Work Text:

“We need a vacation,” Ben says, flopping down on the couch in their apartment. Summer glances over at him, raising an eyebrow.

It’s not that she disagrees. Minus holidays, neither of them had really taken a break since the Societea. They’ve definitely earned at least one vacation for their work over the years. It’s just the topic of vacations had not really come up... ever.

“All right,” she says, “what were you thinking?” Ben grins at her wickedly, and Summer knows he has a plan. It’s one of the many things she likes about him.

“Well, there’s this yearly festival in Paldea. It’s basically a giant food fight with tomatoes.”

She doesn’t even need to think twice about the offer.

“I’m in.”

Before the festival had started, Summer knew that neither of them would be clean. She just didn’t expect just how messy it was going to get.

“I think someone got tomatoes down my shirt,” Ben says.

“That could be just tomatoes sliding down from your head or chest, you know.” She retorts.

“Yeah yeah,” he says with a wave, accidentally flinging a piece of tomato in her direction. Summer dodges it with ease, then looks over at him. He looks far more relaxed than he had in weeks (maybe even months, she realizes with a shock), and she smiles.

“We’re totally coming back next year,” she says. She reaches for his hand and holds it tight, despite the weird feeling of tomatoes between their fingers. “And we’re going to absolutely crush everyone.”

“We should bring Rand, Nema, and Leanne too. They’ll probably enjoy the chance to take a break and let loose.”

He doesn’t react to Summer holding his hand, and she stifles a sigh. She knows she needs to be more direct, but...

“Nema might try to bring in a Z.Z. Flyer so she can have a strategic advantage.” She says instead.

For now, she’s okay with holding Ben’s hand.
