Chapter Text
The night sky was filled with bright, fiery stars and lights of the National City Pier highlighting each of the waves crashing on the beautiful beach. Couples walking down the sand holding hands, it was truly a beautiful night. Two miles into the city is the polar opposite, the biggest and most dangerous battle of Supergirl’s life about to break out in a large penthouse. Gamenight .
“He was cheating! You- you cheater!” Lena Luthor yells at Brainiac-5 across the large game room. “We all agreed on no powers! You connected to the game server and gave yourself another boost!” yelling, trying to throw her game controller at his head but accidentally hits Kara’s.
“Ow!” Kara retaliates, scrubbing her head where it hit and kicks Lena next to her as a reflex.
“Oh my gosh, Kara I’m so sorry!.” She says with her hands over her mouth out of surprise then hugs Kara as they sit on the couch facing the large flat screen TV in Lena’s famous game room. “To be fair, bullets don’t pierce your skin. And I was trying to hit him instead!” then turns and points a bitter finger at Brainy. “You’re just lucky we’re not playing go fish like last week.” leaving a sharp scowl on her face. The room was full of laughter, with all of Lena’s favorite voices– Alex, Kelly, Brainy, Nia, Sam, Mon-El, Winn, and the loudest cackle in the room, Kara Danvers. It was Lena’s turn to host the group’s Saturday night game-night. Whenever she hosts everybody has their usual spots in the room, Kelly and Alex on the couch by the big window under a blanket, Brainy and Nia cuddling on the big bean bag in between the couch by the bar and the one by the window, Sam by the fireplace (she always insists having it running even in the middle of summer) sitting on a white leather lounge chair, Winn, Mon-El, and J’onn sitting behind the island of the mini bar facing the TV, finally with Kara and Lena sitting criss-cross applesauce on the gray canvas couch, knees touching side by side in the middle of all the furniture. There’s no other way Lena would rather spend her these nights.
“This happens every time Querl,” Alex chuckles as she tips the remainder of her glass of scotch into her mouth with her free arm around Kelly.
“I told you don’t call me that!” Brainy turns behind him to give Mon-El a commanding nod that leads to Mon-El rushing over to Alex and jumps on top of her, Kelly shimmies off of the couch to avoid being collateral damage, and gives Alex a noogie like she’s his little brother.
“And I told you not to cheat tonight!” she yelled, pushing him off, smoothing her hair back down.
“Why are you mad?! I’m the one who had a remote thrown at my head!” Kara yells back pointing at an invisible red spot on her forehead.
“You’re fine!” the older Danvers and Mon-El yell back at Kara at the same time.
“I need a refill if this is gonna be happening all night.” Lena gets up as she watches the chaos breakout and heads to the bar where Winn sits. “I’ll have more Domaine de la Romanée.” she tells him nonchalantly as it’s the most expensive wine in the world.
“One 250,000 dollar cup of wine comin’ up.” Winn replies with his famous chuckle that shows a little bit of his double chin, Lena looking up at him, twinkling eyes filled with joy and the edges of her mouth curling up.
“I’ll have some of that.” Sam skips up behind Lena and puts her cup up to the bottle.
“Can you even drink alcohol when breastfeeding?” Winn hesitates to pour a glass for her.
“Ruby’s 3! You were at her party last week!” Sam snaps back and grabs the bottle from him. Lena chuckles as she sips her glass watching the two bicker.
“I want some too!” Mon-El’s distressed voice shouts as he runs over to the bar after being chased off of the couch by Alex.
“Mhm, I’m not letting you drink 100,000 dollars of wine and say it was gross and doesn’t even affect your Daxamite genes.” Lena says, shaking her head with some of the red drink in her mouth.
“Fine.” he grunts, rolling his eyes with his muscular arms folded across his chest but still manages to look like a toddler with a frown on his face. Lena goes back to her seat next to Kara, Sam follows and sits on the other side of her.The boys stay at the bar talking football. “Hey, can we watch Mean Girls and play Monopoly again?” Mon-El called out from the bar.
“We watched that for our girls' movie night at my place last night.” Kara yells back still watching the TV as Kelly and Alex race Rainbow Road. “Why don’t we watch 10 Things I hate about you . You’ve never seen that one.”
“No, no that one makes me cry every time,” Lena interjects, shaking her head and looking at Kara.
“Why? It’s a happy ending.” Kelly replies to Lena.
“It just pains me to see Kat hurt so badly over Patrick… I just love love.” Frowning and holding her hand over her chest.
“Hmm amen.” Kara looks at Lena and cheers her coke can to her wine glass.
“I say we watch The Avengers,” Winn chimes in.
“Absolutely not! I mean a guy that gets angry and turns into a big green meanie? It’s so unrealistic!” Kara flings her arms out to the side and cuts in. Everybody else turns and shoots her an annoyed and surprised looking at the irony of the sentence that just spat out of her mouth.
“Says the girl who can fly, has superspeed, superstrength, has gone to the future and back here, and then as a cherry on top with laser eyes.” Sam says, giving her a glare but still chuckling.
“Fine we can watch avengers,” through gritted teeth and everybody else groaning out of relief after she compromises, “but if and only if we order pizza in!”
“Ah, I love your hope in humanity Kara Danvers. But no.” Lena tilts her head to look at her and hooks her left arm around Kara and her right around sam. Kara rolls her eyes and leans into Lena’s shoulder as she clicks the remote to watch the movie. “No you have to use the blue remote-“ Taking her arm off of Sam and leans over Kara to reach the coffee table and grab the correct remote but is interrupted by the news on the television.
Lex Luthor now claims his sister has now, quote, “Turned him into what he is now.”. A reporter says behind a news casting desk.
The room breaks silent until Lena bluntly says to turn it to the movie. “The remote isn’t working, I-I’m trying.” Kara replies, smacking the remote against the palm of her hand. More news continues about Lex’s mental downfall with each word blurring in her eardrums that she tunes out as the horrific lies continue. Lena feels warmth behind her eyes, water welling in each corner of her bright greens with a click of the device turning off as she simply stands up and walks to the bathroom down an open hall to the right of the large game room. Entering the dimly lit room leaning her hands against the cold marble counter, silent, painful tears rolling down her tender rosy cheeks, “Lena-,” hearing the echo of her best friend's voice outside of the room, followed by a soft knock on the door. “No no don’t cry, when you cry I cry and I’m not wearing waterproof mascara.” walking in, leading with her hands reaching out in front of her and a frown on her face. Turning Lena to face herself placing her hands on the side of Lena’s shoulders, swiping her thumbs back and forth feeling her shaking and trembling.
“I’m just so tired of not being able to make people see I’m not bad.” muffled, leaning into Kara’s muscular shoulder.
“I know, me too.” Kara says empathetically and a frown falls on her face. Straightening her arms and putting her forehead against Lenas, “In my eyes and everybody else’s out there,” pointing her hand to the room outside, “you’re pretty good. Amazing. The very best. Are we enough?”
“More than enough.” smiling while she feels the warmth of Kara’s head against her own. She could feel her heart hitting the edges of her chest faster than Kara’s superspeed. She knows that Kara can hear it with her super hearing, but she didn’t care. Lena felt like the earth stopped moving, everything so slow, able to see the dust particles falling in the air, watching their figures in the mirror feeling like it was just them in the world.
“You’re my best friend, I have absolutely no idea what I’d do without you.” Kara says contentedly. Her eyes closed, a smile and calmness so strong that makes the pain and sadness she feels for how Lena must be feeling absent. She weaves her head to the right side of Lena’s, soft cheeks grazing ever so slightly against one another and burying her head in the crook of Lena’s neck wrapping her arms around her with her hands resting on her back and caressing the soft silk blouse on Lena, feeling the pulse of her best friend quicken with each beat. She embraces her tightly, wanting to stay there for so long. Forever.
“Everything okay?” two familiar and soft voices disrupt the perfection of that moment. Sam, peering her head in the bathroom with one hand holding the edge of the doorframe and Nia on her tippy toes to lean over her. Kara abruptly peaks up and turns around while Lena wipes the fallen tears off of her cheek and sniffles her nose.
“Ye-yeah, everything’s great.” Nodding and acting like she hadn’t been dragged through the despicable and disgusting mud of words that come out of Lex Luthor’s mouth. Lillian taught her how to cover emotions and “Be a real woman” from a very young age.
“Brainy got the TV working!” Winn yelled from the other room.
“Guess that’s our cue.” Kara clears her throat as a snap back to reality, smoothing down the spot on Lena’s blouse that she was twisting between her fingers when they were hugging. The four exit the room with Sam and Nia leading in front. The two follow behind with their arms linked together as they walk back through the brightly lit hallway that shocks their eyes from the dimly lit bathroom. Lena lets out a deep and relaxed sigh of being so content being in Kara’s warm presence, but is cut short of her sliding in front of Lena to catch a football that was thrown at her. “Winn what the hell?” she blurted out, holding the football in her right hand winding up to throw it at him so hard it’ll knock his head straight off.
“Sorry Kara!” He flinches and goes into a weird pose with his leg bent in front of him and both of his arms covering his face.
“Not me you idiot.” pointing behind her to Lena, but still staring at Winn dead in the eyes with her arms folded across her chest and her weight shifted to one hip to let him know she means business. Secretly Lena loved how protective and strong Kara was with her.
“I’m sorry Lena.” Shifting back to a more normal standing position and apologizing with undertones of shame.
“It’s fine, really.” forcing the sides of her mouth to form a somewhat convincing smile after wanting to let out all of her tears into Kara’s shoulder. They go back to where they were sitting before the news fiasco and watch the movie together. As the film goes on Kara gets more and more sleepy, eyes closing, head bobbing. By the end of the film her head is resting on Lena’s shoulder in the dark on the soft couch beneath them. She heard everybody else leave except for the woman she was leaning on, but decided not to wake up to say bye. After about 2 hours a deep rumbling sound next to her wakes her up and her senses slowly start to come back after falling into a deep and comfortable sleep. She’s barely awake and can hear a soft voice say something but isn’t able to understand it; the blurred vision gets more clear as she rubs her eyes to wake up. She looks to her right to see Lena on her shoulder asleep and sleep talking. Kara knew she talked in her sleep and snored but had forgotten it was this loud since they hadn’t had a sleepover in so long. She wants to stay there forever knowing that she just had the best couple hours of sleep she’s had in a while. But she can’t. She can’t keep imagining things like this with Lena. Imagining life with her because she knows if she takes a wrong step that it could destroy their relationship. She slightly adjusts her position because her foot is falling asleep but in doing so she wakes up Lena.
“What time is it?” Lena said with a deep and groggy voice, nuzzling into Kara’s side more comfortably.
“I don’t know,” Kara lifts up her phone to see that it’s dead, “I’ll go check what it says on the oven.” in a soft whisper that can only be heard right next to her.
“No no don’t go, it’s fine. I’m too comfortable.” her eyes are still closed, her voice is still in her deeper, sleepy tone. Kara can tell Lena doesn’t want to move because she doesn’t either.
“Is it okay if I stay here tonight?”
“Of course, Kara.” She can feel the nod in her shoulder and can feel her soft cheek caress the skin of her shoulder.

Kara woke up on her side lying down with her glasses askew and a blanket tossed over her with her mouth hanging open and watering to the smell of bacon. She’s comforted by the sound of a soft voice humming, and quickly sits up and turns around to see Lena standing at the stove, hips slowly swaying side to side, humming Mary J. Blige. She’s shocked by a whoosh of wind behind her sitting at the kitchen island and turns around to see a messy haired Kara with her head resting on her hands with a wide smile spread across her face. “Don’t get your hopes up, the bacon’s for me. There’s a kale quiche for you in the oven right now.” Lena snickers with a sarcastic smile and sets a steaming plate of bacon in front of Kara.
“If that were true Lena Luthor, we would not be best friends.” She takes off her glasses and fiddles with them in her hands, looking up with a joking look and chuckling with a twinkle in her eyes.
“Ha-ha,” slowly and sarcastically as she rolls her eyes “There’s some of your favorite orange juice in the fridge too.” as she walks around the island to sit next to Kara, nodding her head to the fridge but is interrupted by a blur of light flash behind her.
“When are you gonna tell me where you get this stuff from?” sitting back down chugging every last bit of the drink.
“For how long it took you to tell me you were supergirl.”
“So, in 10 minutes?” taking a break from her plate of bacon to say that. “I lied,” turning into a more gentle voice as she sets her fist full of bacon down, the change in tone making Lena quirk an eyebrow that urges Kara to continue. “About who I first told.”
“I thought it was Alex?”
“It was you… I-I didn’t tell Alex first because I thought she would be mad since they wanted me to be able to have a ‘normal’ life. I chose you because I knew you would be accepting, and it wouldn’t change us.”
“I’m glad that I’m the first person you told,” putting her hand on top of Kara’s hand that’s not full of bacon. “But I think your morning bacon breath is more dangerous than any purple alien that wants to kill me.” as she put a finger in her mouth and fake gagged. Kara turns and takes a deep breath in and exhales into Lena’s face. She shrieks at the rancid smell that hit her nose and lightly hit the top of Kara’s head.
*beep*
“Oh thank goodness, that’s my quiche.” she gets up sliding on the hardwood floor in her socks to the oven.
“Someday you’re gonna slip.” smiling with a mouth full of bacon.
“Well it’s good I have someone with superspeed and strength in my kitchen.” raising her eyebrows as she pulls the hot dish out of the oven. She sets it down leaning over the island to set it where she was sitting before. Once again sliding to get back to her seat, but is unsuccessful this time and falls straight onto her butt. Kara hears a thump and slowly walks over to where Lena is sprawled out on the floor.
“Oops, guess I was too slow to catch ya.” chuckling as she shrugs and leans her hand down to help her up off of the floor. Lena grabs her hand but sweeps Kara’s leg from under her and brings her down to the ground right next to her. She fell on her stomach knocking the wind out of her but is still able to uncontrollably cackle with her hair spread across the back of her head in a messy kind of way. But the cute kind of messy way.
“Ah ow!” rotating to her backside arching her back up, stretching what got “hurt” during her fall. “Where’d you learn that move?” smiling, moving her head slightly to face Lena.
“Your sister. Last week.” holding eye contact as she brushes a stray piece of hair out of Kara’s face and tucks it behind her ear.
“We haven’t hung out like this in so long. I’ve missed it.” giving a small smile that makes her eyes twinkle in the corners and rotates back onto her backside and looks at the ceiling and sits there in the calm silence for a few seconds. “I used to put stickers of dolphins on my bedroom ceiling and I would just keep myself up at night looking at them pretending they’re jumping in and out of the waves.” turning into a softer, and sweeter voice pointing up to the ceiling of imaginary sea creatures. Lena always compared her soft voice to french ganache au chocolat poured at the perfect temperature that makes it fall at the perfect pace.
“What are you doing tonight at 6:30?” Lena matched the soft tone of Kara’s voice.
“I have to help Alex interrogate this alien, then hopefully I’m hanging out with my best friend?”
“Great minds think alike. Meet me at my beach house at that time.”
“Hold up, since when did you have a beach house?” sitting up and propping herself up with her arms straightened behind her but still holding eye contact with Lena.
“Since when did you ask questions that you know the answer to?” matching Kara’s upright position, resting her body weight on her right arm and raising an eyebrow.
“Oh, beach house as in the code you use for the Fat Huey’s Pizza that's by the beach so that people don’t think you eat stuff other than kale?”Lena snaps her hand and points a finger at her and nods to signal she gave the right answer. “I gotta go, my boss is gonna be pissed at me. ” quickly standing up and Lena follows. Kara scrambles to grab all of her things, runs around the island to shove her mouth full of the endless bacon, rushes to the bathroom to do her hair, opens the door and right before she steps out she’s interrupted by a sweet voice that gives her butterflies whenever she hears it caress her ears. Lena’s sitting on top of the kitchen island with her feet swaying ever so slightly, giving her eyebrows a quick flash and a little smile,
“Oh don’t worry, she’s already pissed at you for eating all of her bacon.” She notices Kara’s glasses still resting on the kitchen counter and delicately picks them up before tossing them to Kara at the door, “And uh, don’t forget these Supergirl.”
“You always remember when I don’t”, Kara says with one foot out the door giving Lena the signature sweet twinkly-eyed Danvers sisters smile before walking the other foot out and closing the door behind her.
