the moon like a thin smile

Summary:

The world is still feeling the aftermath of the Titanomachy. In its wake, Artemis finds herself seeking refuge (for an alleged couple of nights) in one of her own temples until her brother Apollo rendezvous with her again. Orion is a weary traveller in this uncertain world, suddenly plagued by its first-ever winter, choosing the temple of a new goddess as a resting spot—intrigued when he finds a young woman on the sacrificial table.

Chapter Text

Istrus, however, says that Artemis loved Orion and came near marrying him. Apollo took this hard, and when scolding her brought no results, on seeing the head of Orion who was swimming a long way off, he wagered her that she couldn't hit with her arrows the black object in the sea. Since she wished to be called an expert in that skill, she shot an arrow and pierced the head of Orion. The waves brought his slain body to the shore, and Artemis, grieving greatly that she had struck him, and mourning his death with many tears, put him among the constellations.

Pseudo-Hyginus, Astronomica 2.34

Being disappointed, then, in his search for the king, Orion went away to Krete and spent his time hunting in company with Artemis and Leto. It seems that he threatened to kill every beast there was on earth; whereupon, in her anger, Gaea, sent up against him a Scorpion of very great size by which he was stung and so perished.

Hesiod, Astronomy Fragment 4

So it was when Eos of the rosy-fingers chose out Orion; you gods who live in such ease yourselves were jealous of her until chaste Artemis in her cloth-of-gold visited him with her gentle shafts and slew him in Ortygia.

Homer, Odyssey 5.121

The goddess was back against the wall, gun barrel to her forehead and her knife on the throat of the man who held it there. She heard her heartbeat in her own ears and felt his against the edge of the knife. They were both one-third orange lamppost light and two-thirds blue-grey darkness. Her brother left her alone to talk with an oracle and she had managed to get a gun to her forehead, but what was a goddess to fear of guns? What was a goddess of the moon to fear in the night?

“I’ll rip your throat open before you can pull the trigger.”

“Oh, yeah?” The hunter puffed hot air, silver and with the orange of the light against the cold night. “Gun is quicker.”

“My teeth are sharper.”

Notes:

this story is a combination of various myths. i am borrowing elements from the different versions of orion and artemis and putting them in a context that has, more or less, been fabricated by pop culture: that of them being romantically involved. when i was in high school i became completely obsessed with them so this is a gift from adult!me to teen!me more than anything. i did more research than i should have for a silly au but i am literally a professional on the subject so what did we expect.
