Chapter Text
Griphook unlocked the door and a huge cloud of green smoke came billowing out, and as it cleared, I gasped. Inside were mounds of gold coins. Columns of silver. Heaps of little bronze Knuts.
“All yours,” smiled Hagrid.
So much money and it all belongs to me? It felt like God himself noticed and blessed me. All this time I was listening to the Dursleys' complaints on how much I cost them to keep? And there had been a small fortune belonging to me, buried deep under London. I couldn’t believe it, it simply made no sense to me.
Hagrid piled some into a bag and handed it to me. The weight of it settled heavily in my hands– my own money. The thought consumed me, dulling everything else, that is until Hagrid clapped his enormous hands right in front of my face, snapping me back to reality.
“Are yeh alright, Harry?” The giant had a worried look attached to his face. I quickly nodded, hiding the money in the pocket of my jeans.
“Might as well get yer uniform,” said Hagrid, nodding toward Madam Malkin’s Robes for All Occasions.
“Listen, Harry, would yeh mind if I slipped off fer a pick-me-up in the Leaky Cauldron? I hate them Gringotts carts.” He did still look a bit sick, so I nodded again.
I pushed the heavy door open and the bell on it rang. I saw a squat, smiling witch dressed all in mauve, I guessed she was Madam Malkin.
“Hogwarts, dear?” she said, when I started to speak.
“Got the lot here — another young man being fitted up just now, in fact.”
In the back of the shop, a boy with a pale, pointed face was standing on a footstool while a second witch pinned up his long black robes.
Madam Malkin pointed to a stool next to him. I went to stand where she pointed. She slipped a long robe over my head, and began to pin it to the right length.
“Hello,” said the boy beside me, “Hogwarts, too?”
I looked at him as he voiced his question. He had short, blonde hair which suited his pale skin. And crystal clear, blue eyes. With looks like that, he could be the next Hollywood star. I suddenly remembered that I was asked a question and nodded in response.
“Good…my father’s next door buying my books and Mother’s up the street looking at wands,” said the boy. He had a bored, drawling voice. “Then I’m going to drag them off to look at racing brooms. I don’t see why first years can’t have their own. I think I’ll bully Father into getting me one and I’ll smuggle it in somehow.”
Brooms? Like for sweeping the floor? Are there races on sweeping the floor in Hogwarts? The boy continued chatting, and it was quite interesting hearing the blonde rumble about brooms. “Have you got your own broom?” the boy continued.
I shaked my head. My gaze dropped. I think the boy noticed as he tried to reassure me
“Ah, don’t worry about that, you wouldn’t need it this year anyway. ” The boy sighed “ Tho I’m quite disappointed that first years don't get to play Quidditch, do you play?”
I shake my head again.
“I do — Father says it’s a crime if I’m not picked to play for my House next year, and I must say, I agree. Know what House you’ll be in yet?”
And I force myself to shake my head again. I kinda feel ashamed for not knowing anything. Tho it's not my fault, is it?
“Ah, well that’s alright. No one knows in which house they’ll end up in. but I personally hope I’m in Slytherin.”
Slythe- what?
“What other houses are there?” I asked curiously, trying to keep the conversation going.
“Well, there’s Slytherin, Grifindor, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuf, why?”
The boy turned to look at me. And I have to admit, his profile was pretty but now I see his whole face, he looks like an angel.
“No reason”
I smile and wave the hand in front of my face, dismissing the question.
“Is he with you?”
the boy suddenly made a face and pointed at Hagrid through the window. The Giant was standing there, grinning at me and pointing at two large ice creams to show he couldn’t come in.
“Yeah,” I said quietly.
“Oh, then where are your parents?” The boy asked, tilting his head to the side.
“Dead” I answered as quietly as before, my voice started to tremble a bit.
“I-i’m sorry to hear that.” They stood there, the room filled with an awkward silence until the boy gasped
“Merlin's beard, I forgot to introduce myself” He laughed
“I'm Draco Malfoy, and you?”
Before I could answer, Madam Malkin spooked again,
“That’s you done, my dear,”
“thank you” I smiled, hopping off the footstool.
“Well, I’ll see you at Hogwarts, I suppose,” said Draco and I left
