Work Text:

Mei Terumi was a serious woman, the mizukage, who had lead thousands of soldiers for a lifetime, both during the Mist uprising revolution and in the fourth great ninja war. She was a strong and independent woman, she certainly didn't need help in her work and she certainly didn't need any man to support or command her. Of course she wanted to find a man, she wanted to get married and she believed in true love. Marriage has always been her greatest dream, since she was a child, she wanted to be loved unconditionally and without barriers. But for now life has only reserved different surprises for her, but that doesn't mean she can't see others navigate the tortuous sea of love and happiness.

The young Kazekage's pale eyes jumped from one sentence to another, he was incredibly focused on a document, as usual. But Mei could see the young man's leg bouncing, it was throughout all his stay in Konoha that the boy seemed agitated, as if he wanted to be somewhere else. Of course, no one really wanted to be there, to argue with those bigoted old men whose only advantage was wealth, but Gaara was the best, with his incredibly emotionless face, at hiding his annoyance.

As soon as the meeting ended the young man quickly stood up, took his notes and hastily greeted everyone, declined in a monotone voice the invitation to have dinner with the remaining kage and left.

This same chant happened often. Mei had begun to hypothesize that, as they all grew older, the boy had grown tired of chatting with them. But this theory didn't hold up, after all they talked about work even while they were having dinner. So she thought of another explanation: "Gaara had found a girlfriend." There was no other answer, his friends (if he had them), always met him afterwards (had he mentioned it? He didn't often talk about himself), he wasn't alone (-"I have to go, I can't be late- Words of the Kazekage ) he wasn’t with his siblings (Kankuro was with the escorts, and the sister with one of Konoha's shinobi, at least according to Kankuro) and it happened only in Konoha, there were no other options.

So, the young Fifth Kazekage had found love! Mei should, perhaps, reconsider her idea. One shouldn't care so much about a colleague, but that child was simply too complex a puzzle to avoid, a Jinchuriki and a kage and last time it ended in chaos, so, one could forgive following his equal, the leader of a village, among the streets of Konoha.

Gaara was walking at a fast pace, as if he were late, he wasn't lying when he declined the offer for the time. He crossed the streets with agility, his coat flapping with the straps of the jar making a jingling noise. Mei shifted and could see a beautiful smile on the Kazekage's face, sharp white teeth showing between his lips. Wow, the boy's smile was never seen. This is definitely the best possible confirmation!

After a little he slowed down, starting to walk normally. He began to fix his hair, trying to flatten that mass of red curls, he straightened his already straight collar, put his jar in the right position, and buttoned up his jacket tightly. The smile still constant on the jinchuriki's face. He continued walking until he came to a small curry restaurant, he stopped as soon as he saw a boy. Taijutsu practitioner, Rock Lee.

Ah, perhaps her theory was exaggerated and she was wrong again. Maybe her desire for love had confused her.

After all, what could you expect? The bizarre Konoha ninja was perhaps the most eccentric person possible, the bright green spandex and orange leg warmers were just the beginning, in addition to the gigantic eyebrows and a disproportionate haircut, to say the least, a high and formal tone of voice always sparkling with joy for no reason, an almost annoying formality and conversations on strange topics.

Well, maybe she expected too much, the Kazekage wasn't the most talkative or social person, in fact the idea of Gaara with a girl was bizarre but it didn't matter, she really hoped for it though. She wanted to tease him at least a little, the meetings were always so boring and a little drama would be fun.

The mizukage snorted, walking over to apologize, or at least that's what she wanted. Before Gaara grabbed the collar of Rock's green jounin jacket and pulled him in for a kiss…Ok what the honest fuck.

Okay, this was…definitely unexpected. She had followed the jinchuriki prepared for a kiss, but not for the person who would receive it. But all the dots connected now: "Rock Lee as an escort every time he was in Konoha, Gaara's annoyance at being late and the ever-present smile when he left and it happened only and exclusively in the leaf village."

A small smile formed on Mei's lips. On the one hand it was a catastrophic scenario, she really wanted to be in the sand council chamber, while Gaara announces his engagement not only to a Konohan, but to a man. This was cute too, sure this was bizarre, but cute. She turned and walked away, leaving the two boys alone.

The next day right before a meeting Mei decided to make her move and finally have a proper laugh. Gaara was doing the same thing, preparing the documents and unwritten papers. The mizukage took a deep breath and tried to hold back her laughter.-“Kazekage, how did it go last night with your jounin? Pleasant?”- Finally, after years full of questions and blank stares, she could see the expression of the 5th Kazekage of Suna change.-“I had a very pleasant evening... Lady Mei”- The pale eyes far from her gaze, his face even if equally serious, revealed a bit of embarrassment.

Mei was a strong and independent woman, but she dreamed of love despite not needing any man in her life. She was happy to see love in the air and, during the wedding between "The Godaime Kazekage Of Suna and Rock Lee Of Konoha" she realized that her goal was not to get married, but to find a person who looked at her with the same eyes with which Rock Lee looked at Gaara.
