When Killer had heard that Cross and Epic were going to a fair to celebrate Valentine’s Day, he'd been utterly baffled- was it another holiday he yet again had no clue about existing?
Colour had explained it to him when he found Killer squinting at the computer in his room, unable to really read the tiny words. Apparently, it was another holiday, this time to celebrate love, and people usually got each other chocolates and spent the day together- ah, that explained why Cross wanted to celebrate it.
Of course, he couldn't let Cross just have a normal, peaceful day with Epic- the experience needed to be truly memorable. As Colour explained different parts of the holiday to him, he interrupted.
“You wanna be my Valentine to crash Cross’ little date?” He grinned.
Colour’s cheeks dusted with a rainbow blush as Killer’s words processed. “You wanna be my Valentine?”
“Well, not like that. But if anyone asks, we can just say we're Valentines. Besides, it seems like they get perks at that little fair Cross is going to.” He waved his hand dismissively.
“So this whole idea is just to crash Cross’ date?”
“Yep.”
Colour sighed, “Killer, we should let them-”
“C’mon! It’s gotta be a memorable day for them!” He lightly shook Colour by the shoulders, then wrapped an arm around him, grinning. “Plus, I mean, there’s tons of prizes to be won.”
Colour’s flames flickered much quicker now, going between the different souls. Colour groaned, “you really know how to convince certain people , and I hate you for it.”
Killer’s grin sharpened but he simply pat Colour’s shoulder, finally letting him go. “I have no clue what you mean. So, we’re going to the fair now?”
“Yeah… and, well, it’d be kinda funny to tease Epic.”
That was how they ended up in the queue to enter the fair, Colour sliding some gold across to the ticket agent, getting two little slips of paper in return.
“How are we even gonna find them? This place is absolutely massive and there’s so many people,” Colour pointed out.
Killer grabbed his phone from his pocket, waving it in front of Colour. “Ages ago, I put a secret tracking app on all of my friends’ phones so that I knew what they were up to.”
“Killer, that’s stalking- ”
He simply brought a finger to Colour’s mouth, shushing him. He squinted at his screen and grinned, dropping his hand from Colour’s mouth to take his hand in his own. “This way!”
Colour sputtered as he was dragged off, doing his best to gain his footing back so he wasn’t just being tugged all over the place. “Wait, so if you installed an app on all your friends’ phones, does that mean-”
“Yep, you have one. Honestly, I barely have to use it, I’m usually by your side 24/7 anyways.”
“...That’s still not a good thing,” Colour murmured.
Killer sighed, “fine, fine, I’ll take it off after this event.”
Colour cleared his throat. “Off of everybody’s phones, right?”
Killer’s shoulders sagged but he nodded, pouting. Though, he lit up once he glanced at his phone, pointing to a ticket booth nearby. It was to a teacups ride, where Epic and Cross were lined up, waiting.
Epic’s head leaned against Cross’ shoulder gently, his thumb tracing along the back of Cross’ hand. Cross nuzzled the top of Epic’s head and pressed a gentle kiss to it. Killer grinned and dragged Colour into the queue, not being too far behind the two lovebirds thankfully.
“Let’s try to get a ride right next to theirs,” he whispered, snickering as his bones rattled faintly with excitement. Colour rolled his eyes but placed a hand on his arm, trying to gently stop his rattling- they didn’t want to get busted right now.
Finally, the queue moved forward, and Colour slipped some gold into the booth window. A cat monster glanced down at them, before nodding and pointing their thumb at the ride. “Pick a seat, you’ll get buckled in soon.”
Colour nodded, smiling and waving as Killer dragged him in. They headed to the closest teacup to Epic and Cross, the sides painted with hedges, almost like a maze, and some glowing green eyes shining from the shadows of the hedges.
A slime monster soon made his way over to their cup, slamming the gate of it shut and latching it into place. He hummed, a viscous tail wagging side to side. “Are you two ready for the ride of your life?”
“It’s just teacups, I’m sure they won’t be that bad,” Colour giggled.
The slime laughed, his grin oddly sharp. “Oh, well, I guess I tried to warn you! Let’s just say, if you two are close, you’re about to get much closer.”
With that, he marched off, securing the other teacups. Killer leaned on the side, whistling to try to get Cross’ attention. He glanced over curiously at the noise, then his face dropped.
“Hey Crossy!” He practically sang, relishing in Cross’ expression as it shifted between the five stages of grief all at once.
Colour chuckled and waved at the two, a glint of mischief in his eye. His flames roared with obvious excitement as the ride started to move, slow at first but sure to pick up speed.
“Oh you motherf-”
“WELCOME TO MR CICLE’S ENDLESS MAZE! THIS RIDE WILL HAVE YOU GOING IN CIRCLES, GUARANTEED!” The slime monster’s voice- Mr Cicle, apparently- boomed over a speaker.
Killer grinned as Cross’ voice was muffled by the announcement, simply leaning against Colour- the ride would push them together anyways. Epic was staring at Colour in mock betrayal, lifting a hand up to his head in a dramatic fashion.
“Ahh, they’re gonna love us by the end of today, I just know it,” Killer laughed.
“Love isn’t the word I’d use. Maybe LOVE,” Colour snorted, lightly nudging Killer in the ribs. “You’re taking all the blame, though.”
“Oh c’mon, you know you wanted to do this just as much as I did.”
Colour opened his mouth to argue or give some kind of excuse, but the ride began to speed up, a manic laugh echoing over the speaker. Killer instinctively held onto the side with one hand, his other wrapping around Colour to keep him close.
“Isn’t this ride supposed to be for kids??” Colour sputtered, leaning against Killer. He remembered skimming the sign just before they entered and that no, this one really wasn’t for kids- why the hell would Cross and Epic get on such a boring ride anyways?
Instead of explaining, he grinned, nudging Colour. “Maybe they’ve lost control over it.”
“Oh don’t say that- ”
He cackled, “I’m just messing with you! Relax, this one’s for adults.”
Finally, it started to slow down, and Mr Cicle soon returned to their cart and opened the gate, beckoning them to step out. “Hope you had fun!”
Killer jumped out and offered his hand to Colour, helping him out of the cart. He bowed dramatically, snickering, “right after you, my darling.”
Colour scoffed, playfully shoving Killer and marching on ahead. He laughed and followed after him, but they barely even got out of the ride’s zone before Killer was grabbed by the front of his shirt.
Cross glared at him. “Did you seriously follow us here?!”
“Aww, no, of course not! Colour and I were on a date- c’mon, it’s Valentine’s day, everybody’s gonna flock here to celebrate!” He raised his hands in mock surrender, his shit-eating grin never dropping from his face.
Epic’s jaw dropped and he glanced between Colour and Killer quickly. “No shot. You two are dating?! Since when?!”
Colour stuttered as Epic grabbed him by the shoulders, shaking him around. “Uh-”
“Today!” Killer chirped, nudging Cross away. “I asked him to be my Valentine.”
Cross squinted at Killer, glancing at Colour a few times. He crossed his arms and huffed, “bullshit, you definitely did this to spy on me.”
“If I wanted to spy you, I’d just watch the app.” He smiled.
“...What? What app?” Cross’ brows furrowed but Killer grabbed Colour’s hand, eagerly skipping off and disappearing through the crowd before they could be questioned further.
Colour sighed fondly, letting Killer drag him along, until he spotted a high striker. He skidded to a stop and Killer hummed, glancing at him and noticing that his flames were burning a bright orange.
“Ohh, someone’s excited,” he chuckled and nudged Colour forward. “Go on, might as well let the kids have some fun until we go back to stalking Cross and Epic.”
Colour nodded and grinned, rolling up his sleeves as he marched up to the high striker. He slipped some gold into it and it fired up, ready to be played. He grabbed the mallet and lifted it high above his head, before slamming it down against the bright red circle.
Killer’s soul stuttered and he sucked in a breath, flicking his eyes up to the tower to see the score. 67, not bad, he thought.
Colour’s flames flickered from orange to yellow and he spun the mallet around, slipping another piece of gold into the machine. Killer watched with curiosity as Colour brought it above his head again, but not as high as before.
He swung the mallet down and the score ticked up, up, up. 81- holy shit, Justice is definitely going to hold that over Bravery, Killer snorted at the thought. He walked over and pat Colour’s shoulder, smiling.
“Should I give it a go?”
Colour nodded with a hum of acknowledgement, but he seemed distracted. Killer shrugged and gently took the mallet from him, inserting some gold and tapping his foot as he thought how best to do this.
His competitive flare was starting to spark up, but he also didn’t want to take away the kids’ fun. He glanced back at Colour to check that he was still thoroughly distracted and slammed the mallet down, making sure that when it actually hit, it wouldn’t go higher than either of their scores.
45, that’s good enough.
He set the mallet back into place. “Well, looks like I’m not as strong and powerful as those two little souls.”
Colour blinked and looked at the score, snickering after a few moments. He pat Killer’s shoulder condescendingly. “You tried.”
I really didn’t, he didn’t say that though, instead smiling and nudging Colour. “Let’s go find Cross and Epic again.”
“Shouldn’t we do something else first? Like, maybe get something to eat?” Colour pointed out and Killer hummed thoughtfully. He didn’t really get hungry that often, but if Colour was suggesting a snack break, then that probably meant he should.
“Alright, let’s find a stall or something then.” He took Colour’s hand in his own again, warmth gently seeping into his cold hand. Colour smiled and this time, he led Killer through the crowd, keeping his head high to look out for any food stalls.
Eventually, a small open cafeteria came into view, the smell of perfectly cooked meat and fresh vegetables wafting from the inside. Colour spotted a small table with two chairs and guided Killer over, before pulling the seat out and offering for him to take a place.
“Y’know, you don’t need to act all romantic when we’re not those two idiots,” he teased.
Colour scoffed, “you never know, they could be in here.”
Killer hummed, glancing at his phone- they weren’t, but he wouldn’t argue against Colour anymore. He simply rested his arm on the table, leaning against his hand. “Right, lover boy, you know what I like.”
“Yeah, I’ll be back soon.” He quickly headed to the queue. Killer simply glanced around the cafeteria, tapping his fingers along the table as he waited. It wasn’t particularly busy, but it also wasn’t peak lunch time just yet. It was a good idea to get some food now, it’d be much quicker.
He couldn't exactly see the decorations of the cafeteria well, nor any people in detail, but he still enjoyed the vague shapes and tried to put a word to each of them. He spotted a batch of green and hummed, sniffing the air- beyond the cooked food, there was also the faint smell of plants and freshly watered dirt.
Soon enough, Colour returned to the table, sliding a plate over to Killer, which he accepted with a quick 'thanks'. On his plate was a cut of rare beef, the light red standing out against the pure white of the plate. He smiled, eagerly grabbing a fork and knife. He cut into it and popped a piece into his mouth, smiling as the taste of slightly cooked blood hits his tongue.
“I don't get how you can enjoy that. Doesn't it just taste like raw meat?” Colour hummed.
“That's the best part!” He chirped with a wide grin, popping another piece into his mouth with a satisfied groan.
Colour chuckled, “yeah, well, you aren't going to kiss me with that mouth.”
Killer snickered and leaned across the table, making obnoxious kissing noises at Colour. Colour lightly shoved him back into his seat with a snort, quickly stabbing into some lettuce and popping it into his mouth so Killer couldn't attempt to kiss him- which he wouldn't, but they both knew how committed to the bit he could get.
“You're no fun.” He pouted, falling back against his chair and crossing his arms dramatically. Colour glanced up and raised a bone brow in silence, popping a tomato into his mouth. Killer gasped, “you're ignoring me! That's not partner-like of you at all!”
“Between us it is, I'd say.”
Killer opened his mouth to whine, but a small flash had him glancing down at his phone. He gasped as he shoved his phone in front of Colour's face. “They're at the ferris wheel! We need to go!”
“But we just-”
Killer snatched Colour's fork, stabbing into as much of his salad as he could, then shoving it in Colour's mouth. He took his fork and stabbed another piece of his own food, shoving it in his mouth as well. He grabbed Colour's hand and dragged him out of the cafeteria, rushing after where the little dot guided him.
By the time they reached the queue for the ferris wheel, Colour was panting and leaning his hands on his knees, ducked over. Killer's soul was thumping slightly harder, but thanks to his constant activity, he barely felt the strain. He pulled Colour close and wrapped an arm around him, patting his back. “Sorry, sorry. Just didn't wanna miss out on this.”
“Y- Yeah. Just- fuck, how do- how do you even do that so- so easily?” He huffed, slowly standing up properly and wiping his head with the back of his sleeve. Killer chuckled but stood on his tippy toes, peeking through the line. He spotted the familiar purple and black of Epic's hoodie, grinning deviously.
“They're not that far ahead of us, this is perfect!”
“We won't be on the same cart as them, you do realise this, right?” Colour raised a bone brow.
“Ah, but that's where you're wrong. We can say we're on a double date with them and got lost in the crowd. And we can show them photos of us hanging out if they doubt us, so they'll have to let us in!”
Colour stared at him, before sighing in a mix of exasperation and fondness. “That might work. But if it doesn't, well, at least we get a nice view with each other.”
Killer nodded and curled his hand around Colour's, swaying on his feet as the queue slowly moved forward. When they arrived at the ticket booth, Killer opened his mouth, only to immediately freeze on the spot. Fresh was sitting inside of the booth, a casual grin on his face as he waved.
“Eyy, wassup broskis! You're wit' dose two lovebirds, right?” He greeted.
“Uh... yes...?” Colour spoke up for Killer, who shook his head around to bring himself back from his stupor.
Fresh nodded and slided them some tickets, raising his hand when Colour went to exchange gold with him. “Nah-ah-ah, dis one's on me. I see you've been followin' dem around, and it's da most hilarious thing. Go on!”
Killer grinned and snatched the tickets up quickly. “Oh, you're so much cooler than what I've heard. C'mon, let's go!”
Fresh waved as the two bolted to the carts, waiting for someone to let them on. An unfamiliar skeleton wearing a black leather jacket, sunglasses and had blue magic hair nodded as he pulled open the door to a cart. Colour waved sheepishly at the man- clearly they knew each other- but Killer didn't care as he eagerly stepped into the cart.
“Wha- oh, F U N K off!” Cross groaned, practically falling back against the seat of the cart. Epic pat his shoulder comfortingly, playfully scowling at the two that just entered.
Killer plopped into the seat opposite to them, smiling like a wolf that just cornered its prey. “Hey guys, isn't this double date just wonderful?”
“I've never had a worse day until today,” Epic snorted. ”Seriously, was your entire plan for today to just follow us around? Stalkers, bruh, they never give up...”
“Pretty much,” Colour chuckled, carefully sitting down beside Killer. He glanced around worriedly. “Are you sure the cart will hold?”
“It'll be fiiiine, they wouldn't have let us on if it wasn't gonna hold.” Killer waved his hand, then curiously looked at Cross. He had reluctantly pulled himself back up onto the seat, but had his face buried in his hands. He snorted at the sight.
“You guys are the worst. Epic, don't tell me you were behind this as well.”
Epic gasped, “are you saying I'd betray you!? Bruh, how could you!”
“No I'm not, I just know this is right up your alley, dude! You can't blame me for being suspicious!”
Killer cackled as he watched them bicker, leaning against Colour's side. The cart gently rocked and swayed as it was slowly pulled up into the sky, bringing them high above the festivities and buildings. Colour's flames flickered in quiet excitement as he marveled at the view, pressed against the glass, and Killer couldn't help the genuine smile that creeped up on his face.
“Ahhh, Valentine's day. The perfect day to ruin your friends' date and their relationship,” he joked, earning a snicker from Colour, who turned to face him again.
“This was nice. Even if it was just us hanging out, I enjoyed it.“
Colour propped his head against Killer's shoulder, softly purring. Cross and Epic's argument came to a close as the sunset peeked just beyond the distant mountains, casting them all in a golden glow. They glanced at each other and Epic shifted closer, pulling Cross into a kiss.
“And there it is,” Killer whispered, knowing Cross would slap him if he ruined their moment. Colour smiled and nodded, nuzzling his head against Killer's shoulder.
“Even if they act upset, they had fun hanging out with us,” he whispered back with a small giggle. “It's always a great day when we hang out.”
“It's a perfect day 'cause Delta's not here.” Killer nodded and Colour scoffed, lightly smacking him.
“You can't have one nice moment? Just one?”
They laughed softly and glanced at Cross and Epic, who finally pulled away from the kiss, both of their eyelights in the shape of hearts as they stared at each other, hand in hand.
Killer was so lucky to have them all.
