Chika is reading a book about herbs in the classroom before the class begins. Yesterday evening her mom berated her for not recognizing two herbs so she really should study them more.
"What are you reading," someone asked.
Chika looked to her right to see a brown-haired girl with a bob and purple markings on her face. Her name was Rin Nohara if Chika remembered correctly.
"It's about medicinal herbs," Chika replied.
Rin nodded before changing the subject. Chika wondered why Rin was talking to her. It’s not like Chika had ever even attempted to talk to her classmates.
"Isn't it amazing that Kakashi is graduating already," Rin asked with adoration in her voice.
Chika’s hand clenched into a fist. Instead of admiration, she was annoyed that someone was better than her in their class. And Kakashi graduating only after a year in the academy was pushing her on the edge. However, Chika didn't want to come off as mean so she plastered a fake smile on her face.
"I know right," Chika said.
Rin kept on rambling, beaming. It only irritated Chika further.
"What's so special about Kakashi anyway," someone asked. He had black, spiky hair and black eyes. I think his name is Obito Uchiha, if I remember right, Chika thought.
He was standing beside Rin, pouting. Finally, someone agreed with her! It felt like all the girls in her class were fawning over Kakashi.
After school Chika was over, Chika walked home still reading her book. After she had eaten, she helped her mom with their apothecary. Chika was crushing herbs at the counter when she saw an elderly woman approach with Obito.
“Hello dear. Could you get me something for my cough,” the woman asked. She must be Obito’s grandma.
“Oh yeah, sure. Hold on a bit,” Chika said and went to the back to get the herbs.
After a bit of browsing, she picked out a few herbs and brought them to her mom.
“Mom, these ones are for treating cough, right,”
“Yeah, that’s right,” mom said and packed the herbs Chika had gathered. Chika is happy that she remembered correctly this time. They walked to the counter together, mom holding a hand at Chika’s upper back.
“I see your daughter is helping you already with the apothecary,” the elderly woman said with a toothy smile.
“Yeah, Chika is already starting to get the hang of it,” mom said smiling and handed over the bag of herbs.
After they had left Chika saw Kakashi training alone in a nearby training ground. He was wearing his new forehead protector.
“Chika, let’s close the shop and eat dinner,” mom said.
“Okay mom!”
