Summary:

Ada finds out she's pregnant.

Notes:

Title comes from an Enya song because IDK I feel like Ada would like her for some reason. Anyway.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter Text

If all you told was turned to gold
If all you dreamed was new
Imagine sky-high above
In Caribbean blue

This is not fucking happening.  It can’t be.

“Fuck,” Ada mutters.

She stands and drops the positive pregnancy test in the trash can.

She wants to see Leon.  And isn’t that what caused all this trouble, even beyond her… current predicament.  But he deserves to know, doesn’t he?  Even if- no, she can’t let herself think about that.

Ada stands in front of Leon’s apartment, trying to work up the courage to knock.  Normally, she would’ve just come in through the window, but this feels… different, somehow.  And it gives her more time to stall because she’s a fucking coward .  That’s all she’s ever been.  Even now, all she wants to do is run.

Then the door opens and Leon appears.

“Um,” he says. “Hi.”

“Hey,” Ada says.

“Something wrong with the window?”

“No, just didn’t feel like using it.” Ada smiles weakly.

“Okay.” Leon shrugs.

“I need to talk to you,” Ada tells him.

“That doesn’t sound good,” Leon says. “Mind waiting a few minutes?  I need to walk the dogs.”

“Mind if I come with you?” Ada asks.

Leon’s surprised, but he tries to hide it. “Uh, yeah.  If you want.  Er, I mean-”

Ada can’t help but laugh. “Leon.”

“Right.  Sorry.” Leon smiles awkwardly. “Uh, I guess we should go then.”

Ada nods.  Leon steps into the hallway and locks the door behind him.

They’re both silent the entire walk down to the street.

“If you’re breaking up with me, I want my clothes back,” Leon says.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Ada says flatly.

“Oh yeah?” Leon asks, amused. “Sure that’s not my sweatshirt you’re wearing?”

“Yup,” Ada says, even though it is and he knows it. “Anyway, that’s not- what this is about.”

“That’s a relief.” Leon laughs softly. “So, what is it about?”

Ada shakes her head. “Not here.  It’s not safe.”

“Of course,” Leon sighs. “Nothing in our lives can ever be fucking normal.”

“Normalcy is overrated, anyway.” Ada shrugs.

Leon snorts. “Sure.”

Ada’s hit with another urge to run.  Instead, she wraps her hand around Leon’s wrist.  He turns to her, surprised.

“Don’t,” she hisses.

To his credit, he stays silent.  They don’t typically show affection in public, but there’s not many people around and Ada needs it.  She can feel his pulse and it grounds her because they’re here and they’re alive and it’s good .

Leon’s smiling at her.

“What?” she asks.

“Nothin’, I just- I missed you.” Leon shrugs.

Ada can’t help smiling back. “Oh yeah?”

Leon nods.

Ada’s missed him terribly too, but she won’t admit it.  And anyway, she’s sure he already knows.

“You, uh, ready to head back?”

Ada’s not sure if the euphemism is intentional or not, but she doubts they’ll be doing much of that.

“Yeah, okay,” she says.

“So, what did you wanna talk about?” Leon asks once they’re safely back in his apartment and he’s let the dogs off their leashes.

“You, uh, might wanna sit down,” Ada says.

“That bad, huh?” Leon laughs.

Ada can’t meet his eyes.  She shifts on her feet and pulls her sweatshirt tighter around herself.

“I’m pregnant,” she says softly. “It’s yours.”

Leon is uncharacteristically silent, and when Ada finally works up the courage to look at him again, he’s just staring at her, eyes wide.

“Wha- I- you-” he sputters. “Are you sure?”

“Considering I haven’t been fucking any other men, yeah, I’m sure,” Ada snaps. “Do you think I’m that much of a whore?”

“No!  No, that’s not- I just, y’know, uh, the- the tests aren’t always accurate.  And they sometimes maybe say you’re- uh- but you’re really not.”

Ada feels the anger drain from her because of fucking course that’s what he meant.  She sits on the couch.

“Not ten times in a row,” she says.

“Oh,” Leon says.

“Oh?” Ada echoes.

“I’m not sure how you want me to respond, Ada,” Leon says, sitting next to her on the couch.

“Honestly?  Neither am I.” Ada tries to laugh, but it sounds forced, even to her.

“What’re we gonna do?” Leon asks softly.

“I’m not sure yet,” Ada confesses. “I, um- I on’y just found out.”

“And you came right here?  Wow, Ada, you must be getting soft.”

“I will hit you,” Ada threatens him, though without any real venom.

Leon shrugs, a goofy grin on his face.  Ada sighs.

“You’re insufferable ,” she tells him.

“You love me.”

Ada scoffs.

“Seriously though, thanks for telling me.  It, uh- it means a lot.”

“Uh, yeah.  Right.”

Leon takes her hand. “Stay.  Please.”

Ada cups his cheek. “I was planning on it.”

Ada Wong does not cry- at least as far as anyone else knows.  She’s never even let Leon see her cry, not even when news of Mama’s death had sent her running straight to him.

It’s not until Leon’s asleep that she lets out the tears that have been threatening to fall ever since the first positive test.  At least, she thought he’d been asleep, until he slings an arm around her waist.  Fucking asshole.

“‘S gonna be okay,” he mumbles.

“Don’t,” Ada says weakly, wiping her eyes.

He stays silent while she cries, occasionally pressing kisses against her neck and shoulder.

“I’m sorry,” he murmurs.

“For what?” Ada asks, sniffing. “It’s not your fault.”

“I mean, it kinda is.”

“La La.” Ada rolls over to face him. “You’re being ridiculous.”

Leon pouts and opens his mouth like he wants to say something, but thinks better of it and closes it again.  Ada can’t help but kiss him.  It’s soft and chaste, though there’s a part of Ada that wants him to fuck her until she can’t even remember her name, much less worry about the- current situation.  One of the dogs- the big white one that Ada’s pretty sure is actually a wolf, though Leon always insists it’s a dog- is curled up at the foot of the bed, and it tends to start crying if it gets kicked out of bed.

A part of Ada hates that she knows that.

“Hey, uh, if there’s anything I can do, let me know, okay,” Leon says. “I mean, I’m not a, uh, a magic man, so no promises.  But I’ll do my best.”

“Did you forget the word ‘wizard’ again?” Ada asks him.

Leon pouts again. “Are you ever gonna get tired of teasing me?”

“Nope.” Ada laughs.

Leon shakes his head.

“When I’m trying to be sincere,” he mutters, but he’s fighting back a smile.

“La La.  Tell me the truth.” Ada takes his hand and places it on her belly. “Do you want this- this baby?”

Leon frowns. “Ada-”

“Don’t.  I’m asking because it’s your- your baby too and I care what you think.”

“I- can I think about it?” Leon asks in a small voice.

Ada’s pretty sure he doesn’t actually need to think about it, but he’s worried his answer will piss her off.

“Of course,” she says. “Take as much time as you need.  I’ll be here.”

Leon beams at her.

“What?” she asks him.

“You’ll be here.”

Ada sighs and tucks her head under Leon’s chin.  He’s so warm , almost impossibly so.  Over the years, Ada’s found herself craving that warmth more and more.  A part of her worries that one day, she’ll catch fire from him and won’t have the heart to extinguish herself.  The other part of her worries it’s already happened.  For fucks sake, she’d come here instead of-

She’s not sure if she’d make a good mother- if she even has the capacity to care that much about another human.  But Leon would make a great father, she’s almost certain of it.
