In the corner of my room wearing a tracksuit

Summary:

This has to be the grand culmination of all of his hard work and research.

So why is his screen still blank?

Notes:

Firstly: HAPPY BIRTHDAY THEELLIBU <3333

Secondly: title from Mingyu's verse in GAM3 BO1

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

"Why are you lying on my new sofa like a corpse?"

Wonwoo barely lifts his head to turn it towards the voice and mumble out a reply of "ours not yours". He got home from the company half an hour ago, while Mingyu was on the phone (with his mum if the totally-not-baby-voice Wonwoo had heard through the door was anything to go by) in his room, and was struck with the overwhelming urge to see how soft the corduroy would feel on his face, so here he is.

It would be way too much effort than he has energy for right now to explain that to Mingyu, so he just settles for a low grunt and a vague handwave. Mingyu will get it. He usually does, at least.

"My poor tired Wonu-hyung," Mingyu says, feet appearing in Wonwoo's vision next to the sofa. There's a hand in his hair a moment later and Wonwoo doesn't even attempt to hold back his satisfied groan when well-manicured nails dig gently into his scalp. "Do you want some coffee? A can of hideously coloured energy drink?"

"No," Wonwoo says, melting further into the sofa. He just wants this. "This's goo'."

Mingyu hums. The feet he can see become knees and hips as Mingyu squats down, then his face, lips coming closer to press a kiss to Wonwoo's forehead. "The bed would probably be more comfortable."

Wonwoo agrees, but his eyes are closing now, eyelids as heavy as the rest of his body feels. He lets out a deep sigh when Mingyu's fingers rub at the shell of his ear. "Mmmm."

Mingyu is giggling but Wonwoo doesn't care if he's living up to some cat related stereotype. "You'll complain if I let you stay here all night. Come sleep with me."

"It's so early," Wonwoo says, but he doesn't resist when Mingyu pulls him to sit up, then to his feet. "Too sleepy for sex."

Mingyu laughs a bit harder at that, presses another kiss to Wonwoo's cheek this time. "So cute, my Wonu."

Wonwoo leans into Mingyu's broad chest when his arms come around Wonwoo's shoulders. He pats one of Mingyu's pecs with one hand. "Good pillow. So sturdy."

Mingyu's answering snort vibrates against his ear before he's being led through the apartment to Mingyu's room.

It's only once he's settled under Mingyu's pretentiously expensive sheets ("Egyptian Cotton is not pretentious, hyung, it breathes!"), head resting on his favourite pillow, that Wonwoo remembers what he had planned to do this evening.

"Mingyu," he says, pushing himself up, ignoring Mingyu's whine and his hands pawing at Wonwoo's pyjamas. "Shh, listen. I had an idea."

"Oh?" How Mingyu manages to inject so much innuendo into one syllable is a mystery to Wonwoo but this is the horse he's hitched his cart to.

"Not that," Wonwoo retorts with a slap to the side of Mingyu's chest he's not resting his chin on. "An idea of a game I can teach you."

Wonwoo can feel Mingyu physically deflating at the words, torso sinking underneath Wonwoo's before he starts trying to wiggle out from where Wonwoo has him pinned. "Noooo."

"Yesssss," Wonwoo says. He rubs his hand over Mingyu's stomach a few times. "You'll like this one, I promise. It's cute and we can be a team!"

Wonwoo keeps his fingers moving over Mingyu's skin while he waits - a cheap trick, he knows, but he hasn't been Soonyoung's best friend for this many years without picking up a few things about getting your own way.

"Cute means nothing; you think the monster from Stranger Things is cute," Mingyu says. He covers Wonwoo's hand with his own and stops its movement but doesn't lift it away. "You swear it's not scary? No ghosts or rabid dogs or whatever the fuck that thing in that basement was. Hyung, I had nightmares for a week after that one."

Mingyu's fingers close tightly around his now and Wonwoo stretches up to kiss the nearest part of Mingyu's face, lips landing on what feels like a faintly stubbled chin. "I promise there are zero monsters; ghosts, rabid dogs, or otherwise." Wonwoo kisses him again, moving his lips along the familiar path to Mingyu's mouth despite the darkness and his lack of glasses.

Mingyu kisses back the way he always does, this strange combination of lazy and intense that Wonwoo has been addicted to since the first time their lips touched in the hushed quiet of Wonwoo's top bunk.

(Hushed until Mingyu took a shortcut while he tried to make his kiss-drunk way down to his own bunk underneath by falling off the bed with a scream and a loud thud. Wonwoo had hidden under his blankets with his fingers pressed against his mouth, and if it was for reasons beyond just stifling his laughter, then that's a secret Wonwoo will take to the grave.)

"Okay," Mingyu says once his tongue is back in his own mouth. "I eagerly await your lesson, Wonu-ssaem."

*
Wonwoo has few regrets in life. This, however, this might have just rocketed itself into the top 5 on its debut.

"Why is there an onion here?! I need a carrot! Hyung!"

"I fell off, okay? Hang on."

"Hyuuuung! The fish is burning!"

His cat chef avatar pops back into existence as Mingyu's crocodile rushes past with the fire extinguisher, slides on the ice, sets itself on fire, then careens over the edge into the water. Mingyu wails and drops his controller as the game declares "Time's Up!" and with it their fourth failed attempt in a row at this level.

Wonwoo should have just got Mingyu to teach him to make juk in their actual kitchen instead.

*

Okay, so maybe cooking against the clock was more of a giant leap than a small step than Wonwoo had anticipated. That's fine, totally fine! He is undeterred!

He crosses out food games on his list and chews on the end of his pen for a moment as he considers the remaining options.

Badland - I don't have a deathwish

Sports?? stares back at him. Wonwoo grimaces. Would he do that for love or was Meatloaf right?

*

Meatloaf was definitely right.

*

"Trouble in paradise?" Vernon says when Wonwoo meets him in the elevator the next day going up to the practice rooms. "Where's your Sweetie?" He cranes his neck to look into the hallway before the doors slide shut in front of his nose.

Wonwoo sighs. "Sulking because I beat him at FIFA, NHL, NBA, and QWOP," he says, counting off on his fingers. He winces as he says the last one. That one… that one was a mistake.

Vernon blinks at him then whistles. "Awesome," he says, holding his hand out for a low five.

Wonwoo waits.

"Oh! Oh, right, right, right," Vernon says. "Did you try to let him win?"

"I was basically miming using the controller for half an hour and he scored an own goal."

Vernon makes a face and pats Wonwoo's shoulder. "It's okay. He's got other talents."

"That's the thing! It's not like he needs to be good, I just want him to enjoy himself," Wonwoo says. The elevator doors open, revealing a few more members lingering in the narrow corridor.

"Yeah, but hyung-" Vernon stops him before he can get a foot outside the elevator. "- he enjoys himself by being good at things."

Wonwoo pushes him out and jabs at the button to close the doors again.

*

The thing is, Wonwoo thinks as he stares at the blinking cursor of his notes app, Mingyu is very dexterous and capable with his hands. Wonwoo has watched him build furniture, cook countless meals, draw, paint, and, probably most impressive of all, adjust the hellishly fiddly links on most of his and Wonwoo's ever-growing watch collection.

Not to mention the more adult activities that have Wonwoo smirking as a series of memories flash through his mind. Yes. Very capable, indeed, in that respect.

But he's not here to get sidetracked by his libido, he has important decisions to make. This has to be the grand culmination of all of his hard work and research.

So why is his screen still blank?

*

"Mingoo-yah, where's the thing you bought for cleaning my glasses?"

"Third cabinet, second shelf. In the blue box."

*

"Hey, where is the spare camera battery charger?"

"In my room, left side of the desk. It should be plugged in already."

"Thanks, love."

*

"Yeah, Mingyu found it. I'd put a book on top of it… Yeah, panic over… Okay, see you later."

*

Wonwoo finally has his eureka moment a few weeks into his project, while he and Mingyu are eating between recording sessions at the studio. He can't believe it didn't come to him sooner, but genius takes time, he supposes.

"Oh, my god."

"Hm- argh!"

Wonwoo slaps the table between them, making Mingyu jump. "I'm a genius," he says while Mingyu clutches at his chest.

"That's it? You gave me a heart attack for that?"

"You'll see," Wonwoo says. He leans over and plants a loud smacking kiss on Mingyu's forehead. "This is my best idea yet."

*

Ping!

Ping!

Ping!

Mingyu's kakaotalk notification echoes out from the open bathroom door, followed by a loud sigh and wet feet slapping over the floor. Wonwoo burrows down further into the bed covers and hides his smirk as Mingyu, half-naked and half-shaved, comes in and holds out to Wonwoo the ipad he'd asked Mingyu to bring him.

"You could have brought it with you when you came to bed," Wonwoo says. He wiggles one hand free from his cocoon and takes the ipad.

"I figured it was urgent seeing as you sent me a ktalk message while I was shaving." Mingyu rolls his eyes but doesn't appear to be rushing back to finish his bedtime routine. "What do you need it for anyway?"

"I'll show you in a minute," Wonwoo says, tilting the screen away from Mingyu's gaze as he unlocks it. "Go shave the other half of your face."

Mingyu's eyebrows raise but he doesn't press further, just turns on his heel and returns to the bathroom.

Wonwoo pushes himself up and taps through to the game he downloaded earlier. He can't help but smile as it loads, looking at all the cute little cats with their hats and swords. Yes. This is an excellent plan.

He locks the screen again and grabs his phone to take as obscure of a photo as he can, just a thumbs up and the corner of his ipad in the frame, the bed just a blurry background. He uploads it to weverse with a simple "Good night. 👍🏻" while he waits.

"Mingyuuuuu… I thought you were almost done?"

"One minute!"

Wonwoo kills time by cleaning his glasses, grateful for his blurred vision when the tan coloured blob that Wonwoo knows is a still-shirtless Mingyu materialises in the doorway. The lack of grey coloured blob underneath his torso blob let's Wonwoo know that he's either fully naked or just in his underwear.

The left lens of Wonwoo's glasses gets another polish, a little harder than the first.

"Okay," Mingyu says as he throws himself down next to Wonwoo. "What's so urgent? Is it porn? Dangerous to have that on your ipad, Wonu. What if you leave it somewhere?"

"First, I'm not you, I can keep track of my possessions in airports," Wonwoo says. He puts his glasses back on and flicks Mingyu's forehead. "Second, no it's not porn, you insatiable freak."

"You say that, but I wasn't the one who made us late for the car pick up on Monday," Mingyu says. Wonwoo pushes him until he gets off the bed, then lifts the covers and pats the mattress.

"Good boy," he says when Mingyu slides in, crowding into Wonwoo's space immediately. They shuffle around a bit until Wonwoo can sink back into the warmth of Mingyu's body, his arms around Wonwoo's shoulders.

"I think I finally found the perfect game we can play together," Wonwoo says while unlocking the screen. "And the best part is we can stay in bed for it."

"I could say something but I don't want to reinforce the 'insatiable freak' accusations," Mingyu murmurs, close enough to Wonwoo's ear that his lips brush against the shell of it. "Ow! Stop with your pointy elbows!"

"Shh, pay attention," Wonwoo says after a swift jab to Mingyu's stomach. "These cats are knights, and we need to help them solve a kidnapping."

"Oh, my god, they're wearing little suits of armour."

Wonwoo nods. He taps through the menu screen and snuggles back into Mingyu a bit more as the opening cut-scene plays, introducing the story. The animation is cute and Mingyu’s soft giggles vibrate against his back. Wonwoo gives himself a hearty mental pat on the back.

“Tap on the sparkles, hyung," Mingyu says, but Wonwoo just brings the ipad closer so Mingyu can do it himself. "What's this? What do we do?"

"I think we just find the things in the list at the bottom in the picture," Wonwoo says, eyes scanning across, looking for the first object. "Then we get something to help us in the main game maybe?"

"Ooh, okay," Mingyu says. "Oh, I got one… There… Oh, cool, it crosses it off for us. Okay, next one…"

Wonwoo can't keep back the grin he feels forming on his face as he listens to Mingyu's running commentary while he searches for the hidden objects.

Truly, Jeon Wonwoo, you are a genius.

*

Wonwoo isn't surprised when it only takes them a couple of hours to get through the game, and he can admit to a smug satisfaction when Mingyu whines at the end credits rolling.

"Aww, it's over already? I thought we were going to have more adventures," Mingyu says, pouting when Wonwoo turns his head to look at him. "We just got promoted! They gave us a little kitty medal!"

Wonwoo turns fully to face Mingyu, letting the ipad fall onto the covers behind him. "Mm-hmm. You know what this means."

"We're the catstown chief of guard," Mingyu says back without even blinking, making Wonwoo snort out a laugh.

"No, babo," he says. "It means that my long hours of work and research are finally done. I have climbed my Mount Everest! Conquered my nemesis! Beaten the final boss level!"

Mingyu stares at him. "Did you hit your head while I wasn't looking?"

"Oh, for - I mean we have a game we can play together!"

"But we finished it. How much replay value does a game about - admittedly very cute - cats in armour have?"

Wonwoo grabs Mingyu's face with a hand on each cheek, squishing them until his mouth forms a little beak. "Mingoo."

"Wonu?" It comes out sounding even cuter due to the beak situation but Wonwoo will not be swayed. (This time.)

"There are hundreds, probably thousands of these types of games." He watches Mingyu's eyes widen and then crinkle as he tries to smile, cheeks fighting against Wonwoo's grip. "They don't all have cats though. Maybe there will be a sequel… I should check."

He lets Mingyu's face go and picks up the ipad again, ready to search the app store.

"Oh, and a lot of them are only in English, so it'll be good practice? Maybe. We can show Hansollie and ask if there's any useful vocabulary we can pick up from playing," Wonwoo says. He doesn't look up from the screen, making a mental note of the ones he wants to go back to - maybe he should grab his phone and start a new list - oh, yes, good idea. "This one says it's a horror game, but you can handle it like this, right? Mingyu?"

Wonwoo lifts his head when Mingyu doesn't answer, raising an eyebrow at the look on his face. "What?"

"This was really your plan all along?" Mingyu says. Oh, his voice is doing that thing that makes Wonwoo want to curl up like a cat in sunshine. "Finding my game?"

Purr purr purr

"Ours, not yours."

Notes:

All the games mentioned in the fic are real, and I have had varying degrees of success in playing them, lol.
