Work Text:
The peoples of the tower were united. There were still bumps in the road to overcome- some took to the new languages with more ease than others. The Traveler was trying to assist where they could, but they had something else on their mind. Scribbling rapidly in that journal of theirs, pacing about outside the church. Finally, all they could do was head inside and try to explain what they had seen.
"Hello-" they greeted the Devotee's by the altar nervously, looking down at what they had written in their journal, then back up at them. "I found the preacher-"
"You found the preacher?!" "Where is he?" "Take us to him-" "Why did he leave??"
They were overwhelmed by the influx of questions, taking a small step back. Looking rapidly back down at their journal, trying to get the right words out, "Preacher is- death- not-up, in cemetery?"
A brief moment of silence, before one voice piped up, "What? What do you mean?"
"We haven't found the preacher- he cannot be buried-"
"The Preacher is dead..?"
"S-stop!" the Traveler raised his voice above the rests- taking a breath in the following silence, trying to steady himself under all of their gazes. "When I found a way to ascend the tower, I found the preachers body. It is in a hidden place beneath the graveyard. I can show you."
This lead to a flurry of activity- people grabbing for the Traveler, rushing off to grab things, talking rapidly amongst themselves- it was overwhelming. They could barely make out what everyone was saying in the clamor of things, but before they knew it the Traveler was being lead to the Graveyard, arm gripped by a Devotee. There was more chattering around them, none of which the Traveler could focus on or make out until they reached the Graveyard. One of the Priests started shushing the others, squeezing the Travelers arm and speaking rapidly, asking them to show the way.
They went about adjusting the statues, that must've reset at some point, and heard the others murmur and gasp as the statue of god moved aside, revealing the staircase. The Traveler started down, followed closely by the Priest. It was dark, and while they'd made a torch before, it wound up being unnecessary- someone else handed over a lantern, and the Traveler took it, using the firestarter from the Alchemists to get it lit. Leading them further within- through the small maze of rooms, and....
"The Preacher-" pointing to the fall body, a gentle hand keeping the Priest from getting too close to the edge.
"Thank you, Traveler." the Priest stepped back from the edge, gripping their hand, raising the back of it to their mask.
"Uh... y- your welcome-?" they stammered, feeling oddly uncomfortable. "Do- you need more help...?"
"No- we will retrieve the Preacher. The Preacher will be buried. "Thank you, thank you so much-" pressing the Travelers hand to their mask again, then releasing them. Heading back to fetch the others, gently pulling the Traveler back up the stairs.
The other Devotee's and priests(?) had been busy- there were a number of things the Traveler didn't immediately recognize, and frankly they were feeling fuzzy-headed. All the attention on themself was overwhelming and this had become a much more involved process than anticipated.
Someone grabbed at their elbow and they started, jerking away.
".... ....- .... .... .....?" the Devotee chattered- words the Traveler didn't have, didn't understand.
Or, did they, and they couldn't hear any of it. They shook their head and pulled away, a squeak slipping out. Quickly leaving while the Devotee's hurried about on their task of retrieving the Preachers body.
It was a massive relief- the weight of that knowledge off of their shoulders. The Preacher would be laid to rest- the Devotee's would no longer wonder where the Preacher had gone.
