Work Text:

Here, let me tell you the story of a lonely girl and a magical boy:

Once upon a time, there was a lonely little girl. She was born in faraway mountains but left them for greener pastures just as she reached her teen years.

The town she had found herself in was a good one, surely. But she had nothing to give and so the town gave her nothing in return. They ignored her, looked down on her.

She had no magic of her own, no amazing skills to dazzle the town into helping her simply survive. They all just turned away from the lonely girl on the streets, who had no shelter and no warmth to protect her.

But one day, a boy with magic overflowing and gold-blue eyes reached his hand out to her. It was a homecoming, almost, when he handed over a poorly made soup with a soft, warm smile. It was almost like being taken care of by an older sibling.

The magical boy had long stolen the heart of the town and used this to protect the lonely girl. He’d smile when she did, as if the sun was reaching just over the mountains.

The two spent a lot of time together, considering each other siblings. Those days were the warmest she’d ever felt.

But like summer will always become winter, warmth must become cold eventually. Even if its just a passing breeze, warmth will become replaced by cold.

The magical boy left the town behind to head to higher education in magic. The town celebrated his acceptance and the magical boy promised to come back for the lonely girl.

As he left, the sun slowly climbed back down the mountains. All she had that night was a poorly made bowl of soup. The town went back to ignoring her, as if underneath a curse.

They had only tolerated her because of the magical boy.

She mourned the loss of a good life, because the magical boy was just so far away.

The moon rose behind her, and she looked to the mirror.

Her face reflected back at her, expression blank. Her face was as plain as ever. Only faint scarring around her eye, silvery in faint light, drew any interest.

“Why do they always ignore me?” She asked herself. She stood there for a long time, asking herself that question.

“My face. Its because my face is so plain!” She decided, smile at her lips. The lonely girl wonders what the magical boy would’ve thought in that moment, if he was there.

(Would he have prevented her from doing what she was doing? Would he now?)

She decided to cast away her face. But without a face what could her soul cling to? Her body faded away and her soul became something else.

The soul found a young alchemist. It possessed him and gave him powers beyond your imagination. She used this to bring the town to ruins, because it was their fault for why she gave away her face in the first place.

The magical boy heard of the destruction of the town and rushed to go help. He feared for the town people’s safety.

(The box rattles, again. You start to question it.)

He found the lonely girl possessing the alchemist. She had become something evil, and the magical boy knew what he had to do. He defeated her, watching as her soul de-possessed the poor alchemist.

He saw her soul and with a box, sealed it away. But seals which are hundreds of years old are faulty and easily torn at.

So, did you enjoy my story?

I could give you whatever you want if you let me out. I promise. You can hear me, can’t you?

You won't have to work here anymore!

(The box rattles, the factory pounds against your eardrums)

Open the box, I promise everything will be fine. You won’t even really remember a thing.
