Sonic was blindsided.
Mechanical forces that pale in comparison to the blueprint, a militia of what appears to be replicas of the fastest hedgehog alive, was surrounded at all fronts. Sonic would be fazed if he hadn’t saved the world from an ego-maniacal scientist—twice. Well, trice now after the recent life-altering mission that irrevocably changed him as a whole, one that inflated his ego into “there’s nothing he can’t beat” mentality.
A mentality that deems rather detrimental as he lowered his guard a little too low, nearly getting his ass handed to him if it weren’t for the sudden whirl of pink, demolishing an unsuspecting robot that charged at him from behind. Sonic tumbles forward to the ground, quickly pivoting himself to face the dire situation at hand or what should’ve been dire, but before Sonic could completely wrap his head around everything, the battalion of robots were now completely annihilated. The intricate automations were reduced into nothing but cheap pyrotechnics, pummeled down into nothing but scraps with just one full swing of what looks to be—a hammer?
“What?! Who are you???”
Sonic exclaimed, the anticipation irked him to no end. The night is too dim and the curtains of smoke impaired his sight beyond discerning. The cloaked figure emerges from the smog. Sonic’s eyes widened, all of his senses seemingly overrides. His mind and body is dissonant, rendering himself utterly motionless…
The figure came towards him in steady strides, stopping just a mere foot in front of him. They dropped their comically large hammer on the ground beside them, but their grip on the handle remain latched and firm. Sonic could’ve sworn he felt the earth beneath him shake at the impact. Despite of the hood shrouding their face entirely, Sonic could feel their eyes boring down at him in deep peruse, sizing him as their head slightly tilted to and fro, analyzing him for who knows why...
Sonic finally found himself to part his lips, but proved to be a rather futile attempt to speak, considering no words escaped from his pitifully dried mouth. It was a futile attempt as a whole when in one quick motion, the cloaked figure used their free hand to remove the hood and reached their hand out for him to take…
Sonic was taken aback.
He wasn’t expecting a whole lot of what the figure looked like, but surely he didn’t expect for a girl—let alone a beautiful pink hedgehog to stand before him. Her natural pink quills were a stark contrast against the dark night, even more so as her bright emerald eyes seemingly gleamed on their own. Her expression softens into a warm and welcoming smile…
“Hello! I’m Amy Rose. What’s your name?”
Now it was Sonic’s turn to go mute, staring up at the girl like a deer in headlights and leaving her hanging little too long for comfort…
Amy could only assume the worse at such a reaction—or lack thereof.
“…Oh my gosh. Those robots didn’t hurt you, did they? Did I hurt you?” She desperately inquired, guilt overthrows her completely. In spite of no confirmation, she unhands her weapon and quickly knelt down to Sonic’s level for inspection. Her hands reached out to touch, but in a split second she hesitated in realization. She retracted it and planted it onto her bended knees instead. She’s eager to attend but exhibits boundaries for the other’s sake. Although her restraint doesn’t extend to the expression on her face, how it’s riddled with the deepest concern and the utmost attentiveness to help, readily to do so upon his approval. All of which made the blue hedgehog fluster faster than he could run. As if Sonic wasn’t bashful enough, she absentmindedly inched forward to examine him closer to which he shot up and stiffly stood on his feet, lightheadedness caused him to stumble a bit, but he recovered just as quick.
“Wooah! What?! Pfft! Naaah! I’m good. Don’t sweat it! I’m super cool!” He hastily answered, sheepishly swiping his pointer finger under his nose, “Yup! Suuupacool!” Sonic added, holding two thumbs up and mustered a toothy grin, but the cringe was too much to handle. He didn’t know what came over him when he said that? Or why he’s acting like this? He couldn’t even hide the grimace morphing his face, ultimately souring his boyish charm into a hopelessly awkward teen…
Of course Sonic’s nervousness doesn’t go unnoticed by Amy. Although, her intuitiveness could only comprehend so much. She raised a brow, that concerned look on her face has yet to subside, “Really? Are you sure?” She implored, standing back up again.
“Y-Yeah! Totally!” He crossed his arms over his chest, preventing himself from future awkward hand gestures, “If it wasn’t for you I would’ve easily taken those robo wannabemes out myself!” He so humbly bragged, slightly shrugging his shoulders with this air of aloofness. Now placing his hands onto his hips, standing as tall as he could, and puffed his chest out for an added bravado.
Amy blinked at that in disbelief, “…Are you serious?” Her expression could only be read as unimpressed; acutely peeved, “Like would it kill you to say thank you instead of being a-a—braggadocious brown nosing jerk?”
Sonic falters in one fell swoop, “What??? N-No! I-I mean yes! But that’s not—! You’re just—“
“—In your way? Stepping on your toes? An inconvenience to everyone around you?!”
Amy exasperated a sigh, exhaling more of a frustrated groan than anything. She couldn’t tell if her face was heating up due to anger or embarrassment. Perhaps it’s a mixture of both. Whichever the case, she shouldn’t have taken it out on him. Her reaction may or may not have been misdirected…
Nevertheless, she shook her head, briskly taking her hammer and swings it over her shoulder, “Sorry for stealing your thunder...” She grumbled, turning her back to Sonic, his face nearly kissed her weapon goodbye, but thankfully his reflexes were on cue this time, causing him to weave backwards.
“Good luck with your “robo wannabemes”, whoever the heck you are…“ Amy was fixing to leave, but Sonic appeared before her eyes faster than she could blink. Amy yelped, instinctively raising her hammer in defense.
In spite of Amy’s reaction, she really had no intention of hurting him—yet.
“Look you—!” Amy seethed, slowly starting to regret saving this weirdo…
“—SONIC!” Sonic blurted out, holding his hands up in surrender.
“…What?”
“My name! It’s Sonic—the Hedgehog.”
Admittedly, Sonic reacted before he could think. Normally he never minded doing something like that because everything just works out for him eventually!
However, in this case scenario? He desperately wished he came prepared; knew what to say or do in this very moment because right now his mind is scrambling for something! Anything to not dig himself deeper in a hole…
Tom would definitely have some good advice in how to handle a girl! A really pretty girl…
He’s married to Maddie after all…
Amy placed her free hand on her hip and leaned her weight on one leg, “I’d say nice to meet you, but you’re not exactly doing too hot, Sonic—the Hedgehog…”
“…Yeah, I know that now,” He lightly chuckled in defeat, nervously rubbing the nape of his neck. Sonic found it harder to meet her gaze, ever so harsh and scrutinizing. “…I’m sorry.” He glanced up at her, a sliver of hope prompted him to continue as Amy’s cold expression flickered—mellowed…
“…It’s just that when you showed up outta nowhere? With that kickass hammer and smashed everything so fast like it was nothing??? And saving me on top of all that! I mean. Just. Wow. You were so cool. You are cool. I mean it…” Sonic trained his eyes on her this time, this unwavering conviction in his expression and sincerity in his tone that made it all the more difficult to detect deceit—only that there is none.
“Thank you, Amy Rose…”
Amy felt her stomach flutter. Was it the praise? Was it because he actually listened to her? Is the bar really that low for her to feel such a way? It somehow feels more intense coming from him. Hell, it almost made her place a hand on her stomach out of pure surprise, but she remained composed. Guarded.
“You…” Amy pressed her lips into a thin line, suppressing this sheepish giddiness that’s tugging at the corners of her lips from going upward, “…Think I’m cool?” Her lips however gave into a sly smirk to appear on this now mischievous look on her face, “…like suuupacool?”
Sonic immediately blushes at that witty callback…
“Hehe. Yeeah yea. Okayyy. I’ll give ya that…”
“Hm? I don’t know what you mean~?”
“Jeez! Would it kill you to say thank you instead of rubbing it my face?”
“Hah! Touché…”
God, could she be any more perfect for him?
“…Well. Thank you, Sonic the Hedgehog,” Amy conceded, “But speaking of me kicking robotic butts,“ She paused, walking around the other and took a few steps forward, “Are we excepting more to show up ooorrrr…?” She inquisitively asked, stopping at a distance and turned to face him again.
In all honesty, Sonic keeps forgetting he got attacked. Sure, he probably should be a little more serious about the situation. They were built to his likeness for crying out loud. That has to raise some red flags, to mean something big, something threatening coming towards his ways…
“Eh. Maybe. Who knows at this point,” Sonic deadpanned. Amy could only assume he’s acting all conceited again, but his whole demeanor didn’t display as such. Not really. Has he dealt with these robots before? Maybe dealt with worse? She’s not too certain. But what she is certain of is how unbothered and dismissive he is about the whole thing. It’s a little concerning how desensitized he is, but she’s honestly not for one to talk…
“They weren’t all that anyways…” Sonic added, shrugging it off before reaching his hands behind his head, “Besides, it’s hard to live up to the real deal, y’know?” He boasted, pairing it off with a wink and a smile.
Amy rolled her eyes, although she’s not as piqued as she was last time, more in playful countenance if that ghost of a smirk on her lips wasn’t already an indication.
“Well, from what I could recall you were just sitting pretty still and gawking at me while I destroyed those robots left and right soooo—Nope. I don’t know what the real deal looks like it seems...” Amy casually shrugs, matching his laidback attitude before walking away, now leaving him standing still and gawking at her…
“Wha—?! Now hold on!” He quickly followed suit, treading next to her in a backwards direction. He wasn’t exactly following her solely because he has no clue where he is or how to navigate his way back home, but also because he’d be a damn fool to just let a catch like her go. What can he say? Amy Rose is just as captivating as she is a sight to behold…
“—Wait a second. Did you just call me pretty???”
“What?!” Now it was Amy’s turn to be still and gawk at him in disbelief, “N-no! No. I never said that!”
“Nah-aaah~! You said I was sitting pretty and still~”
“Pretty still. I said sitting pretty still,” Amy emphasized, shaking her head at Sonic’s antics. Something she may or may not have to get used to. “How in the world did you hear “and’’ in-between it?”
“Jeez. Keep calling me pretty and I just might fall for y—aAH!” Sonic screeched. Amy immediately halted in her tracks. She worriedly stared down at the blue hedgehog. Well, mostly in shock than worried to find him suddenly on the ground. The feeling was more than mutual on his end. Unbeknownst to him, there was a sizable tree root protruding out from the soil, just waiting for someone to trip on it…
To which he so figuratively and literally fell for…
Before Amy had the chance to ask if he was alright, Sonic quickly picked himself back up again before it gets embarrassing—more than it already is…
“I’m good! I’m good!” Sonic rest-assured, disingenuously laughing it off as he dusted himself, “I meant to do that. Just testing gravity and what not. It works perfectly fine by the way!” Sonic wanted nothing more but to shut his own damn mouth up! But for some reason his brain goes all stupid when he’s around her, “…Just thought you should know…”
Amy stifled a laugh, consequently escaping a small snort. The way her little nose scrunched up, paired with a joyous toothy smile, but her hand partially covered it, nulling the full beauty her smile possesses, but somehow, simultaneously it added a bit of a bashful charm to herself without meaning to…
Sonic’s breath hitched at her reaction, his heart skipped a beat and his skin practically melted off of his face over it. Sure, he embarrassed himself one too many times in one night. But for her? Somehow embarrassing himself didn’t seem all that bad. He’ll embarrass himself a million times over just to see her react like that again, but for now he’ll replay this one good memory of her in his head...
In fact, he’ll make it his sole mission to make new ones…
“…Duly noted.” Amy playfully replies, giving him a simple wink and a smile, of course not without throwing the good ol’ thumbs up for good measure before continuing her way. As if that small gesture alone didn’t short-circuit his brain.
Like a snapshot taken within a single blink, he took two good memories of her…
“Hey!” Her voice snapped him out of his daze, “Keep up slow poke!”
Sonic nodded, catching up to her in a flash, “Is that a challenge I hear?”
“…Perhaps—“ she hummed, “—for another time...”
“Why? Afraid you’ll lose~?”
“Afraid that you absolutely have no idea where you’re going, let alone where the finish line would be? Yes. To lose…?” She glanced over to him, determination gleaming in her emerald eyes, “…In your dreams.”
If she’s in it? Sonic could only hope...
“R-Right. Heh. Totally forgot about that…” He admitted, shyly scratching his cheek with his index finger, “Speaking of which…” He trailed off, now pointing his finger upwards and does a heeded full turnaround, scanning the wooded surroundings in curiosity. It seemingly stretched out for miles…
“…Where are we going exactly?”
