Chapter Text
Martyn was… nervous to say the least.
He finally decided to go on a journey.
And while, don’t get him wrong, he was excited, but he didn’t think the Watchers would allow him to leave.
After all, Grian had to run from the house, and Jimmy was only allowed out because he proved “incompetent” to the Watchers’ standards.
Martyn was valuable compared to Jimmy.
So when the Watchers agreed to him leaving, he was cautious.
Supposedly, there were no strings attached. But you could never be too sure with them.
Still, he didn’t dare waste this chance for freedom.
It was just weird, being given a chance to leave.
As he walked out the door from the overly detailed mansion of purple and white, he saw her.
The girl that convinced him to ask the Watchers if he could leave.
The girl that accidentally stole his heart.
Cleo sat on the doorstep, dark green shirt nicely cascading down her more mintish-grey tone of skin. Her tights of black and white led to an iconic pair of leather sneakers. Her messy red hair went down her back to about halfway down her chest. She was sitting there, looking bored as ever.
It was only when Martyn spoke that she perked up.
“They let me go,” he said, still not sure how to process how easy it was to convince them.
“About time,” Cleo sassed. She stood up, and started walking. After a while, she turned around and asked, “you coming or what? If you don’t, I’m leaving you behind.”
“Yeah, right, sorry,” Martyn stuttered. He jogged quickly to catch up with her. They then once again fell back into silence.
Cleo was clearly annoyed with that. “Alright,” she demanded. “What’s up with you?”
Martyn wasn’t sure how to phrase it. “I guess… I just didn’t think it would be so easy?”
Cleo scoffed. “Martyn,” she said, “we’ve been dating for about four years now. How could the Watchers supposedly split us up now?”
Oh, you have no idea, was what he wanted to say.
Instead, he said, “yeah, I guess you’re right.”
That made her smile. “Of course I am,” she boasted playfully. “Where would you be without me?”
“Probably dead,” Martyn joked back. Cleo did not realize just how accurate that was though.
“Whatever the case, just be excited about the journey. I mean, you’re finally being let out of the house for once in a while. Enjoy the moments you can, you know?”, she asked.
Martyn began to smile even wider. “Fair point. So, any plans for this journey?”, he replied.
Cleo was contemplating it. “I don’t know, really”, she answered. “Was kind of thinking that we go wherever and see what happens.”
“Ha, imagine we get wrapped up in some crazy adventure from just randomly walking around,” Martyn jokes.
“I know, right?”, Cleo jokes right back. “I mean, it’s not like something like that could ever happen, right?”
“Yeah, toooooooootally not,” Martyn replies as sarcastically as possible.
The two share a laugh, and fade back into silence, the only noise being the trees swaying and leaves crunching under their feet.
“Seriously, though, thank you for convincing me to do this,” Martyn says.
“Anything for you, lovable idiot,” Cleo responds, and while it seems mean, it is said in a tone that Martyn understands is her version of loving.
Martyn laughs, and continues to walk deeper into the forest with his girlfriend, wandering wherever until they find something.
