Work Text:
If you had told Donatello a month ago that he was going to have a dimensional counterpart working alongside him in his lab, he probably would have reacted with a “So soon?”.
When their smaller counterparts appeared after the conveniently placed portal on their city, he was barely able to come with a list of the most important questions about interdimensional travel he had wanted to ask. Unfortunately he had to make do with a measly 200 question survey.
Now that he high of knowing alternate dimensions existed had passed off (and Leo paid him the 20 dollars he owed him) he had tried to bond with his dimensional cousin–how Mikey had started to call them.
It was nice to have a partner for parallel play, Donnie was busy with his own projects while mini Donnie did his chemistry homework,–something Donnie had offered to help with but his little cousin answered with a simple Nah.
"Othello," mini Donnie called his accorded nickname.
"What?"
The other turtle straightened in his place and took his headphones off. "You see, I may have started a little research on my own."
That caught his attention. Lifting his goggles he turned around to face the other.
Since he had met the younger turtle he had been scandalized for his lack of interest in science, and had tried to get him more involved in scientific research. Donnie was glad to know his efforts were not fruitless.
"And may I be allowed to know about this research? As a fellow genius I could give some pointers."
"Actually, I do need your help with this."
Of course he did. He thought.
"Ask away."
"So," Little Donnie started, taking out a notebook and pen "How does it feel to be an anime protagonist."
Say what?
"I'm sorry, an anime what?"
"Anime protagonist," he said and even had the gall to look annoyed to repeat himself.
"You do realize that's fiction."
"And you realize you and your family seem to check most of the boxes?"
"We do n–"
"You are a color coded crime fighting team of teens whose names also have a theme going on." He read out loud.
"And you realize that also applies to you–"
Little Donnie held a green finger in the air to show that he wasn't done yet.
"And, you also have magic."
"It's called mystics."
"Yes, an ancient mystic art passed through family, yadda yadda. And you had to unlock it to fight the prophecy of a sealed evil trying to destroy the world."
"That–"
"That ancient evil was also your many times great grandpa." Donnie said scribbling in his notebook. "Evil relative, a classic."
Othello frowned, yes his life may SLIGHT resemble an anime but he doesn't know how to feel about his killer demon grandpa being referred to as "A classic".
"Although, you guys could also fit in the Magical Girl box."
"Now that is taking it too far." He scoffed. Little Donnie just smiled and pushed his glasses in place with a smug look.
"So, for my understanding your magic is powered by familial love. Right?"
Othello felt his cheeks warm up. "It's mystics," he corrected again. "Ninpo, to be exact. And it works connecting to a pool of mystic energy through close bonds–"
"All right, it is the power of love." Little Donnie interrupted and Othello could feel his eye twitch in irritation because he didn't really have a counterargument.
"Did you perhaps experience an outfit change after unlocking this new power?"
Othello felt cold sweat drip down his face. "Eh, No, he said with confidence and veracity."
"Really?" Donnie asked with the smile of a man who had all the cards in his favor. "Because your Mikey told me you got your black gear after you got your Ninpo."
He got him.
Othello also recalled the way bright eight-bit fire surrounding his body in purple light. But that's something little Donnie didn't need to know.
"Hum, a color coded magical team powered by love and with an outfit change trying to stop an ancient evil. The only thing we are lacking is… an ultimate group attack."
Donatello Hamato couldn't take it anymore.
He stood up silently and got out of the lab, walking straight to the room of his dear twin and new leader.
He announced his arrival with a kick to the door.
"Nardo! Since when are we magical girls?"
Leo didn't even bother to look up from his comic.
"Since forever. Why?"
