Work Text:

In the rearview mirror, I saw the setting sun on your neck

And felt the taste of you bubble up inside me

The golden sunlight filtered through the classroom blinds, illuminating everything in its reach with a brilliant comforting glow. He was no exception to this. The sun accented his features, casting shadows across his face in the most beautiful way she’d ever seen. She observed him carefully, indulging in the feeling of her love for him bubbling up inside her heart; a feeling she was all too familiar with.

But with everybody watching us, our every move

We do have reputations

We keep it secret

Won't let them have it

But whatever they had going on, whatever fantasies her love-starved mind had come up with, they could wait. She was never alone at school, constant eyes staring at her, only amplifying her fear of being caught in such a vulnerable state.

So she kept her messy heart to herself, because after all, she had reputations to preserve. Her heart remained in the cage of her chest, and her secrets remained in sanctuary of her heart. She won’t let them have the love that was only reserved for him.

So come inside and be with me, alone with me

Alone, with me alone

If you would let me give you pinky promise kisses

He always looked so… alone. Not lonely, but truly alone, isolated, lost within the walls of his mind. It was a selfish thought really, but she wished they could be alone together. She wished she could shut every other person out of his life—hers too, so they could finally be everything to each other, finally depend on each other in the most pure way. If only he could promise to preserve her delicate heart forever, and kiss her as a declaration of his love, only then would she be fulfilled.

Then I wouldn't have to scream your name

Atop of every roof in the city of my heart

He sat, bathing in the golden yellow sunlight with an indifferent expression on his face as he scribbled down the answers to the questions in the textbook. He was absolutely captivating. Just the way he acted, his personality, his existence, seemed to effortlessly reel her in—as if his heart held the missing piece of hers. Because, in a way, it did.

She loved him so much it hurt, and when she saw him it felt like someone had poured liquid gold into her arteries. She tried to analyse her feelings for a moment, but all she felt was the desire to scream how she loved him from atop a skyscraper just so her ‘silly little crush’ would feel valid.

If I could see you

Once more to see you

She tried to focus on her work, but the attempt was next to impossible now her love had begun to blossom in her chest like blood on white cloth. God, when had she let herself become so hopelessly enthralled with him? What had started as a simple desire to gain that bit more attention, had spiralled into so, so much more. He had these walls built around him, and she yearned to see the side of him he hid. She desperately wanted to be his favourite, the one person he trusts, his lover—she just wanted to feel his equally returned love. If she could see him, she’d be the happiest girl on the planet.

So she glanced once more, to try and truly see him, and if her friends noticed the blush tainting her porcelain skin, they didn’t bring it up.
