Spinning out

Summary:

Caitlyn is one of the best figure skaters in Piltover and Vi is on the best ice hockey captains in Zaun.

Notes:

First time publishing my fanfics that I write in my spare time, please be kindddd.

I haven't written stories in YEARS so I am a little bit rusty.

Chapter Text

The crowd cheered, whooping and hollering at the previous skater who just finished her program.

Caitlyn let out a long breath, mentally preparing herself for the most difficult jump she has ever done. A triple Lutz. It was always a triple Flutz, for some reason she just couldn’t get that last rotation or her left foot would drop into an inside edge and taking off incorrectly or just simply popping her jumps.

She was at Regionals, the step to compete before Sectionals and this was something she needed to win to go onto the next stage. To bring home the trophy and gold medal for Piltover. To honour her family name, Kiramman. To honour her parents, Cassandra and Tobias Kiramman, retired pair skaters, who never had the chance to go to Sectionals due to getting pregnant with her. This was going to change her life if she wins Regionals. She needed it, desperately.

“Please welcome our last contestant of the evening for our long program, Caitlyn Kiramman! Skating to Skyfall by Adele.” Said the announcer.

Caitlyn’s heart pounded as she skated into the centre of the ice, doing 2 laps to greet her audience first and then finally getting into position in front of the judges. The pleased looks from the judges so far made Caitlyn feel good, knowing her costume was hitting all the artistic points she needed to get to win.

The crowd became silent, everyone seating themselves down to watch the program of Caitlyn Kiramman. Music began to play and this was the part where Caitlyn could lose herself in the moves, in the music, ignoring all the doubts and negative thoughts she had during that day. She didn’t really like the song, but anything to please her mum. She picked it out for her.

The sounds of her blades gliding and cutting into the ice was everything. This was the thing that she would always listen out for when she’s skating on an empty rink. Alone, ice freshly cut and creating beautiful artworks with her edgework and figures. Her coach always complimented her on her skating style, and she would always feel so shy about it. It was incredibly beautiful to watch and even the younger skaters would come up to her and say how much they aspire to skate like her.
Now it was time for the triple Lutz.

Caitlyn held her left arm in front of her as she prepared to tap her toe into the ice to catapult herself into the jump. She took a deep breath. Inhale. And as she exhaled, she launched herself into the air, holding her breath as she pulled her arms in tight to perfect the triple lutz.

Her coach, Greyson, and Cassandra were stood at the side of the rink, holding onto each other and crossing their fingers as they watched her launch herself into the air. Cassandra counting each rotation as she spun. 1… 2…
THREE!

Everyone cheered the moment Caitlyn’s toe pick landed on the ice again, a clean and perfect landing and a PERFECT triple Lutz. A huge smile appeared on her lips, continuing the remaining minute of her program. She was absolutely thrilled. All the training and emotional drains she had gone through to finally be able to land her triple Lutz at Regionals. ‘Oh, I’m 100% going to Secti-’ She thought to herself but then…

Tripped.

Of course it was too good to be true. Of course, she had to trip and fall at the very last second of her program. As she got herself back up to end her program in front of the judges, she looked at one woman sat at the table, who looked back at her with despair. ‘Sorry…’ She mouthed to Caitlyn. Her face dropped from glee. She felt so defeated.

The crowd still cheered for her but after that small stumble, she didn’t feel accomplished whatsoever. Whatever proudness she felt about herself after landing her jump, it had disappeared like a wind blowing out the flames of a campfire.

She bowed to the judges, to her audience before skating off with tears welling up in her eyes and the feeling of her shattering into pieces.

“You did amaz-” Her coach began to say before Caitlyn snatched her skate guards out of her hands and fumbled around to attach them onto her blades, hopping towards the doors to the changing rooms.

“That was fucking shit, I fell!” Caitlyn growled.

“Language, Caitlyn! Oh, my goodness, I’m so sorry…” Cassandra looked at Greyson with an apologetic look on her face, who dismissed it with a little shake of her hand. She knew what Caitlyn was like when something doesn’t quite go the way she wanted it to go.

She stormed off to the changing rooms, wiping whatever tears tried to escape down her cheek with the back of her hand, pulling every door she walked through with so much force they would create a loud bang against the walls.

The moment she got to the room, she took a seat and began taking off her skates with so much anger, snapping one of her laces which only fuelled her anger even more.

The door opened. Cassandra.

“Not right now, mother…” She muttered, slipping her boots off and chucking them to the floor, without a care in the world and began putting on her shoes to sit at the Kiss and Cry to see what awful scores she got.

“Caitlyn, you did great out there. You must watch your toe pick and slow down towards the end, you rush things.” Cassandra stated, trying to comfort her daughter but also not really? Caitlyn scoffed and shoved all of her skating stuff into her bag. “You landed your triple Lutz, that’s still an accomplishment.”

“I really don’t care if I landed it or not, I’m not going to Sectionals, that’s all I got out of this.” She responded dryly and a little bit harshly. “And, for your information, I didn’t even trip on my toe pick. There was a bump in the ice that tripped me, thank you very much. Or do you think I’m just incompetent?”

Cassandra was taken aback by her comment and had nothing to say. She froze there in the room, hand on her chest like she was about to have a heart attack by the way her daughter just spoke to her as Caitlyn barged past her and out of the room with her bag to meet her coach at the Kiss and Cry.

That was a horrible program, everything was horrible. She hated every single minute of that day. And sitting at the Kiss and Cry will only make things worse. She wanted the day to end so she could go home and cry in her bed.

She came 4th place in her program. Although her coach was happy, she sure as hell wasn’t. She only knew how it felt to win every competition ever. 1st place, the odd 2nd place here and there but 4th place!! She found that diabolical. All she was going to get was a pat on the back and some flowers. Not even a shiny medal. What a waste of a day.

-

The drive home was awkward. Caitlyn had her hand on her forehead, resting her elbow on the window as she closed her eyes for the entirety of the ride. She was exhausted to say the least, it was an extremely long day of just warming up, exercising, practicing and preparing herself for her competition. But to make a silly mistake? It felt like the end of the world for her.

Cassandra stayed quiet for the whole ride back to their homes in Piltover, dropping Caitlyn off at her apartment first before driving home. Saying anything at this point would escalate very quickly.

Their relationship wasn’t always like this. Although, Caitlyn had always felt pressured to be the best out of everyone at her home rink because of her last name but also because her parents never got to go to Sectionals, and she felt like this was their moment to receive some sort of medal even if it had Caitlyn’s name written all over it.

The moment Caitlyn stepped foot into her room and the door shut quietly behind her, she slid down it, holding her face in her hands and cried her eyes out. She was so disappointed in herself. It was like the world knew how she felt too, the clouds became darker, changing the moon lighting in her room to a miserable blue, heavy rain pattering onto her windows and thunder rumbling every time a sob escaped her lips.

She knew in order to get her gold medal for Regionals, she was going to have to work ten times harder than what she was already working at now.

She pushed herself off the floor, wiping away whatever tears were left on her cheeks and walked into her en suite to wash away the remaining makeup she still had on and to just overall clean herself up from the mess of today. Once she had done her nightly routine, she laid herself under her covers, grabbing her phone to set an alarm for 4am, to have an extremely early morning skate, where the ice will have been barely touched and smooth.

A plan needed to be made, a whole new routine of training. Caitlyn was going to have to change everything.
Her eyes shut instantly once she had set her phone down on her night stand and soon enough she was fast asleep.

-

Vi was the captain of the Zaun Ice Hockey league. She had worked extremely hard to get that title and to be honest, she absolutely earned it. She was a great leader and an amazing team member. She deserved that title and everyone on her team knew that.

Vander was her coach, also her dad, but when it came to ice hockey, he didn’t go easy on her. He treated her like a team member, not just because he didn’t want everyone else to think he had favourites but because he wanted Vi to work hard. But he knew she would anyways.

Powder was the goalie. She had great precision and never failed to block any of the shots from the opposing team. She had great skill in that sense. Hand eye coordination was insane and no one could ever beat that.

The Zaun Ice Hockey team have brought home so many trophies. There was only one time where they lost a game when Powder completely lost her shit and started a fight with a girl on the opposite team and ended up being shoved in the box for the entirety of the game for aggression. No Powder on goalie meant the other team had a chance to rack up the scores to beat Zaun. And they did just that.

To this day, Powder still got teased for it by Vi, but sisters eh?

Vi was hard working captain, starting her training hours earlier than everyone else, running laps in the early hours of the day, going to the gym like her life absolutely depended on it. But the way her body looked in a vest after a long workout session. Lord have mercy, all the girls in that gym were drooling at the sight. She was probably the only reason some of them kept returning to the gym. Can you blame them? She was technically there every single day. Wiping her sweat with the hem of her shirt, showing off those steel abs and flashing the bottom of her back tattoo.

Vi had training, but figure skaters had the ice first today so she thought she would the gym early in the morning first before heading to the rink to toss some pucks around in the training room.

Every time she turned up to the rink with all of her gear, a blue-haired girl would always be the first on the ice. Alone in her flowy skirt and leotard and quiet music playing. Vi loved the way she skated across the ice. Sometimes she would watch from a distance when she was eating her lunch or taking a short breather. She was always on the ice and Vi barely ever saw her take any breaks.

Vi got shit for even watching any figure skater. All hockey players, male and female, hated the figure skating team. They were so uptight, rich, always had something horrible to say about the hockey players and always seemed so entitled about the ice. They followed the ruled like it was a crime to break them.
Vi did have some negative feelings towards the figure skaters because of how entitled they were. They were mostly from Piltover. They’d comment on the way the changing rooms would smell after the hockey team left for the day or whining about the deep cuts in the ice. Blah blah blah. Whining, whining, boohoo there’s a little deep cut in the ice.

She never heard any complaints from the blue-haired girl though. She was quiet, like a little mouse, coming and going at the same time every single day and didn’t speak much unless spoken too. Vi thought she was weird. But maybe that’s because she’s just loud.

This time, the blue-haired girl was there but earlier than she normally is. Vi would start her training at 7am, but she noticed the amount of skate marks on the ice as she walked around the rink to head to her changing room. It was getting pretty roughed up. She truly wondered how long she had been on the ice to cause the ice to be rough like that. The blue-haired girl skated over to the barrier to grab her water bottle but it fell in front of Vi, stopping her in her tracks. She leaned down and picked it up, locking eyes with the girl.

Oh my god, she is beautiful. Vi thought. Those bright blue marbles, staring into her soul. She felt like she could melt, right there on the spot.

Caitlyn grabbed the bottle from her hand with a gentle “thank you” and took a sip, breaking eye contact for just a second before looking at Vi again. She knew of Vi, how could she not know her. She was the captain of the Zaun hockey team after all. But she always steered clear of the team as she wanted nothing to do with the drama and bickering the figure skating team had with the hockey team. She had more important things to worry about. Like going to Sectionals.

Caitlyn set her bottle back down onto the edge of the barrier and was about to turn away to go back to skating again before Vi said, “Wait!”

She looked back, tucking her hair behind her ear. “How long have you been here for?” Asked Vi, genuinely wondering. Maybe she could get to know her for once.

“Why do you ask?” Caitlyn replied, turning to face her properly.

“Oh, I was just wondering since sometimes when you’re here, you’ve only just started on your warm ups.” Vi rubbed the back of her neck, smiling gently at Caitlyn.

“Oh.” Caitlyn wasn’t expecting small talk today as she thought she would be here alone for a couple of hours before all the other skaters would start pouring in. “I’ve been here since 5. Thought I would practice before people started coming in. Figure skaters get first ice today. My names Caitlyn, by the way. I don’t think we’ve ever spoken.”

Vi chuckled, she knew that. “Well, seems like you’ve done a great practice session already.” Referring to the skate marks on the ice. Caitlyn blushed at this, she never even noticed how much she had skated already. She smiled at Vi, letting out a soft thank you and looking down at her skates as she felt quiet shy, for some odd reason. “Names Vi but I’m sure you already knew that. I’ll let you get back to it, cupcake.” Vi winked as she continued her walk to the changing rooms, a cheeky smile on her face. Let’s just say, she was the most beautiful girl she had ever laid eyes on.

Caitlyn blushed at the nickname Vi just called her. Cupcake?! She shook her head and went back to skating, practicing her routine over and over again until the ice began to fill up with other skaters for practice.

-

It was around 4pm when Caitlyn was done with all of her on ice and off ice training. Hockey players had the ice from 12pm, so she practiced off ice for the next hours. Her coaching session today felt good too, cleaning up any rough parts of her routine, switching out her spins when they felt right to do so, and practising her jumps and also attempting her other jumps like her double axels.

She waved Greyson goodbye before walking to the changing rooms. Figure skaters and Hockey skaters shared the changing rooms. She was dreading the conversations she would overhear and sometimes be dragged into when she steps foot in there. Everyone would be in there at this time, hockey players having their dinner break before going back to training and figure skaters either packing up their stuff or preparing for off ice training. Caitlyn took a deep breath before stepping into the room. Arguments were already happening. This was great. Truly just what she needed.

“Your locker reeks of sweat, Powder. Aren’t you ashamed?” said one of the skaters.

“Your attitude stinks like shit but you don’t ever hear me complaining.” Powder snapped back. “Aren’t you ashamed of that?”

Hockey players snickered and patted Powder on her back. “Bet your mother is proud of the way you speak to other people.” The girl snapped back.

This made Powder so mad to the point she yanked off her training gear and stormed towards her before being stopped by Vi. “Oh, you’re gonna pay for that, you stupid bitch.” Powder growled. No one was allowed to talk about Vi’s and Powder’s mum. They all knew what had happened to their parents and the figure skaters knew it was their weakness in an argument.

“Hey, Kiramman! Heard you got 4th place in your gay figure skating competition!” A female hockey player, Sarah Fortune, snickered at her as Caitlyn grabbed her stuff from her locker, ignoring the horrible notes she would receive from the girls who were jealous of her status and her carrying the Kiramman name.

Vi nudged the girl with her elbow in the ribs, leaving her curled up in the corner, clutching onto her side. “Aren’t you gay?”

Caitlyn ignored whatever was said after Vi’s response to Sarah. Sarah was Vi’s friends with benefits thing, whatever the hell it is that they do, Caitlyn only overheard some of the other figure skaters talking about it.

As she closed her locker door, she was startled by the presence of Vi’s face on the other side of the locker door, staring at her with a soft smile and leaning against the locker next to hers. “Sorry about her, she’s just a hater. She’s also gay so I don’t know why she would say such a thing.” Vi said, looking into Caitlyn’s eyes.

Caitlyn blushed, accepting the apology. “Don’t worry about it, Vi.” She smiled softly at her, locking her locker and lifting her bag onto her shoulder. There was a brief moment of silence between the two of them. The bickering and snarky comments started to muffle around them as they looked at each other.

“Woah Vi! Didn’t know you had a liking for a figure skater! Aww, look at her. She’s scrawny, entitled and holds the Kiramman name all over her face.” Sarah looked straight at Caitlyn, smirking as she noticed the way Caitlyn averting her eyes from Vi’s and looking down at her hands. “Do you even eat, Kiramman?”

This was a sensitive topic for Caitlyn. Of course, no one other than her coach knew about her relationship with food. The other hockey players stopped talking and started whispering amongst each other as they scanned Caitlyn and her appearance. She was eating but her relationship with food was quite unhealthy. She glanced up at Vi. She was hoping she would stop all of this. What was she expecting? She’s a hockey player who probably actually hates her guts and is only speaking to her to taunt and pick at her. She let out a defeated sigh, readjusting her bag on her shoulder and mumbled a gentle bye to Vi before walking out of the room.

This whole situation started a huge debacle in the changing rooms, most of the figure skaters had Caitlyn’s back, except the ones who hated her guts. They still defended her though.

She hated the fact that she carried her family name, it meant that there would be a lot of high expectations from her. For other people to point it out, she hated everything about it.

Vi stared at Caitlyn’s back as she watched her leave the room. She sighed and looked at Sarah, frowning at her. “What was that for?”

Sarah shrugged, feeling quite proud of herself what she had said and flicked her luscious red hair behind her as she turned. “How about you meet me in the kit room and you can tell me what I did wrong?” She smirked and winked. Vi couldn’t be mad at her, she was hot after all and quite frankly, she couldn’t stay mad. She did exactly what Sarah had asked her to. The other skaters laughed, putting their index finger and middle fingers up to their lips and flicked their tongues whilst letting out fake and high-pitched moans. Vi and Sarah didn’t even bother to try and hide it.

Caitlyn walked over to the skate shop to drop off her skates to be sharpened, buying a new pair of skate laces and some extra tape to reapply the tap on the toes of her boots as they were extremely scuffed. Luckily, these were her training skates, she had a different pair for her competitions. Her gorgeous Edea Pianos. She stuck rhinestones to them in some areas, gorgeous blue rhinestones that catch the light when she skated. She loved those boots and she was so grateful for them when her dad got them for her for her 21st birthday.

“Hey Sprout! Needing to resharpen again?” Jayce was her brother in a way, she was an only child but Jayce was always there for her ever since she was a little tiny girl.

“Yes please, and some new laces for my other boots. I snapped them by accident yesterday after my competition…” Caitlyn responded, an embarrassed smile on her face after admitting to snapping her laces to Jayce. The number of times she had snapped her laces, Jayce couldn’t keep count anymore.

Jayce chuckled and grabbed a fresh pair of laces and some tape; he knew what Caitlyn would buy every time she came in. “On the house Cait. No need to pay a single dime.”

Caitlyn took a seat on the little couch they have in the shop, crossing her leg on top of the other and waited. She always walked home with Jayce after a practice if she stayed long enough. She only lived close by, about a 15-minute walk from the rink. They lived next to each other and his mother owned the rink so sometimes she would sneak into the rink with Jayce and mess around on the ice, sliding across the rink on their stomachs and doing butt spins on the ice before the fun had to end and Jayce had to reverse the Zamboni out to resurface the ice before the first session in the morning. It was always fun for the two of them. To just let loose and have some fun occasionally. It was also an excuse for them to finally talk about everything that had happened in between the times they skated in the middle of the night. They would lay on the ice staring up at the ceiling and talk for hours. Since Caitlyn had been training so hard for her Regionals recently, they haven’t been able to do that much lately.

“Could we… you know… skate tonight?” Caitlyn asked hesitantly, looking at Jayce as he started packing up his belongings, putting all the empty cardboard boxes to one side so he could make his way from behind the counter.

“I can’t tonight but if you’d like, I can give you the keys to come in. You know how to resurface the ice.” Jayce replied with a gentle smile. “I think you resurface much better than me to be honest, which I’m quite jealous about because every time I do it, someone is bound to complain about it.”

Caitlyn laughed and shook her head a little bit. “I will resurface the ice, don’t worry. To my standards.”

“Ouch.”

As she was about to stand up from the seat, she heard a familiar voice come from one of the hallways to the right of the shop. Her stomach dropped slightly. “Are you closing up already?”

Caitlyn looked over. Of course it was Vi.

“Uh, yeah just about to leave, what’s up, Vi?” Asked Jayce, jingling the keys in his hand.

“Oh, I was wondering if I could drop my skates off for sharpening, they’re really dull, and I actually couldn’t practice properly today.” She responded, rubbing the back of her neck.

“Yeah, of course, they’ll be ready for you tomorrow, same for you Cait.” He responded, looking over at Caitlyn, which also made Vi look at her.

“Oh hey, Cupcake!” Vi said with a big grin on her face. Jayce looked at them both, really puzzled at the nickname Vi just called her. Caitlyn gave a gentle smile at Vi and muttered a shy ‘hey’ to Vi, blushing a tiny bit in her cheeks. Oh, Jayce is not going to let go of this on their walk home.

Vi and Jayce talked about her hockey skates for a couple of minutes before Vi handed them over, telling him to take care of them which Jayce rolled his eyes playfully. Vi looked at Caitlyn one last time and smiled, before walking away.

The was something about Vi that Caitlyn really liked but she couldn’t quite pinpoint what it was. Was it the pink hair? Or was it the scar on her eyebrow or the scar on her lip? Or was it all the tattoos she could see on her arms and the one on her neck? Or the piercings? She really couldn’t figure it out. But there was something.

Caitlyn and Jayce finally headed home. Jayce handed her the rink keys along with the Zamboni keys. He wouldn’t stop teasing Caitlyn about the nickname Vi called her and every time Caitlyn tried to run away from the conversation, Jayce would chase after her and calling her Cupcake as they ran, laughing and playfully pushing each other around until they made it to the gates of their apartment complex, two tall buildings that had a huge garden in the middle of them. They parted ways as they head into their buildings and Caitlyn went straight up to her apartment.

She dropped her stuff by the front door of her flat, slipping off her trainers before plopping herself onto her couch with a big sigh leaving her mouth. Caitlyn looked at the keys, swinging them around her index finger and smiled. She’s going to have a great midnight session, and she couldn’t wait to skate alone for many hours.
Caitlyn could nap on this couch right now, her eyes getting heavy as she leaned her head back on the back of the couch, her breathing steady as she thought about her session today, thinking about what she could tweak tomorrow morning. Tonight, she’s just going to skate for fun so whatever she was going to do the next day, she can think about that then.

As time passed, after showering, making a small dinner and simply just relaxing, Caitlyn decided that 11pm would be the best time to head to the rink. She popped on a baggy hoodie, sweatpants and grabbed a spare pair of skates since her other ones were at the shop, waiting to be sharpened. She always had backups. She popped her shoes on and left her apartment, keys jingling in her pockets as she walked to the rink.

She had her hood up so no one would recognise her as she walked through the streets.

The night was peaceful, sky clear of dark blue clouds and the stars were twinkling so bright it made her smile to herself. There were a few clubs open that night, some people chattering to each other outside whilst they smoked their shimmer joints or drinking some sort of colourful concoction.
As she turned the corner to the rink, she saw pink hair trying to wiggle the doors open but no matter how much she jiggled the door and tried to jam a card between the lock, the door didn’t budge. Vi groaned and punched the door, not hard enough to smash the glass, but hard enough for her to hurt her knuckles. She turned her head slightly when she heard keys jingling behind her.

“Breaking in isn’t going to get you anywhere, Vi.” Caitlyn said, spinning the keys around her index finger and smiling a little bit. “Seems like I’m not the only one wanting a midnight skate.”

Vi chuckled and turned to look at Caitlyn, smiling at her baggy clothes. She was so used to seeing Caitlyn in tight clothing so this was a new sight for her. To be honest, she looked so hot. This was also the most she’s ever heard Caitlyn speak.

“Are you gonna call the authorities?” Vi smirked and crossed her arms over her chest. Caitlyn could only giggle at her question and shook her head, walking over the door.

“Excuse me, miss, I need access to the door.”

Vi stepped out of the way and watched as Caitlyn unlocked the door, checking that no one saw them going in, letting Vi in first before stepping in herself and locking the door behind her. “Are you here to practice?” Caitlyn asked as they both walked over to the barriers of the rink, sitting down to slip on their skates. Vi had a spare pair of skates too but she ended up going home right after she dropped her skates off. Suppose her little fun with Sarah made her tired.

“No, I’m here to just mess around to be honest. Let off some steam, ya know?” Vi responded with a little chuckle, tightening up the laces on her boots and taking off her guards.

Caitlyn didn’t expect Vi to be doing the same thing that she was here to do. She hummed and smiled, pulling her the bottom of her sweatpants to cover just her laces. She stood up and opened the barrier to the rink, slipping off her guards and stepped onto the ice. She yelped when Vi zoomed right past her after hopping over the barriers and skated around the rink with a huge smile on her face. Caitlyn couldn’t help but smile as well and started to skate around the rink too. She wasn’t here to practice but she felt quite shy that Vi was also here.

They skated around each other a couple of times, Vi showing off her cool hockey moves, Caitlyn showing off her jumps and spins and laughing when Vi attempted a spin but fell right onto her butt, belly laughing. From another person’s perspective, you would think they’d been friends for years, but this was their first time ever interacting in this way. They spent a couple of hours just messing around. Caitlyn perched herself on the barriers, giggling and yelping when Vi sprayed a bunch of ice on her when hockey stopping to perch herself next to Caitlyn. They both stood there in silence, catching their breathes and Caitlyn dusting the ice off of herself from all the fun they just had.

“I never knew you were so fun.” Vi finally broke the silence, smiling to herself and closing her eyes to bask in the natural moonlight coming in through the skylights.

Caitlyn let out a soft giggle, blushing as she stared down at her skates, “Yeah, well there’s a lot you don’t know about me.”

Vi chuckled and looked over at Caitlyn with a smile, Caitlyn looking back at her with the same expression. There was a little bit of silence before Vi opened her mouth to speak. “Hey, I’m sorry about what Sarah said to you today, that was really uncalled for.”

Caitlyn shook her head, dismissing it. She was used to all the comments that were made about her so in all honesty, she really didn’t care much about it. Of course, it hurt her feelings but she taught herself to just keep her head up and to keep moving forward.

Vi let out a gentle sigh and moved to stand in front of Caitlyn, taking her hand into her own. Caitlyn blushed at the feeling of Vi’s calloused hand in hers, looking up from her boots to make eye contact with Vi’s. There was a slight tension between the two of them. Caitlyn couldn’t tell where this was going. Her heart was racing out of her chest. She hadn’t felt like this since her last relationship with a guy but that didn’t end well since she started to understand her sexuality and realised she actually liked women and not men, after kissing one of her girlfriends as a dare during a drinking game.

“I’ve been watching you skate sometimes, and you skate so beautifully.” Vi started, a little smile growing on her scarred lip. “I’ve been meaning to have a conversation with you, get to know you but every time I tried to, Sarah would always find a way to get me into her pants.”

Caitlyn felt somewhat jealous. She wanted someone to be in her pants too but she would scare girls away when they found out her family name was Kiramman or found out what her daily routine looked like. She just wanted someone to love her.

Vi rambled on about what she liked about Caitlyn every time she would see her at the rink. Her little tooth gap when Caitlyn would be laughing with her coach, her voice when she spoke ever so delicately to squeeze past the hockey team in the hallways, her dark blue hair. This was making Caitlyn’s heart flutter and race rapidly; it felt like it was going to pound out of her chest. She brought her index finger up and pressed it onto Vi’s lips to stop her from talking, only for Vi to smile against her finger. Caitlyn smiled when she did. “I didn’t know you even noticed me like that.”

“How can I not? You’re gorgeous, Cupcake, and you skate like your life depends on it.” Vi responded, removing Caitlyn’s finger from her lips, moving herself a little bit closer. Caitlyn blushed even harder and started trying to hide her face from Vi, only for her to bring a hand to her cheek and gently turned her head so they were locking eyes again.

There was silence between them and before they knew it, their lips locked together. A small, warm kiss. This was not on her midnight skate bingo card. But she really enjoyed the kiss. When Vi’s lips pulled away from hers, she let out a little whimper, which Vi noticed very clearly, chuckling slightly and locked their lips together again, in a more passionate kiss. Caitlyn wanted to deepen the kiss, she could feel it in her heart to kiss Vi harder but her mind was telling her to be calm, so she matched Vi’s energy by returning the kiss passionately, wrapping arms around her neck whilst Vi’s snaked around her waist, pulling her in closer, embracing each other in a warm hug.

Caitlyn pulled back from the kiss, looking down into Vi’s eyes. “Won’t Sarah be mad if she found out?”

Vi scoffed and shrugged, “I honestly don’t care, we fuck because it’s fun for us, there’s no feelings attached.”

Caitlyn hummed, cupping her cheek and brushing her thumb against Vi’s cheek tattoo. She gave her cheek a small peck, smiling. There was a small part of her that wondered if this whole kiss was just going to end up being the same thing that Vi had with Sarah.

Their midnight skate ended around 3am. It ended up being more kissing than skating but Caitlyn wasn’t mad about it. She was only there for a bit of fun skating and the kissing was a bonus. She hopped off the ice first, taking off her skates before heading over to the Zamboni and opening the barrier doors to reverse the heavy machinery onto the ice to resurface it. Vi watched from the seat as she took off her boots, a smile across her face as she watched Caitlyn work her magic to make the ice ever so smooth. She couldn’t help but think she looked fucking amazing in her baggy clothes, hair in a messy ponytail as she sat on the Zamboni going round and round. Once Caitlyn was done resurfacing and was parking up the Zamboni back in its dedicated place, Vi picked up Caitlyn’s skates from the floor and walked over to the pathway around the rink and watched as Caitlyn jogged over to her.

They both walked out, smiling and laughing about something Vi had said. Caitlyn smiled as she listened to Vi talk about Powder and her silly antics when it came to training for their next upcoming game. She locked the doors, pushing and pulling on the handle gently to check that it was definitely locked before turning to Vi, taking her skates from her hands and smiling at her. “Well, I’ll see you in the morning, Vi.”

“Let me walk you home, it’s very late, and well, there’s probably freaky people out.” Vi smiled, cocking her head to the side slightly.

“It’s okay, I’ll be okay.” Caitlyn smiled, shaking her head. “I live close by.”

Vi huffed playfully.

“In that case, I’ll see you in the morning, Cupcake.” Vi pulled her in for a quick peck, causing Caitlyn to giggle and return the kiss, turning it into a silly kiss before pulling away and walking towards her apartment. She looked back and blew Vi a kiss, who playfully caught it and made out with her hand, making Caitlyn laugh as she walked.

Caitlyn couldn’t stop smiling on her way home and the whole night was something she never expected.
