Grief

Summary:

Link and Sidon pay Mipha's statue at Mipha Court a visit. They bring blue lotuses, her favorite plant.

This oneshot is told in first person from Link's perspective.

Work Text:

The sun was setting over the mountains of Lanayru. Mipha and I sat upon the divine beast known as Vah Ruta. Mipha was healing a wound on my arm. We were silent, until she spoke up.

“This reminds me of the time we first met,” Mipha said. “You were just a reckless child, always getting hurt.”

I remembered this. Indeed, the first time I came to Zora’s Domain, I was injured. Mipha had healed me. I still remembered how the healing magic felt to this very day.

“Every time, I would heal you. I was always willing to heal your wounds, even back then.”

She finished healing my arm. My arm looked completely fine now. If anything, it looked even better than before it had been healed.

Mipha looked out at the sunset. “So if this Calamity Ganon does, in fact, return, what can we really do? We just don’t seem to know much about what we’ll be up against.”

I nodded. I couldn’t say I disagreed.

“But… I want you to know that no matter what turn the battle takes… I’ll always be there to heal you. It doesn’t matter when, or how bad. And once this is all over… maybe we could spend some time together.”

…

I woke up and opened my eyes. I was in the inn at Zora’s Domain.

It was a dream.

Again…

I sat up and got out of bed.

Beside my bed was the Zora Armor. The Zora Armor Mipha had crafted for me back then. It fit me so perfectly. She had made it for me and only me.

I traced my fingers over the cool fabric and scales of the armor. It was a beautiful blue color. Almost all of my other clothing has been dyed with different colors, but this is the only clothing I will never dye. EVER. I won’t alter it in any way. It’s perfect the way it is. Mipha told me she did everything she could to make it perfect… and it is.

I put the armor on and left the inn. Outside, by the entrance to Zora’s Domain, was Sidon. It seemed he had gotten up before me.

“Good morning Link,” Sidon said. “Are you ready to go?”

I nodded.

“Then let’s go.”

We left Zora’s Domain together and ascended Ploymus Mountain. On the way up, I made sure to pick plenty of blue lotuses. They were Mipha’s favorite plant.

And picking these blue lotuses… it reminded me of the time she had told me they were her favorite plant. I had gone out to find as many of them as I could. They were surprisingly hard to find… I had to scour the Lanayru region and fight my way through many monsters to get as many as I could, which ended up being a large bundle. It wasn’t bad, but I still wish I could’ve gotten her more… so much more… I wish the plant wasn’t that rare… though I suppose that makes the ones I bring her all the more valuable.

When we made it to the top of the mountain, we headed to Mipha Court, where Mipha’s statue was. It was carved from luminous stone and given silver ornamentation. It was as beautiful as ever. Someone had worked on carving that for hours, days, weeks, or even longer… and their hard work paid off. It captured her image perfectly.

But still… it couldn’t compare to the real person.

Mipha.

My friend, my ally, my lover, my reason to live, my everything.

She was always there for me, no matter what.

But I couldn’t be there for her.

I couldn’t be there for her when it mattered the most.

I’ve considered taking my life a few times. Maybe it wouldn’t be that bad an idea. At least, that way I could see her again. And Ganon is gone… it’s not like anyone needs me anymore…

No. No, I can’t do that.

Mipha wants me to live. She wants me to live, and be healthy, and be happy.

So as much as everything hurts… as much as all I want to do is die… I have to push through. Because… I couldn’t save her, but the very least I could do is honor her wishes.

With shaking hands, I set down the blue lotuses I picked in front of Mipha’s statue. Sidon did the same.

Goodbye, Mipha. We miss you.
