It was supposed to be easy.
…
It was supposed to work.
…
He wasn’t supposed to be seen.
However, Azzy just had to wake up early on that one day. The plan was simple: Climb to the top. Don’t ever look back. Feel the wind. Freedom. Unfortunately, Asriel wanted to see the sunrise that morning. He saw Kris on the roof. That’s when the plan went south. Kris pretended they were avoiding going to school to avoid suspicion. It wouldn’t be the first time, nor the weirdest.
Azzy dropped it and dragged Kris to school. The whole time, he was lecturing Kris about why they should stop trying to escape school, but Kris wasn’t paying attention. They just… stared. Their grip was tighter than ever before, hurting immensely. Azzy tried to ignore it, but it was hard. He decided to just drop it for now. Kris was probably just tired… right?
Well Kris was very tired. They had stayed up late planning, and then woke up very early so they wouldn’t get found. We all know how that went.
However that was nowhere close to the reason Kris wasn’t responding. Asriel had no clue, but Kris wasn’t trying to skip school that day. They were about to make it so they’d never go there ever again. They hadn’t planned anything for if they got caught, so he just went with Azzy’s thought process.
Unfortunately, Asriel isn’t stupid. He had suspicions that Kris wasn’t okay, and this event raised them further. Kris had never gotten up so early to hide, and unknown to Kris, Asriel saw them by the edge.
“Hey Kris? You uh… you good?” Asriel tentatively asked. He was getting more and more worried by the second because as nonverbal as Kris got, they never went this despondent.
Kris gave no sign that they heard him. He just… held Asriel’s hand and didn’t let go. As the older brother, Asriel had a choice. He could either follow Toriel’s request and take Kris to school or try to find out what was wrong and skip school.
He chose the latter.

“Well then, 2 hot chocolates?” The Diner waitress confirmed.
“Yeah, that’d be great, thanks.” Asriel replied, slightly distracted. His mind was almost all on Kris right now. Almost nothing could break that.
“Here, on the house today.” The waitress said kindly as she handed him the hot chocolates.
“Wha- are you sure? I’m sure I can pay for it” Asriel says, suddenly snapped out of his worried daze. His expression changes from surprise to confusion as she softly chuckled.
“There you are.” She says “You seem a bit distracted today, what’s up?” She asks, curiosity blazing in her eyes.
“It’s just… Kris. They were on the roof today, well before sunrise. They seemed off on the way to school so I decided to bring them here instead. I know they normally hides in weird places to avoid school, but my brain can’t help to wander into… darker places” Asriel explains hesitantly. His entire figure is stiff with stress and worry.
“… I see. That is quite worrying, but with you taking care of then, I’m sure they’ll be okay. Now go on, don’t let me keep you! I hope things go well!” The waitress says, her joyful side coming out again.
Asriel takes the hot chocolates and goes back to Kris. They spend the whole day talking, and end up laughing at the end. Asriel never learned what really was supposed to happen, but Kris should be fine by the time that he has to leave for college, right?
… right..?
