Phoenix

Summary:

A chance at redemption. Will he succeed?

Chapter Text

Hyperlaser packed his personal items into a fairly large backpack-clothes, trinkets, tools he’d use for the upkeep of his gear and helmet…

Subspace had walked up to him earlier today, when he was grabbing a morning coffee.

He was holding a paper.

“You’ve officially reached the minimum work time required to retire from Blackrock,” The scientist had began, holding the contract out for Hyperlaser to see. “Which means we’re legally obligated to let you retire whenever you want to. But! If you stay, we’ll-”

Hyperlaser didn’t listen to the rest of his speech, grabbing the contract and bringing it closer to his mask to read the fine print.

‘If any field worker does (survives) their job for 10 years, they’re allowed to choose to retire.’

Ah.

Subspace finished talking, looking at him expectantly.

“So..?”

“I’ll be leaving later today.” Hyperlaser responded in a neutral tone.

“WHAT!? But-the benefits! Have you even been listening to me!?” Subspace shrieked, reaching out to grab the other demons arms. Hyperlaser took a step back to avoid this. “You’re our best hitman! You can’t just-”

“I can. That’s what our entire conversation has been about, yeah?”

Hyperlaser did not pay mind to any of Subspace’s following ramblings, heading back to his room to pack up.

…As he finished stuffing all of the items he deemed important into his backpack, looking through his quarters now to find his old pet carrier.

As he finally found what he was looking for under his bed, he heard insistent meowing from behind him. He turned around, still crouching, to face his dear cat.

“Princess.” He spoke softly, a tone of awe in his voice. “We’re leaving now.”

The cat didn’t seem to react.

She didn’t know the language after all.

Hyperlaser sighed, grabbing Princess with one hand to place her into the pet carrier and closing the door of the carrier.

He put his backpack on-it was suprisingly light considering he’d put all of his belongings into it. Perhaps he didn’t have too many items after all.

He retrieved his phone and stored it safely into his pocket before finally grabbing his trusty gear.

There. He was done. There was nothing else of value for him left inside the house.

He shouldered the door open, not bothering to even close the door to his past home behind him as he walked out. He ignored the suprised murmurs of other Blackrock workers around him as he headed for the main door, finally stepping out of Blackrock perimeters.

Freedom at last. It felt great.

He placed the pet carrier down between his legs, ignoring Princess’s soft mrow as he pulled out his phone with his now free hand. He called a taxi. He knew where he was going.

His drinking buddy had told him that he could come over to his if he ever needed any shelter.

He placed his phone back in his pocket and grabbed the pet carrier again.

The taxi finally arrived. He opened the door and carefully stepped inside, sitting down i  the back and setting the pet carrier down on the seat next to himself.

“Where do ya’ wanna go?” The demon manning the taxi asked.

“Thieves’ den.” Hyperlaser responded.

“Got it.”

As the taxi began driving off, he leaned back. He relaxed slightly, watching the very familiar Blackrock HQ slowly disappear from sight.
