Work Text:
It had been around 4 months since Guest had reappeared in his time. 4 months of things slowly getting worse between him and Daisy. Of tension building the more he avoids the truth and the more she digs for it. Of him growing to dread coming home because he knows that she can see right through him even with their time apart.
“Guest?” He snapped back into focus, looking up from the meal he hadn’t touched. “Yeah, honey?” He gave an attempt at a smile, but he knew she’d see through it. “You know you can tell me anything..” She began and he already felt himself getting irritated- then guilty. This was his wife, it was understandable that she’d want to know what happened but still, he couldn’t tell her.
“I don’t remember, Daisy. Not anything proper.” When had he become like this? So- serious. Like he was still there, still on the battlefield, still being hunted.
“There has to be something-” he stood up, he didn’t have the energy for this, not right now, “I need some fresh air” he muttered as he grabbed his jacket, trying to put it on before Daisy grabbed his arm and stopped him.
“Guest 1337, stop right now.” He stopped, though refused to look at her. If he did, he might crumble “We need to talk about this, we can’t just keep- ignoring this!” He knew that already. Didn’t mean he was willing to, “It’s been four months. Four months of feeling like I am walking on eggshells because I don’t know what happened to you. Four months of me watching you clearly struggling yet refusing to talk to me.”
He was silent. He didn’t know what to say- God that was pathetic. He didn’t know how to comfort his wife, what kind of a husband was he? Unable to be strong when she needed him to.
“Please. Whenever you look at me all I can see is sadness in your eyes- I know you’re hiding something from me” He was hiding so much. But he had to- he couldn’t risk it. Couldn’t burden her, either. Not with this. “..Can you at least look at me?”
Guest is silent, unmoving for a moment before he finally looks at his wife and- god. He can feel his heart shatter into a million pieces. He needs to leave- he needs to get out of here before he gives in and tells her everything, before he breaks down and she has to pick up the pieces.
She looks ready to say something but he doesn’t give her a chance to speak. “I’m sorry, I can’t.”
For a second, there was nothing. Then, slowly she let go of his arm, taking a step back and looking.. unreadable. “Okay” She didn’t yell, didn’t cry- just… Accepted it.
He wished she did yell, cry, anything but this- accepting what he had become. A mess. He wanted to let the wall holding everything in fall down, wanted to do more than offer meaningless apologies, wanted to be able to be there for her but- he couldn’t.
Couldn’t do anything beyond watch that distance grow greater and greater.
