Work Text:
When they walked into the room, Andrea frowned- the dress looked like a whole new style in itself... unique, eccentric. In a good way!
"I was thinking about picking between these two belts to go with it but I don't know which one." A girl said.
After a quick glance up, the brunette couldn't keep in a snort of laughter.
"What's so funny Andrea?" Miranda raised an eyebrow.
Fuck, what was she gonna do now?
"Well, uh- I just think it's an obvious decision to make." She bit her lip as Emily's eyes narrowed at her.
"Do enlighten us then, which would you pick?"
Taking a deep breath, Andy stepped closer to the two belts and looked between them and the dress. She blew out a low whistle- then pointed at the one on the right.
"The belt buckle matches the design more than this one," she pointed at the left, "and it would just finish it off perfectly- create a new style completely whereas the other one would just make it boring." She stopped to take a deep breath, not looking at anyone around her.
"And if I could make a suggestion? From what I saw in the back, you have a belt with a darker shade and the exact same shaped belt buckle, just gold. Use that one."
Looking at the others around her, they had blank facial expressions- until Miranda snapped at the girl.
"Well, you heard Andrea- go get the belt." There was a surprised undertone behind her voice, and a mysterious glint in her eye.
"O-of course Miranda."
After she came back and showed it to Andrea, she nodded.
"This one would match more, in my opinion I mean, I clearly have no style according to you guys so-"
"Stop talking."
She shut her mouth, backing away. She felt like crying, what was she thinking?!
"Use the belt Andrea recommended. As much as I hate to say it, she's right."
Emily's and Nigel's jaws dropped. Andy's mind stuttered.
"Miranda, are you sure-?"
"That's all." She was looking intensely at the dress, not making eye contact with anyone in the room.
They all left, leaving her alone. Emily and Nigel pulled Andy aside almost instantly.
"What in the world wide fuck was that?" Nigel started.
"Are you after my job, Sachs?" Emily frowned.
"What? I- did that just happen?"
"Yeah it happened! And I'm still in denial about it." Emily pinched her nose bridge with her thumb and middle finger.
"Andrea, you just- do you understand what you have just done?" Nigel took her by the shoulders.
"Well- no, not really-" She heard Emily sigh and look at her with, pride? Admiration?
"Jesus christ- let's just go back to the office before Miranda kills us."
They headed back, separating with Nigel on the way there.
When Andy sat back at her desk, she burrowed her head in her hands. She felt Emily's gaze on her and looked up- to which her colleague quickly averted her eyes from her to the computer screen.
Everything was going fine, it was around 9:30pm and both their and Miranda's office was so quiet, you could hear an earring drop and actually be able to find it.
"Andrea."
Andy widened her eyes- that wasn't Emily's voice with that gorgeous British accent.
She looked up in slight fear and saw Emily looking at her with an encouraging look.
"You'll be fine." she mouthed and looked back at her monitor.
The brunette quickly stood up and took a deep breath before heading into Miranda's office.
"Close the door."
She did just that.
"So- uh... you wanted to speak to me?"
Miranda took off her glasses and rubbed her eyes.
"How did you do that?"
That caught Andy off guard- what does she mean?
"D-do what?"
"Oh you know damn well, how did you somehow with all odds against you- manage to actually create something that has a sense of style?!" She snapped.
The look in her eyes was saying the opposite of what her tone was though.
They gleamed with pride, slight melancholy and longing. It made Andrea's breath hitch just by looking at them and she couldn't formulate an answer.
"Well- I saw they had a similar belt in the back, like I said, so I just... I don't know? I just said what I thought that's all." She was struggling to explain herself, and Miranda's expression hadn't changed.
Then again, she looks hot when she's angry.
...
Wait what?
"You surprise me, Andrea Sachs. Out of all the things you could've done, I would have never expected this."
". . . Is that a good thing, or-?"
Miranda stood up came round to lean on her desk, body fully facing Andy
"Let me put it this way. If your mind ever comes up with an acceptable idea, tell me, Nigel or Emily."
"How about a date?"
Silence.
What the fuck was that? What was she thinking?! This is Miranda Priestley for fucks sake-
"A. . . date?"
"Well, more like a shared lunch- actually no just, forget I said anything." Andy turned to leave, embarrassed. But stopped when she felt a hand on her wrist.
"I mean- I don't usually share my lunch time with anyone. So why not?"
Are her ears deceiving her?
"Oh- um. Cool! I'll just- come by tomorrow at lunch. We can, talk or something . . . yeah." Okay this was getting a bit awkward.
She just asked her boss out for a date, and she said yes? Not only that but they're freakishly close right now and it's making Andrea's brain short-circuit.
"Or something..." Miranda backed away quickly, clearly flustered and cleared her throat.
"Anyways- that's all."
"Of course." Andrea left the office and sat back at her desk. Emily was still there and looked at her with an eyebrow raised, and saw the second assistant massage her temples.
"So?"
She looked up, a delighted smile playing on her lips.
"I may or may not accidentally have asked Miranda out on a lunch date."
". . ."
"I'm sorry- WHAT?!"
