Work Text:
Go on a school trip they said, it’ll be fun they said.
It's basically an adventure Mom said, at least you get the day off school Mama said.
Nothing but wretched lies.
At this point she would rather be in school. If she had to listen to one more old man explain how the Gods formed the world and how The Mayor set the foundations, so help her she would commit an Olympic level acrobatic pirouette off the damn handle and out the window of this Gods forsaken museum. She knew the others were feeling the same, one glance at their faces was more than enough to confirm this, it was the curse of being the children of the Gods she supposed.
The young troll wouldn't be going down without a fight though, she had the perfect plan to spice up the day and it would begin by absconding the fuck out of this assembly hall with her boys.
If luck was on her side, and it normally was, no one would even notice their absence from the assembly hall. The three of them had taken an otherwise empty row near the back of the hall, her plan couldn't have an easier start if she wanted it to.
One fake yawn was all it took to get their attention, once she had it she threw her thumb in the direction of the exit before getting up and stealthy making her way towards the door, knowing full well it would only be a matter of time before they would follow.
Soft footsteps, an indication of Tavros, followed by the worried almost silent cursing from her goodie two shoes who is reluctantly tagging along. A smile tugged on her lips they might have been brought together because of their parents but she truly did adore her boys.
A couple more stealthy paces and one slowly opened door later and they were in the clear. Once the trio had begun to move down the hallway Vrissy gave a satisfied stretch. “Easier than taking candy from a grub, nice work boys.” she flashed them a fanged grin that they echoed with small smiles of their own.
“What's the plan then?” Harry asked, clearly nervous about getting caught if they hang out too close to the lecture hall. Vrissy thought for a moment, she honestly hadn’t really thought that far ahead, at the present moment her plan consisted of:
Step 1: Abscond from the boring hall
Step 2: ????????
Step 3: Fun and adventure
“I’ve got it all figured out, just trust me, Harry.” She winked at him, delighting in his blush, she didn't have a plan but that was fine, they didn't need to know that.
“You don't have a plan, do you.” Tavros interjects; she shoots him a glare and sticks her tongue out at his satisfied smirk. “If you really need me to hold your hand and give you a step by step of my brilliant plan like a baby then I will. We’re going to get out of the museum and have fun outside, unsupervised. This beachside town won't know what hit them. So either way, we’re having fun today.”
The trio turn a corner only to be sent crashing to the ground by a rush of white and black. “Who on Earth C!?”
A black tail caught their eyes first, followed by matching dog ears sticking out of short white hair. The person that ran into them appeared to be a private schoolgirl around their own age, if the strange tie blazer and short combo was anything to go on. Neither Vrissy or any of them for that matter had ever seen another person aside from Auntie Jade with actual canine features in real life before, in hindsight since their parents helped make the world it would make sense that some would end up with some features from the others Gods. A er all Vrissy herself was said to be a carbon copy of one of their old friends, a Goddess of Luck, who died in the final battle.
Not a particularly lucky God in Vrissys opinion but it was a notion best kept to herself.
It's just that none of them had seen this particular feature before.
It honestly left them all a little shocked.
The other kid didn't seem to share the same bewilderment, perhaps not knowing that they were the sons and daughter of the very Gods themselves, honestly that would be kind of refreshing.
They just sat there rubbing their head in pain before they attempted to get back up, seemingly ready to continue their sprint down the hallway even if it meant leaping over the others.
The trio were pulled out of their shock when a large hand plucked the dog-eared girl from their line of site and into the air, leaving her to kick her legs fruitlessly as her hands grapple with the man's arm as he held her form the collar of her shit.
“Got ya, ya lousy runaway.” The man said gruffy, before the others shot to their feet with a chorus of shouts, an instinctive urge to protect one of their own.
“Hey! What do you think you’re doing!?”
“Unhand her!”
“This is attempted kidnapping! Put her down, now!”
The guard took a step back, still holding the girl by the scruff, her dog ears flattened against her white hair, mouth turned up in a snarl at the man still holding her captive. Clearly if her arms were longer, she would have already punched him in the face.
“Whoa, chill out kids, I’m Museum security.”
“And a child abductor!” Harry shouted as the others pulled the girl free and held her close, getting in between the girl and the security officer. They could at least slow the guy down if the girl decided to make a run for it.
“What?! No, I'm not! I just-” the man sighed and dragged a hand down his face, “Listen kids, we got word that the boarding school nearby had a runaway and I just found this kid who no one had seen before, wearing a boarding school uniform, creeping round the museum, I’m just going to take them to reception and call the school to come pick them up.” The four kids exchanged quick looks, the outsider seeming to plead with them through ruby eyes.
“Well, you got the wrong kid.” Vrissy says confidently, “This is our friend, she's part of our group! You cant just grab people beacuse of their fashion sense!”
“Then why was she running? And why haven't I seen her around before.”” the guard accused not buying the act.
“Oh I don't know, it could be cause I creepy man was chasing her!” Vrissy hissed back.
“Yeah, we’re on a field trip form out of town, surely you saw some of our classmates come in before. If you think for a moment, you’ll notice you haven't seen any of us before.” Tavros added as Harry nodded crossing his arms. The guard was looking increasingly unsure of his stance, not wanting to be labelled a child abductor, he begins to weigh his options.
“If you still insist, she's who you're looking for we can get our teacher, and you can explain to her how you chased our friend and assaulted her.”
The scales tipped and the guard stuttered out an apology before fleeing the scene.
There was a beat of silence between the group in wake of the guard's hasty exit.
“Thanks.” the stranger said softly from their spot behind them, it was small, a barely coherent mumble but it was genuine. The group smiled.
“No problem, that guy needed to learn that he couldn't just manhandle random kids like some kind of freak.” Vrissy huffed, hands on hips, the girl smirked at that and fixed her rumpled clothes. “Yeah, I’m just lucky that he was stupid enough not to demand the teacher.”
“You and us both.” Harry sighed, causing the other blonde to spare him a confused glance. Tavros smile and scratched his cheek. “We, uh, kind of also snuck away.”
“Yeah, the school trip was one hell of a snooze fest so we’re bailing. We’re were acutally just about to leave, so-” Vrissy smile and then tilted her head. “care to join us on the adventure... umm?”
“Yiffy. And yeah, sure. After all what would the teacher say if I lost my group a second time.” Yiffany smile with a shrug, the others beamed back. They began to walk back down the hallway Yiffy had come from.
“Alright gang! Let's head out, to adventure!” Vrissy exclaimed.
“You still don't know where we’re going do you.”
“Tavros if you don't shut your damn mouth.”
The group left the museum in a chorus of laughter and friendly jabs.
It seemed that luck was on their side yet again as there was a fair not that far from the museum, close to one of the many beaches.
“Now this is what I’m talking about.” Vrissy smiled as they headed towards the entrance of the fairground.
“Do you plan to sneak us all in or something? If so I don't think walking through the front door would be a wise way to do it.” Tavros asked, Vrissy looked back at him confused, “Why would I need to do that?” Tavros pointed at a nearby sign.
‘Fair entry ticket - $3
Ride tokens - $5 for 10’
“Aww what!”
“Hmm looks like the fair is out the question then.” harry sighed before Yiffy flashed them all a cheeky smile, holding up a rather large wallet. “Today's activities are on me gang, as thanks for the save back there.”
“Hold up, thats real nice but we cant make you pay for-”
“Oh, I’m not paying. The guard I stole the wallet from will be treating us today.” Yiffy smile grew as Vrissy laughed and wrapped an arm around her shoulder “Now where have you been all my life Yiffy! I could have used a competent partner in crime!” Harry sighed knowing that protesting at this point would be fruitless and besides they would just end up using the money without him so he might as well join in on the fun at the expense of a shitty guard.
Yiffy paid for their tickets and a hand full of tokens for the rides and off they went.
The fairground was fairly simple, the same old looking stalls of rigged games, greasy and sugary foods and the rides that might have seen better days 10 years ago. The group had stopped Infront of the largest ride, a rollercoaster called ‘Death on wheels’
“I am NOT going on that.”
“Cmon Harry, you won't leave me in cart all on my own, would you?” Vrissy baited batting her eyelashes at him, the blonde rubbed his head before pointing at the surely not legal roller-coaster “V, if we go on that shoddily constructed death trap we will die, no doubt about it. Then someone will have to inform the teachers who’ll tell our parents and then Tavs’ Mom will have to fix us up and we will be in soooo much trouble!” the tall roller-coaster creaked ominously in response to the allegation and continued to sway slightly in the light breeze, having only seemed to emphasize Harrys point that it was an unstable hunk of junk.
“If you have someone that can fix you from literal death then I don't see what the problem is, y'all shouldn't be scared of anything.” Yiffy shrugged, Vrissy nodded in agreement though she had never thought of it that way herself she might start, Tavros hummed in response “It's less the dying and more the lecture after the fact that I’m worried about.”
“Guys, come on. Don't do this to me, I can't believe you’re letting the theatre kid be the voice of reason here. Tav you’re supposed to be your mom's perfect good boy son or whatever you should be avoiding this dangerous thing.” Harry whined.
“Technically most kids forced to act ‘perfect’ by their parents often rebel, get into lots of trouble and end up with a bunch of issues.” Tavros interjected, earning a hell yeah and high five from Yiffany for their somewhat similar circumstances it seemed. They hadn't questioned Yiffys past but if she's sympathizing with Tavros of all people it couldn't be all guns and roses.
Harry groaned into his hands “Fine! Fine, I’ll go on the damned thing! But just so you know if this turns out like the same as the time we road that flying machine off the roof did then I’m cursing you all for every second I’m dead and you all owe me chocolate when we’re revived.” he pointed an accusing finger at them all as they smiled back, Vrissy grabbed his hand and kissed his cheek.
“Fair enough, let's go!”
One short queue and an extremely dubious ride later and the group left the roller-coaster with shaky legs and varying levels of nausea.
“I think my life just flashed before my eyes... and it was fuckin bullshit.” Yiffy whined, head in her hands as they made their way to a somewhat secluded arear so they could all brace themselves against a wall and wallow in their motion sickness judgement free.
“I told you it was a bad idea; I told you all!” Harry groaned from his hunch, “Okay, okay. You were right Harry, next time we’ll listen to you I swear it.” Vrissy said with a hand over her eyes in an attempted to stop the world from spinning.
“I know those are empty words but I I’ll take it!” Harry smiled softly, head resting against the wall.
“I don't even want to think about what we looked like on the photo.” Tavros sighed, somehow the most stable of the group with only the slightest of nausea and aching hands from his white-knuckle grip on the safety bar. He was also pretty sure that if he rolled up the sleeve of his cardigan there would be indents from Yiffanys nails and with the way they stung some might have even broken the skin a little.
“It had a camera!?” the others exclaimed, their self-pity forgotten as they headed to the booth to see the photo. “I was pretty sure I saw something flash but honestly I just figured it was the light at the end of the tunnel.” Harry shrugged as they gathered round the image on the screen.
A beat of silence as they took in their expressions.
Followed by full belly laughter from the group.
“Hahaha! What the hell! Why-why do you look like that!?”
“Me!? H-have you seen your face? Hahaha you look like you’re inches away from a leaf blower! Haha"
“Hahaha ow owow I'm getting a stitch!”
“We have to get it! I need this in my life!”
“Photo man give me 4 keychains stat!” Yiffy finally controlled her laughter long enough to shove money at the man in question who happily complied.
The four continued to giggle at the pictures throughout the rest of their time at the fair.
Walking through a shitty haunted house while they pretended to be real-estate agents about to put the house on the market, playing eye spy while eating candyfloss on the Ferris wheel, having such an epic bumper car battle that it resulted in their immediate removal and ban from the bumper cars. The four continued hopping from ride to ride for as long as their tokens would allow.
Once the token well had run dry, they moved on from the fair to meander across the soft sand of the seashore.
They found a patch clear of seaweed and far enough from other visitors to be cozy. Vrissy took a seat, feeling the warm sand between her fingers as she watched the waves crash a few feet away. The sand and sun were warm, and the soft breeze was filled with salt and echos of joy.
It all felt very serine, isolating in a good way, like there was no one in the world but the four of them.
There was something almost fated about the feeling like it was always meant to come down to them and only them.
Vrissys gaze moved across the water to her squad, Yiffany was skipping stones with a surprisingly equal amount of success and failure, Harry was nearby shifting through the sand looking for seashells or sea glass either way he was being stupidly adorable, and she couldn't help the fond smile at her matesprite. Soft footsteps in the sand behind her indicated that Tavros was back from his ice cream run, Vrissy looked up and took one of the ice cream cones that was held in her direction, the others seemed to have noticed Tavros return and rushed over for their sweet treat.
“Keep the change Tav, it wasn't mine to begin with.” Yiffy smiled as Tavros tried to hand the money back to her, they went back and forth for a bit before Tavros relented and pocketed the change. After that they ate their ice creams in silence, Vrissy couldn't believe how well they all seemed to fit, even despite Yiffanys short time with them, it was like she’d slotted right into a space that was made for her, one that Vrissy didn't even know was there till she filled it.
This wonderful moment of silence as they ate their ice creams on the sand seemed to last forever.
“I think it's time to go guys...” Tavros said somewhat suddenly, they all looked out at the sun, pass the waves and with a quiet disappointment as they knew he was right. They finished their ice creams, shook as much sand as they could from themselves and began the unfortunately short walk back to the museum. For three of them it meant a coach trip home left with the void of a friend, for one it meant being alone once more.
The sun was getting low on the horizon as the museum was now in sight, the group could see the school bus they came on beginning to fill up with students, their time together had come to an end. Though it was short they could all feel the tightness in their chests as they subconsciously slowed their walk to their final destination, anything that could prolong the bittersweet goodbye that was waiting for them there.
“We could always try and sneak you onto the bus.” Vrissy half heartly suggested, knowing that it would be an extreme gamble but willing to try if Yiffy agreed.
They didn't.
“It's alright, you guys need to sneak in already, it’ll be impossible trying to do it we me.” She smiled “Cause I don't know if you’ve noticed but I do have ears and a tail. I’ll probably just continue hanging around here or the beach till the school give up and call my mum, she’ll find me in an instant, unfortunately, but I’ll finally be free of that shitty school and once again sent to another hopefully not as shitty school.” Yiffy frowned with a shrug, this seemed to be a somewhat common occurrence, meaning their chance of meeting again was slim.
“We can still chat if you change schools though, you have a pesterchum account, right?” Tavros asked hopefully. “Yeah, I can't get on it very often cause the teachers are constantly on the lookout for phones to confiscate but they haven't caught mine yet.”
“That's rough buddy.” Harry says, only to mutter an ouch when he receives a punch in the arm from Yiffany with a smile. Vrissy rolled her eyes and got her phone out, after confirmation of the username from Yiffy, she had successfully added them all to a group chat so the boys could later add Yiffany to their friend list if they wanted, and they would.
adamantGriftress [AG] added thespiansGlamor [TG],glutinousGymnast [GG] and lycanthropyAnarchy [LA] to the group chat
adamantGriftress [AG] changed the group chat name to [Omega Kids]
The trio looked at Vrissy with mixed levels of confusion and amusement.
“Omega kids?” Harry asked, “Better not be a joke about my ears and name V, I've bitten people for less” Yiffy threatened jokingly.
Vrissy flashed them a fanged grin “Don't worry Yiffy, we all know this group has two Alphas and it aint those losers, no offence Harry.” she blows him a kiss and returns Tavros eye roll with a wink. “Honestly the name just feels right.” the group seems to think it over.
“Yeah, its growing on me.”
“I like it.”
“Omega kids for the win.”
They said their goodbyes, the trio easily blending in with the crowd of students waiting for the bus. They took their seats at the back and waved out the window to Yiffany who was growing ever distant in the carpark, only stopping when they could no longer see her on the horizon.
They sat back with small smiles, hands on phones as they buzzed with a new message.
lycanthropyAnarchy [LA] began pestering the group chat [Omega Kids]
