Chapter Text
They had defeated Hive, but Lincoln and Andrew were dead, Bobbi and Hunter had been disavowed, and Daisy had run away. All that, added onto the fact that Coulson had stepped down as the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., meant that Melinda May had had a really bad month all in all.
She was in her bunk about the events that had happened when she heard a knock on her door. It was Coulson. She recognised the way he knocked. "Come in, Coulson."
He opened the door and stepped inside. "How did you know that it was me?" he asked, closing the door behind him.
"I have my ways," she smirked. She noticed what he was holding. A plastic plate with a sandwich. It was a cheese sandwich. Simple, but her favourite.
Coulson held the plate out. "For you, Agent May!" he said. She rolled her eyes and took the plate, trying to keep the warmth from her face. She couldn't help but fall in love with him just a little bit more. He had no idea of course. Hopefully, he never would. It would remain her secret. She would never tell anyone this, but she was secretly afraid of being rejected by him if he were to find out about her true feelings for him.
He sat down on the bed next to her. "Is this supposed to be some kind of date?" she asked. It was meant to be a joke. Of course, a date with Coulson was what she had wanted for years.
Coulson's face went bright red. "No," he answered way to fast. Melinda raised an eyebrow. "Maybe." He thought about it. "Yes. But only if you want it to be?" It was now Melinda's turn to blush. Was he actually asking her out? She took a rather undignified bite of the sandwich he had made for her, to avoid answering his question. When she nearly choked on it, Phil looked at her in concern. That just made things worse. Finally, she managed to swallow the sandwich. "Are you ok?" Phil asked. Melinda nodded, taking note of how close his face was to hers.
"I'm fine," she said and took a deep breath. "And, to answer your previous question, it could be a date. A date that's not a date, though." She smiled.
Phil smiled back. "That sounds ok to me." She finished one half of the sandwich then offered the other half to Phil. He took it, but split it in half and gave one half to her. She loved him so much, and she couldn't even tell him without her throat closing up in fear.
