Chapter Text

December 23rd was the perfect day for decorating, Though late It still worked out, Especially in the busy lives of Chuuya and Dazai. The chill of winter seeped into the city, coating Yokohama in a gentle dusting of snow that seemed to glisten under the glow of streetlights. Inside their shared apartment, however, warmth radiated from more than just the heater. Chuuya stood in the middle of the living room, arms crossed, glaring at Dazai like he wanted to strangle him—but in a loving way.

“Dazai, I swear to God, if you drop one more ornament—”

“It’s not my fault!” Dazai interrupted, holding his hands up in mock innocence. “The ornaments are slippery. Or maybe you’re just bad at choosing sturdy decorations, hmm?”

Chuuya’s eye twitched. “They’re glass. They’re supposed to be delicate! Which is why you shouldn’t be holding them!”

“Oh, come now, Chuuya,” Dazai said with a dramatic sigh, brushing invisible dust off his sweater. “You know decorating the tree is supposed to be a bonding activity. If you do everything yourself, where’s the bonding ? Plus, It’s your fault for buying the expensive ones~”

Chuuya pinched the bridge of his nose, muttering something about how “bonding” would involve duct-taping Dazai to the wall, He however also pretended not to be effected by the last comment, But in actuality— Chuuya had gone out of his way to buy the good stuff for his precious idiot.. Despite the bickering, the atmosphere in the room was cozy. The scent of pine from their freshly bought tree mixed with the faint aroma of cinnamon from a candle Chuuya had lit earlier.

“Fine,” Chuuya growled after a long pause. “Just… put the lights on the tree. You can’t possibly screw that up.”

Dazai grinned like a kid being handed candy. “Challenge accepted.”

As Chuuya unwrapped ornaments from their protective tissue paper layering, he kept an eye on Dazai. Predictably, his partner turned the simple task of stringing lights into a spectacle. Dazai draped the strands haphazardly over the branches, occasionally tangling himself up and dramatically pretending to be trapped.

“Oh no, Chuuya!” he called, flailing his arms. “The tree’s got me! Save me before it’s too late!”

Chuuya didn’t even look up. “The only thing I’m saving is my sanity.. So shut up, Got that?” Despite his grumbling, Chuuya’s lips twitched upward. In a way, He actually enjoyed Dazai’s ramblings. No. Loved them. It never failed to bring a smile on his face nowadays.

Eventually, the lights were up—crooked and uneven, but functional—and Dazai beamed at his handiwork. Chuuya sighed, deciding it wasn’t worth fixing, Plus— It certainly made an interesting memory.. A memory that Chuuya would always cherish...

The ornaments came next, and to Chuuya’s surprise, Dazai actually behaved himself for a while. They worked side by side, hanging delicate baubles and figurines, occasionally bumping shoulders. Dazai, of course, commented on every single ornament with his usual smug and teasing smile.

“Why do we have so many red and orange ones?” he mused, holding up a bronze-colored bauble. “Are you trying to match your hair, Chuuya?”

“No,” Chuuya replied dryly, “but it’s nice to know you think about my hair that much.” Chuuya smirked smugly, side eyeing his partner.

Dazai smirked. “Oh, I think about a lot of things when it comes to you, My darling Chibi .”

“Gross.” But the faint flush on Chuuya’s cheeks betrayed his tone.

When they finally reached the top of the tree, Chuuya retrieved the star from its box. It was a beautiful piece— and one of his most expensive— crafted from golden metal with intricate swirls. He held it carefully, stepping toward the tree to place it on the highest branch.

Only to be stopped by Dazai grabbing his waist.

“What the hell are you—put me down!” Chuuya snapped as Dazai lifted him effortlessly off the ground.

Dazai’s grin was as infuriating as ever. “You’re so short, Chuuya! I’m just helping you reach. I’m thoughtful like that.”

“I don’t need your help, you idiot! I was gonna use the step stool!”

“Step stools are for people who don’t have a tall, handsome boyfriend to lift them up.”

“You’re not tall! We’re the same height!”

And that was the biggest lie to have ever passed Chuuya’s lips.

Dazai ignored him, holding Chuuya aloft like he was a trophy. “Go on, my dear! Fulfill your destiny and place the star on top of the tree!”

Chuuya glared down at him, cheeks burning with a mix of embarrassment and irritation. He contemplated kicking Dazai in the face but figured that would only make him drop the star, or maybe he just didn’t feel like ruining his partners face before the Christmas photos, The questions would piss him off in the end. With a huff, he leaned forward and carefully placed the decoration on the highest branch.

“There. Happy?”

“Ecstatic,” Dazai replied, setting Chuuya down.

As soon as his feet touched the ground, Chuuya spun around and punched Dazai in the arm—not hard enough to hurt, but enough to make his point.

“Idiot,” he muttered, but his lips twitched into a reluctant smile.

Dazai rubbed his arm, pretending to wince. “Ah, the price I pay for being helpful. Such cruelty, Chuuya.”

“Shut up and help me plug the lights in.” Chuuya crumbled, turning away and leaning down to grab the power cable.

“Do you even have to bend over, Chibi~? You’re soooo short~”

“That’s it-!”

BANG

After a couple of bruises, carefully inflicted to avoid the face, the lights finally flicked on, the tree glowed warmly, the star at the top catching the light and sparkling brilliantly. For a moment, they both just stood there, admiring their work.

“It looks… nice,” Chuuya said softly, a small smile spreading across his face.

“Of course it does,” Dazai replied, slipping an arm around Chuuya’s shoulders. “We’re a great team.”

Chuuya rolled his eyes but leaned into Dazai’s side. The warm glow of the tree lit up their faces as they stood there in quiet contentment, and for once, Dazai didn’t say anything obnoxious. He just tightened his arm around Chuuya, pressing a soft kiss to his temple.

The next morning, December 24th, the apartment was quiet except for the occasional soft rustle of a blanket as Dazai stirred on the couch, where he’d unintentionally fallen asleep during a Christmas movie last time, and Chuuya hadn’t had the heart to move his sleeping beauty— Well.. Or as Chuuya would put it—If he ever admitted to it— His Sleeping Slug . Chuuya had woken up earlier and was bustling about in the kitchen, his movements swift and efficient as he made some coffee and breakfast.

Dazai lay sprawled across the couch, one arm dangling off the side. He wasn’t asleep—not fully, anyway—but he hadn’t bothered to open his eyes yet. The smell of freshly brewed coffee wafted through the room, tempting him, but he decided he’d wait for Chuuya to deliver a cup to him. Because surely Chuuya would, right? He can be both his lover and his slave.. At least that’s what— Wait—! We’re getting off topic here!

Before he could fully commit to his feigned helplessness and exhaustion; which was actually just laziness, something caught his attention.

Chuuya’s voice.

It wasn’t directed at him, though. Curious, Dazai cracked open one eye, scanning the room. He realized Chuuya was on the phone, his back turned to Dazai as he leaned against the counter.

“Yeah, it’s all ready,” Chuuya was saying, his tone light and smug. “I mean, of course it’s good. It’s me . When do I half-ass anything? Okay. Ignore that one time, This is different—!”

Dazai’s second eye opened immediately. What was this about?

There was a pause as Chuuya listened to whoever was on the other end of the line, his smirk growing.

“No, I’m not gonna tell you what it is,” Chuuya said, rolling his eyes. “It’s a surprise. I can’t wait to see his reaction, though. It’s perfect. Maybe it’ll even be enough to shock him into never speaking again!”

(Though he would secretly miss the brunettes lovely sing-song voice~)

Dazai froze. His reaction?

As much as Dazai liked to play dumb, he wasn’t actually clueless. Chuuya had to be talking about his Christmas gift. What else could it be? And if Chuuya was calling it perfect , it had to be something truly amazing. That man had expensive taste, and as much as he hated to admit it.. He knew Dazai well enough to get something even he doesn’t realise he wants—That man was insanely good at gift-buying when it came to Dazai Osamu!!

Dazai’s competitive streak flared up instantly.

“Yeah, he’s gonna love it,” Chuuya continued, oblivious to Dazai’s growing interest. “I put so much thought into it. I wanted to get him something that really… I don’t know, shows how much he means to me.”

Dazai’s heart skipped a beat. Chuuya didn’t usually talk like this—so openly sentimental. Hearing it now made Dazai feel oddly warm and a little giddy. But the warmth was quickly overtaken by panic.

He hadn’t even figured out his main gift for Chuuya yet. He figured he could just half-ass it at the end of the day, that his glorious presence was enough, But now he was done for—!

Sure, Dazai had bought some things earlier in the month—a bottle of Chuuya’s favorite wine, a designer scarf he thought would suit him—but now those seemed laughably inadequate. If Chuuya had gone all out to get something that showed his feelings, how could Dazai settle for something so generic and thoughtless in comparison?

The sound of Chuuya hanging up the phone snapped Dazai out of his thoughts. He quickly flopped back onto the couch, shutting his eyes and pretending to be asleep.

A moment later, Chuuya walked into the living room, two steaming mugs in his hands.

“Still asleep, huh?” Chuuya muttered to himself, setting one mug on the coffee table. He crouched down and leaned in close, his voice softening. “Hey, lazy. I made you coffee.”

Dazai cracked an eye open, grinning. “You’re spoiling me, Chuuya.”

“You wish.” Chuuya stood, sipping his own coffee. “Hurry up and drink it before it gets cold. And don’t even think about asking me to heat it up for you.”

Dazai chuckled, sitting up and grabbing the mug. “You’re too kind, my dear.”

Chuuya rolled his eyes but didn’t respond, retreating to the kitchen. Dazai watched him go, his mind already spinning with ideas.

If Chuuya’s gift was truly as amazing as he claimed, then Dazai would have to top it. He had no choice. Anything less would be a crime against their competitive dynamic—and his pride.

But what kind of gift could convey how he felt about Chuuya? He had to admit, Chuuya’s words from earlier lingered in his mind. Something that shows how much he means to me.

Dazai sipped his coffee, staring thoughtfully at the twinkling lights on the Christmas tree. Whatever it was, it had to be perfect.

By midmorning on Christmas Eve; Though he usually never got up this early; Dazai was out the door, bundled up against the cold in a thick scarf and coat. His breath puffed in visible clouds as he walked through the bustling streets of Yokohama, each shopfront adorned with festive wreaths and glittering lights.

Normally, Dazai would’ve taken the time to appreciate the holiday atmosphere, maybe teased a few carolers, or stolen a sample from a bakery giving away Christmas cookies. But today, he was on a mission—a mission to find the gift that would blow Chuuya away.

He started at the local department store, striding confidently into the glittering aisles filled with everything from designer clothing to the latest gadgets. Dazai’s first idea came as soon as he saw a massive display of plushies.

Maybe Chuuya would like a giant stuffed animal. Something cute, like a… reindeer or a penguin.

He picked up a ridiculously oversized reindeer plush, big enough to take up half their couch. For a second, he pictured Chuuya’s expression: the mix of annoyance and confusion as he tried to figure out where to put such a monstrosity. Dazai laughed to himself but ultimately shook his head.

“No, no. It’s not romantic enough,” he muttered. He set the plush back down, patting its head apologetically.

Next, Dazai wandered into the jewelry section. Rows of glittering necklaces, bracelets, and watches sparkled under the bright lights.

Jewelry’s always a good choice, right? It’s expensive, flashy, and shows effort.

He inspected a silver watch with an elegant black face, imagining how it would look on Chuuya’s wrist. But the more he thought about it, the less it felt like the right fit.

“Chuuya already has fancy watches,” Dazai muttered, setting it back down. “He’d probably just say, ‘What, you think I don’t know how to pick out my own accessories?’”

He sighed dramatically, earning a few strange looks from nearby shoppers, but he didn’t care. On to the next idea.

The next few hours were a blur of trial and error.

At one store, Dazai found a sleek leather jacket. He actually carried it to the checkout before realizing Chuuya already owned three jackets that looked exactly like it.

At another shop, he considered a custom wine set with personalized glasses, only to reject the idea as too impersonal.

By midafternoon, Dazai was wandering aimlessly, his brain buzzing with possibilities but none of them quite right. He passed a flower shop, a bakery, even a pet store (where he briefly debated getting Chuuya a puppy—But maybe his dis comfort and fear may be worth more than his love in this one scenario, He could only imagine the damage, But maybe he could have trained it to do something cool.. Like pooping in Chuuya’s shoes, Doesn’t matter anyway— CAUSE HE IS NOT GETTING A DOG!! Though that thought was supposed to sound calm.. Chuuya would probably name it something like Dazai Jr to annoy/ freak him out anyway..), but nothing seemed worthy of the effort Chuuya had put into his own gift.

Finally, as the sun began to dip low in the sky, casting the streets in a golden glow, Dazai sat down on a bench near the waterfront. The quiet lapping of the waves helped clear his head, but his frustration lingered.

“What the hell am I supposed to do?” he muttered, leaning back and staring up at the fading light. “I need something meaningful. Something that says… that says he’s everything to me.”

The answer hit him like a lightning bolt.

An engagement ring.

The idea was so obvious, Dazai couldn’t believe he hadn’t thought of it sooner. It wasn’t just a gift—it was a promise, a declaration of how much Chuuya meant to him.

The thought of proposing had crossed Dazai’s mind before, of course. But he’d always figured it could wait. They weren’t exactly a traditional couple, and he didn’t think Chuuya cared much about formalities. Still, if there was ever a time to go all out, wasn’t Christmas perfect?

Determined, Dazai stood practically sprinted back to the jewelry store, his heart pounding.

Inside, the shop was quiet and warm, with rows of rings glittering under soft lights. Dazai wandered the displays, feeling a strange mix of excitement and nervousness. After a few minutes, an older woman approached him with a kind smile.

“Looking for something special?” she asked.

Dazai nodded. “I need an engagement ring. Something… perfect.”

The woman chuckled. “Christmas proposal, Huh? I think we can find something.” She smiled warmly.

Dazai almost became reluctant because the way she said it made it sound common, But he just rounded it up to the fact it was Christmas Eve.. And he was a bit late.. How Embarrassing..

She showed him several rings, each one stunning in its own way. Dazai examined them carefully, turning each over in his fingers. He finally settled on a simple yet elegant design—a platinum band with a single, brilliant diamond. It wasn’t overly flashy, but it had a timeless beauty that reminded him of Chuuya.

“I’ll take this one,” Dazai said, his voice unusually soft.

As the jeweler rang him up, he felt a twinge of nervousness. What if Chuuya thought it was too much? What if he wasn’t ready? But as he slipped the ring box into his pocket (Afraid he may drop it somewhere or something else stupid..), and stepped back out into the evening air, his resolve hardened.

This was the right choice.

That evening, as Dazai returned home, he found Chuuya in the kitchen, finishing up dinner. The apartment smelled amazing—garlic, herbs, and something rich and savory, whilst also making sure Dazai had a proper diet.

“You’re late,” Chuuya said without looking up from the pot he was stirring. “Where the hell have you been?”

Dazai smirked, slipping off his coat and scarf. “Oh, you know. Just out spreading holiday cheer.”

Chuuya snorted. “Right. Because you’re not annoying at all.”

“Maybe I am,” Dazai replied, leaning against the counter. “Or maybe I was getting into trouble.”

Chuuya glanced at him, narrowing his eyes. “If you did something stupid—”

“Relax, darling. I was on my best behavior.”

Chuuya rolled his eyes but didn’t push further. Dazai smiled to himself, feeling the light and gentle weight of the ring box in his pocket.

Tomorrow just couldn’t come fast enough..

Dazai stirred awake to the faint sound of movement in the kitchen and the smell of something sweet wafting through the apartment. He blinked a few times, his face half-buried in the soft pillow as his brain slowly caught up.

It was Christmas morning.

A warm smile tugged at his lips as he turned to glance at the other side of the bed—it was empty, of course. Chuuya was already up, no doubt bustling around the kitchen with his usual precision.

The apartment was quiet except for the occasional clang of a pan or the sound of something sizzling. Dazai stretched lazily, listening to the muffled Christmas music Chuuya had put on. He could recognize it faintly: All I Want for Christmas Is You.

Dazai chuckled softly to himself. “I bet he’s singing along under his breath,” he murmured, rolling out of bed and padding toward the kitchen.

As he rounded the corner, the sight before him was so ridiculously charming that it took everything in him not to pull out his phone and take a picture to share with everyone they knew.

Chuuya stood at the stove, wearing an apron adorned with little holly patterns. His hair was pulled back in a loose ponytail, a rare sight that Dazai always found endearing. On the counter sat a plate of pancakes shaped like reindeer—complete with whipped cream eyes and chocolate chip noses.

“Good morning, Chibi~ !” Dazai called, leaning casually against the doorway.

Chuuya startled slightly, glancing over his shoulder with a scowl. “Do you always have to sneak up on me?”

“Not sneaking,” Dazai said, grinning as he wandered closer. “Just admiring. Are those reindeer pancakes?”

Chuuya turned back to the stove, flipping the last pancake onto the plate. “Yeah, well, it’s Christmas. Figured I’d do something festive.”

Dazai couldn’t resist stepping behind Chuuya, wrapping his arms around his waist and resting his chin on Chuuya’s shoulder. “Aren’t you the perfect little house-husband~?”

Chuuya immediately elbowed him in the ribs, though there wasn’t much force behind it. “Don’t push your luck, Dazai.”

Dazai laughed, planting a kiss on Chuuya’s cheek before stepping back. “You’re too cute, you know that~?”

“Go set the table,” Chuuya muttered, though his ears had turned a faint shade of red.

Breakfast was a cozy affair. They sat together at the small dining table, the tree lights twinkling in the background. Dazai made a point to compliment the pancakes every other bite, much to Chuuya’s annoyance.

“They’re just pancakes, Dazai.”

“They’re art, Chuuya. You’ve outdone yourself.”

“I will throw this fork at you.”

Dazai grinned, popping a chocolate chip into his mouth. Despite his teasing, he couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of contentment. These quiet, domestic moments with Chuuya were some of his favorite.

When breakfast was over, Chuuya cleared the table while Dazai lingered by the tree, pretending to inspect the ornaments. In reality, his hand kept brushing the small box in his pocket, his heart racing at the thought of what was about to happen.

“You ready for presents?” Chuuya called from the kitchen.

Dazai turned, grinning. “Always.”

They sat together on the floor by the tree, surrounded by a modest pile of wrapped gifts. The room felt warm and bright, the snow outside visible through the window.

“Okay,” Chuuya said, grabbing one of the gifts and handing it to Dazai. “This one’s from me. Open it.”

Dazai raised an eyebrow. “No, no, no. I insist— you go first.”

Chuuya frowned. “We’re not starting this again.”

“Starting what?”

“This thing where you make me open my gift first so you can act smug about whatever ridiculous thing you’ve done,” Chuuya said, crossing his arms.

Dazai gasped dramatically. “Chuuya, I would never!”

Chuuya leveled him with a deadpan stare. “Fine. Let’s do it at the same time.”

Dazai blinked, surprised. “What, like a countdown?”

“Yeah,” Chuuya said, grabbing a small box from under the tree—Dazai’s gift. “On three, we both show ours. No arguing.”

Dazai hesitated for a moment, his hand sliding into his pocket to retrieve the ring box. His heart pounded as he met Chuuya’s determined gaze.

“Deal,” Dazai said, his voice unusually soft.

Chuuya seemed a little surprised by the lack of resistance but didn’t comment.

“All right,” Chuuya said, holding his box up. “One…”

Dazai mirrored him, his palm sweating slightly as he clutched the small velvet box.

“Two…”

Chuuya’s lips quirked into a small smile. The small sounds of shuffling heard.

“Three.”

They both opened their boxes at the same time.

For a moment, the room was utterly silent. They were both knelt on one knee in front of one another.

Dazai stared at the ring in Chuuya’s hands—a delicate band of gold with a single sapphire nestled in the center. His brain stalled as the realization hit him like a freight train.

At the same time, Chuuya’s eyes widened, fixed on the ring in Dazai’s hand.

“Are you—”

“Did you—”

They both stopped, staring at each other in disbelief.

And then, almost simultaneously, they burst into laughter.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Chuuya said, shaking his head. “Of course you’d pull something like this.”

“Me? What about you?” Dazai shot back, though his tone was light and teasing. “Trying to steal my thunder, huh?”

Chuuya snorted, though his cheeks were flushed. “This is so ridiculous.”

“Ridiculously perfect,” Dazai said, his grin softening. He shifted, sliding to one knee and holding the ring out properly. “Well, I suppose there’s no harm in making it official, is there?”

Chuuya rolled his eyes but followed suit, dropping to one knee and holding out his own ring. “You’re impossible.”

“And yet, you’re still here,” Dazai replied, his voice warm. “Chuuya Nakahara, will you marry me?”

Chuuya smirked, though there was an undeniable softness in his gaze. “Only if you say yes first.”

“Deal.”

Their laughter bubbled up again as they leaned in, their foreheads touching briefly before their lips met in a kiss. The rings sat forgotten for a moment as the twinkling lights of the tree cast their shadows on the wall.

When they finally pulled back, Dazai grinned. “Merry Christmas, fiancé.”

Chuuya rolled his eyes but couldn’t suppress his smile. “Merry Christmas, idiot.”
