.

Hizashi and Shouta sat still for a moment, thinking about the words spoken.
"..we'll keep him safe, and care for him as much as possible.", Shouta finally spoke. The psychologist smiled.

"Good. Well, that is all i needed to say to the two of you, you are free to go collect Izuku and sign his discharge papers. The people managing his case should be in contact with you soon to discuss terms of proper adoption.", Hizashi smiled at that.

7:32 A.M.

Hizashi and Shouta made their way to the room where izuku currently resided, they were finally taking him home. Once inside, they were met with the barely awake toddler who was clutching a hospital provided sippy cup and chewing on the spout of it. His sleepy eyes looked up at the couple, the sight somehow making him feel sleepy again. When the two adults walked closer, izuku let out a sleepy whine.

"Hey, buddy," one of them spoke. "We're here to take you to your new home, we're gonna be your new parents." The voices were comforting, they felt warm. They made him feel warm. He liked that. So much so that he let Yamada pick him up while Shouta grabbed the stuff that was izuku's: a small plushie, and a normal pair of clothes that the hospital had given him.

Izuku had fallen back asleep while his new parents signed his discharge papers, only to be jostled awake when Hizashi put him in his convertible car seat. He let out a small whine, reaching for the comforting warm. Hizashi shushed him, "it's alright, little listener, i'm just putting you in your car seat. Gotta keep you safe, alright? We'll be home soon." His voice felt so smooth, it made Izuku feel so sleepy. On the ride home, he fell asleep, occasionally letting out a small whine, likely having to do with whatever dream he was having.

Yamada and Shouta knew they were taking on a big task, and they couldn't be happier to do such.
